Re: Voice Dream Reader Prob. resolved. This may help others.

2015-04-03 Thread Mike Busboom
Hi, Mary,

I took the easy way out, though everything was done through the cloud. While
on a visit to the States, I bought my new iPhone. Since I needed a phone while
there, I went to an AT&T store, and one of the people there transferred
everything for me. I had a lot of stuff on my system, but the entire process
took no more than thirty minutes.

I must admit that I was very surprised to find all of my Voice Dream Reader
books in the library. This was not the case with books I had downloaded using
Read2Go.

I am very sorry that I can’t be more helpful.

Take care, Mary, and by the way, it’s good hearing from you,

Mike

NAS questions

2015-04-03 Thread jeffrey greene
Hi, Ok first sorry for the long post! I’ve had bad luck with external hard
drives. My 3.5 year old lacie 4tb thunderbolt is making strange noises.
Figures, its 6 months out of warranty. So, I was considering getting a NAS
drive. So here are my questions:
1 which brands do you guys recommend?
2 which brand is easiest to setup using VO on the mac?
3 some NAS drives advertize personal cloud functions. Is this important?
4 What capacity do you think I should get? I heard something a long time ago
that for example an 8tb nas doesn’t have the full 8tb available.
Thanks, Jeff

Re: menu tab

2015-04-03 Thread David Taylor
Hi,

When discussing MenuTab, please remember that all it does is show you the FB
website, and that it can show you either version, so please specify which
layout you mean, and try not to blame MenuTab for things that are FB’s fault.
For instance, since I upgraded to Yosemite, on the main site, most stories say
just middle dot instead of the person’s name. Does anybody have any idea how to
fix this please?

Cheers
Dave

Hi Ted,

Go to voiceover utility (Vo+f8) and travel down to the commanders
category. Head to the quick nav tab and make sure the checkbox that says
"enable single-key navigation" is checked.

look for ONYX. download that, run it. I would suggest configuring it first

Re: NAS questions

2015-04-03 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
I don't know about the NAS part but weird noises isn't always a for sure
indicator. My old Mac tower has three hard drives in it and they have
made all kinds of weird noises but they keep on going. Depending on your
enclosure, it could just be the fan. For internal drives you can check
the SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) status of
your drive to find out if it thinks it's about to die either in terminal:

diskutil info disk0 | grep SMART

which should say "Verified". You can get that same info from Disk
Utility sometimes after selecting a drive (not the volume within a
drive) and then navigate to the bottom of the window where it has all
the info like name and capacity. I say sometimes because sometimes it's
there and sometimes not. The terminal command always seems to work.

That said, external drives don't seem to work with this but there are
tools you can install to do this such as Smart Monitoring Tools although
not all enclosures support this:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/smartmontools/

More info about SMART is here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.

Checking on this has saved my bacon more than once.

Hi Chris, Its not just the noise, when I do a copy from my mac's drive

Skype for mac

2015-04-03 Thread Pamela Francis
Hello folks,
I have an interesting dilemma.
Was attempting to access my skype program from my doc as I had placed it there
when I installed it.
As it wouldn't open, I was curious as to why. Looked in my applications folder,
not there.
I went to the Mac App Store, could not find my Skype program there either. Has
it been taken out of the Mac App Store? If not, can someone please send me a
link. Would greatly appreciate it.

2015-04-03 Thread Matthew Dierckens
Hi Pam,
I wonder if you didn't copy the app file into your applications folder from the
Skype disk image?
You can go to www.skye.com and download the disk image, copy the Skype.app
file, and ten paste it to the applications folder.

God bless.

Bible App Project

2015-04-03 Thread Barry Hadder
Hello everyone.

Due to past and recent posts on the subject, I’ve been recently inspired to
start a desktop bible project for the Mac. I’ve even found a suitable data set
to use. However, I happened to run across the sight of the company that owns
the rights to the Scourby narration and it appears that they all ready have
something in the works. It is at http://scourby.com . It
appears that they already have an IOS version that is usable with Voiceover. I
personally own the CD set and I can say that Scourby’s narration is amazing.

I would like to hear any feedback in regards to whether or not there is any
need for pursuing such a project. If their approach isn’t what people hear
are looking for etc. If not, then what are people looking for in a Bible app?
It certainly wouldn’t be practical for me to incorporate Scourby’s narration
into an app as they own the rights and even if I got permission, they could
revoke it any time they so choosed.
Thanks.

text attributes in Preview

2015-04-03 Thread Jenine Stanley
I am trying to see the text attributes in a file in Preview. The file is a PDF
and when I use the text attribute command, VO-t, I hear nothing. this command
seems to work just about everywhere else.

So, could this be the PDF, Preview or VO?

I need to see a line of bolded text in an answer key for a quiz.

Thanks!

Playlists not syncing properly

2015-04-03 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

My playlist don't seem to be syncing properly between my Mac and my iPhone. On
my iPhone I have two copies of each playlist, and recent modifications that I
have made to my playlist do not seem to be sinking from my Mac to my phone. I
have the latest version of iTunes. Does anyone know what's up? Any solutions?
Thanks,

Filling out forms with PDf Pen Pro

2015-04-03 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi guys
I just filled out an IRS form 941 with PDF Pen Pro, version 7.1 and I want to
tell you guys about it. We can do it now because the checkboxes work, not
exactly like in Windows, but you can get there.

I found the first one did not come up when I pressed the tab key, so I had to
read with VO arrow keys to find it, so it pays to read the form first before
doing it. In my case, I knew the form fairly well because I used to handle
employment tax questions. If I had not had that experience, however, I could
have done it ok if I had read through the form first. So now I am considering
firing my payroll company. I had a bad moment when the IRS web site said 2014
on the place for the form, but the form says 2015. At least on the IRS forms
you can get the braille copies, too.

It never was in the Mac App Store. You download it from Skype's website

you will then download it as either a disk image (DMG), a single app

Re: weather aps for the mac?

On my widget there are only three things I can interact with. First is a
link which says the current weather. If I VO-right I land on a 6-day
forecast group which I can interact with to inspect the individual days.
Last is an Info Button which is where I can change the locale for the
weather. If I action the current weather link it takes me to Safari and
loads up some Yahoo weather page.

As far as I know, that is true. I will tell you that it works faster but it
doesn't windows. It calls up that file almost immediately and doesn't take
forever while it tags the thing or whatever it doesn't windows. Also, if you
get the pro version, one of the things you can do is to convert your PDF files
to text or Word files or Excel files. I have done this.

Re: Filling out forms with PDf Pen Pro

2015-04-03 Thread Chris Moore
Hi Mary,
Reading tables in a pdf file is a big deal for me as well. I don’t know of a
solution on the Mac as yet. Adobe reader on Windows with NVDA does a
reasonably good job with this. An accessible version of Adobe on the mac would
be quite helpful.

The other approach I’ve thought of is to convert the pdf file to html which
would hopefully preserve the tables and links. Safari should be able to handle
such an html rendering.

Hello Mary
Maybe I am wrong, but Adobe doesn't seem to be very committed in getting this
done for us. At least the PDF pen pro people are willing to do it. That says a
lot.
When I get a chance, I will take one of my numbers files and convert them to a
table or something. But I can see if it works. With the pro version, you can
convert files to excel. I can see how well that works if that would be any
benefit to you.

Problems with a word document with tables

2015-04-03 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Listers,

I need your experienced help. I am doing a course and one of the ways I am
being tested is my tutor sending to all the students a Word documents which has
tables. The document is formatted as a word document. It has a number of
questions and related conditions to it in some kind of a text box and then a
table into which I have to type in "yes, no, or maybe" answers. I opened it in
Pages, and I could access the table into which to write the "yes, no, maybe"
answers, but there was no way of knowing which row corresponded to which
question/condition in the textbox. It was a mess with voiceover and it took me
two hours to work out what was what. I tried to convert it into rtf to see
whether I can read all the relevant bits of the assignment but I couldn't since
rtf reported the table as embedded file. I converted it into text but much of
the content of the file was missing. I finally converted it to pdf and I was
able to read the questions/conditions text box but of course I couldn't write
the answers into the table provided because the table wasn't reported and
anyway you cant write new content in preview. I then attempted Ms Word in
Windows 7 in my virtual machine but that wasn't much help because I couldn't
read the textbox with the all relevant questions/conditions.

So my question to you is, is there a way of confidently reading textboxes and
their content in Pages or in any other way? I reported the difficulties to my
tutor and he said he would try and send the assignments like this to me in an
editable pdf form but I don't think I can actually access and edit any editable
pdfs with voiceover. Is there a way around it/ This time, I managed to submit
my assignment after hours of trying but I don't fancy doing it every time.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Andrew

Hi all. I am wondering if there are any good weather programs for the mac
that will give detailed information? I have the stock weather widget, but
it is only giving a little info for one day.

Thanks all

Is there a way to force a playlist to sync to your iPhone?

2015-04-03 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

So in an attempt to force the newer version of one of my playlists to sync to
my phone, I deleted it from my phone. I've since synced my phone to my Mac in
iTunes, but no joy with the playlist. Is there some way to force it to copy to
my phone?
Thanks,

Hello Andrew
I use pages all the time with Microsoft Word documents that I've converted. If
this file is not sensitive, I would be willing to take a look at the blank file
and see if I can figure out something. If you would like contact me off list
and I will see what I can do.

I will be most interested to see what you may discover about PDF pen and table
reading. PDFs are one of the things I still do on windows if it involves
anything other than strict reading of the text. For that, VoiceStream is good.

I don't really know because I never had the version that was not the pro
version. You may want to contact the developer and find out.

Re: Filling out forms with PDf Pen Pro

2015-04-03 Thread Tree Mabry

Hey everyone, I wanted to make a few points.

First of all, Adobe claims that it is about to come out with the first ever
mac app that will give voice over users full access to tagged pdfs. You can
read more about it at the following link.

https://blogs.adobe.com/accessibility/2015/03/acrobat-dc-accessibility-update.html

The update will be out in less then thirty days.

Secondly, while it is true that PDF pin is the most accessible way to fill
out forms on the mac, it is not true that it is the only way. It is
possible for voice over users to use the current adobe reader mac app to
fill out forms. I gave a detailed description of how to do this on an apple
vis form post, hear is the link.

http://www.applevis.com/forum/os-x-mac-app-discussion/how-fill-out-pdf-forms-adobe-reader-mac

I also posted about the adobe update on apple vis last week, but that post
did not seem to get much attention.

Thirdly dealing with pdfs with tables. The previous poster is right that
the best option on the mac is to convert the pdf file to an html file. You
can then read the html file in Safari, just as you would read a web page. I
have done this hundreds of times for school stuff. There are several ways
to convert the file, but I have found that the best way is with abby fine
reader pro for the mac. Whats great about this option is that it will also
often create accessible headings which are great.

If anyone has any questions about pdf's on the mac I can probably give some
helpful info. hopefully the state of accessible pdf on the mac will b
radically different in less then thirty days when the Adobe update comes
out. Of course we don't know for sure if the app will be as accessible as
they claim, but if it is it will be a game changer for the mac. Perhaps one
of the most important accessibility improvements ever on OSX.
