I see a similar sluggishness in Safari and more so in Google Chrome.
Not as snappy as Sierra.

Hi Vic,

could you post an example homepage? I don’t experience sluggishness in High
Sierra in Safari. The only web side I experienced that was some years ago and
this web page was just a huge table with 20 or so columns and several hundreds
rows. Pure horror! ;-)

How to setup your own VPN with macOS Server
Monday, May 29, 2017 at 8:00 am EDT

Want a VPN but don't want to trust a third-party service? Roll your own with
macOS Server!
If you've decided you need a virtual private network (VPN)
but you don't want to pay for a third-party
VPN service , then macOS
Server can be a great alternative. It's built on the macOS you already know and
love and lets you quickly and easily get your very own VPN up and running.
Set up macOS Server

If you haven't already done so, download and install macOS Server
 and optionally
enable remote administration

for easier setup.
Find your router's internet facing IP Address

Before we begin with the actual setup of the VPN service, you'll need to know
your internet "co-ordinates" — your router's IP address.
It's quite easy to determine your current IP address simply by Googling: "What
is my IP Address". Most home users have what's called a dynamic IP address
, though. That means that your
router's IP address may change every so often.

If you use a dynamic IP address to setup your VPN service, there is no
guarantee that you'll have that IP address will still be yours in the future,
and the remote connection will fail.
To work around this, there are a number of dynamic domain name services
you can purchase. That way, you'll
get an alias known as a "host name" that won't change, even if your IP address
does.
Many ISP's also offer what's known as static IP address. These are typically
used for business accounts but, depending on your ISP, can be available for an
addition fee.
Once you have your static IP address or have a host name for your dynamic IP
address, you can go on and configure your VPN service in macOS Server.
Configure the macOS Server VPN service

Launch the Server app from your applications.
Log into your macOS Server.
Select VPN under the Services listings.

Under VPN Host Name, enter either your static IP address or dynamic host name
depending the method you used when finding out your IP address above.
Click Edit Permissions and select the users you want to be able to connect to
your VPN.

Create a new Shared Secret. The more complicated and random the better.
Optionally click Client Addresses if you want to change the number of VPN
clients that can simultaneously connect to your VPN server.
Optionally click DNS Settings if you want to change the default DNS server your
VPN clients will use when connected to your VPN server.
Optionally click Routes if you need special networking routes you need to
configure.
Optionally click Save Profile if you wish to create a configuration file so
that clients can simply load your server's connection information for easier
client setup.
Select your macOS Server computer name.
Select the Access tab.

Click the Add button (looks like +) and select VPN.
Select Allow Connections From only some users.
Enter the users you wish to have VPN access.
Click OK.
Select VPN under the Services listings.
Toggle the ON/OFF switch to On.

If you're on a Apple-centric network with an Airport Base Station, you'll be
prompted to automatically setup your Airport Base Station to allow for
connections to your macOS Server VPN service.
If you don't have an Apple Airport Base Station, you'll have to manually setup
your router to allow for VPN traffic to travel through your router to your
macOS Server. Here's how!
Allow VPN traffic through your router to macOS Server

Depending on who manufactured your router, you'll have to consult the
documentation from the manufacturer to be able to allow VPN traffic to your
internally networked macOS Server running the VPN se

App for cleaning up your contacts

2017-10-23 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hello,
I have a contacts list that is very messy to say the least. It looks big but
that’s because there are lots and lots of duplicate contacts, so now i wonder
if there’s an accessible, good app that works worldwide that can clean up
duplicates and merge different contacts if there is different info in the
duplicates or at least get rid of those pesky duplicates?

Hi Krister,

In the Contacts aapp itself under the card menu there’s an item “look for
duplicates…”. When activated, it will show you duplicate cards and you can then
use another menu item to merge duplicates into one card.

Join Me in Reporting Twitter for iOS v7.10 Moments and TrendsForYou VoiceOver Accessibility Bug

2017-10-23 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I am cross-posting this to both the V iPhone and Mac Visionaries mailing
list.

As of the latest Twitter for iOS app, v7.10, released today, TwitterMoments
and TrendsForYou are not VoiceOver accessible.

Please join me in reporting this issue.

The following is the review I posted in the App Store. You are welcome to
use any or all of it in your feedback to Twitter:

[BEGIN REVIEW]
SUBJECT:
Request to Fix TwitterMoments and TrendsForYou VoiceOver Accessibility Bug

Unlike in previous versions of the app, in the latest release of Twitter for
iOS (v7.10), VoiceOver, Apple's software screen reading solution for the
blind and low vision, cannot access TwitterMoments and the "TrendsForYou"
feature of the Twitter service.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

1.
Make certain that VoiceOver is enabled.

2.
>From within the Twitter for iOS app, select the "Search and Explore" tab,
located near the bottom center of the display. The current headline article
will be displayed. This area of the screen is VoiceOver accessible.

3.
Either by single-finger swiping from left-to-right or using
explore-by-touch, place VoiceOver focus on the "Trends for You" heading,
located just above the middle center of the display.

4.
Now, single-finger swipe from left-to-right in order to read the currently
trending article headlines. In previous versions of the app, the trending
article headlines would be read, out loud. Now, however, swiping from
left-to-right results in nothing being read, out loud, even though there are
trending article headlines being displayed on the screen.

5.
Either by single-finger swiping from left-to-right or using
explore-by-touch, place VoiceOver focus on the "Today's Moments" heading.

6.
Now, single-finger swipe from left-to-right in order to read the Twitter
Moments article headlines. In previous versions of the app, the Twitter
Moments article headlines would be read, out loud. Now, however, swiping
from left-to-right results in nothing being read, out loud, even though
there are Twitter Moments article headlines being displayed on the screen.

I fervently request that this VoiceOver accessibility bug be addressed as
soon as possible.

Thank you,
[END REVIEW]

Here is my tweet on this issue:
[BEGIN TWEET]:
In #iOS @Twitter v7.10 app, #TwitterMoments and #TrendsForYou areas are
inaccessible to the #VisuallyImpaired, via #VoiceOver. @Support
[END TWEET]:

The following is the text of the feedback I submitted via Twitter's feedback
tool, which has a 500-character limit:
[BEGIN FEEDBACK]
In the latest release of Twitter for iOS (v7.10), the TwitterMoments &
TrendsForYou areas are completely inaccessible to the visually impaired, via
VoiceOver. Please fix as soon as possible.
[END FEEDBACK]

Post your request in the App Store, as a review, send a tweet to both
@support and @Twitter, and Submit feedback to Twitter via the feedback form

remotely controlling another Mac

2017-10-23 Thread Kristeen Hughes
A friend of mine just purchased a new iMac. He would like me to help him set it
up and configure it, and I am happy to do that. I was wondering, however, if
there was a way for me to connect to his Mac at all The Way one JAWS user could
connect with another JAWS user using tandem mode in the PC world.

Thank you for any information you can provide.

Apple Remote Desktop does exist. There’s been tons of mixed reviews on it. If
you’ve got the command-line experience SSH is what I’d recommend.

Re: remotely controlling another Mac

2017-10-23 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

As mentioned, Apple Remote Desktop can do that, although it's not so easy from
different networks. Screen Sharing is also built-in to the Mac, but sound is
not passed through, so hearing VO output is impossible without some other
method of channeling the sound. The basic problem you're going to run into is
that, if you're really trying to do this for the initial setup, none of these
tools will have been installed, so whether it's ssh, tandom or any other remote
operation, establishing that connection will be extremely problematic.

Later...

blocking phone numbers in ios

2017-10-23 Thread jean parker
Hello All:

A simple question I hope. I am still using IOS 10 point whatever and would like
to block a couple of phone numbers that have recently come from robo callers.
There used to be something in the edit fields for phone numbers to do this but
it has disappeared. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,

Hey Jean,

Navigate to the phone number you want to block and tap on the more info button.
Swipe through this screen and I think the block this caller is in there..

HTH,

ps-this feature only works if the person calling hasn’t masked their
number-g!

iTunes Radio Stations

2017-10-23 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

Is it still possible to create new iTunes radio stations if one does not
subscribe to Apple Music?

I attempted to create a new radio station in the iOS 11 Music app, but was
unable to do so without first agreeing to subscribe to the Apple Music
streaming service.

All replies welcomed.

Producing large print music on mac

2017-10-23 Thread Mark Muscat
Hello

I am writing on behalf of a client of mine who is studying music and is
using a mac for their tasks.

She is interested in having her music printed on A3 size pages in large
print. Is this possible and if so what apps should we consider?

Many thanks in advance.

5 reasons to use Edge in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update - CNET

2017-10-23 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I am posting this because Apple compatibility is mentioned in the article.

Mark

5 reasons to use Edge in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update - CNET

CNET How To - Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 11:05 AM
5 reasons to use Edge in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update - CNET
With Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, Microsoft has added a handful of new
features and tweaks to its Edge browser. I doubt they will be enough to pry
you away from your browser of choice, but the Edge browser continues to
trend in the right direction. Here are the five big improvements Microsoft
has made to Edge with its most recent Windows update.
Pin pages to the taskbar
Not seen since Windows 8, you can once again pin websites to the taskbar. To
do so, click the triple-dot button along the Edge window's right edge and
choose Pin this page to the taskbar.

You can put your favorite websites on your taskbar for fast access.
Screenshot by Matt Elliott/CNET
True full-screen mode
Edge finally has a true, full-screen mode where you lose the browser's menus
and tabs at the top. Hit F11 to toggle in and out of full-screen mode or
click the triple-dot button and then click the diagonal double-arrow button
to the right of the zoom controls.
Better integration with your phone

Edge promises to let you start an article on your phone and then pick it
where you left off on your PC, but you'll need to use a preview version of
Edge for iOS or Android or the Cortana app for iOS or Android to try it out.
And you'll need to connect your phone to your PC in the new Phone section of
the Settings app, which you'll find on the main page of Settings. I tried it
out by installing the Cortana app on my iPhone ($849.00 at Apple). I opened
a news article and tapped the blue button to continue reading on my PC. It
worked seamlessly; as soon as I tapped the button on my phone, a new tab
opened on Edge on my PC.

Heading home? Send the article you are reading on your phone to your PC.
Screenshot by Matt Elliott/CNET
Better bookmarking
Click the star button in Edge (or hit Control-D) and you'll see Edge's
bookmark menu got a design refresh and better illustrates the folder
hierarchy for your favorites, making it quicker and easier to find a folder
to plop a new favorite. And on the Favorites hub itself, you'll find two new
items on the right-click menu -- Sort by name and Edit URL. The former lets
you arrange a list of favorites alphabetically and the latter lets you
quickly edit a favorite's URL.
Better PDF and eBook reader
Microsoft added a few tools to make Edge more capable with PDFs and eBooks
for touchscren PCs. With PDFs, you can now click the Add Notes button to the
right of the URL bar to ink on the PDF, from signing your name and
highlighting lines to adding comments and copying text. It's particularly
useful for signing documents -- no longer will you need to add a weird
electronic signature or, worse, print, sign and scan a PDF in order to send
back a signed copy.

You can add highlights and notes to eBooks as well as PDF files.
Screenshot by Matt Elliott/CNET
For eBooks, students (and habitual notetakers) will rejoice at being able to
mark up eBooks as you read them. Just highlight some text and a small menu
will appear that lets you highlight the text, underline it, add a comment,
copy it or open a Cortana panel along the Edge window's right edge without
leaving the page you are on.

2017-10-23 Thread Michelle's Home Emails
Hi Mark,

There are a couple of choices.

Your client could get someone to enlarg
The music on a3 paper done on a photo copier.

Or the other option is to get Gm fusion and put windows as a partition o on
your mac but you would need to install Jaws o and a program called goodfeel
which comes from dancing dots. They do have a program which can be put on a
iPad limwriter
Pls go to www.dancingdots.com

Hope this helps. I will send an email to Bill McCann who owns dancing dots
and knows a lot more than I do.

Good luck

Re: remotely controlling another Mac

2017-10-23 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Kristeen,

Yes, you can do this. You need to install TeamViewer and Skype on both
machines, the full TeamViewer on yours, and TeamViewerQS on your friend’s. Your
friend will have to give you his TeamViewer ID and password and you can then
control his machine using VoiceOver, as long as you turn VoiceOver off on your
own computer. Skype allows you to hear the VoiceOver feedback from your
friend’s machine.
Using the free version of TeamViewer, each connection can last up to 3 hours.
It then disconnects automatically.
Cheers,

Anne

RE: Accessibility of one drive and google applications for a project.

2017-10-23 Thread Simon Fogarty
No, one drive does not give you 1TB of data,

One drive for business does which is a tender from within the Office 365 suite,
This costs you money and is something you get if you purchase office 365
(2016) online,

Within windows you can connect with either windows built in one drive app or
download the onedrive app,
On your IOS device you can download and install the one drive app which does
both business and free,

There is now a one drive app but well it's never really been reliable on the
mac, this might have changed
I know through office 365 it works
One drive the free subscription only gives you 5 gig as MS dropped it a year or
two back from 15GB to 5

When I used One Drive, I remember there being a One Drive app for Mac. If you
subscribe to Office 365 you get a terabyte of disk space. I think the reason I
stopped using One Drive is because I had a problem with not all files being
synced between computers. Google Drive seems more reliable.

How to setup your own VPN with macOS Server
Monday, May 29, 2017 at 8:00 am EDT

Want a VPN but don't want to trust a third-party service? Roll your own with
macOS Server!
If you've decided you need a virtual private network
(VPN) but you don't want to pay for a
third-party VPN service,
then macOS Server can be a great alternative. It's built on the macOS you
already know and love and lets you quickly and easily get your very own VPN up
and running.
Set up macOS Server
If you haven't already done so, download and install macOS
Server and
optionally enable remote
administration
 for easier setup.
Find your router's internet facing IP Address
Before we begin with the actual setup of the VPN service, you'll need to know
your internet "co-ordinates" — your router's IP address.
It's quite easy to determine your current IP address simply by Googling: "What
is my IP Address". Most home users have what's called a dynamic IP
address, though. That means that
your router's IP address may change every so often.

If you use a dynamic IP address to setup your VPN service, there is no
guarantee that you'll have that IP address will still be yours in the future,
and the remote connection will fail.
To work around this, there are a number of dynamic domain name
services you can purchase. That way,
you'll get an alias known as a "host name" that won't change, even if your IP
address does.

  1. Launch the Server app from your applications.
  2. Log into your macOS Server.
  3. Select VPN under the Services listings.

  1. Under VPN Host Name, enter either your static IP address or dynamic host
name depending the method you used when finding out your IP address above.
  2. Click Edit Permissions and select the users you want to be able to
connect to your VPN.

  1. Create a new Shared Secret. The more complicated and random the better.
  2. Optionally click Client Addresses if you want to change the number of VPN
clients that can simultaneously connect to your VPN server.
  3. Optionally click DNS Settings if you want to change the default DNS
server your VPN clients will use when connected to your VPN server.
  4. Optionally click Routes if you need special networking routes you need to
configure.
  5. Optionally click Save Profile if you wish to create a configuration file
so that clients can simply load your server's connection information for easier
client setup.
  6. Select your macOS Server computer name.
  7. Select the Access tab.

  1. Click the Add button (looks like +) and select VPN.
  2. Select Allow Connections From only some users.
  3. Enter the users you wish to have VPN access.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Select VPN under the Services listings.
  6. Toggle the ON/OFF switch to On.

2017-10-23 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Mark,

Thanks for this,
Interesting read again,

Edge is a new thing for Jaws users as they have only just managed to get jaws
18 working with it, Jaws 2018 is meant to have even better accessibility
features in edge,

Personaly I'l stay using IE till they kill it.

5 reasons to use Edge in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update - CNET

5 reasons to use Edge in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update - CNET With Windows 10
Fall Creators Update, Microsoft has added a handful of new features and tweaks
to its Edge browser. I doubt they will be enough to pry you away from your
browser of choice, but the Edge browser continues to trend in the right
direction. Here are the five big improvements Microsoft has made to Edge with
its most recent Windows update.
Pin pages to the taskbar
Not seen since Windows 8, you can once again pin websites to the taskbar. To do
so, click the triple-dot button along the Edge window's right edge and choose
Pin this page to the taskbar.

You can put your favorite websites on your taskbar for fast access.

True full-screen mode
Edge finally has a true, full-screen mode where you lose the browser's menus
and tabs at the top. Hit F11 to toggle in and out of full-screen mode or click
the triple-dot button and then click the diagonal double-arrow button to the
right of the zoom controls.
Better integration with your phone

Edge promises to let you start an article on your phone and then pick it where
you left off on your PC, but you'll need to use a preview version of Edge for
iOS or Android or the Cortana app for iOS or Android to try it out.
And you'll need to connect your phone to your PC in the new Phone section of
the Settings app, which you'll find on the main page of Settings. I tried it
out by installing the Cortana app on my iPhone ($849.00 at Apple). I opened a
news article and tapped the blue button to continue reading on my PC. It worked
seamlessly; as soon as I tapped the button on my phone, a new tab opened on
Edge on my PC.

Heading home? Send the article you are reading on your phone to your PC.

Better bookmarking
Click the star button in Edge (or hit Control-D) and you'll see Edge's bookmark
menu got a design refresh and better illustrates the folder hierarchy for your
favorites, making it quicker and easier to find a folder to plop a new
favorite. And on the Favorites hub itself, you'll find two new items on the
right-click menu -- Sort by name and Edit URL. The former lets you arrange a
list of favorites alphabetically and the latter lets you quickly edit a
favorite's URL.
Better PDF and eBook reader
Microsoft added a few tools to make Edge more capable with PDFs and eBooks for
touchscren PCs. With PDFs, you can now click the Add Notes button to the right
of the URL bar to ink on the PDF, from signing your name and highlighting lines
to adding comments and copying text. It's particularly useful for signing
documents -- no longer will you need to add a weird electronic signature or,
worse, print, sign and scan a PDF in order to send back a signed copy.

You can add highlights and notes to eBooks as well as PDF files.

For eBooks, students (and habitual notetakers) will rejoice at being able to
mark up eBooks as you read them. Just highlight some text and a small menu will
appear that lets you highlight the text, underline it, add a comment, copy it
or open a Cortana panel along the Edge window's right edge without leaving the
page you are on.
