Thought to ask this here since I know the Mac Mini is a favourite amongst

If the mini is connected to a screen via HDMI, do you still have the option to
send out the audio via the 3.5mm headphone jack, or does it force the audio to
go down the HDMI?

I’m thinking of getting a Mini as a media server, but will need the audio to go
out via the headphone port or actually digitally via a optical adaptor, while
also connected to a TV via the HDMI.

Hello Everyone,

In an age of political correctness, it's gotten so that I'm almost afraid to
wish anyone a Merry Christmas so I'll just say that I hope you all had a
pleasant December 25th and are enjoying your holiday season.

As for me, I had a very pleasant Christmas, this year.

I want you all to know that I found myself thinking about you, today. Many,
many of your names came to mind as I was enjoying my Christmas dinner;
wondering how your day was going, hoping you were happy, etc.

If it were possible, I would have given all of you a Christmas hug and told you
how greatful I am that you and I are in this world at the same time.

Being visually impaired is never easy even when some days go by more easily
than others.

Be that as it may, I want you to know that it helps me a great deal to know
that I do not struggle with my visual challenges alone; that somewhere out
there, you are with me in spirit.

As I have said on many occasions, we, you and I are brothers and sisters on
this path of accessability exploration and expansion and for that, I am truly
grateful.

Okay, I'll step down off of my proverbial soapbox and return you to your
regularly scheduled email posting (smile).

Your Brother on the Path,

Mark

Hello Karen,

To the contrary, Windows users do, in fact, have Apple IDs.

Windows users simply install iTunes for Windows if they want iTunes for desktop
functionality.

Some Windows screen readers work better with iTunes for Windows, than others
but, iTunes for Windows is definitely screen reader accessible.

For the record, I think most Windows users agree that the NVDA, Non-visual
Desktop Access screen reader works best with iTunes for Windows.

Personally, I use Zoomtext and on occasion, Jaws, with iTunes for Windows with
great success.

Subject: Re: To Janina Sajka Soft phones?

Hi, Donna:

My apologies for the slow response. I've been distracted by noncomputer
responsibilities these past few weeks.

To answer your question I'd need to know a bit more what your needs are. Let
me explain:

Probably the most widely known soft phone is Skype. Howegver, I myself don't
use Skype. Depending on your platform, you might find Skype accessible--or not.
For instance it's not accessible on Linux today.

On Apple products we have Face Time. I've used it slightly, and my experience
suggest it's accessibility is excellent.

There are other soft phone clients that people use for voice communications
such as Face Book's Whatsapp, or Cisco's GoToMeeting or their Webex product.
Accessibility of these varies from very accessible, e.g. Webex on Android, to
not very accessible for anyone even when you're not using assistive technology,
e.g. Webex on Mac.

Now, my situation is somewhat different. I have the particular requirement for
an old fashioned phone number. I need the ability to recieve calls from any
phone anywhere, and to call any traditional telephone number anywhere. I do
this in two ways using the SIP protocol and a gateway service that routes calls
between my SIP devices and the standard telephony world, usually abrieviated
PSTN, which stands for "Public Switched Telephone Network."

1.) I have hard ware devices that look all the world like old
fashioned telephones, but they're different. They're hardware SIP phones, and
they connect over computer type network cables--what we call
Cat5 (or Cat6) ethernet cables.

My current device of choice is the Snom D715, primarily because
it's able to use IPv6, where Polycom phones do not. I have not
investigated use of the SIP handsets from Digium--though they're
on my list to look at the next time I'm in the market for a
hardware phone.

2.) I use linphone, and sometimes the fs_cli application
provided by FreeSwitch on my Linux computers for placing and
recieving SIP calls. This functionality is critical to my work
because it allows me to use a high quality headset that connects
to my computer using USB, and still allows me to route the audio
through a 12 channel audio hardware mixer on my desk. This way
I'm able to have my screen reader as well as my telephone
conversation in my ears, without the people I'm talking with
hearing my screen reader.

Of course SIP phones can be used to place direct calls to other SIP phones,
just like Skype and FaceTime calls can be made to others who are also using
Skype or FaceTime. I believe Skype also provides the ability to call to and
from the PSTN, but I don't know anything specific about that, or about any
similar functionality among the other soft phones mentioned.

The biggest problem with all these services is that they don't interoperate
natively, e.g. Webex can't call FaceTime, or vice versa.
The standards world is hoping to solve this with specifications called WebRTC.
Time will tell how that goes.

Hope this helps!

Janina

Recommendation for WiFI extender

2017-12-27 Thread Adrienne Chalmers

Hi

I had terrible trouble with my home network until I got a couple of Google
Wifi points. I had tried all sorts of different extenders, but the mesh type
really does the job.

>From what I recall, it was relatively easy to set up, the most difficult bit
>was finding the bar code on the bottom of the units. The app is quite clear in
>its explanations of how to set up and so forth.

The app will also give you reports on-the status of your network, internet
connection and which devices are on and off line. I think there is a 24 hour
support line, but I’ve never used it.

Regards

Adrienne

Apple Watch and Touch Typing

2017-12-27 Thread Jeff Berwick
Hi all,

I received an Apple Watch for Christmas and have gone through the setup
process. It is the Series 3 with cellular.

I have enabled the passcode feature for after I remove the watch, but wonder if
there is a way to change the typing to touch typing.

I have searched the settings on the Watch and iPhone and the internet, but
haven’t found anything.

Is the Apple Watch capable of touch typing, or do I have to select a
digit/letter and then double tap?

Thx,
Jeff

Re: To Janina Sajka Soft phones?

2017-12-27 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I sent a few e-mails to the Cisco accessibility desk and just essentially
gave up.

My Cisco IP phone on my desk has a button that allows me to speak a name
and it will dial it. I have memorized the voice mail button and luckily my
office did not enable the roaming feature that requires one to login to the
phone every morning in order to receive calls.

There is a cisco branded IP communicator for Windows that I can get to
answer and make calls with but I have to remember that F2 is to pick up or
hang up a call. I think Cisco also mentioned jabber clients would work,
but I did not pursue.

I should still have the conversation lurking in my Exchange mailbox
somewhere if you want some start up points.

I believe the accessibility desk for Cisco might be maintained out of NZ or
AU so at least you wouldn't have a time differential when communicating
with them.
In fact when I worked on a daily basis with Cisco support, I usually found
the Australian office better than the UK or US offices for resolving
issues. though that was a dozen years ago.

Contact me off list if you want to find a solution together.

Best Wishes,

Jonathan

Sell your stuff with these apps that replace garage sales, USA Today

2017-12-27 Thread M. Taylor
Sell your stuff with these apps that replace garage sales
By Jennifer Jolly, Special for USA Today, Updated 5:59 a.m. PDT June 19,
2017

The sweltering heat is here and the icy lemonade is flowing - yep, it's
definitely summer. If you wrapped up your spring cleaning with a room full
of random stuff you don't need anymore - but is just too good to throw out!
- a garage sale might be next up on your list of to-do's.
But c'mon, it's summer and you have better things to do than sit outside all
day with cardboard signs haggling over a few pennies for your old stuff.
Here's how to have a virtual garage sale via simple smartphone apps.

VarageSale
VarageSale (iOS/Android) makes the process of getting your items in front of
local buyers super easy. You use the free app - or the VarageSale website -
to create a brief listing for each thing you're trying to get rid of. A
quick pic, short description, and your asking price is all you need, so you
can go on a serious listing spree in just a few minutes. It's fantastic for
listing a bunch of items one after another, so if you've got a whole garage
full of goodies to unload, this is your best bet. What's really great about
VarageSale is you (and everyone else) can log in using Facebook, which means
everyone has a real name and a face to go along with it, so no creepy
contacts will flood your inbox.

OfferUp, Shpock
If you're really in a hurry, and just need to ditch a handful of things,
there are apps for that, too. OfferUp (iOS/Android) posts listings in as
little as 30 seconds, and has a image-heavy browsing style that lets your
eye-catching photos do the selling for you, along with private messaging and
reputation ratings to weed out scammers and spammers.
Shpock (iOS/Android) works in the same way, but bills itself as being for
"beautiful" items, so if you're selling something that you think deserves
some seriously special consideration - like a fancy antique bike or pricey
electronics - it's a solid bet someone on Shpock will be interested.

Facebook, Nextdoor
These apps are great go-tos for moving used items in a hurry, but if you
absolutely don't want to mess around with any new apps whatsoever, you're
still in luck! Facebook is packed with pages full of local people buying and
selling. Head to Facebook, either on your phone app or web browser, and in
the search box at the top of the page, just type the name of your city or
county along with the words "buy and sell." In my experience, even the
smallest towns have a rummage page on Facebook, so the top listing in the
search results is going to be your go-to.
Nextdoor is a similarly simple way to show your neighborhood what you're
selling.
Of course, there's always the chance that your tiny township has missed out
on the Facebook train. That's okay! In that case, Craigslist is the old
standby that still produces results, even if the site looks like it is from
1999. Create a quick listing, toss in a photo, and insist on email contacts
only - because giving your phone number on a public forum isn't a great idea
- and wait for a bite.

No matter which app, site, or virtual marketplace you end up using, the
rules for exchanging your stuff for cash are always the same: Always insist
on meeting in a public place, for safety, and never take checks. Seasoned
local sellers will tell you that the parking lot of your local police
station is a great place to make a sale, and nobody in their right mind is
going to try to scam you (or worse) with Johnny Law looking over their
shoulder. And if you don't feel like messing with paper money, an app like
Square Cash (iOS/Android) can take payments directly, with an added layer of
security and peace of mind.

I know selling things online might not be for everyone - like if you just
have too much stuff to list, or a garage full of trinkets that need to be
seen to be appreciated - but if you're going with an old fashioned
pack-the-driveway rummage spree, your smartphone can make that easier, too.

Yard Sale Treasure Map (iOS/Android) is a community-based garage sale
listing app that puts your local newspaper classified section to shame. You
can create a notice for your sale in just a minute or two, complete with GPS
location and lists of your best goodies. It's also great for planning a
community yard sale, so don't be afraid to get your neighbors involved! And
if you end up having a whole bunch of stuff that doesn't sell, but you don't
want to just toss in the dumpster, a storage service like Clutter will come
to your house, pack it all up, and store it for you for a nominal fee.

I am so happy you have a new Apple Watch.

To answer your question, "no," there is no option for touch-typing in Watch OS,

Is There a Bug in the Watch OS Timer App?

2017-12-27 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

Yesterday, I attempted, without success, to set a custom countdown time via
the timer app, on my Apple Watch running the latest OS.

Try as I may, I could not activate the Start button as it remained, dimmed.

Steps to reproduce:

1.
Using the Timer Complication, launch the Timer app.

2.
Select Custom.

3.
Set any time interval and attempt to activate the Start button.

Can anyone reproduce this bug?

Perhaps it has already been posted to the list?

Thank you,

Mark

Re: Is There a Bug in the Watch OS Timer App?

2017-12-27 Thread John JD Denning
Interesting, I’ve never experienced any such problems with the timer. And I use
it daily, often multiple times a day. The most common way that I started though
is with Siri. Though I have done custom timers and selected one of the already
pre-defined timer buttons. Good luck on tracking that down. I hope somebody has
an idea.

Hi Mark,

I haven't tried doing it that way, but I have successfully used Siri on my
watch to set a timer many times.

Take care,

Subject: Is There a Bug in the Watch OS Timer App?

Hello Everyone,

Yesterday, I attempted, without success, to set a custom countdown time via
the timer app, on my Apple Watch running the latest OS.

Try as I may, I could not activate the Start button as it remained, dimmed.

Steps to reproduce:

1.
Using the Timer Complication, launch the Timer app.

2.
Select Custom.

3.
Set any time interval and attempt to activate the Start button.

Can anyone reproduce this bug?

Perhaps it has already been posted to the list?

Thank you,

Mark

Kind of wish touch typing was a thing on the apple watch. I am really
feeling the urge to buy one but trying to hold off a bit longer. I am
glad I did cancel my preorder back in early October because. I didn't
want to have to wait a month to get my watch. Now if I order one I can
get it in a couple days.

Re: Apple Watch and Touch Typing

2017-12-27 Thread Alex Hall
Just to add to this, I don't think Apple Watch has any concept of a keyboard.
There's no normal typing, just preset replies, dictation, and handwriting with
one finger. Thus, the passcode keypad is a bunch of buttons, not an actual
keyboard. It would be nice to have the option of just lifting a finger, but
right now, I don't think that's possible even for Apple. They'd have to change
the underlying software to tell it what a keyboard is. The good news is that
you can set things to unlocking your phone will also authenticate your watch.
Just strap the watch on, unlock your phone, and you're done. No need to keep
the phone unlocked, either.

Hello Lois and All,

After having received all of your replies, I used Siri to set a custom time.
Subsequently, the custom timer function, as described in my original post, now
works perfectly.

Very weird, to say the least.

Thank you all for your help on this one.

Hello Everyone,

Yesterday, I attempted, without success, to set a custom countdown time via the

Try as I may, I could not activate the Start button as it remained, dimmed.

Steps to reproduce:

1.
Using the Timer Complication, launch the Timer app.

2.
Select Custom.

3.
Set any time interval and attempt to activate the Start button.

Can anyone reproduce this bug?

Perhaps it has already been posted to the list?

Thank you,

Subject: Recommendation for WiFI extender

Hi

I had terrible trouble with my home network until I got a couple of Google
Wifi points. I had tried all sorts of different extenders, but the mesh type
really does the job.

>From what I recall, it was relatively easy to set up, the most difficult bit

The app will also give you reports on-the status of your network, internet
connection and which devices are on and off line. I think there is a 24 hour
support line, but I’ve never used it.

Regards

Adrienne

RE: To Janina Sajka Soft phones?

2017-12-27 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Jonothan,

Thanks for that, I’ll be in touch.

I sent a few e-mails to the Cisco accessibility desk and just essentially gave
up.

My Cisco IP phone on my desk has a button that allows me to speak a name and it
will dial it. I have memorized the voice mail button and luckily my office did
not enable the roaming feature that requires one to login to the phone every
morning in order to receive calls.

There is a cisco branded IP communicator for Windows that I can get to answer
and make calls with but I have to remember that F2 is to pick up or hang up a
call. I think Cisco also mentioned jabber clients would work, but I did not
pursue.

I should still have the conversation lurking in my Exchange mailbox somewhere
if you want some start up points.

I believe the accessibility desk for Cisco might be maintained out of NZ or AU
so at least you wouldn't have a time differential when communicating with them.
In fact when I worked on a daily basis with Cisco support, I usually found the
Australian office better than the UK or US offices for resolving issues. though
that was a dozen years ago.

Contact me off list if you want to find a solution together.

Best Wishes,

Jonathan

The standards world is hoping to solve this wi
