Looking for a podcast on the notes app on the mac

2016-01-08 Thread denise avant
Hello all,
I’m wondering if there is a podcast on the notes app for the Mac. I’m running
the latest Mac OS. And it seems that the notes app on the mac is not as easy as
the one in IOs. At least that’s my general impression. But maybe I’m
overloooking something.

Re: Looking for a podcast on the notes app on the mac

2016-01-08 Thread Alex Hall
The basic setup is a table of accounts, then a table of notes, then a text area
where the selected note is displayed. On iOS you only see the note, notes list,
or accounts each on their own screen, but the Mac shows everything as it does
in most apps. I can't think if we have a podcast on this, but hopefully the
explanation makes things a little easier.

Re: Confused about bootcamp drivers for windows7 installation on mac

2016-01-08 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
You can get BootCamp drivers either while running BootCamp Utility or from the
Apple Support site. Some earlier drivers (for XP and Vista, for instance) are
only on the DVDs that came with the Macs that supported those operating
systems. With an ISO and BootCamp Utility you should be directed in the
creation of a USB stick with both the copy of Windows and the drivers you need
on it. Alternatively, you can install the drivers from a USB stick separately
from installing Windows from a DVD.

Moving between headings at same level?

2016-01-08 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

How does one do this? For example, if I'm in an email or webpage and want to
go between different headings at heading level 4, how can I do this? I checked
the AppleVis list of keyboard commands, and it looks like the command should be
VO+Command+M, but when I try that, I get the message Same Heading Not found.
And yes, I know there is another heading. :)
TIA,
Donna

Hi,
I just did this earlier in fact.
What you do is turn on Quick Nav, and then you can press the number
corresponding to the level of heading you want to jump to, and it does it. You
first have to go into VO Utility and go to Commanders, and the Quick Nav tab,
and check the box for "Single Letter Webpage Navigation.”
I hope this helps. :)

When I press VO-CMD-M, I get the message Same heading not Found. Not sure why

Re: Braille embossers supported by OS X

2016-01-08 Thread gkearney
OK this is an Index Basic-D embosser built by the Index company of
Sweden. http://www.indexbraille.com This is a very well known company with
a wide range of embossers.

Index does indeed offer a MacOS X embossing solution. It works by means of
a special print driver installed in your Mac. This driver pulls the text
from a document, but not the formatting, and sends that text to the
embosser. Inside the embosser itself is an implementation of the liblouis
Braille translation software which translates the text from you document to
Braille. (you can, using the embosser controls, select the Braille code to
use.) Then the Braille is sent on to be embossed.

This works reasonably well but there is a problem. As good as liblouis is
it, like all other Braille translation software, is not perfect. However
unlike solutions that run on computers there is no way with this system to
intercept and correct any errors that liblouis might have made in the
translation. What ever comes out of the embosser is what you get.

The Index line of embossers as well as most others can also be driven from
the MacOS X CUPS printing interface as well.

Re: Moving between headings at same level?

2016-01-08 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Donna,

Are you having this problem on more than one website? I find since El Capitán,
some websites behave oddly and VO claims that no headings are present when they
are.
Normally, using the Web Rotor, you can type a number in the headings list and
only see the headings of that level. Does this work for you?

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Moving between headings at same level?

2016-01-08 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi Anne,

I'm having it in the AppleVis newsletter, which I'm reading in Mail.
Interestingly, when I go to my Facebook homepage in Safari, all works as it
should. So perhaps the problem has something to do with AppleVis's document.
Cheers,
Donna

Cutting the cable

2016-01-08 Thread Phil Halton
I am seriously considering cutting cable Internet, and using personal hotspot
on my iPhone for Internet access instead. They finally raise the Cable price
one too many times.

My question concerns performance, particularly concerning streaming video like
Netflix and Hulu. I could either set up a personal hotspot and connect Apple TV
to that network, or, I could simply airplay video off my phone over to the
AppleTV. I don't know which might work a little better or if there would be any
performance issues with either choice.

Does anyone have experience with personal hotspot and it's performance? The
only issue I can see is the need to raise my data plan perhaps up to 10 GB, and
even with that extra cost by eliminating cable I would save at least 50 a
month.

Also, I have a home network being broadcast by my Apple time capsule in and
that is connected to the cable modem, although I believe that is not a
necessary connection. Time capsule will still maintain a home network with or
without Internet access.

I would be most grateful for any informed opinions on this matter. I've just
about had it with cable monopolies jacking up the price willy-nilly, And for
poor performance at that.
thanks

Odd usb problem.

2016-01-08 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
I don’t get this.
I can connect my braille display to any usb port on my macbook air.
But i can only connect my keyboard to the usb port on the left hand side on the
laptop.
For some reason the right hand side port does not like my apple keyboard.
Any ideas?

Re: Odd usb problem.

2016-01-08 Thread Gabe Griffith
Hi,
I have seen issues with some computers that depending on the device that could
be a couple of things. One could be that only certain USB ports have enough
power to properly power that device. The other issue could be that depending on
what USB port your keyboard was originally recognized on and how drivers set up
for the computer can always be looking forward on that same port.
Hope that helps a little.
Gabe

So you are getting right to left behavior like you would in Hebrew or Arabic. I
know there was a Unicode character to switch this, I wonder if you can switch
it with that somehow.

RE: Confused about bootcamp drivers for windows7 installation on mac

2016-01-08 Thread Simon Fogarty
Everytime I've done it on my mac mini or my mac book air, bootcamp needs an
internet connection to get the drivers.

One step tells you to locate the ISO for the windows image, then you tell it
where things should be downloaded to and then once it starts looking for the
drivers / installation stuff it will download the apple boot camp drivers to a
usb flash drive and then once that is finished the system comes back and asks
for your mac admin password for the installation then it re starts, oh and in
there also is a prompt to set the size of your windows partition.

Oh and just note that until windows is installed completely and the bootcamp
drivers installed which is the final step
You wont have any voice synthesis
At least I've never been able to get any thing from my bootcamp installations
until bootcamp drivers have completely installed.

Cheers and good luck.
Hope this helps.

Re: Cutting the cable

2016-01-08 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
I can’t offer any opinion on the performance of the networks you’re on,
although it certainly sounds like the US has a pretty rough time of it when it
comes to fixed-line broadband competition. However, I can definitely say that
using mobile broadband as your primary Internet connectivity, while a highly
attractive proposition, comes with pitfalls. Unless you negotiate a certain
level of service, I’d say it made for no better than a secondary option, in
case the primary goes down. It is wireless, so theoretical speeds will never
be achievable in practice. You will have to get a “Mi-Fi” router dedicated to
the task of providing your connectivity, because using an iPhone will probably
prove frustrating (a five device limit, and frequent disconnections as the
phone tries to save power). Then you need to ensure you have the tethering
add-on and whatever data allowance you might need. Finally, most mobile
connectivity uses NAT, so you won’t be running any server services, and you
might experience less performance with peer-to-peer applications.

But, if you feel you want to, why not give it a try? It was fun for me while
I’m holiday—perhaps it’ll be fun for you the whole time. Indeed, I’ll go out
on a limb here and suggest that if you want to verify the efficacy of your
technology choices, you should go on holiday. :)

Apple TV and Time Capsule can both function as wireless clients. Just join
them to your new network. Or, as you said, you could just peer-to-peer stream
to Apple TV, and continue to use AirPort for providing a non-connected Wi-Fi
and Ethernet network (you’ll have to disable the warnings). While joined to a
wireless network, AirPort’s Ethernet ports are useless.

Re: Cutting the cable

2016-01-08 Thread Phil Halton
Well, I tried a little experiment and set up the personal hotspot, logged in
with the Apple TV and then stream TV show on Netflix. That works fine, I
watched a 50 minute TV show without problems. Then I connected my mac to the
Wi-Fi hotspot and tried to stream a video on Safari via flash. That was
disastrous, Lot of buffering issues.
Then I checked my data usage and saw that I used up 1.2 GB with about an hours
worth of video streaming. That will never work. As you said, it will make a
good secondary backup system, but never as a primary Internet access. Oh well,
it looks like Comcast has me right where they want me.

Re: Cutting the cable

2016-01-08 Thread Bill Dengler
Why not purchase an Asus router and set up a NAS or use a USB hard drive? Asus
routers support mobile broadband modems out of the box. You will have to do
some reconfiguring in the firmware to make it work, but it will be much better
than trying to use the phone as a hotspot because it does not have the
limitations imposed by Apple and allows you to connect wired devices to the
network.
Who is your wireless provider?

My carrier is AT&T, but you know, I think I'm just going to bite the bullet and
pay the Comcast price for cable connectivity to the Internet. I just don't have
the time interest or inclination to do a lot of configuring of equipment.

Re: Cutting the cable

2016-01-08 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
What about DSL? If it’s the principle and the caps are all that’s in the way
of going totally mobile, you won’t mind the reduced speeds of DSL. You could
then also go with a business package that gave you better contention, and not
be treated like dirt on cable with many of the throttles that cable ISPs do.
You could also run servers or do exhaustive nightly backups and other things
that you probably can’t now because your upstream is capped or protocols
prohibited, etc.

Cable does run very sweet with Apple AirPort, though.

Just a thought.

I haven’t tested actually restoring from a backup, but it’s just a USB drive
when plugged in, so simply make a copy of the contents. You could use the
“Duplicate” command (Command-D) from your desktop to get a folder on your
desktop with the contents of the drive, for instance.

working with the Juliet.

OK this is an Index Basic-D embosser built by the Index company of

with a wide range of embossers.

Index does indeed offer a MacOS X embossing solution. It works by means
of a special print driver installed in your Mac. This driver pulls the
text from a document, but not the formatting, and sends that text to the
embosser. Inside the embosser itself is an implementation of the
liblouis Braille translation software which translates the text from you
document to Braille. (you can, using the embosser controls, select the
Braille code to use.) Then the Braille is sent on to be embossed.

This works reasonably well but there is a problem. As good as liblouis
is it, like all other Braille translation software, is not perfect.
However unlike solutions that run on computers there is no way with this
system to intercept and correct any errors that liblouis might have made
in the translation. What ever comes out of the embosser is what you get.

The Index line of embossers as well as most others can also be driven
from the MacOS X CUPS printing interface as well.
