Identifying styles in Word

2015-04-24 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello,

Here is how to identify the current style in Word.

Cheers,

Anne

• Make sure you are focused on body text.
• Interact with the Home ribbon tab group.
• Navigate right to the Styles menu button and click it.
• In the pop over, navigate to the Styles Pane checkbox.
• Bring the mouse and click with the track pad (using VO-Space or
VO-Shift-Space may give the impression that the box is ticked, but the styles
task pane will not appear).
• Press Escape to get out of the pop over.
• Stop interacting with the ribbon.
• Navigate right to Styles Task Pane.
• Interact and navigate right to the scroll area.
• Interact with the scroll area.
• Navigate right once past Current style and set a hotspot on the menu button.
• You can now press VO-Cmd-Hotspot number within the body of the document to
learn the current style.

Developing an App

2015-04-24 Thread Josh
Hello All,

I need help finding an accessible program that will allow me to develop
apps. I have never done this so when I Googled the process I received tons
of results, but nothing saying whether it was accessible or not. Can anyone
direct me to where I would go to either listen to a step-by-step
demonstration on creating an app or somewhere that is going to provide
detailed instructions. Alternatively, if someone has the knowledge that they
would be willing to share with me regarding how they create apps on list or
off list on developing this app, read below for description, then I would
love to hear the ideas. Offlist address:

lawdog...@comcast.net

Description of what I am wanting to do:

I am looking to develop an app for my institution where I can have people
post anonymous questions to the app and have others respond to the
questions. The disability department there are concerned that not everyone
is receiving the attention that they need due to not wanting to identify
themselves as having a disability. I feel that the app will accomplish this
goal. There apps out there like I am wanting to create such as YikYak, but
the rules will not be as liberal on the app I am wanting to create as they
are on YikYak. Thank you all for any advice you can offer on this matter.

Re: Developing an App

2015-04-24 Thread Jeff Berwick
I am currently developing my first app using Phonegap/Cordova. Basically, you
develop an HTML5 web page using HTML5, CSS and Javascript and then phone gap
will turn it into a native app by wrapping your code in a web browser container.

You would probably then create a web service on your server to connect to a
database and pass the information back and forth.

Phonegap/Cordova is very well documented and used, so you should be able to
find anything you need on the internet.

Jeff

because it isn’t yet available as a full-fledged functioning program?

Does anyone know if Word works on an iPhone with a bluetooth keyboard, or does

PDF Pen reader for the Mac.

2015-04-24 Thread sadam ahmed
Hello all,

I believe this app was mentioned recently.

I did a quick search on Google and came accross the below link for said app:

http://smilesoftware.com/pdfpen/support.html.

Just want to make sure it’s the correct one?

It costs $124 at least from the website.

Is it also available to purchase from the Mac app Store?

Thanks for any help provided.

Kind regards,

Yes, it is the right web site although you probably don’t need the support
section yet if you have already decided to get the program. I think you can
download a trial version first. There is PDF Pen and PDF Pen Pro. I got the pro
version. With it, you can convert pdf files to text files, Excel files, and
Word files. Maybe there are some others; I can’t remember.

Hi Sadam
If you get the program, please be aware that, to my knowledge, you need to read
pages with PDF Pen page by page by interacting with each one individually. You
want to make sure you get version 7.1; I say that because if you go to the app
store, I’m not sure version is available from it.

Re: Developing an App

2015-04-24 Thread Alex Hall
The first two questions are: do you have a Mac for this, and do you already
know some programming? If you don't have a Mac, you will be hard pressed to do
a lot; if you don't know any programming, I'd start learning basic concepts
first, then start learning Swift.

Re: Developing an App

2015-04-24 Thread Tyler Thompson
Some clarification is necessary before you can receive any real answers to this
question. First of all it appears to me you want this to be web based. Writing
web apps or even websites is immensely different than writing an application
that runs on iOS or OS X. App development (both kinds of apps that I’ve
mentioned above) has been my job now for several years.

Now on a very basic level it sounds to me like you just want a forum that
allows for anonymous posting. Developing this yourself requires a lot of skill
because as soon as you allow people to write information on your server you are
allowing for all kinds of injection attacks. If I were you and I was trying to
accomplish this goal I’d look at using some pre-made forums from developers who
have been doing it for years and have sealed up all the security breeches
you’re bound to leave open if you attempt this yourself without experience.

If you’re looking to develop this on the mac or the iPhone you’ve just
restricted your user-base to apple people. Now I love apple people but your
email eludes that you need anybody from any device to be able to ask a
question, that means you simply must have it be a web app. If you have any
more questions please feel free to contact me on or off the list.

Re: PDF Pen reader for the Mac.

2015-04-24 Thread Sadam Ahmed

Hi Gigi,

Thanks for that.

I'll probably get the Pro version.

Did you purchase from the website or directly from the Mac app Store?

What about VoiceOver support?

I.E. Does the whole program work with VO?

Thanks once again!

Kind regards,

Sadam Ahmed

I can’t remember.

Re: PDF Pen reader for the Mac.

2015-04-24 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
I don’t think we can do everything there is in the program because this program
has some sophisticated things for editing and writing pdf files. You could,
however, train a reader that has Mac experience to do some of the things that
we can’t do.

ONe of the main people there has been answering my VoiceOver questions. His
name is Greg, and he is interested in us giving feedback on the program.

I got it from the app store, but sometimes updates come out a little faster
from the we b site. Also, if there is a reason the program doesn’t work for
you, it’s harder to get a refund if you go through the app store, although I
guess you could.

Hi again.
I forgot to say that it has a very fast image OCR on it. If you have a pdf file
that is an image, it automatically OCR’s the thing. The other thing is that
Greg told me that a sighted person could, and I forgot exactly how he said to
do this, go into an inaccessible file and rename the form fields. If you open a
file that is not set up for us, and you tell the program to find the form
fields, they don’t have names we can recognize; they are numbered. A sighted
person can go in there and rename the fields. At least, that’s the way I
understood it.

It costs $124 at least from the website.

Is it also available to purchase from the Mac app Store?

Thanks for any help provided.

Re: Developing an App

2015-04-24 Thread Scott Berry
Hi Josh,

Do you even have any idea of what language you want to develop in? This might
be a good app for a web site where someone can go to a certain link on the web
site type their question in and then someone else can go to the web site and
answer. Another way might be to do the same with html and have an email sent
with the question and one replies to the email and therefore posts it on the
web site and an email.

Re: Seeking Recommendations for Check Writing Software

2015-04-24 Thread The Believer
There is CheckBook by Splasm Software, and they also have a Pro
version. Both are fully functional. The Pro costs more but the non Pro
is not a limited version, just does not have features most may not need
anyway.

I have yet to work with this app. Its a checkbook register but
likely can also print checks (the Pro version probably).

The trial version will allow entry of up to 100 entries (or perhaps
only 10) so worth testing before you pay for it.

Re: Seeking Recommendations for Check Writing Software

2015-04-24 Thread Mary Jo Partyka
Hi,

The way Talking Checkbook worked was that we had to order a box of check forms
which contained our account number and other identifying information. After
putting one of these fors in the printer, we would go to the talking checkbook
program and press control n to write a new check. The fields would be spoken
aloud and you would fill them in. After the fields are filled in, you can
print the check.

Re: how to use the pdf pen to edit

2015-04-24 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
If you want to practice, you want to get a form that is accessible for us. For
sure, you could play around with some of the IRS forms, even if you don’t want
to send in any taxes. Go to www.irs.gov and find
accessibility. One of the choices is pdf forms. To do the check boxes, you are
probably going to need to go using vo arrow keys. Using the tab key won’t get
you into check boxes. I made Greg aware of this, and he is going to work on
getting that corrected. In the meantime, just mess with it to find the check
boxes.

The Apple Watch app allows extensive configuration. This is just as well,
because it would be too onerous if done from the watch face. The effect is
also very pretty: once configured, it’s ready for you to use immediately.

My watch is at last configured, and free from the continued need to use the
iPhone. All that is required is to keep the two on the same Wi-Fi network.
Tomorrow I will explore the apps from the watch itself, in depth.

My first major comments and warnings to potential buyers are:

Reserve power mode is inaccessible. Hardly surprising, of course, but still a
disappointment.

Siri on the watch is apparently not exclusive from the phone; the contacts are
synced from your phone, so Siri must be on on your phone too. That means I
can’t use it, because I can’t leak contacts to Apple.

The wrist-raise detection is way too sensitive. I turned off announcements in
Accessibility settings. It doesn’t affect the display, but you can’t turn off
wrist detection completely without disrupting Apple Pay, so it’s as good as
it’s going to get.

The user guide is available here so you can get into all the details:

The user guide is linked from the Apple Watch app if you need it. It is

organising by threaded conversations on Mac

2015-04-24 Thread Daniel McGee
Hi all, for those who may use threaded conversation view on the mac, are there
any tips on how you would use it effectively?
For example, I can tell if a thread is unread but am unable to tell how many
messages are unread. Once, I've opened it.

Just really share with me how you would use this on the mac because I've sort
of gotten use to it on the iphone now and would like to try and do so on the
mac as well.

Using OS X Yosemite V10.10.3
Thanks in advance for any experiences you may share.

2015-04-24 Thread Donna Goodin
He's right, it is very easy to set up. Do most of it from your phone, but you
can also do stuff fairly easily from the watch. I haven't had much time
tonight, so mostly just focused on getting everything paired up, and doing some
tweaking of settings. Looking forward to putting it through its paces tomorrow.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: Wow!!!! apple watch is on its way.

2015-04-24 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries

This comes up every now and then.

Short answer is that the list is what folks make of it.

Long answer is that the name is probably a bit of an anachronisim at
this point. The list was founded years before iPhone OS became iOS and
then became accessible with VoiceOver. So as more and more folks became
iOS users the overlap with the existing Mac Voiceover users was an
obvious extension. Today we have another shift as folks embrace the
latest Apple gadget into the ecosystem and the marketplace of ideas
shifts into high gear. We'll find discussions of various scanners,
headsets and other devices folks hook up to their machine. A few even
venture Jaws questions as more Windows folks come over to the Mac but
bring their virtualized windows as a safety net as they come up to speed
on voiceover. In some ways the list is self selecting or self limiting.
If somebody dives to far into Windows land or goes too far down a rabbit
hole nobody will bother to answer and the thread just dies. So for me
it's all about Macs and their fun cousins that make the whole family
rich and interesting. Not sure we're there yet but Apple's push is for
the cloud, rather than the desktop, to be your digital hub. The
expectation is the desktop/laptop will fade over time such that
continuously connected devices will be our main means of consumption and
composition.

Re: Adware warning!

2015-04-24 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
Good to know. My parents just got fooled. They say that there was some
popup that said their flash was out of date and to download an updater.
Well, they went ahead and did that but it wasn't the real Flash updater.
So now every time they click a link it opens a new browser tab to some
other malware download stuff, pops up giant ads and other annoyances.
This included the obligatory "call this number for help" which they did
but at least they stopped before actually handing over their credit card
number. The tipoff to them was that the 'tech support company' wasn't
actually Apple. I think they had wanted $150 to 'fix' their machine.

From what I read, under the hood the malware actually uses some unix
tricks to attach itself to the browsers process (Safari, Chrome or
Firefox) and intercept all the requests so they can modify the links on
the fly. Pretty sneaky. From this Apple article it sounds like you can
sometimes wipe it out just by doing a major OS upgrade:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202225

They were on OSX 10.8 so I had them start downloading/installing 10.10
last night and it was still going earlier today. If that doesn't work
I'll run through the steps here to try and kill of the badness:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203987

They apparently got MacKeeper installed which is not a good thing. I
found this recent article talking about how Malware does it's thing on
OSX and that we're going to find more of it migrating from Windows:

http://www.howtogeek.com/210589/mac-os-x-isn’t-safe-anymore-the-crapware-malware-epidemic-has-begun/

I'll keep adwaremedic.com in mind if my other attempts fail. Thanks for
the timely info.

systems to protect any further damage.” The warning went on to give
this number:

888 553-4193
and directed me to give a number starting with Mac and ending with
several digits.

My BS detector was on full alert.
I called Apple and told them what was going on. I was informed that
this occurs several times a day at least, and that it usually involves
adware.
When a screen sharing session link was sent, Safari could not find the
server, nor could Google Chrome.
I was then told to open the MacBook in safe mode, and I thought I
could use VoiceOver in safe mode, but it would not come on, and
command F5 would not bring it up.
The tech support rep handed me over to someone who had more VoiceOver
experience. He had me shut down and restart normally, then sent me the
ability to screen share by using my apple ID, which made the screen
sharing like an application, which enabled me to go to adwaremedic.com
, download adware medic, and run it.
This problem appears to be resolved, but I wanted you all to be aware
of this incident, as well as to inquire: Isn’t there a way to use
VoiceOver in safe mode?
Thank you . . . and be careful out there. I was told people have been
known to give their credit card numbers to these people thinking they
are getting their computers fixed.

Re: office preview for mac, Reading by Word??

2015-04-24 Thread Sean Murphy
Hello,

There are many people on this list who have got it to work. What version are
you using? Make sure you are using the latest before bashing their first beta
release. It isn’t bug free but at least MS is stepping up to the plate to
address the accessibility issues.

The version Version 15.9.0 (150408) is what I have on my machine. I don’t have
the link at hand but it has been published multiple times on this list. Do a
search in the archives and I am sure you will find it.

Those who help themselves will be helped in turned.

Re: office preview for mac, Reading by Word??

2015-04-24 Thread Sean Murphy
There are some minor issues with navigation by word. That is if you have a word
with a punctuation at the end. VO reads it twice when moving by opt left or
right arrow. If the word is at the end of the line. VO will read out the word
twice and then the punctuation when using opt left or right arrow.

In print view mode, you cannot navigate between pages by using the up and down
arrow. You have to be in web or draft view modes.

Styles are not detected yet.

I cannot move by page either. Otherwise I have been successful in creating a
document that is a page in half for my purposes.

RE: organising by threaded conversations on Mac

2015-04-24 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Daniel,

The way I use OSX Mail, which does have VoiceOver state how many messages are
in the thread, is to use the Standard layout, as opposed to the Classic layout.
As I have never used the Classic layout, I don’t know if there is a way in
which to hear how many messages are in a thread. Classic layout users will
have to chime in on that.

I am, without a doubt, the number one fan of the Standard layout, with the
Preview Pane enabled.

In my never-to-be humble opinion, I think that it is the single best feature in
OSX in terms of processing hundreds and hundreds of emails in a matter of mere
moments.

Just so you know, the Standard layout of the Mail app in OSX is the default
layout. In my experience, I have found that over 95% of the Macs I come
across, owned by sighted users, adopt this configuration in the mail app. The
advantage to me is that I, being intimately comfortable with this layout, have
absolutely no problem in supporting them or in quickly moving to a new Mac, if
only temporarily.

Using the Standard layout, from the View menu, select Organize by Conversation,
then select Collapse all Conversations.

That should get you started.

Good Luck and Enjoy,

Mark

Subject: organising by threaded conversations on Mac

Hi all, for those who may use threaded conversation view on the mac, are there
any tips on how you would use it effectively?
For example, I can tell if a thread is unread but am unable to tell how many
messages are unread. Once, I've opened it.

Just really share with me how you would use this on the mac because I've sort
of gotten use to it on the iphone now and would like to try and do so on the
mac as well.

Using OS X Yosemite V10.10.3
Thanks in advance for any experiences you may share.

Daniel
