RE: mac partition questiohn

2018-01-13 Thread Simon Fogarty
If you go in to computer and find your harddrive or possibly Macintosh hd,
And do a get info, command key I gives you get info,
Then work your way through and find the size and storage useage of your drive.

Unless you have a lot of stuff being stored on your drive then something sounds
wrong.

RE: mac partition questiohn

2018-01-13 Thread Simon Fogarty
Is this an SSD or a spindal harddrive?

If your computer using the Get Info option gives yo a total drive size of
124gb then then to me that would say your drive is a 128GB ssd

But if you open your disk utilities and find the internal drive you should be
able to see what if any partitions are created on the drive

Re: Configuring audio in BootCamp Windows 10

2018-01-13 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Thanks, Simon. And thanks also to Gena for suggesting USB headphones.
Had I gone to those sooner, it would have still been a fully accessible
install process, even with the breakage in BootCamp driver installation.

There are other gotchyas I ran into that are probably worth documenting.
Some of these that come immediately to mind:

1.) Put your USB stick on a USB2 port. According to an Apple page
about BootCamp, which I won't stop to find just now, USB3 isn't
supported for BootCamp.

2.) Make sure Disk Utility is happy with your USB stick. Should you
have accidentally removed it somewhere without unmounting it first,
BootCamp will complain, but it won't complain for about 20 minutes.
Sloppy scripting, there, Apple!

3.) Make sure your Apple drive's Mac partitions take up the entire
drive. BootCamp won't be happy if you've repartitioned in various ways,
and it won't tell you for a good hour into the process.

4.) You need to babysit the BootCamp process. While it may seem oK
to go away and get something unrelated accomplished while you waith for
the slow BootCamp process to run, that isn't safe. Eventually, BootCamp
will prompt for your password and that starts a clock. If you don't
respond in what it considers a reasonable amount of time, the entire
process may blow up, and you'll have to start over again from scratch. I
got a "BootCamp Busy" message which I couldn't get out of except by
rebooting or by killing the PID from an ssh session into the Mac.

5.) Don't despair of the Windows side of the installation aborts.
This happened to me many times, some dozen times, before it finally
worked. Windows would be "Preparing files for installation" and reading
out a percentage. Then, suddenly, it would abort where the only option
is to hit OK and reboot the machine. Very, Very frustrating, but there's
quite a bit of discussion on line where people have had the same
experience. Eventually, it will work, provided your Mac is on the
supported list that Apple publishes.

Re: Daisy publishing tools

2018-01-13 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Just a few updates ...

DAISY and Epub have indeed merged--past tense. It's a done deal.

Furthermore, the IDPF, which had been creating Epub, has merged into the
W3C. The hope is to have HTML fully support publishing requirements.

Re: mac partition questiohn

2018-01-13 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
You need to learn to use diskutil from the command line. This is best
accomplished by ssh into the Mac from another machine, because you're
more likely to get good screen reader support that way. Voice Over isn't
the best when run in Terminal, which is the native way to do this.

Note that diskutil is not the same as the application called Disk
Utility in the Utilities folder.

I believe I previously sent you a pointer about this?

Re: mac partition questiohn

2018-01-13 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
What you're missing is the way Apple does the math.

Your available storage space is being dynamically allocated between what
is actually used and what's still available for use by Mac or some other
installation, like BootCamp. At least, that's what apfs is doing.

Re: VMware Fusion 10.1.1 and BootCamp

2018-01-13 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Hi, Anders:

Yeah, I'm starting to be tired of handing VMware a few hundred $$ every
few years.

I'm seriously thinking of switching to VirtualBox. I expect a steeper
learning curve, but more consistent maintanance.

Re: Configuring audio in BootCamp Windows 10

2018-01-13 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello Simon and Janina,

Well, I thought I had. For some reason every now and again upon boot the mute
is applied. I shall reinstall bootcamp drivers again. Hopefully, it will settle
down.

But likewise I thank you both for your input. I was going to give up having
installed Windows 10 3 times. Let’s hope it’s third time lucky. Now I know what
the problem is I’m not going to wipe it out and start again. As I’m confident
that it is not something I did wrong, or corrupted file downloads.

It’s interesting that we think of Apple products being the same but issues like
this show that from a software driver point of view Apple has variations from
year to year.

Best regards,

Gena

Later, I got the entire payload of drivers in that directory. However,
at the time I discovered this directory was missing, creating an empty
one proved sufficient to run the installation and, in my case, get audio
working natively from the builtin speakers.

Gena, are you saying that even with a folder load of drivers and a
successful BootCamp install, you're still not getting audio?

Re: mac partition questiohn

2018-01-13 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

To clarify. What's likely happened here is that when you attempted to create
the BootCamp partition, something went wrong. Obvious, I know, but it needs to
be said first. So, you now have the Macintosh HD partition using up half the
space of the 250 GB drive and the rest is unallocated space. As Janina
mentioned, distil in Terminal is your best option. Since you have a MacBook
and you're running High Sierra, the drive will be formatted as APFS which makes
the distil command set slightly different than if it was a spinner drive.
"What you'll want to do is first determine a few facts about the drive and it's
allocations, then you should be able to expand the Macintosh HD to use up the
remaining free space and, thus, regain all the space that the 250 GB drive has
to offer.

Actually, the first thing to do is to make sure that you have a backup of your
data incase of problems. There's not likely to be any, but as soon as I say
that, there probably will be. The commands that you need to consider are:

• distil list (this will list all the volumes on your drive and outline their
format/size etc)
• distil apfs (this will list the available commands under the apfs volume set)
• distil apfs resizeVolume (is likely the command you'll need to regain the
free space)

Note, arguments like resizeVolume are case sensitive. Also, be sure to do the
backup first as you don't want to lose you stuff. Usually, the system won't
let you destroy things without either warning you or just not allowing you to
perform the action, but you never know. You also may need to perform some of
these actions from the Recovery Partition, but, I believe that you really
should be able to non-destructively resize the Macintosh HD volume without too
much headache from within Terminal.

Later...

Hi ET,

I'm not aware of one, but that isn't saying much. I don't use them much

If in fact the drive in the old 2009 Mac is an SSD. If spinning, its
macOS Extended.

Hi,

To clarify. What's likely happened here is that when you attempted to create the
BootCamp partition, something went wrong. Obvious, I know, but it needs to be said
first. So, you now have the Macintosh HD partition using up half the space of the
250 GB drive and the rest is unallocated space. As Janina mentioned, distil in
Terminal is your best option. Since you have a MacBook and you're running High
Sierra, the drive will be formatted as APFS which makes the distil command set
slightly different than if it was a spinner drive. "What you'll want to do is
first determine a few facts about the drive and it's allocations, then you should be
able to expand the Macintosh HD to use up the remaining free space and, thus, regain
all the space that the 250 GB drive has to offer.

My iPhone 5S is running IOS 11.2.2 and like to move an icon. Is the procedure
the same? Double tap the icon to be moved and hold? Thank you.

dimmed opption in Cellular

2018-01-13 Thread Angus MacKinnon
My iPhone 5S is running IOS 11.2.2. I go to Settings + Cellular and toggle
Cellular Data On and Apps is dimmed Off. Since Apps is dimmed, I can not toggle
Apps On. Why is Apps dimmed even when Cellular Data is toggled On? I am with
Rogers in Canada.

Re: Dictation and accessability

2018-01-13 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Look at the dictation area of the Keyboard system preferences. I generally
prefer using the hit Fn button twice to associating with a keyword. I have
found otherwise sometimes Voiceover causes dictation to start.

All the commands listed in the Accessibility area should still be available.

Re: moving icons in IOS 11

2018-01-13 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Slightly different now is that you can use the activity rotor and select drag
and drop as options there.

So a little less random than in earlier versions.

If you want to lace a specific app in the third column forth row and there is
no app there, you still need to go back to the double tab and hold in order to
drag the icon.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

RE: Mail composing issue

2018-01-13 Thread Gabe Griffith
Hi,

The problem I have is when I want to edit something in an email I can't get the
cursor to the spot I want to edit and it is editing in a different part of the
email. Compounding this issue is that my cursor often jumps around and I find
myself typing somewhere other than where I meant to be.

2018-01-13 Thread Christine Grassman
Yes, this is what I was referring to when I said you had to get to the line,
and sometimes the word, you want to edit by interacting specifically on that
line. It usually works if you use the up and down arrows to get to the line you
want, then the left and right arrows to get to the word, then interact. Not
always. This has got to be one of the most aggravating aspects of my MacBook
right now, other than the frequent “busy” messages and the sudden freezing then
returning of VoiceOver at random times. I also have been experiencing a bunch
of rapid clicks, often accompanied by VO not working, while reading a page in a
browser.

Hi!
I think you have to resize or re-partition the mac and start over.
That’s the easiest solution.

Hi!
Some of the virtualbox gui interface is accessible but i wouldn’t use that if i
were you.
THere are commands for virtualbox from terminal so i guess you just ssh into
your mac and do the configuring and then use it from the mac itself when all is
setup.

One of these options was to use a bootcamp partition.

When did this email thing start, and is it for a specific view?

I'm using a Mac to type this, in standard view, and I'm not seeing any of these

 Hi listers,

When composing emails I have a strange problem when trying to edit a
 message.

When I go back into a message to change something I can’t hear the
change. It is like nothing happened. Then when I turn off voice over and
turn it on again, my changes can be heard. This makes using mail very
 difficult on my mac.

Anyone else having this problem? Any tips on what I can do to fix it?

 Thanks.

Hi Alex and others,

In addition to the responses here I received at least one off list from
a very experienced mac user. I’m glad I’m not alone. this happened on my
upgrade to high Sierra.
For the past two years I was working on a conference for guide dog
users. If this bug had been happening I would not have been able to complete
that important task. this is a huge productivity hit. I thought it was just
me but as it is clearly effecting others I dearly hope Apple is working on a
fix.

At this time I try really hard not to make errors in my emails!

 Thanks.

18 Brutally Honest Confessions From A Former Apple Store Employee. We see a
lot of nudes.
By Stephen LaConteJanuary 13, 2018, at 1:16 p.m.

1.
Sometimes we honestly have no idea WTF is wrong with your device.

2.
We see a lot of pictures you might not want us to see. We would never snoop
through a person's device, ever. But sometimes people don't realize what
they've left open on their screen when they hand it to us.

3.
We know when you're lying, even if we don't say it. You can tell us you
didn't drop your phone in water, but the liquid indicators inside your phone
beg to differ.

4.
If you're looking for special favors, manners go a long way. Lots of people
think they can scream their way into getting a free thing. It rarely works.

5.
But most of the time, we have to play by the rules no matter what. Even the
nicest folks. Sorry.

6.
Employees aren't there to upsell you on something you don't need. Our job is
to match you to the device that's right for you, even if it's the cheapest
model.

7.
And, tbh, we don't actually care if you buy anything. Most employees don't
work on commission, anyway!

8.
We don't actually give a shit when you mess with the display devices. Go
wild!

9.
...Because all those screens automatically reset themselves overnight,
anyway. Yeah, there's no way we'd be able to catch all those pranks
ourselves.

10.
We know that some people just come in to check their email or Facebook, and
we don't mind! We've got hundreds of devices lying around - go ahead and use
them!

11.
Yes, we've heard the "Are you really a GENIUS???" joke a thousand times
before. But we'll keep fake-laughing every time someone makes it.

12.
The store can get really busy - even when it looks totally empty. At any
given moment, there could be dozens of people waiting on a Genius Bar
appointment. They're not necessarily in the store!

13.
We really don't know any of the juicy corporate secrets. We aren't lying
when we say we don't know when the new Macbooks will come out or what the
new iPhone will look like. They don't tell us that stuff.

14.
No, we can't let you use our employee discount. Has any store in the history
of retail allowed this???

15.
Product launch days can be really freaking stressful. Long lines, sold-out
products, loud crowds, impatient customers...it's a lot to handle.

16.
But Apple makes the shifts a little more bearable with a lot of free food
for employees. Free pizza in the break room makes everything better.

17.
There are a LOT of meltdowns at the Genius Bar. We don't like to be the
bearer of bad news, but sometimes that's our job.

18.
But there are a lot of beautiful moments, too. Helping a grandmother learn
how to FaceTime her grandkids, helping a new mom recover deleted pictures of
her baby...that's the stuff that makes the job worthwhile.

Re: Dictation and accessability

2018-01-13 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Jonathan,

the press FN key twice is working for text dictation for me. It
doesn’t work for the commands I was using with the computer keywords like
“select all” or go to beginning.

I keep thinking it must be something I have done to mess this up as it
used to work nicely. Now it acts like it isn’t on. yet I think I’ve turned
everything on.

thanks for the suggestion it will keep me searching.

Re: Dictation and accessability

2018-01-13 Thread Eric Caron
OK,

I got it working again.

I went to accessibility and dictation. I first went to the commands
table and unchecked and rechecked each item and . that seemed to give me back
most functions. I tried to check the advanced button in this area but it
didn’t seemed to stay checked. finally using the space bar seemed to check it
and I hit done and now things seemed to work as before.

I’m enjoying being able to say, computer, “ go to beginning” or “select all.”
And it just works.

Now I’m off to see if I can follow some directions I found to set up a way to
get Siri to work from a voice command on my Mac, similar to Hey Siri on my
phone.

has anyone out there accomplished that yet?

Re: Mail composing issue

2018-01-13 Thread Gabe Griffith
Hi,

I don't remember now if it was the update to Sierra or High Sierra when this
started for me. I sort of feel dumb for having to ask this but how do you tell
exactly which view you're using?

Thanks,

Gabe

I have found that if you wait about ten seconds, the changes show without
having to shut off VO. I have also found that is often extremely difficult
to edit without interacting with the text exactly where you want to make
the edits. Additionally, I have resorted much of the time to the text edit
method, or dictation. Iwill sometimes make edits on my iPhone by going
into the Drafts folder. All in all, a real pain.

Please note there is a grammatical error in the above statement but, with
this bug, I cannot correct it. The only way aroung this is to type
something in text edit and then copy and paste it into your email.
