2016-01-26 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Simon,

Generally speaking, I recommend the Edge over the Legend.

Below I am going to paste in my original comments on the Edge along with a cNet
review of the product.

I hope you find it useful.

Original Post from Mark:
Subject: I Strongly Recommend The Plantronics Voyager Edge Bluetooth Single-Ear
Headset

Hello Everyone,

After all of the comments regarding the Voyager Legend headset, I decided to
purchase a new Bluetooth headset, also.

Because of a couple of things I don't like about the Legend, for example the
proprietary charging connection, I decided to go with the Voyager Edge.

I love this device. It is absolutely the most comfortable and responsive
Bluetooth device I've owned, to date. I have owned and used no fewer than
18 Bluetooth headset devices since 2007. The Edge builds on the Legend's
outstanding performance but returns to some industry standard protocols, for
example, the original charging cable connection. Like the Legend, it does have
a hardware on and off button.

What I really like about the Edge is that one can disable some of the features
of the device, for instance, the auto Answer/Reject prompts. There have been
many times when I was talking to someone when a call came in and the headset,
not a Plantronics, would automatically interpret my last spoken word as answer.

Below I am pasting in a short cNet review of the Edge at the bottom of which
you will find the URL to the review, itself.

Please note that the review was written almost a year ago. The reason I
mention this is that it states that the Edge cannot get 7 hours of talk time,
as can the Legend. However, this is no longer true. The unit I just purchased
gets over 7 hours of talk time.

Also, the Edge now ships with an over-the-ear loop and soft ear-jell tips.

In short, I would strongly recommend anyone who is in the market for a high
performance blindness-friendly single-ear Bluetooth headset device consider the
Voyager Edge.

Mark

cNet Review:
The Good The Plantronics Voyager Edge packs outstanding call quality and noise
cancellation. The headset is also light, comfortable to wear, and compact for a
boom-style device. The Edge comes with a handy battery case for protection and
charging on the go.

The Bad The Voyager Edge's ear tips don't form a tight audio seal and take some
fiddling to position properly.

The Bottom Line The Plantronics Voyager Edge's impressive hands-free call
quality and sleek size makes it a smarter buy than the fashionable Jawbone Era.

Equipped with support for multiple languages, aggressive noise cancellation and
a host of other advanced communication skills, the $129.99 Voyager Edge
represents Plantronics' latest stab at a high-tech tool for mobile voice chat.
It sits alongside the company's popular Voyager Legend ($99.99), another
premium hands-free product. Additionally, the Edge replaces the Discovery 975SE
which was crafted to be as sleek as possible without sacrificing call quality.

Indeed despite it's compact size, the Edge uses the same impressive audio
system as its big brother the Voyager Legend. This includes three discrete
microphones and a boom arm to better pick up the words you say. The result is
sound transmission that's equal to the Legend and cleaner than its chief
competitor, the bite-sized Jawbone Era 2014 ($129). Of course the Edge can't
match the Legend's 7-hour talk time or the Era's ultra-discreet de

Design
Continuing where the 975SE left off, the fresh Voyager Edge has the same
distinctive diamond-shaped body. Relatively compact, the Edge sports a long,
thin boom, too, which houses its microphone array. It also relies on a design
that forgoes a bulky earloop, an approach the Legend and Jabra Motion take.
Even though the Edge is a lot smaller than these gadgets, it's nowhere near as
tiny as the bite-sized and recently refreshed Jawbone Era. But while the Era
lacks any physical controls save for a power switch and multifunction button,
the Voyager Edge sports a real volume rocker and voice command key. Like the
Era, the Edge uses a standard Mini-USB port for charging up and interfacing
with PCs.

As for wearing the Voyager and overall ear fit, I find that the Jawbone Era
more comfortable than the Edge. That's because the Era's teardrop silicone ear
gel is much softer than the tough, rubbery sleeve around the Edge's earbud. The
Era also has a tighter seal and ultimately is more stable, probably since its
pliable and pointed ear gel actually enters the ear canal. The result is I can
really jam it in there. This is a huge contrast to the Edge whose earbud is
meant to sit outside and at the entrance to the ear. Initially it felt less
secure to me, but I admit I prefer in-ear earphone styles.

The Edge is trim and compact, yet makes room for physical buttons. Sarah
Tew/CNET

After fiddling with the Edge's ear tip for a spell, however, I was able to find
my personal sweet spot. Basically if I

Re: Mac Chrome with VoiceOver

2016-01-26 Thread Erik Burggraaf
Hi,  I've been using chrome for a few months now.  Some sites work in either
chrome or safri, but not both.  So, there is still some flipflopping here.

Benefits of chrome.
Tab and bookmark sync to my Android phone.
Integrated flash.
Greater stability when loading large pages or sending forms.

Disadvantages of chrome.
No selecting text using shift and arrows.
Instability of the item chooser.
No article reader.
No bookmarks bar and associated hotkeys.

All in all, I'd rather have safari back, but I need a stable browser.  Chrome
is that, and safari isn't.

Best,

Erik

Re: Internet Radio Broadcasting on the Mac

2016-01-26 Thread Nektarios Mallas
Hi there.
I am using NiceCast with vlc for my radio broadcasting needs.
Unfortunately, the voice over plugin doesn’t work as expected.
However, I am sure that the first few times I tried it the music volume was
going down when the mic was on. There must be an accessibility bug somewhere
that prevent us to control the voice over plugin.
Right now what I am doing is to turn the mic on, and then lower the music
manually as I speak from the vlc window with command “ down arrow.
Then I race the volume up with command + up arrow and turn the mic on from the
voice over window.
I know this is not an ideal solution but that’s what I am doing until something
better comes up.
I also tried Djpro but the mic doesn’t work there correctly also.
Regards.
Nektarios.

Are you thinking of the Fujitsu scansnap?  That's a great piece of hardware,
but the software bundled with it stinks for accessibility.  It also doesn't
really meet your portability reqirement.

Re: Headphone bug still exists on the I phone.

2016-01-26 Thread Scott Granados
Only 18 headsets Mark, why so few?

:)

As someone who also changes headsets like they do clothes, I also like both of
these head sets. I however am the reverse of you and prefer the Legend over
the edge and heres my thoughts, let me know if you think I’m nuts or not.

The noise cancelation on the legend is the best. The edge is very good don’t
misunderstand but the legend is just that little bit extra. I have tested both
in very high noise environments (data centers with powerful cooling and tens of
thousands of nodes). Both do well, the legend is a bit easier for the far end
caller to hear in my experience and while both have excellent battery life the
legend is a bit better and will give you in my experience a full work day.
The Edge is great for someone who wears glasses because you do not have
to use the loop to wear it safely and comfortably. However, the legend can fit
behind your ear and while it’s more bulky glasses can be negotiated.

I would break them down this way. The edge is the more stylish light weight
version that you might wear to business meetings or out etc. Similar to the
jawbone it’s very stylish and has a stylized shape etc. If what you want
though is a serious work horse that has the absolute best noise cancelation and
is designed for use in harsh environments the legend is for you. Bottom line
though and I think Mark would agree both are great headsets.

I do like your point on the proprietary cable but I would point you at the
excellent charging case you can get for the legend where using that magnet it
fits nicely inside and gives you extra charges on the fly. Also gives you a
reset button so you can reset the hardware if needed which I haven’t had to yet.

Nice to see another headset enthusiast. Honestly I have yet to find one that I
would give 5 stars but I am very picky.

Disconcerting DropBox issue

2016-01-26 Thread Mike Busboom
Hi.

I have a DropBox account with 1 TB and love it! I have DropBox on my Mac, as
well as on my iPhone 6.

A disconcerting problem that I have only recently started experiencing is that
not all of the folders I created are appearing on my Mac. The DropBox on my
iPhone shows all twenty folders, but the DropBox on my MacBook only shows three
or four of the folders. I originally created all of the folders on my MacBook.

Does anyone know what I can do to regain access to all of my DropBox folders.
I am concerned that if I remove the DropBox program from my MacBook and then
re-install it, I could lose everything.

Any insights would be most useful and greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Re: Disconcerting DropBox issue

2016-01-26 Thread Phil Halton
I'd check the synchronization in the account settings first. You'll need cited
help unfortunately, this is one screen that you can't see the check/unchecked
status with voiceover. Anyway, if you can get a cited friend to look at that
synchronization screen you can look at the left side of each folder to see
which are checked and unchecked. It's possible that something went wrong there
and that many of your folders are not checked for synchronization. Good luck

Re: Disconcerting DropBox issue

2016-01-26 Thread Mike Busboom
Hello Phil,

Thanks for the advice. Are these account settings in the “Menus Extras”
section of the Mac, where there is a DropBox dropdown menu, or where do I find
them?

When I used Spotlight on my MacBook to locate folders in DropBox that weren’t
showing up on the MacBook side of the equation, I came up empty.

Since I need sighted assistance that I may not have here at home, can you
recommend a program that would enable someone to remotely look at my MacBook
screen and assist me?

Thank you very much,

Mike

Hi Scott,
Is the legend a current device? What I like about my old Voyager is that behind
that ear loop. It feels very secure. And I don't have to stuff the tip into my
ear. For me, that is a big deal. I'm not thrilled about the proprietary
charging, but maybe that case would make it worth it.

though as he felt more strongly about it. It’s a regular USB port on one end
and the other is a magnetic fit cable that cradles the base of the headset. It
works pretty well but it is non standard.

If you had the voyager it’s very similar. The voyager pro is the preceding
version to the legend if memory serves. The legend is the current model and is
available for about $60 or so on amazon which is much less than the $129 retail
price so definitely shop it around.

The Voyager Edge though as Mark mentioned is very good. Try them both out and
pick the winner for you.:)

Just to make sure you have all the information to make the most informed
decision, as mark mentioned, there is a removable behind the ear loop included
with the edge as well. Both can be fastened to your ear securely. Just so you

 nuts or not.

The noise cancelation on the legend is the best. The edge is very good
don’t misunderstand but the legend is just that little bit extra. I have

The Edge is great for someone who wears glasses because you do not have to
use the loop to wear it safely and comfortably. However, the legend can
fit behind your ear and while it’s more bulky glasses can be negotiated.

I would break them down this way. The edge is the more stylish light
weight version that you might wear to business meetings or out etc.
Similar to the jawbone it’s very stylish and has a stylized shape etc. If
what you want though is a serious work horse that has the absolute best
noise cancelation and is designed for use in harsh environments the legend
is for you. Bottom line though and I think Mark would agree both are
 great headsets.

I do like your point on the proprietary cable but I would point you at the
excellent charging case you can get for the legend where using that magnet
it fits nicely inside and gives you extra charges on the fly. Also gives
you a reset button so you can reset the hardware if needed which I haven’t
 had to yet.

Nice to see another headset enthusiast. Honestly I have yet to find one

Question From A Client About Voices

2016-01-26 Thread BBS
Hi guys. I'm writing this message for a client I'm teaching the Mac to.
We're having issues downloading the Nuance voices. She wants to be able to
use Samantha on her Mac like she does on her iPhone. We download it from the
Voiceover utility but when we try to use it, nothing happens. We tried
deleting it from her voices in her library and redownloading it but still it
doesn't want to work. She gave me a link to a podcast of some sort to learn
how to download the voices but I've done it so many times I don't really
need one. Any ideas? Because I'm really stumped at this point. Thanks in
advance.

Blind drones and tech mailing list

2016-01-26 Thread Scott Granados
Hi all, hope Mark won’t mind but for folks on the android list you’ll have
heard I’m experimenting with autonomous flight and drones specifically how the
blind can use them or if the blind can even use them. We’ve already
established the if part and the answer is a definite yes so now we’re working
on the different devices, flight methods, different technologies and at this
point just a general familiarization with the field. Anyone interested please
head to google groups and join the blind drones and tech list. Drones are the
specific area of interest but anything technology / accessibility related will
be fair game. I was originally going to do a strict comparison of Apple IOS
verses Android and the drone flight options but it’s gotten much more involved
so I think warrants it’s own list. Anyway, anyone interested come on by and
check it out or write me off list with your email address and I’ll add you

Thanks
Scott

Voiceover being heard by other party in Skype calls on Mac

2016-01-26 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

I had hoped that by wearing headphones, I would be able to keep Voiceover
speech from being audible to the person with whom I am talking on Skype, but
that is not happening. Voiceover comes through slightly delayed on the other
end and it's very distracting. Why is this happening? I would think that if I
have headphones on, Voiceover speech would be audible only to me. Anyone know
if there's a fix for this?
Thanks,
Donna

Sometimes Can't Do Initial-Letter Navigation in Dock

Is it just me, or does it sometimes happen that initial-letter navigation in

I especially notice this when I’m in Safari, trying to get quickly to some
other app in the dock. Sometimes it’s easier and simpler just to use my
Applications shortcut, which is near the right end, or even to use Spotlight or
the Applications folder from Finder. Typing in the dock just doesn’t do
anything at all.

Re: Voiceover being heard by other party in Skype calls on Mac

2016-01-26 Thread Scott Granados
Because you’re like me growing up listening to all that rock and roll music to
loud and you have your headphones on 11.:)

This sounds like a problem with the noise rejection and to me seems like weak
sauce. (that’s a professional assessment. Is it possible you have the volume
very high? What about pairing a bluetooth headset with real noise rejection
and using that as an audio source during calls? It’s a work around but it
should work. Then again it should just work out of the box.

Lol. Yeah, definitely been there with the listening to loud rock on headphones
at a young age. But unlike you, I think I've mellowed a bit. :)

The headphones in question are the Apple earbuds., and no, volume not up super
high. :) Maybe those headphones just suck. I do have a better set of BT
headphones, maybe I'll test it with those. Thanks, Scot!

Donna

2016-01-26 Thread Jeffrey Shockley
Hi,
A lot of earbuds with built-in mics do that, not just the Apple ones. What it
is is the mic picking up your VoiceOver and system audio.. I’ve used just
regular headphones without a mic, and this does not happen.
I hope this helps,

RE: facebook chat for the mac

2016-01-26 Thread BBS
Hi Walter. There used to be a good app for Facebook chat on the Mac called
Trillian but with their recent update they've broken accessibility. I haven't
checked for updates for a week to see if this is fixed because I've been using
Miranda on Windows 10 all this time, but I will probably do that soon because
I'll be going back to the Mac to get ready for my client. I'll report back if
it's fixed.

Re: Disconcerting DropBox issue

2016-01-26 Thread Phil Halton
Yes, they are in the extras menu drop down for dropbox. Also not finding your
folders with spotlight makes perfect sense because there are not on your Mac
hard drive. If they are not synchronized they will not be placed on your Mac. I
would definitely check those synchronization settings to see that all of your
dropbox folders are checked.

RE: Headphone bug still exists on the I phone.

2016-01-26 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Scott,

I think your analysis is spot-on and well-put.

I will defer to you as to which is the better with regard to noise
cancellation. I cannot tell a difference between the two but I do have some
hearing loss that no doubt impairs my ability to judge. I think they both
sound great.

As for battery life, it would make sense that the Legend do slightly better as
it's battery is larger.

I love the fact that I can wear the Edge, without an ear-loop, comfortably.
And, because the earpiece sits outside the ear-canal, I enjoy ambient sound,
crucial to me when navigating about the city.

Sometimes, I have honestly forgotten I was wearing the Edge. A couple of weeks
ago, I was searching for the darn thing when someone said, "Isn't that it, in
your ear?" It really is that lightweight and comfortable, to me.

The biggest deal-breaker for me is the Legends proprietary connector. As a
long-time Plantronics fan, discovering that they had changed the connector, on
the Legend, just ticked me off--it's really that simple and I've never gotten
over that resentment (smile). How's that for honesty? (smile)

When it's all said and done, I think both devices are world-class and worth the
money.

Yes, it is nice to know that there is another headset enthusiast in the group.

Mark

Thanks
Scott

El Cap and App Store

2016-01-26 Thread E.T.

This issue seems to be to be reproducable so I will describe what it is.

I did a clean install of El Capitan 10.11.3 from Yosemite last
weekend. I then did a restore from Time Machine but later found out the
last backup was over a month old. So I selectively restored from Carbon
Copy Cloner the 3rd party apps which I had updated just prior to the
install. And the iTunes library.

The issue comes up when I open the App Store. Voiceover does not
finish speaking the fact, it acts as if something has taken its focus. I
have to do a VO+f1+f1 and choose App Store to regain focus.

This happens after a start up or restart, nothing else is running
that I know of. Everything else that I have opened works fine. Any
ideas? Thanks.

Hi,
I’m seeing this too, or something similar. But, when I command Tab out of the
App Store, and back in again, it reads and everything shows up. But, when I
just open the App Store, and try to read anything using standard VoiceOver
commands, it just says, “App Store has no windows.”
I hope this helps,

Forgot about Cmd Tab. The other thinbg that happens is when I select

Voiceover Hanging with Audio Cutting in and Out

2016-01-26 Thread Kevin Shaw
Further to a message I posted last week.
running 10.11.3 on mid-2009 Macbook Pro. I don’t customize Voiceover that much,
so not running activities or anything like that.

I’m encountering and issue where system audio cuts in and out. Voiceover seems
to hang while this is happening and picks up reading where it left off. I have
turned off sound effects in VO Utility and the problem went away for a bit but
now it’s back, as I thought there may have been audio interference.

Wondering if anyone has encountered this. Could this be a hardware issue?

Kevin

2016-01-26 Thread Jeffrey Shockley
Hi,
I’m seeing this too. I actually forgot about that issue until you mentioned it.
A way to work around it is to press Command 4 I think it is to pull up Updates.
If you look in the Store Menu I think it is, all these shortcuts are listed,
and using them pulls everything up in the area where you can interact and read.
I don’t know why it doesn’t work the other way like you have been doing it. But
hey, at least you know it’s not just you. :)

Re: The Martian Released on iTunes, Audio Described

2016-01-26 Thread Grant
I’ve observed something interesting. When I search for this movie in the iTunes
Store either on my Mac or iPhone, and bring up its details, the following is
listed under the Languages heading for the primary language: "English (Dolby
5.1, Subtitles, CC, AD)”. Presumably, CC stands for closed captioning while AD
stands for audio description. So it looks like when a movie is described, it’ll
be tagged with AD. I’m totally open to corrections if this is wrong.

I’m not sure how to tell for TV episodes, though, if in fact there are any
described TV episodes on iTunes.

Cheers,

Grant

The Fopydo Reading Aid Stand

2016-01-26 Thread Sharon Hooley
Hi,

Someone recently recommended the Fopydo reading aid. I'd like to know, how
expensive is it, and is the direct website the only place you can buy it? I
found the description in Amazon, but it seems that this feature isn't available
to add to cart. This is something I'm definitely interested in.

Thanks,

Sharon H.

Hello Simon,

Generally speaking, I recommend the Edge over the Legend.

Below I am going to paste in my original comments on the Edge along with a cNet
review of the product.

I hope you find it useful.

Mark

Yeah I wondered that myself but never thought to ask.

RE: Headphone bug still exists on the I phone.

2016-01-26 Thread Simon Fogarty
I can confirm that my bose Bluetooth headset still drops the connection when I
dial a number.

It works fine before and while I dial the number to call but once I hit call
it drops the Bluetooth connection.

I can power off the headset and back on a couple of times and it reconnects
So I'm looking for something that doesn't drop the connection.

RE: Headphone bug still exists on the I phone.

2016-01-26 Thread Simon Fogarty
The edge having up to 16 hours battery life and 7 days stand by is good to hear.

Can firmware on the edge be updated if needed?

I believe it can be on the jawbone devices, at least an old jawbone device I
had it could.

Just to make sure you have all the information to make the most informed
decision, as mark mentioned, there is a removable behind the ear loop included
with the edge as well. Both can be fastened to your ear securely. Just so you
have the full facts.

Thanks

The noise cancelation on the legend is the best. The edge is very good
don’t misunderstand but the legend is just that little bit extra. I have
tested both in very high noise environments (data centers with powerful
cooling and tens of thousands of nodes). Both do well, the legend is a
bit easier for the far end caller to hear in my experience and while both
have excellent battery life the legend is a bit better and will give you
in my experience a full work day.
The Edge is great for someone who wears glasses because you do not have to
use the loop to wear it safely and comfortably. However, the legend can
fit behind your ear and while it’s more bulky glasses can be negotiated.

I would break them down this way. The edge is the more stylish light

Honestly I have yet to find one
that I would give 5 stars but I am very picky.

So Scott and Mark,

I assume as it's been around a while the legend doesn't use Bluetooth 4 and
only pairs with 1 device where as the edge can take 2 at once.

Also what is the difference between the legend and the legend UC

And is the legend as big as the documentation makes it sound?

Mark

Interesting,

I had a friend ask me about this issue when they started running el capitan
10.11.3 beta,
Sounds like it wasn't fixed before going to production.

This issue seems to be to be reproducable so I will describe what it is.

I did a clean install of El Capitan 10.11.3 from Yosemite last weekend. I
then did a restore from Time Machine but later found out the last backup was
over a month old. So I selectively restored from Carbon Copy Cloner the 3rd
party apps which I had updated just prior to the install. And the iTunes
library.

The issue comes up when I open the App Store. Voiceover does not finish
speaking the fact, it acts as if something has taken its focus. I have to do a
VO+f1+f1 and choose App Store to regain focus.

This happens after a start up or restart, nothing else is running that I
know of. Everything else that I have opened works fine. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hello Simon,

Yes, the Edge firmware can be updated; however, I have elected not to update
mine. I had a friend update his firmware and he was not happy with the results
although I cannot remember why.

Like so many things in life, wearable technology is extremely personal. It
took me a long time to discover what it is I (1) want in a headset and (2) what
I need in a headset. I suspect the same is true for everyone.

For me, I prefer single-ear devices that do not impede ambient noise and that
have the smallest proverbial footprint with the greatest amount of playback
features. While I see well enough to use a soft on-off button, I prefer a
hardware on/off switch. I do not use my Bluetooth headset for high quality
sound playback but simply as a way to quickly interact with my phone, while on
the go.

RE: Voiceover Hanging with Audio Cutting in and Out

2016-01-26 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Kevin,

Have you confirmed your audio source in the Sound preferences pane?

A while back, I had installed a program that added an additional audio source
to my list of possible sources. From time-to-time, the source would switch to
the third-party source at which time I would experience audio cut-out, such as
you describe.

My point, just make certain that your output is set to your desired speakers
such as the internal speakers.

I’m encountering and issue where system audio cuts in and out. Voiceover seems

now it’s back, as I thought there may have been audio interference.

Wondering if anyone has encountered this. Could this be a hardware issue?

Re: The Fopydo Reading Aid Stand

2016-01-26 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Sharon,

I’m the one who recommended the Fopydo stand with book reading aid. It costs
$35 plus shipping which depends on where you are.
As far as I know, the book reading aid is not yet available from Amazon, so
you’ll need to buy direct from the designer and manufacturer.

Cheers,

Anne

The (App Store focus) issue is on my list. It’s been around since the
beginnings of El Cap.

Report it to Apple …

Re: Headphone bug still exists on the I phone.

2016-01-26 Thread David Chittenden
Unfortunately, the legend is somewhat large, mainly do to its boom mic. The
boom mic on my Legend was broken by my keys in my pocket after 6 weeks.

The Edge is similar, though a little smaller, and also has a long boom mic. The
ear clip hurt my ear, so I gave it to my fiancé to use as a spare. She does not
like the large boom mic, so keeps it in the glove box in her car.

My favourite bluetooth earpieces are no longer being manufactured, so any on
sale, even if listed as new, are a few years old. Therefore, the bluetooth
batteries will not be lasting more than a couple years in them.

I have been experimenting with cheap Asian bluetooth earpieces from eBay. Most
are, as one would expect, complete junk. However, I have found two which are
rather decent. One, at around $8 to $14 AUD are an absolute steel. This model
sits in the ear, like a hearing aid. It can fall out if the head is shook to
rapidly, but otherwise works quite well, even when walking on the sidewalks and
streets. I now have four of them, and carry three at most times. The battery
life is four to five hours, and they have only mild lag, so I can use it for
typing with just some adjustment for myself.

The other, at $30 AUD, raps around the ear like the legend, but does not have
the boom mic. Its battery lasts 5 to 6 hours. It has similar bluetooth
performance.

Both require careful placement in the ear for good reception of the mic. Both
use a standard condenser mic with no noise reduction or DSP.
