Re: Audio Highjack 3 Rocks with Voiceover!

2015-02-12 Thread Gabriele Battaglia

Hi all.
Jonathan, I wasn't able to understand where Audio Highjack 3 has the
settings to split audio in two different channels while recording a
phone conversation?

Is it something hidden in the code or customizable?

Thanks.
Gabriel.

Re: quality of osx with voiceover for people with dissablities

2015-02-12 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Way to go. Let it all out! :)

And to others: send Apple your feedback! Those bugs will not fix themselves,
you know—Apple have to know about them first.

Tomorrow is Friday. Shall we start a report-an-accessibility-bug-Friday
tradition?

Now, for my feelings on the matter: I would argue that iOS is increasingly not
seeing the accessibility love that it requires, either. People are using it
now purely for lack of choice. For OS X, while there may be indeed be choice,
it appears to be between technical superiority and accessibility, and neither
is appropriate to have on its own. I’m still in the Mac for now, but I think
mostly because I appreciate the platform better—when even basic functionality
stops working, or I lack the time to work around VoiceOver bugs, I will simply
have to quit and make do with an inferior platform solely for its efficiency.
I really, really don’t want to have to do this. FWIW, I still believe OS X as
an ecosystem is the best there is for the lowest cost—sorry Windows apologists,
but NVDA is no match for a commercial screen reader yet, IMO.

For my favourite bugs: no indentation indicator, broken navigation of text by
line on the web, losing position in HTML and/or text areas. These all have
efficiency-killing properties.

The check boxes are in TextEdit preferences, under the “New document” tab. They
should apply with newly-opened documents after you’ve unchecked them.

How do I get a word count in Pages?

Hello, list members,

I need to get the word count on a document I am writing using the latest

not finding what I am looking for. Has anyone written a script for this? It

Isn’t there a setting where I don’t need to do this anymore?

Re: Reading a PDF in Preview

typically I find that i have to interact twice in the scroll area to get at the
text. Once there I can use the VO reading commands like VO + arrow keys, or VO
+ function + command down / up for sentence and VO + function + shift +
up/down arrow for paragraph.
This pertains to files I open from the finder, and not from within the mail
program, but I don’t think that should matter much.

Hello Jamie,

To get the number of words, characters, paragraphs, etc in Pages, just go to
the View menu and down to Show Word Count. It appears as a menu button and
pressing VO-Space on it will give you the other options.

Re: How do I get a word count in Pages?

2015-02-12 Thread Jamie Pauls
Hi, Anne,

I see the Show Word count option, but it is not a button. Pressing it simply
changes the menu item to Hide Word Count. I managed to see the word count a
couple times while looking around in the document layout area, but I can’t
reliably find the info. Sadly, TextEdit isn’t quite the word processor I need
and Pages seems a bit more frustrating to me that it’s worth. I’ll keep
plugging away, though. Thanks.

Take care and have a great day.

I got a Mac in the days of Lion, and quickly switched to the Vocalizer

favored Ava, and she is still among the best voices I know of, except a
couple from Ivona. In testing things for Yosemite, I kept switching from
Ava to Alex, just to see if any problems were being caused by the use of
Nuance voices. I accidentally made a startling discovery: Alex used to be
pretty bad a few years ago, but now, he's quite good. I've always liked
the breathing thing, but Alex would constantly run words together,
mispronounce syllables, and have other small problems that made him hard
to understand, especially at higher speeds. The more I use him in
Yosemite, though, the more I look for reasons to switch back to Ava, but
the more those reasons allude me. Ava misses the period after certain
words, like "app", Alex doesn't; Ava says "capital" before uppercase
letters, although that setting is disabled, and Alex doesn't; VoiceOver
has delays when opening the VO Utility or bringing up VO menus while using
Nuance voices, but with Alex, I find no such delays; and more.

So, is it just me, or has Alex gotten way better? I don't mean "better" in
that VoiceOver runs faster while using Alex, although it certainly does. I
mean "better" in that, compared to a few years ago, he's far clearer when
speaking and makes far fewer mistakes. Maybe I'm misremembering, or maybe
I'm the only one to notice, since the change was likely gradual and thus
invisible to those who have used Alex all along. Either way, I'm
interested in hearing your thoughts, and I'm more eager than ever to
obtain a 64-bit iPhone so I can start using Alex there as well. My only
complaint about Alex is that he doesn't speed up very well - sure, he can
go crazy fast, but I find I miss things at more than 70% speaking rate.
Anyway, what do you all think? If you haven't used Alex in a long time,
give him another chance. If you use him all the time, have you noticed
 anything?

I do use Alex on my i-devices though I also use Karen and Daniel and
occasionally Samantha. I still don't really like Alex on the Mac but would
rather use Karen or from the infovox voices Ryan or Heather or sometimes Will.
Voices are such a matter of individual preference.

Re: How do I get a word count in Pages?

2015-02-12 Thread Jamie Pauls
Hi, Anne and all,

After closing Pages and relaunching, I am now able to see the word count plain
as day. Before, I was looking at a Word document that I had brought into Pages,
and I was seeing a lot of information that appeared very graphical in nature.
Something about rectangles and placeholders. Not sure what was going on there,
but after relaunching Pages, I can easily find the word count in a practice
document I created plus the original Word file I was playing with. Just thought
I’d better write back and let you know that I was having better luck than when
I last spoke. Thanks for the help.

Take care and have a great day.

According to my sighted sister, you simply click the desired recipe one time to
open it. My impression is that Paprika is good about feedback, so email them

I agree about the Braille. I have not used my Braille display very much with
the Mac because of what William says in his message. I thought by now as the
Mac Operating Systems matured and developed, we'd have better Braille support.
May be Freedom Scientific best give them a hand since they may go bust if GW
Micro and Microsoft become more compatible as all Jaws users may switch to
Windoweyes as well as all the organisations to have Freedom Scientific in their
pockets. Sorry Jonathan, I know you are a fan of the Podcast!

 Hello,

I am writing to you since the progress of the accessibility features are

The mac is still missing some important features against windows with a

 built-in screenreader.
Ok, voiceover is still a free, built-in screenreader but on windows ,
there are 2 free screenreader for the windows platform that are better in
 some cases than voiceover.

Braille is still very basicnin osx:
Some daily problems I discover with voiceover:
I can’t follow courses with only braille output (without speech) during
 colleges.
I mean: there is some important information missing on the braille display
 that’s only available with speech.

 What is missing:

 further braille bugs:
cursor routing on the first sign of the braille-display: the text on the
 display is gone;
when composing a message to multiple recipients , while the speech is
saying correctly the contact that has the focus, the braille display isn’t
 following.

>> Further:

Some bugs since 10.9 aren’t fixed:
the icons in the statusbar like the third party app dropbox can’t be
 accessed with voiceover from there.
The drag and drop-function with voiceover is not improved since the
introduction in osx 10.7 and gives not the same possibilities for blind
 users as for sighted users.
The button to mount all external (network)-stations at once in finder is
 not accessible with voiceover;

 And some different points:
Ibooks was basically accessible with voiceover after one update from osx
 10.9 to osx 10.10.

iWork’s is mainly accessible but is still missing some important
compatibility options to work together with ms office.
(most of the people that work in a administrative job, use windows with ms

Can I change the speed of a recording with Amadeus Pro?

2015-02-12 Thread Agent086b
Hi all,
I have an old tape that I think was recorded at 1.78 inches per second. I have
just obtained a real to real recorder that will only run at 3.3/4 or 7.5 inches
per second. Can I slow the speed with Amadeus by half so I can hear the
original recording? The original tape was recorded 45 years ago and is very
important to my wife and I.
Thanks again for any advice.
Max.

Hi,

If it’s a genre that you’ve entered yourself, once you eliminate all instances
of that genre within your iTunes database, it will no longer appear. If it is
one of the default ones that iTunes generates themselves, then I’ve never
tried, but I don’t believe that there is a way to delete them.

Re: integrated programming environment

2015-02-12 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello,

Have you looked at textedit on your Mac? I see in the preferences an option to
display html code. I should imagine it will be very much like gedit. It’s been
some years since I looked at Gnome.

I’ve used emacs within a console. It’s just about useable. I haven’t tried vi
for working on code. I think most of these were installed via Mac Ports but
nano is on by default.

VoiceOver is not great in the console and as you are used to working in Gnome I
guess you prefer a GUI. But the languages you suggested are typically very text
orientated.

Did you use orca to access GEdit ? I would checkout the macports project or
brew if you like ruby. But I don’t think there is any mileage in trying to run
Gnome on the Mac.

Re: quality of osx with voiceover for people with dissablities

2015-02-12 Thread Barry Hadder
Well, as I don’t use braille, I will not comment to much on that except just
to say that I think it’s a little odd to seemingly not egknolege the
significance of an off the shelf system with braille support out of the box and
not find away to make good use of it.
With that said, there are some problems with some of your assertions that I
feel need to be addrest since nobody else has done so yet. I Also should point
out that it is unclear to me at times whether or not your points are in
reference to braille or speech. So, there may be some occasional
misunderstanding on my part.

1. Third party icons on the status bar are accessible with Voiceover.
Specifically the Dropbox app. Any problems that may occur will be more to due
with the third party developer rather than Apple. I don’t understand why you
said they can’t be accessed with Voiceover.
2. The idea that there should be some kind of constant indicator that quicknav
is turned on is your opinion. It is not an accessibility issue. This could be
classified as a feature request however.
3. What do you mean by network stations? I have no idea what button in finder
that you are referring to that connects to all available network shares at
once. I know of no such button nor have I found any reference to this function
in the help documentation. Finding and connecting to network shares in finder
is quite easy to do with voiceover and if you want OS X to automatically
connect to shares on your network, you can easily set this up in user
preferences. So, I see no accessibility issue here. It’s possible however
that I’m not understanding what you are referring to, but in any event I fail
to see how this one thing could impact the usability of OS X for blind people
to the extent that one would email Tim Cook.
4. Your subject is quality of osx with voiceover for people with dissablities.
However, I don’t see how iWork compatibility with MS office has anything to do
spasifically with blind people being able to use OS X.
5. With regard to manipulating the mouse with vo, there are some valid
concerns that need to be addressed, but emailing Tim Cook is not the correct
way to do that. I think it should also be said that flooding Apple with
invalid complaints will increase the risk that the valid ones will go unnoticed
or be ignored.

Finally, it’s good to hope for and expect new innovations including ones for
disabilities, but it is also necessary to egknolege what has been done which I
think is considerable and to be willing to make good use of what we have.

in fact you can. I just listened to Jonathan Mosen’s excellent AmadeusPro
tutorial where he demonstrates just such a technique. He had some very old
cassette tapes that were recorded at half speed, and he showed how he ws able

to a file.

I highly recommend getting his tutorial. For the price you’ll learn much about
AP including this technique.
Maybe Jonathan will chime in here with a more definitive and authoritative
answer, but your need sounds exactly like what he demonstrated in his tutorial.

Re: quality of osx with voiceover for people with dissablities

2015-02-12 Thread David Griffith
I too must confess that I am not a braille user on the Mac so cannot comment on
how frustrating this is. however there do seem to be a lot of people using
Braille happily on the MacVisionaries list so perhaps there is some expertise
you can tap into there to get support. Apart from that I agree with all
Barry has said. I also agree that there are areas that the experience on the
Mac can improve but equally I could compile a much longer list of complaints /
disappointments with Windows and the various Screenreaders and Windows OS
problems. . . Only today I was experiencing the frustration of Jaw’s inability
to accurately copy and paste text to and from ,html content. This is a long
standing annoyance at what should be a basic function which has existed for me
since Jaws 14 and shows no sign of being resolved in 16.
I can work around it by using NVDA but this and other deficiencies definitely
exist on Windows. I still prefer the Mac overwhelmingly for many functions,
including web browsing.
The Mac also provides for free a voice dictation and command interface which
forme personally outperforms anything I have bought on the Windows
platform, including Dragon Naturally Speaking.

I agree that there is a problem with the implementation of advance Office
support on the Mac. However this is to a large extent about the lack of depth
in the compilation of strategies compared to the information, tutorials and
guides available on the Windows side. Apple has relatively little interest in
promoting Microsoft Office and will pay lip service only to supporting this
format in many cases. This is understandable given the competing nature of
their suites.
Hopefully there is a lot to look forward to when the allegedly fully Voiceover
accessible version of Microsoft Office is released later this year.

I am in the fortunate position of having access to Mac and Windows. For some
things only Windows will do. For example Safari seems to fall over with my bank
web site. Equally there are things I will always if given a preference will do
on the Mac side. In general for me as long as it works, I prefer doing things
on the Mac now.

However I want to advance my capability on all platforms. I try to learn as
much as I can about not just Windows and Mac OS, but also iOS and Android.
Unfortunately I have never been able to get a Linux/vinux environment working
properly otherwise I would be delving into that as well. Some might see this
as a geeky approach but my view in the struggle to overcome visual impairment
we should, if we can afford it, utilise every useful option open to us.

In the spectrum of options available I think both MacOs and iOS have defensible
and honourable records.

how to play midi files?

2015-02-12 Thread Vivianna
hi all.
i am trying to play simple midi files on my mac air, running the latest
yosemite and, i have absolutely no idea how to do it?
when i activate the button on the website to start the midi, it opens up
garageBand. i don’t know where to go or what to do from there. i do not see
the name of the file, any play or start or some such.
is it necessary for me to learn garageBand to play these files or, is there
another way to play them?
and, if i do need to use garageBand, is there any super simple, really really
easy beginner tutorial or podcast somewhere?
thanks much.

Some External Hard Drive Questions

2015-02-12 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hey all. Today I bought an external hard drive because of that freak accident
with my Mac a few weeks ago. So I got a few questions about it.

1. I want to do a time machine backup of my entire HD. However, I have a whole
bunch of youtube videos I copied onto another system other than my Mac. Can I
copy over those videos onto the external drive without partitioning it?

2. If I have to partition the drive, how would I go about doing that?
Thanks in advance.

from my limited experience with this sort of thing I don’t think you’d have to
partition your external hard drive but you might need to reformat it before you
start putting stuff on it if it doesn’t work for multiple operating systems.

Re: Giving an app permission

2015-02-12 Thread Colin Matthews
Hi!
If you do not wish to allow every app from anywhere to open!
Another option find that app in your app’s [on finder Command+shift+a]
Then use VO+shift+m and open the app from there and you should be given the
option to always allow that one app!

Re: WhisperSync for Voice.

2015-02-12 Thread Myrna Votta
Hi,

WhisperSync refers to the Audible version of the book. So, if you purchase a
Kindle eBook, and then you choose to purchase what they are calling
“WhisperSync,” you would be purchasing the Audible version of the book. What
you then have is an audio book, read by a human narrator, in the Audible
format. You can play the Audible version in the Audible app on an I Device, or
if you have an audiobook player, such as the Victor Reader Stream, the book can
be played on such a player. If you have a Kindle, there is a built-in Audible
app on it, as well.

Re: how to play midi files?

2015-02-12 Thread Tyler Thompson
You should be able to play a midi file using iTunes. It’ll just use the built
in instruments on OS X so it’s not going to sound great. It seems like you’re

Re: Reading a PDF in Preview

2015-02-12 Thread Angus MacKinnon
Phil

I have tried everything and get nowhere. In OS 10.9.5’s Mail; I get an email
with a PDF attachment. I click on the attachment and the PDF is loaded into
Preview. All I can Read is Toolbar, double quote and sometimes, page one of one
zero.

Re: How do I get a word count in Pages?

2015-02-12 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Jamie,

When you find the Word Count, you’ll see that it’s a button and clicking it
will give you other options such as Character count. You find the Word Count
button to the right of the document layout area.

Cheers,

Anne

email headers

2015-02-12 Thread Lorie McCloud
I’m having trouble reading message headers. somebody sends me an email and also
sends it to another person so we can connect. I can read the sender’s name, my
name and the other person’s name but not their email address. is there a way to
do this?

Thanks.
