Re: Keeping iOS apps in sync with Mac

2016-05-15 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
You can’t transfer from your iOS 9 device to iTunes. Every app that’s
installed on your device, even those you copy from your iTunes library, is
already sliced. If it came from the store, it was sliced before you downloaded
it on your device. If you transferred from iTunes, then iTunes has sliced it
for you as it transferred it. The only way to do what you want is to download
with iTunes and then sync; that way you maintain the full-fat copy of the app,
for any device, and can roll back an app by deleting the new version and
importing the .IPA file of the older one prior to syncing. If you turned on
Automatic Downloads in iTunes, you can automate the process of downloading new
purchases. With Time Machine on standby, even updating your apps in iTunes is
a relatively safe process, because you can always turn to Time Machine for last
week’s .IPA file. But, you have lost the convenience of updates happening
automatically on your iOS device, and you must remember to throw away apps on
both iTunes and iOS to be rid of them for good; you can’t simply add or remove
from the one device. Moreover any app that you install after your initial
purchase will not download to iTunes, so don’t forget to download on both if
you want it back.

As I said, all of this was too much for me, and I now simply manage everything
from the device, and let the cards fall where they may. It makes me less eager
to try new stuff, but hey, I’m old enough now that that doesn’t bother me so
much. :) And really, what critical apps do you have that you aren’t 100% sure
of their accessibility? I’ve seen very few pullings from the store that have
ever mattered to me, in practice, and I always buy from reputable, accessible
developers. And if you exercise the refund process, you don’t need to be held
hostage to your purchases by a broken app; just move on and get the app
refunded within the refund window. If Apple would like my enthusiasm for
purchasing to be rekindled, they can feel free to actually commit to some
proper standards for app submission that include accessibility. It’s no skin
off my nose. Until then, the worst thing that can happen to me is that an
update will break, and I’d say the odds of that happening are small enough with
the apps I have that I’ll take the risk, and if it does happen, I’m fairly
confident I can contact the devs and get it fixed, or leave a suitably
disappointed one-star rating. JMO, but life really is too short to be left out
by this silly requirement to be conservative about updates.

You can find the Purchased link on the App Store. You should find all your
apps, no matter where you downloaded them. Don’t use the menu button; you want
a link that says “Purchased” and it’s under Quick Links on a store page. For
example, go to Apps, then App Store, and there should be one there that
defaults you to your apps. Be sure to set “All” and not “Not in my library”.
The button at the bottom of the page will download the lot.

You need to make sure your Apple TV is set so that descriptive video does

Re: Apple store now stocking accessibility items

2016-05-15 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
I also read that one could spill coffee or liquid on these new braille displays
and they would still work as they are very tough and rugged meant for outside.
I may be lucky to view one of these displays soon so if I do, I’ll report back.

About the Freedom Scientific, you can clean the cells as you can go in to the
tools menu or press the on button and the last two cell routing buttons when
the display has no power and the pins go up. Just in case no one knew that.
One of the reasons why I chose the displays I don’t know if any other displays
do this. I’m a bit out of touch with what displays do these days.

By the way, what is a VU? You wrote that you like that your VU is
 completely silent.

As for me, I am a big fan of the Focus 40 Blue.

One thing I cannot stand about using the Focus 40 Blue, in iOS
particularly, is that one cannot switch the panning keys.

Currently, although this was not always the case, one could use the left
panning keys to advance the Braille display. Now, one can only use the
right panning key to move right and the left panning key to move left.

I, however, read Braille with my right index finger. In so doing, I much
prefer to pan with my left hand, only. As it stands, I must now read and
pan with my right hand. This causes an enormous amount of fatigue.

In Windows, using Jaws, there is a reverse pan feature, thank goodness.

I say all this to say that my next Braille display purchasing decision
will be based on whether or not the device has a hardware, rather than a
software, feature to allow reverse panning.

If any of you know of such a device, please let me know.

 Mark

Re: Apple store now stocking accessibility items

2016-05-15 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
The Handytech display needs to be upgraded to work with the iphone.
They put a newer bluetooth module onto it.
Costs to much imho.
I don’t remember exactly but the pricing was very high.
Sad because the HandyTech displays imho are one of the most ergonomic displays
i’ve ever used.

 Hi Chris,

It's incredibly nice to see that Apple is doing this at all. However it
looks like the only braille displays they carry our humanware. In my view,
that's a serious limitation, humanware and freedom scientific being the
least interesting braille displays on the market. No offense to you
humanware fans. I just think it's too bad that they're not carrying Hims
 products or Baum products. cheers,

Re: Problem with voiceover

2016-05-15 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
You turned on mute. Do you have a trackpad commander turned on. If so, then you
can triple tap with three fingers in it should say voice on. Otherwise look for
another way to switch mute.

Best wishes,

Re: Keeping iOS apps in sync with Mac

2016-05-15 Thread E.T.

Mark,
That ius not what I am after but Sabahattin pointed me to where I
need to go and put installed apps back in the iTunes library. I did put
to use your idea of keeping a separate stash of the apps which will
resolve what in my opinion Apple broke even though it makes sense...to
them..

Hello E.T.,

I am not certain I understand your question but, assuming that I do, the answer
is that in order for a full copy of the app to be copied from the computer to
the iOS device, it must be in your computer's local iTunes Library.

For example, every six months or so, I will manually copy the folder containing
all of my apps, to a remote drive with the time and date of the copy. I do
this for several reasons, one of which is to insure that, if my local drive
gets damaged, I will not lose the older apps that can no longer be downloaded
from the app store.

Even though I am a huge fan of the latest version of 1 Password Pro, for
instance, I continue to use the original version of the app that was released
back during iOS 6 or 7. Fortunately for me, the developers of 1 Password Pro
changed the file name and profile of the later version so that I can have both
the original version and the latest version on my iOS devices, simultaneously.
This is not unusual. Many developers, upon releasing a major new version of an
app will change its filename and developer profile--allowing for a kind of dual
installation. This is not their objective, of course. They want you to delete
the old version and use the new one but, some old-timers like me, hate letting
go of what works well. (smile)

It is no longer possible to obtain the old version of the app. Consequently,
were I to lose the actual .ipa file from my iTunes Library (while at the same
time deleting the app from my phone), all things being equal, I would forever
lose the old version of the app.

I hope this helps to clear things up a bit.

Oh, why do I continue to use the old, outdated version of 1 Password Pro?
Because, my needs are very simple and I do not need all of the new Vault
configurations, iCloud syncing, etc. In the old version, one only has to type
in a simple PIN and all of my wallet passwords are right there, easily
accessible. Given that I use Touch ID to unlock my phone and given that my
phone will auto erase if someone enters the wrong password too many times and
given that I only need to lookup passwords once every 2 months or so, for me,
the old version is just fine.

Hi Mark,
Looks like a good plan you use. I had been thinking about doing encrypted
backups and will as soon as I figure out why it does not like my password.

Here is what I am confused about. Since iOS 9, apps that one installs on
an iDevice no longer transfers to the iTunes library. Apps that were previously
installed prior to iOS 9, if they are deleted and re installed, will not be
transferred.

To take your scenario of ensuring an updated app remains accessible, if
that app is no longer in the library, what then? It may be I am making more of
this than I need to but I am or was, used to seeing all of my apps in that
library.

In terms of making sure that you have an accessible version of your apps, the
only solution, at this point, is to manually download the current version into
your iTunes Library, from the App Store on your Mac. And do not sync your iOS
apps from your device until you have confirmed that it's latest update is also
accessible.

Here is a typical scenario I follow:

1.
I update to app X on my iPhone. It is accessible and I like the app.

2.
In iTunes on my computer, I download app X. So, now I have the same version of
app X on both my phone and my computer. Please note that I did not connect my

Three months later, when checking for app updates on my phone, I discover that
there is an update to app X. So, I update the app. If the app continues to be

Got it. Thanks! I located that area and redownloaded all the apps
then copied the whole folder to another location for safekeeping..

I do not fuss too much about updates. I was just surprised that I
was not seeing new apps I installed after upgrading to iOS 9 go into the
iTunes library.

In my mind the question still remains, how are restores done now?
Are the backups still complete with all installed apps? I also decided
to use encrypted backups but after entering password, was unable to

But, you have lost the convenience of updates happening
automatically on your iOS device, and you must remember to throw

away apps on both iTunes and iOS to be rid of them for good; you can’t simply
add or remove from the one device. Moreover any app that you install after
your initial purchase will not download to iTunes, so don’t forget to download
on both if you want it back.

As I said, all of this was too much for me, and I now simply manage everything from the device, and let the cards fall where they may. It makes me less eager to try new stuff, but hey, I’m old enough now that that doesn’t bother me so much. :) And really, what critical apps do you have that you aren’t 100% sure of their accessibility? I’ve seen very few pullings from the store that have ever mattered to me, in practice, and I always buy from reputable, accessible developers. And if you exercise the refund process, you don’t need to be held hostage to your purchases by a broken app; just move on and get the app refunded within the refund window. If Apple would like my enthusiasm for purchasing to be rekindled, they can feel free to actually commit to some proper standards for app submission that include accessibility. It’s no skin off my nose. Until then, the worst thing that can happen to me is that an update will break, and I’d say the odds of that happening

are small enough with the apps I have that I’ll take the risk, and if it does
happen, I’m fairly confident I can contact the devs and get it fixed, or leave
a suitably disappointed one-star rating. JMO, but life really is too short to
be left out by this silly requirement to be conservative about updates.

Using Aria on the web

2016-05-15 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
So, we are having a discussion on the Windows 10 mailing list about something
which has really got me thinking on the mac side of things about this.

Someone, in summary, wrote in asking how to rewind, play/pause and fast
forward, with Youtube. It was advised to them to press J for rewind, K for
play/pause, and l for fast forward.

Clearly, these are being coded by Aria, if I had to guess. Either that or it's
just html5, but my guess is the former.

At any rate, I'm seeing lots of web sites these days pop up like this. The
main Facebook site is another one. Realize, I'm speaking of the full web site,
not the mobile version. You can do things there like hit C to comment, S, I
think it is for a new status message, J and K to move back and forward through
your list of statuses from your friends, etc.

So, here's the thing. In Windows, most screen readers have a browse mode type
of thing. So, JAWS, for instance calls it the virtual PC cursor, and when
turned off, your in what is known as forms mode. Window-Eyes calls it Browse
Mode, and, I could be wrong, but I think NVDA calls it the same thing.

Sorry to throw so much off topic Windows based stuff in this message, but I
have to in order for you to get the concept of my over all question as it
relates to Voiceover on the mac.

Normally, in Windows, these browse modes have to be disabled in order for these
keystrokes to work. For example, in JAWS, normally if you hit J, that jumps to
a certain line number on the page. K will jump you to your next placemarker,
and I think L is for the next list if I'm not mistaking. So in order for it to
not be interpreted as such, and pass that key to the actual web browser, one
either has to pass the key through, or more commonly, just turn off browse mode
altogether for the time being.

Well, now getting back to the mac side of things, Voiceover in html content
areas, such as in Safari, don't have a virtual buffer. They just basically
render as is. When in a text field, just start typing, for example. NO need
to shut off browse mode. Now yes, there is single letter navigation which you
can use in combination with quick nav, but let's just assume for a minute that
the user isn't using that, nor is using quick nav. They simply are just using
VO+left and right arrow conventionally, and nothing more. If they need to jump
by heading, rather than hitting h, they're hitting command+VO+H.

This said, how do you get those Aria keystrokes to work? Does one first have
to hit VO+Tab to pass the next key through, or is that not necessary? Is there
some mode you gotta get Voiceover into for it to work? I've not seen anything,
and believe me, I'm extremely advanced of a Voiceover user. You'd think if so,
I'd a seen it by now. Is it more just a matter do the keystroke anywhere
making sure first to not be focused in a text area where you're typing in the
characters? Yeah, you get the point.

How's this done?

Chris.

Re: Using Aria on the web

2016-05-15 Thread Devin Prater
As it states on the Facebook accessibility site, nothing needs to be done. Just
press the key, and it'll work. Currently, you have to be in "group navigation
mode" for voiceover to speak when moving from status to status in Facebook, in
the newsfeed, but besides that everything works fine.

Re: Consistently degrading lightning cables

2016-05-15 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Let me put it this way, if my cat is jumping about 4 and a half feet in the
air on to a ledge smaller than a stair banister, then, yeah, maybe. She's
not even allowed in the room where I keep the cable though, and the fact
that if I'm not literally using the cable then I unplug it and it's in a
drawer, so I very highly doubt this is the case.

My mother got that cable home I told you all about with the blue L E D
lights. She thinks it's made by someone called Atomy? She may be
remembering the spelling wrong though. They're not cheap. They're about 14
or 15 bucks a piece from Bed, Bath and Beyond, but they're so! worth it!
For one, it's a double threaded cable, meaning, it kind a reminds me of how
an old fassion phone cord that plugs into the wall would feel. You know how
they usually feel like two cords put together, one on the left side of the
cable and another on the right? Almost like a split cord is the best way I
can describe it. Not like a Y cord, that isn't what I mean. I'm not sure
how else to explain it. It makes the cord wider though by doing this. The
little L E D lights go all the way from the plastic lightning tip all the
way down to the plastic end on the other end of the cord. The USB end that
goes into the computer/mac/wallblock is really nice. The actual metal USB
male plug itself on the end of the cord is jutted out just a tad from a
plastic housing block which is around the end of the cord. No, it doesn't
get in the way. Think like an electrical transformer that goes in the wall.
You have the two metal prongs on the transformer itself. OK, now imagine
that, only instead of electrical prongs, think the metal USB plug instead.
That's basically what this looks like. The other end that goes in the
phone/IPad/Apple TV remote, or whatever, is much wider. Notice, I didn't
say thicker. I said wider. Even in my Otterbox case, where things are a
bit squished together on account of the way the case is designed, it's not
so wide it won't fit. It actually fits even better than the native cord.
When I push it into the lightning port on the phone, the click is so firm,
and so definite that it's incredible! Also, because of the extra wideness
at that end, it makes grabbing the plastic instead of the end of the actual
cord insolation an absolute breeze. I have fairly big fingers, yet even for
me, it's very very very easy to grab ahold of and gently, but firmly pull it
out.

So yeah, it's not a cheap cord, I'll grant you that, but the quality is
absolutely superb! I'd highly recommend these things. OK, they're only 3
feet long, but you could always get a USB extender if you really really
needed it.

Just press the key, and it'll work. Currently, you have to be in "group
navigation mode" for voiceover to speak when moving from status to status in
Facebook, in the newsfeed, but besides that everything works fine.

So, we are having a discussion on the Windows 10 mailing list about
something which has really got me thinking on the mac side of things about this.

Someone, in summary, wrote in asking how to rewind, play/pause and fast
forward, with Youtube. It was advised to them to press J for rewind, K for
play/pause, and l for fast forward.

Clearly, these are being coded by Aria, if I had to guess. Either that or
it's just html5, but my guess is the former.

In Windows, most screen readers have a browse mode
type of thing.

Normally, in Windows, these browse modes have to be disabled in order for
these keystrokes to work. For example, in JAWS, normally if you hit J, that
jumps to a certain line number on the page. K will jump you to your next
placemarker, and I think L is for the next list if I'm not mistaking. So in
order for it to not be interpreted as such, and pass that key to the actual web
browser, one either has to pass the key through, or more commonly, just turn
off browse mode altogether for the time being.

Does one first
have to hit VO+Tab to pass the next key through, or is that not necessary? Is
there some mode you gotta get Voiceover into for it to work? I've not seen
anything, and believe me, I'm extremely advanced of a Voiceover user. You'd
think if so, I'd a seen it by now. Is it more just a matter do the keystroke
anywhere making sure first to not be focused in a text area where you're typing
in the characters? Yeah, you get the point.

How's this done?

Chris.

2016-05-15 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
No, aria is more redefining certain HTML to look like other things on a
computer. Like tabs or push buttons that can be questions they pushed so if you
saw something that said selected there's a good chance that that's being done
with aria.

macbook pro question

2016-05-15 Thread don bishop
Hi all,
Don't think my original message went through so here goes again.
I am getting a macbook pro and I have heard that voiceover will come up
automatically several seconds after the machine starts so you can use the setup
assistant with speech.
Is this truch? I'd really like to do the whole thing withou sighted assistance.

Thanks,

Don

Yes, this has been the case for several years. I did so in 2011 when I switched

Re: Consistently degrading lightning cables

2016-05-15 Thread Ben J. Bloomgren
Okay, I have not seen it happen in a couple of months, but the cable
which originally came with my old iPhone Five did degrade to the point
at which I was scared that I'd get shocked or it'd mess up the phone in
some way. The chord to my iPhone Six S hasn't seemed to do that yet, but
I'm paranoid due to my previous experience. Chris, you may have an
aberration, but Apple does need to rethink the Lightning chords, if they
want to maintain their proprietary ways.

OK, I wonder if anyone else is having, or has had this problem.
Over the years, I've bought quite a few devices that use lightning
cables. Anything from my old IPhone 5, 5S, 6Plus, 6S, a few Apple TV
4's, etc.
Point is, after about 2 or 3, if I'm lucky, months roughly, it seems
like the end of the insolation right where the lightning connector is
that goes into the device, that area seems to keep getting cut/torn.
Usually it's not so bad that the cable stops working, but it's bad
enough that it definitely has the potential that at any moment, it
could get worse. I have one cable now which is almost 98% sebbered
all the way through both the insolation and the actual wire itself.
It's pretty pathetic. It seems like most all my cables eventually are
getting to this point, and I swear, I'm not misusing them. I'm just
plugging them in, and unplugging them as normal.
Apparently, I'm by far not the first person who's had this issue. If
you just Google online, you'll find lots of forums and blogs, etc. of
people who've had the same issue quite regularly. So apparently, it
must not be just me.
Is it just these things are really badly designed? I'm on hold right
now waiting for Apple to pick up to see if maybe they can replace a
few of these chords, but I'm not very hopeful. They might, but I'm
not counting on it.
I'm just wonderring if any of you guys have also found your cables
tearing, getting cut, or worse on a consistent basis right at the tip
of the cord like I am. If so, what are you all doing to get around
this, so you don't have to keep buying cord after cord after cord
every few months. This alone is starting to make me reconsider iOS
devices. At least, ones with lightning connecters.
Lightning's great, but the cords appear to be crap in my opinion based
soly on what I so far have observed. Again, that's stated as an
opinion, not a fact. Keep that in mind.

Chris.

High End software audio player

2016-05-15 Thread Terje Strømberg
Ok, here we go.

The accessible audio player is called Audirvana Plus. It may even work with
Apple IR Remote. Physical little remote for use also with tv is my
understanding. I will try it with Audirvana Plus later. If it works it will be
cool. Audirvana loads albums and tracks into ram. So beautiful fast when
playing from ram when i use command + right arrow for next song and space for
pause. Its like the keys are not touch down before the next song loads or
paused. Very very cool to experience this. Even in TIDAL playlists. Tidal is an
integrated option. Recommend it if you want cd quality playback loaded into
ram. Audirvana also plays high resolution audio 24bit 192khz and the DSD, DXD
high resolution audio if your dac supports it. Cd quality 16bit 44khz is good
enough maybe, but if you want to try, here it is a little accessible software
player. Theese high res audio files needs to be stored on harddrives or memory
sticks etc. Not a solution in Tidal yet.

So, it has Tidal ann three more for me unfamiliar streaming services. Tidal
works side by side the audio you rip or buy and download. They can make a
playlist for downlaoded and ripped music. Then another playlist for Tidal. They
cannot be mixed into one playlist from both stored and sreamed audio. However,
you can put songs and albums from both in play queue, but this is not stored on
disk. This is only stored in ram. Your computer ram.

1. Go into voice over tools vo + f8, navigation, hit a mark for mouse follows
voice over cursor. This is nesscessary to be able to hit play whenever you want.

2. Open Audirvana Plus. You can hit vo-command + home and hit view full screen.
Vo + j works for moving beteen list and tables. In table there are interact as
usual and vo + up - down aroows as usual on tracks name. Here is why mouse have
to follow the voice over cursor: when you are at the corect song, you use the
physical mouse button to hit twice and it is allright. Don’t move the mouse,
just double click. Afterwords, the command + right and spacebar works in the
same playlist or album.

3. Command + comma to open settings. Go into toolbar, sound system button, down
to low level playback, hit a mark for exclusic access mode, direct mode. Not
integer mode. Leave integer mode empty. Go down to maximum memory and give
Audirvana Plus about 65% or more to play with. Otherwhise chose your dac,
amplifier name as output device above at the same side.

4. Go to tools, sysoptimizer. Give Audirvana every rights. When you hit stop
button all the memory goes back to mac osx. Only if you hit stop button or
close. It works. Not pause, but stop or close.

5. Streaming. You get a free TIDAL for a couple of weeks or so. It may be
reasonably straight forward to get an account. Log in if you have an account
works easy.

There are only one bug i have found. Often, when you go from stored music into
TIDAL the Audirvana gets the «busy» bug. A simple restart works. You have to
open the option - command + esc terminate window though. Go into the bable and
finish it with enter twice and option - command + esc + close the terminate
dialog again. At my end, with the setting above, it works.

Of course ther ar more options in the settings you can choose and should.

In my opinion it looks like SONOS is the most user friendly accessible
application. Because you can mix playlists from harddrive, memory sticks,
ripped lp’s, apple music, TIDAL, Deezer and other supported SONOS streams. You
also have the IOS apps. Don’t even know if Audirvana Plus have IOS app.
Regarding user friendly the SONOS is best on IOS.

Audirvana on the other hand as an extra accessible tool for audio music on the
mac osx. It is accessible on mac osx. Audirvana can play high resolution files.
Audirvana loads songs and albums into ram. Your mac’s ram. So cool to hit space
and next song. Feel the speed under your fingers. Also the point is, here you
have an accessible music app that can play high resolution music files on your
mac. That SONOS not will play. Not saying it will sound better, but Audirvana
is an extra option for special recording or two.

I wil probably use both SONOS and Audirvana in the future.

Take care
