Re: Facebook for I O S: Is anyone else seeing this same issue?

Hi,
I don’t have any issues with flicking around in Facebook latest version other
than the known bug that when Facebook updates you get kicked out of the
timeline and into one of the buttons or tabs and you have to get back into the
messages list again.

Re: Copying the contents of a pdf file into textedit

2015-04-01 Thread Maria and Joe Chapman
HI.

with mavericks at least I am able to open a pdf file in preview, press command
a and then command c to copy it to the paste board.

Not sure if this can still be done in Yosemite.

Video isn't going to happen, Audacity is audio only. You could use iMovie
or another app for adding the finished audio track to a video project.

To do what you're wanting, just open Audacity; it will have a new project
open automatically. Hit cmd-comma, choose the Devices item from the table,
and interact with the scroll area, then review the items to be sure your
audio input is set how you want. Stop interacting twice, find the OK
 button, and press it.

Now, use R to record. Space will stop recording, and P will pause or
resume recording without stopping completely. Once you have the
instrumental track, and have pressed space to stop it, repeat the process
for vocals, and any other layers you want.

Use up and down arrows to move through your different tracks. Vo-shift-m
will open a context menu, from where you can rename, move, and otherwise
 adjust each track.

From the dropbox web interface, we can recover those files, but here’s a
question. I do see all the files that were deleted from the folder in question.
Everything from the last month is there, so that’s beautiful. Problem is: I
don’t know how to undelete these files, nor how to mark them for undelete and
then restore them in one go. I know that dropbox allows us to undelete files
and folders right from its own web interface, which is what I need right now,
but what do I click to achieve it? I can navigate to the dropbox folder in
question using the dropbox web interface, and next to each file I want back, it
says deleted audio, or deleted video. But clicking that does not bring the file
back. If you know how to do this with VoiceOver, please let me know.

Regards,
Paul.

Re: Voice Dream Reader - Bug in latest Version?

2015-04-01 Thread Mike Busboom
Hello Alex,

I am wondering if you perhaps made a mistake when you gave me the email address
for Voice Dream Reader support. When I attempted to send them a note, my note
was returned to me and I was told that no such address existed.

Would it be possible for you to recheck the address you gave me? I also
searched for the company on the Internet, but all I could find were reviews
about the product, but not the contact info for the company. I must be either
incredibly inept or just having an unlucky day.

Sorry for the trouble, but thanks in advance,

Mike

Re: VoiceOver very sluggish when changing languages

2015-04-01 Thread Mike Busboom
Thanks to everyone who has attempted to assist me with this problem.

I am reluctant to buy new voices, especially since I am very satisfied with
what I already have. If, for example, I bought voices from AssistiveWare,
would I lose voices I already have on the system? I’d hate to lose Alex.

Thanks to everyone for their input,

Mike

Hello Mike and all.
You wil not lose any voices that you have on the mac, if you buy from
assistiveware they will just be added to the voiceover utility. You can try out
the demo of each voice for 30 days, and then make your decision to purchase the
voice.
HTH.

Re: Logos Bible Software

2015-04-01 Thread Emilio
Hello everyone,

While these Bible sites are fine, they all are completely reliant on the
Internet, which is something I do not want to be completely tethered to.
I am interested in a program that will allow me to download the content, so
I may have access to information without needing to connect to the
Internet. This would prove especially useful when I am in areas where
Internet access is not available. Contrary to modern first-world belief,
the Internet is not ubiquitous.
It is a shame however, that Logos is not voiceover accessible because this
software package seems ideal for edification.

Cheers.

It definitely is shame that this is not accessible on the mac because I know at

Re: Sharing videos, making them smaller

2015-04-01 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries

Handbrake is free and can be downloaded from here:

https://handbrake.fr

That said, video is just very large. A typical DVD has around 4-9GB of
video data, and that's compressed from the source. Even if you compress
a video really hard it's probably not going to get below the 10MB cap
most email providers put on attachments.

The math works out this way. Say your video is 640x480 pixels, the
lowest common resolution today known as Standard Definition or SD.
Variations of HD (like modern iPhones record) go up to 1920x1080. If we
stick with our 640x480 example that's 300K of data. Colors are
represented by three bytes for red green and blue so it's 900K per
frame. Most video runs 30 frames per second so that's 26MB of
uncompressed data per second of video at SD size. So even if you
compress it really hard to 1% of the original size you're at 270K per
second or about 16MB a minute. I was poking around on the Netflix site
and for SD they want 3Mb per second or about 300KB a second which
matches pretty well with my maths above.

Anyway, it sounds like your 98MB video file is on the reasonably small
side so I wouldn't expect it to get much smaller.

new macbook user making the trancision from windows

2015-04-01 Thread ted phillips
Hi all. My name is Ted Phillips and I am a very recent Mac convert. I just
got a new macbook pro running yocemity and one of my chief uses for the macbook
is to record music using logic Pro X. I do have a couple of questions that
concern me a little though.
First, How do I get voiceover to run automatically at logon? I can’t seem to
get it to work. Second, there seems to be some up and down auto-gain with the
volume using voice-over especially when going to different programs. It only
happens on the internal speakers but it is noticeable. Does that mean there is
a problem with my macbook? Thanks all and I hope you all don’t mind me
learning from you.

Hi Paul,

I'm not sure whether it's going to work because I've not been in this
situation. However, if you press vo+shift+m to get contextual menu, would
there be an option there to undelete the file? It's worth checking this

Open System Preferences and choose the Users and Groups button. Just past the
toolbar is a list of users; down arrow on that list until you hear "Login
Options". VO-right until you find the "Use VoiceOver on the logon screen" and
check it (you may have to activate the "Lock" button at the end of the window
first).

I doubt it, but given that your machine is still new, it's worth heading to an
Apple Store to get it checked out. I've never noticed this problem, and I can't
think of anything that would cause it. Unless your hands are covering the
speakers somehow? They are near the keyboard on some models.
> Thanks all and I hope you all don’t mind me learning from you.
Of course, that's why we're here. :) Ask away, and don't forget to check out
www.applevis.com for tons more resources, including a page just for VoiceOver
users new to the Mac.

Re: Copying the contents of a pdf file into textedit

2015-04-01 Thread Barry Hadder
Hi,

Sounds like you haven't added to your work flow. To add an action to a
workflow, select it with up or down arrows and press enter. You can then
interact with the workflow area and then interact with the action.
When you interact with that action, there are radio buttons to choose the
output format.

So, I must buy a new Scanner. Do you have any suggestion for a small, not to

Re: new macbook user making the trancision from windows

2015-04-01 Thread Pamela Francis
Hello and welcome,
First let me say this group is invaluable. Second, I would advise initially for
you to almost totally concentrate on using your Mac for whatever you normally
would have used windows for. None of us here our windows bashers, we all
respect the fact that it has its place. However the platforms are very
different. The learning curve is definitely there.
At least with your Mac, it's easier to fix on your own if you should happen to
mess up a setting, or become skittish than would be if you were in windows.
Dive into it, use it, ask away. We have all been there. In addition to
applevis.com you might also want to check out maccessibility.com they too have
very informative podcasts.
Any of us will also do what we can to help you.

Automator is one of the coolest apps ever in that you can interactively build
things with it without any programming experience in most cases. Very
classically Apple. Oddly enough however, I don’t think they originally
developed it. I recall hearing somewhere that they acquired it some time in
the distant past.

I’m looking in to creating an action that will open the current pdf page in
textedit. I think that is what we really need and I haven’t seen anything
currently available that fits the bill. So you see, you can also create your
own actions although that is fairly advanced.

Hi!
I actually created an app in Automator, that when opened, it prompts you for
the files you want to transform into RTF, and it just does it. I will try to
write about how it is done, but I got the info in Google some time ago, so if
you look for it, there might be a blog or something with the recipe. I could
also share the little app I made if you want. How ever, it will be an
unidentified appear apple, so you will need to open it with the context menu
instead of just with the regular Open command.
Cheers!

2015-04-01 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello Gabriel,

I just looked and saw a few of your scanner’s range supported. However, that is
official support. That does not mean that it won’t work. It depends upon your
choice. Do you want to fiddle about or just go out and buy a new scanner. A lot
of drivers support several models but I couldn’t get info on those in the Slim
range. I could find anything for my Epson but I plugged it in and it worked
straight away.

I could not find any complaints that someone couldn’t get that model working on
a Mac either. If that scanner has been around for a while, I’m sure someone has
tried it.

Good luck.

Re: Copying the contents of a pdf file into textedit

I’ve successfully created a PDF to Text service for finder, but I can’t find
where Automator stores the saved service. I want to remove it from the finder
context menu. Do you know where services are stored and is it just a matter of
deleting it from wherever it is in order to remove it from the system?

You can find it in ~/Library/Services.
I’m sure you can just delete it. You might need to close and reopen system
prefs if it’s open.

Dlink Modem router

2015-04-01 Thread Agent086b
Hi all,
after 8 years I need to purchase a new modem router. I am looking for a duel
band. I am looking at a Dlink 2890al. this number may not be the same in all
countries as I believe Dlink market there products differently around the
world. I was not a fan of Dlink years ago but I understand they have lifted
there game. Can anybody tell me if the web interface is accessible using
Safari? I am also interested in opinions on this router. I have been using a
Billion up to now. I have been reading reviews that say they are not as good as
they used to be.
Thanks for any help.
Max.

Not sure what the cost difference is but the DLink DIR-628 I had was
nothing but trouble. Couldn't get my devices to stay connected. I
finally spent a lot more and got an Apple Airport and all the problems
went away. It just works. If it were me I would get a simple DSL to
Ethernet router and the connect that to an Airport for all the Wifi stuff.

Re: Dlink Modem router

2015-04-01 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
Wow, had to dig a bit to figure that out and I purchased it March 2010.
Hard to believe it was that long ago. I probably fiddled with it on and
off for a year. I had an older 802.11b wifi router I wanted to upgrade
to 802.11n so this seemed like just the thing. Eventually I reverted
back to the old unit and saved up for something else. I ordered the
Airport Feb 2012 after realizing I had pretty much flushed money down
the drain on the DLink. I really didn't have time to sit on hold with
tech support and diagnose an intermittent issue. The DLink was, at the
time, about US$75 and the Apple Airport Extreme was US$165 so maybe I
was expecting too much from such a cheap unit, but I guess I'm getting
less tolerant of basic commodity technology that doesn't work reliably.

Re: Dlink Modem router

2015-04-01 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
Not sure it matters anymore as that was over five years ago now. Maybe
someone else on the list has more current info on dlink accessibility.
If you didn't need the ADSL interface, for the cost an Airport would be
quite nice. Maybe a simple DSL to Ethernet box like this one for US$34:

Hi,
the one I am looking at is $300.00 aud., about top of there range I think. Was
the web interface accessible at that time?
Yours was about the time when Dlink had a bad name here.
Thanks again.

Wow, had to dig a bit to figure that out and I purchased it March 2010. Hard to
believe it was that long ago. I probably fiddled with it on and off for a year.
I had an older 802.11b wifi router I wanted to upgrade to 802.11n so this
seemed like just the thing. Eventually I reverted back to the old unit and
saved up for something else. I ordered the Airport Feb 2012 after realizing I
had pretty much flushed money down the drain on the DLink. I really didn't have
time to sit on hold with tech support and diagnose an intermittent issue. The
DLink was, at the time, about US$75 and the Apple Airport Extreme was US$165 so
maybe I was expecting too much from such a cheap unit, but I guess I'm getting
less tolerant of basic commodity technology that doesn't work reliably.

Thanks,
I would like to do that but I can not find a DSL to ethernet modem here. Could
you tell me how long ago you had your Dlink?

Not sure what the cost difference is but the DLink DIR-628 I had was nothing
but trouble. Couldn't get my devices to stay connected. I finally spent a lot
more and got an Apple Airport and all the problems went away. It just works. If
it were me I would get a simple DSL to Ethernet router and the connect that to
an Airport for all the Wifi stuff.

Hi all,
after 8 years I need to purchase a new modem router.
Max.
