Re: me.com e-mail address.

2017-08-12 Thread David Chittenden
I have no idea. I switched to my icloud.com address when it was offered because
I have had email addresses disappear on me in the past. It is also why I use
gmail.

Kind regards,

Re: question for those of you with Macs with the touch bar

2017-08-12 Thread Alex Hall
Note that using numbers for f keys doesn’t always work. For instance, you can’t
use fn-accent to escape from menus, but you can do so to close VO dialogs. I’ve
been using a Touch Bar since last winter, and I still haven’t worked out when
this does or doesn’t work.

The option I’d suggest is to use the trackpad or keyboard commander. With it,
you can assign any functions you use a lot to keystrokes or gestures, thus
negating the use of the f keys to a large degree. Remember, too, that volume
can now be controlled with vo-equals and vo-dash, so that’s two more you don’t
need to worry about.

Finally, a quick note on the Touch Bar: you can’t customize it. macOS lets you,
but VO has a hard time, and you’ll probably be unable to get anywhere with the
process. At least, I can’t. Sighted help will be required until Apple sorts
this out. You can use the Bar with no problem at all, but you can’t change
what’s on it. Most of the time you won’t want to, but if you do, you’ll need
some help for now. Congratulations on your upcoming Mac!

Re: filters in mail on mac?

2017-08-12 Thread Alex Hall
Hmm, you’re right. I do use the normal view, and when I went to classic just
now, my own filter option vanished. I’d say switch away from standard for a
moment, toggle the filter, then switch it. back. That’s the easiest way I can
think of to solve this.

Re: question for those of you with Macs with the touch bar

2017-08-12 Thread Donna Goodin
Hey Alex,

Thanks for all this! It's great info. I had no idea about the new volume
control commands, they're way easier than going into the rotor. I might give
the trackpad commander another go. I tried it a while back, and gave up,
because it seemed I was always brushing it with my wrists and thus making some
undesired action happen. :) I already use keyboard commander, so I may have to
think about adding commands there, too.

I'm way excited about the new Mac. I'm using a 2013 MBA, and though it's had a
good run, I'm ready to upgrade.
Take care,
Donna

Re: me.com e-mail address.

Me.com is the address you used to get for iCloud email. It's
been replaced with iCloud.com. Those of us who were around when apple was
giving out me.com addresses have one of each. So I have
doniado...@me.com and doniado...@icloud.com
. I never ever use the latter.

Re: question for those of you with Macs with the touch bar

2017-08-12 Thread Janet Ingber
Hi Alex and All,

Here’s how to customize the Touch Bar in Mail:
1. Select “Customize Touch Bar” from the View Menu.
2. VO-Right Arrow till you hear, “Section 2,” and interact with it.
3. VO-Right and Left Arrow to review options. Select the addition you want
with VOSpace Bar.

1. Remove an item by going to Customize Touch Bar in the view menu.
2. On the Touch Bar, double tap on the item you want to remove.

Not all applications have this feature.

Best,
Janet

 Hi all,

I'm going to get my new Mac this weekend, and a question has occurred to

another modifier? I'm thinking of things like turning cursor tracking on

I have both my Mac mini and a bluray player connected and it
automatically switches to the highest numbered active input. So the Mac
is on port one, which means that by default it is usually sent to the
display. The BluRay is on port 2 so when I turn it on the HDMI is
automatically switched to that. After we're done watching a movie or the
like I turn the BluRay player off and it switches back to the Mac. I
have a slightly different unit than the link above because I needed one
that splits out the audio to a separate TOSlink cable for my ancient
Denon sound system that predates HDMI.

Re: question for those of you with Macs with the touch bar

2017-08-12 Thread Alex Hall
Thanks, but I’ve never been able to get this to work. Sometimes, I have
sections 1 and 2, but often I don’t. In this view, my touch bar is always
blank, meaning I have no icons to double tap for removal. There’s no indication
of what’s in the bar and what’s not, and focus jumps from section to section,
if sections appear at all. That’s been my experience at least.

Re: Accessible iOS App - Where To Shoot by NSSF

2017-08-12 Thread Cara Quinn
Awesome Jenine! Actually there is someone else on the VIPhone list who
contacted me as he is wanting to get into archery and does not know how to
begin.

Perhaps I could connect you two if you wish. Just let me know off-list.

I found this app as I am looking for outdoor ranges in my area which have steel
targets so I can hear them.

there is a nice indoor range I like but paper is just a bit too quiet for my
taste! :)

I am also looking to get into archery so I am planning to check out one of the
gun clubs which has an archery range around here.

Anyway, glad you’re digging the app!

Cheers!

Re: Accessible iOS App - Where To Shoot by NSSF

2017-08-12 Thread Cara Quinn
Hey Scott,

Jeez! I was going to say I could come and visit you to tweak you a little bit
in person when I am in the area, but dang, there’d be nothing left of me to
bury! lol!

How did you happen to come by a vintage grenade launcher anyway if I might ask?

There’s a little gun shop near me which has all sorts of vintage full auto
firearms but I’m betting they don’t see too many weapons like that.

I am friends with a luthier who creates crazy contraptions on the side. He has
a giant home-made multi-colored day-glow cannon that he shoots bowling balls
out of up in the mountains. They go about five miles! lol!

I’ll just settle for my little 9mils. :)

I am lousy with an AR 15 but awesome with 9s.

There is supposedly a blind shooter up in your area whom I believe has
developed an audio-based scope. Apparently he’s quite good with it.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of ear protection do you use with your m79?
-Or do you use any?

Anyway, thanks for the interesting post and glad you like the app.

I was glad to find it.

Cheers!

I used to have a source for small beepers that were flat disks you could stick

shotguns. If you hit the drone the wings make a huge puff and you just replace
them so it’s all reusable.

Very cool app, thanks for pointing it out.

Interesting?
How do you locate the steel target?
I haven't wielded a long bow since I shot my first "buck many years ago.

Re: filters in mail on mac?

2017-08-12 Thread Christina C.
Thanks, That’s a great idea. Also, in the View menu via Vo plus M There is a
Disable/enable filter option. It also states that the shortcut key is command
plus L. 🤔 I just have no idea how I created one in the first place. haha.

Again, Thanks,

Re: Accessible iOS App - Where To Shoot by NSSF

2017-08-12 Thread Cara Quinn
Hi Chuck,

the short answer is I will be trying several ways.

When shooting indoors, I have always just gotten an idea where the target is in
relation to the stand and then shot free-hand. I would assume that a similar
thing would be possible for a blind / VI archer. -but the arc of the arrow
would certainly add more difficulty I would think, but since you’ve shot
before, I am betting you’ve already got that figured out.

One approach I plan on trying is to use Voice Vision, the iOS app to see if I
can possibly make heads or tails of any targets. I’ve not actually used it for
indoor ranges since I have just not really needed any assistance like that.
-But outside, with different types and sizes of targets, and possibly greater
distances, I’m pretty sure I will, and I’d like to see how it can work.

I may also just go up into the mountains, to a legal area to shoot and then set
up something that friends and I can use. In that case, since I know where
things will be, that will be a bit easier.

I have ear protection which can accept stereo input so I plan on sending my
iPhone output (running Voice Vision) into that so it will mix with the external
sounds.

-And lastly, I will have friends around to visually insure safety and to let me
know where certain targets are if I need it.

As I mentioned in response to Scott earlier, I believe someone (I don’t have
his name handy at the minute) has developed an audio scope. So I am planning to
get in touch with him to see if I can either purchase one or if he would be
willing to accept a commission to make one. I think the only ones he has might
be prototypes but I am not sure.

So we’ll see.

Sorry I can’t be of more help. When I have a chance to try my hand at archery,
I will certainly let you know what I find works well for me. I believe archery
targets would be reasonably easy to hear using something like Voice Vision or
an audio scope of some kind but I just can’t say without trying it.

However, since there are others on the list who have an interest and are
experienced archers / shooters, maybe they can be of more help.

Anyway, good luck and have fun! :)

Cheers!

Cara

How to put your old phone to new use - CNET

2017-08-12 Thread M. Taylor
CNET News - Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 5:00 AM
How to put your old phone to new use - CNET
It's time to upgrade to a new phone. So what do you do with your old one?

If you're like me, you probably have a drawer full of old smartphones
collecting dust. You could always trade them in for cash, but unless you
have a newer Android phone or an iPhone, you probably won't get much for it.

What should you do? One thing is certain. Don't just throw it away.
According to a United Nations Environment Program report titled "Waste
Crimes," up to 50 million tons of electronic waste -- mainly computers and
smartphones -- are expected to be dumped in 2017. Smartphones are full of
metals, minerals and chemicals that when disposed of in landfills or
incinerated can become toxic.
In this edition of Ask Maggie I share what I like to do with my old devices.

Dear Maggie,
Between my husband and me, we have a mountain of old unused smartphones.
What should we do with them all?
Thanks,
Trying to Stay Green
Dear Green,
If your old phones still turn on and work, there are lots of things you can
do with them. Of course, you can always give them to a friend or family
member who needs a phone or even keep them around as backups in case your
new phone is lost, stolen or broken. But there are plenty of other uses for
them, too. While this list is by no means exhaustive, here are some of my
favorites, most of which I use at home.
For more ideas of what to do with your old cell phone, check out this CNET
video.
Camera/video recorder
I don't know about you, but I take a ton of photos and video on my phone. I
don't even know where my DSLR is anymore. I have small kids and juggle all
their gear, so my smartphone is super easy to carry and whip out for taking
photos and videos. But one place I am reluctant to take my phone is to the
beach. And yet I still want those adorable pics of the kids eating sand --
er, I mean building sand castles and frolicking in the waves.
Why not use one of those old phones in my drawer? While my old Samsung
Galaxy S3 may not be water-resistant or sand-proof, I'd rather risk getting
my old phone wet, sandy or stolen than my brand new device. And because it
has Wi-Fi, when I return to a hotspot, all my photos and video can be
automatically synced to Google Photos, just like pics and video from the
smartphone I'm currently using.
Bedside device/alarm clock/photo album/white noise machine
Phones are a great bedside gadget. Just set up a docking station charger and
you're good to go. First they make fantastic alarm clocks. They're endlessly
customizable. You can set multiple alarms and even get calendar alerts to
remind you of an early meeting.
Second, they're perfect for displaying digital photos. There are tons of
apps in iTunes and Google Play that turn your device into a digital photo
frame.
Another great use for a phone on the nightstand is as a white noise machine.
Again, there are too many apps to name, but there are several free apps in
both the App Store and Google Play that will lull you to sleep with the
sound of rolling waves, whirring fans, or falling rain.
eReader
Whether you already have an e-reader or not, clear out all your other apps
and storage on your old phone and load it with e-books and audiobooks. You
can either leave it on your night stand or next to your favorite comfy
chair. Apps like Amazon Kindle let you sync your reading position among
multiple gadgets. You can also use apps like Pocket or Instapaper to queue
up web articles you find throughout the day on your desktop or phone so you
can read later.

There are tons of ways to repurpose old phones, so long as they still turn
on and off.
James Martin/CNET
TV remote control
If your phone has an IR blaster, download a TV-remote app like AnyMote
SmartRemote or Sure Universal TV Remote. These apps and the IR capability
allow you to turn your old smartphone into a universal remote. It will also
work to control other devices with an IR signal, such as DVD and Blu-ray
players, cable set-top boxes, stereo equipment and even some air
conditioners.
And if your phone doesn't have an integrated IR blaster, your phone will
still be able to control your Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV devices or
connected TV via Wi-Fi.
GPS device for car
I moved to the suburbs of Philadelphia two years ago after 17 years of
living in New York City. At first, I couldn't find my way out of the my
neighborhood, let alone the best route to the grocery store. My phone and
Google Maps were my savior. And even though I can now get to the store or my
kids' school without GPS navigation, I still need it for any new
destinations.
Even though I rarely leave home without my current smartphone, I keep an
older Moto X set up in my car to use as a GPS navigation device. All that's
needed are some maps of my local area downloaded onto my phone from Google
Maps. And voila, my old phone is a GPS device. It doesn't eat up my data
plan either, because all the maps and na

Apple "appears to have Alphabet's Google in the crosshairs," Rachel Gunter
writes for Market Realist. "Last month, Apple added Virgin Mobile USA to the
list of its US carrier partners. The last time the company recruited a
carrier partner was in 2013."
"As part of the deal, Virgin and Apple are throwing a one-year party in the
form of steep discounts for their customers," Gunter writes. "Any customer
who purchases a new or refurbished iPhone from either Apple or Virgin gets
the opportunity to enjoy services on Virgin's network for only $1 per month
for up to a year. After that introductory offer, customers will normally pay
$50 a month for Virgin's network service."
"The deal is part of a broader plan that will see Virgin drop support for
Android phones on its network and instead become an iPhone-only carrier,"
Gunter writes. "The deal that Apple has inked with Virgin could accelerate
Android's market share decline in the US."
