Viewing Smart folders criteria

2014-12-23 Thread Phil Halton
I’ve just started working with smart folders after listening to David
Griffith’s podcast. I’ve been able to create a saved search as a smart folder
but I have a question.

How can you inspect the criteria used in the smart folder? That is, How can you
go back and look at the rules you used to create the original search?
It’s great to have a smart folder, but if you don’t know what rules that smart
folder uses to gather together its files, rules you’ve long forgotten, well…
wouldn’t that bug you too?
I’m sure I’m missing it sitting right before my eyes, but please chime in if
you know the answer.

How in the world do you get to a program that is open yet does not appear anywhere

2014-12-23 Thread Brian Fischler
So I just bought Audio Switcher which I read there was a screen that you have
to hit VO F2 to use the window chooser menu to get to with VO. So I do that and
nothing is presented to me except my desktop. I am still running mavericks. So
I go to delete the program from my applications folder to reinstall it and I am
told the program cannot be deleted as it is running. I have open the
application chooser and the program does not show there, I have opened the
force quit menu and it does not appear there, the program does not appear in
the menu extras. So how in the world do I find this program that is running?
Over all my first experiences with this program have been awful, and I would
not tell anyone with VO to buy it.

Re: Filling out pdf forms

2014-12-23 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
I haven't followed this thread too closely because of the holidays etc.
However, did you get PDF Pen pro or some other program? Nic and I had some
correspondence about this when I can use it just fine, and he couldn't. He and
I both got things resolved, so I was wondering if we could figure out what the
problem is. I filled out the form 1040 last year with this program, and
recently filled out a recertification for para transit with it also. Of course,
I was using voice over all the time. The only trouble I had was with the check
boxes, and they are still working on that.

on the specific page and, if a field is an Edit field, VO will announce it

improperly created editable forms. The Edit fields need to be properly

not be usable from within VO. So, if no Edit filed is announced, you’re

2014-12-23 Thread David Griffith
If you want to get rid of it then you could try going to system preferences
then users and groups and then login itemsto see if it is checked there to
be loaded at login. If it is then uncheck this item and restart your Mac. Now
try deleting it.

You don't have to do anything but just connect the HDMI cable. When you do

Hi Jeff,

Thanks. Yes the program is showing in Mission Control yet when I VO space or
hit return in mission control on it and do a VO F2 I am told there are no
windows but something is definitely there as I hear the ding when I try and do
anything at all, how in the world do I quit whatever this awful program is

Re: GarageBand

2014-12-23 Thread Faisal ali
Hi,
I can understand wanting to play it safe but being two major OS X versions
behind is going to be extremely problematic as you will encounter compatibility
issues with commonly used apps not to mention missing out on VO enhancements in
later versions of OS X.
I would at least upgrade to Mavericks to insure app compatibility issues are
reduced.

strange issue in Safari and bookmarks

2014-12-23 Thread Faisal ali
Hi all,
I’m not sure if this has already been brought up but I think I found what
appears to be a bug in Safari. After doing a CMD Option b to bring up the
bookmarks folder for editing, everything works fine. But when doing the same
command of CMD option b to dismiss the editor, safari becomes unresponsive. All
I see is a scrolle window with an empty HTML document. The only way to restore
Safari is by restarting it. Is anyone able to reproduce this?
Thanks

Re: working with iBooks On Mac

2014-12-23 Thread David Griffith
In relation to the reported table of contents issue I have not seen
this, certainly not in any iBook. However I can confirm difficulty with
the alternative method of chapter navigation by keyboard. short cut. In
your case I wonder if the book you are trying to read with its
associated table of contents is a properly formatted iBooks or epub
book. On other platforms I have found some books created in ePub format
by conversion programs sometimes have problems with table of contents
structures.

Re: GarageBand

2014-12-23 Thread Grant Hardy
Hi Ernest, you could always install Yosemite on a separate partition first to
try it out, or even on removable media (keeping in mind that things will feel
much slower on a removable drive).

I don’t have any experience with anything earlier than OS X Mavericks, but I
will say that Yosemite was an excellent upgrade for me in terms of
accessibility. Specifically, the improvements to web browsing with VO have
really made a difference. My understand is that accessibility with iWork is
much improved now from earlier versions. Unfortunately I can’t comment on the
iLife apps like Garage Band, and therefore don’t really have an answer to your
original question.

There certainly are bugs with Yosemite, and I can’t comment on how it might run
on older machines, but in general I think there’s much more to love than there
are problems. Some of the bugs are summarized on applevis.com if you wish to
make sure there’s nothing that will disrupt your workflow. There shouldn’t be
too much risk in backing up with Time Machine and then grabbing the free
upgrade to see how it runs. If you really need to, you can always go back.

Cheers,

Grant

Hi Brandon,

I don’t even believe there is a version of Microsoft Access available for Mac
OS X (accessible or otherwise). Therefore, there seems to be a misunderstanding

Where do the Apple apps, Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, fall short in
accessibility? Is there any compelling reason to pass these up in favor of
a third party suite that is yet to be accessible?

Because I am using DBT under Windows, I use MS Word to create my
documents. DBT has not yet released a Mac version but even if they did,
its anybody's guess that the Mac version will use Word or some other word

Re: Choppy Apple TV

2014-12-23 Thread Mary Otten
no, I don't even know if this TV has a headphone jack. And my experience with
headphone jacks is that the audio out leaves a lot to be desired. I am using
the analog out from the TV and the voiceover problem is solved.

I am using a Philips sound bar myself. I don’t really watch TV but enjoy many
devices through my Sound bar. I am currently using the Fiber Optic cables that
the Apple Tv allows for. I have used HDMI successfully as well though with my
LG Electronics sound bar that I had which broke.

Re: Choppy Apple TV

2014-12-23 Thread Mary Otten
Which AppleTV do you have, Scott? The second or third generation one? Someone
suggested that the latency problem is less or nonexistent with the more recent
model. Someone else said they still had choppiness. So I decided to go for the
analog out on my TV to the analog in on my sound bar.

Hey guys,

I remember some talk a while back about a program that worked similar to SPL on
the Mac. I thought it was called Dee Jay but can’t quite remember. Can anyone
please refresh my mind on this?

Re: How in the world do you get to a program that is open yet does not appear anywhere

2014-12-23 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey John,

Thanks will have to reinstall and try that, forgot about Activity monitor as I
have not used that in ages. The program is Audio Switcher. I have multiple
speakers hooked up to my mac and the program is supposed to easily allow you to
adjust the volumes of each speaker set via the extras menu instead of having to

Re: How in the world do you get to a program that is open yet does not appear anywhere

2014-12-23 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Okay, there is just one review for this app in the app store (the one where
this is two words) though admittedly it is not for the current version. The
reviewer cites only being able to kill it with activity monitor and though he
found the icon in the menu bar he says it was "stuck"; said developer did not
respond to complaints.

There is another app: AudioSwitcher, which is $0.99 and appears to have a
different developer; this is all one word by the way. Again, I don't know if
there are reviews for the current version but there are definitely a lot more
reviews for this one. I have not read them but it looks like they were more
positive though it wouldn't be fair to compare that with the one interview for
the other one. I don't know whether this other one will meet your needs but you
might want to check it out.

weirdness in Safari for me

2014-12-23 Thread Lorie McCloud
I’m pretty new to the Mac so there could be something I’m missing. I was just
on a website trying to activate a link. I checked to make sure cursor tracking
was on. when I would hit vo-space on the link it would just start to read the
heading to me again. this happened multiple times. I tried using quick-nav with
similar results. the link was recognized because Vo would say it was a link but
I couldn’t activate it no matter what I did. I also tried vo on each side of
the spacebar. suggestions?

Thanks.

Sorry but it appears that the $0.99 one is AudioSwitcher (wone word); the $4.99
one is "audio switcher" (two words). In the message below it is written with a
space - two words - but given as the $0.99 one. Really, they shouldn't have two
apps with a name only differing by a space or lack thereof, but it's there.

Re: strange issue in Safari and bookmarks

2014-12-23 Thread David Griffith
I will give it another try but so far I cannot replicate your problem.
What happens for me when I quit the bookmark editor is that I am in the
Toolbar. Rather than navigating around this I routinely hit command shift H to
go to my home page with focus on the web page. This was habit I developed under
Mavericks for those occasions I wanted to quickly get out of the Tool bar and
this seems to work just as well under Yosemite.

As i say I will keep on trying to see if I can reproduce your problem.

sound bar, voiceover becomes very choppy and inconsistent, to the
point to that sometimes I hear no voice over output at all for the

this problem with optical outs from a TV to a sound bar or anything to
do with optical out on the AppleTV would cause a problem. Surely, you
can't just use it with the HDMI and your TV speakers only?

well,
how long ago did you pay for that software? if you can't use it because of
accessibility issues, you might be able to get your money back (although, if
you got it through the app store, it might take some effort). Otherwise, try
contacting the software vendor. they might be able to help.

on the specific page and, if a field is an Edit field, VO will announce it

improperly created editable forms. The Edit fields need to be properly
tagged and inserted as an Edit Field. If the creator of the form just
left blank space and expected the user to enter info there, then it will
not be usable from within VO. So, if no Edit filed is announced, you’re

Hi,

Try using the return key. You can usually press tab or shift-tab to move
through links on the page and then press return to activate the link. Not
always the quickest method for navigating a page, but useful for when pages are
being uncooperative.

Re: Filling out pdf forms

2014-12-23 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Yes, after it was fixed, I am totally able to fill out the form on my own. The
issue Eric, is not with respect to the accessibility of the app, but with the
accessibility of the pdf forms, therefore, I’m not sure that an app return is
possible.

Re: Choppy Apple TV

2014-12-23 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I have the Apple TV 2 and have no issues like this when streaming music or HD
media either directly from my computer or from Apple using HDMI. As long as
your Internet connection is good, the WiFi Access Point is working normally and
you’re playing properly formatted media, there should not be any real
noticeable lag. VO should speak normally as well.

Maybe I dived into this thread late, so if I’m missing some part of the
conversation, I apologize.

Re: Choppy Apple TV

2014-12-23 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Scott,
Well, forgoing the whole TV thing is definitely not possible here. I have a
cited husband who would not be happy. Besides, I thought you needed the HDMI
something to do with the video, before you could do things like watch Netflix.

Hi, The apple tv itself has an optical output, but i think you need to

Re: How in the world do you get to a program that is open yet does not appear anywhere

2014-12-23 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey Cheryl,

Thanks so much for this info. Dumb me, as I remember reading about this app on
this list, and when I went to the app store and read the app description it
sounded like the app I wanted the .99 cents version, never in a million years
would have thought that there would be an app with the same name that does the
same thing and one works and one does not. I should have read the reviews of
the app before spending the .99 very fishy, and like you said I to am surprised
Apple would allow two apps with the same name to exist. Will have to look in to
the other app and contact Apple for a refund even if it is only .99,
interesting that the reviewer says the app does not work, surprised that Apple
allows it to still exist in the app store. The whole thing is very strange and
considering I buy a lot of apps this is a first. Thanks again for doing the due
diligence that I should have done myself. Best, and Happy Holidays.

Re: GarageBand

2014-12-23 Thread Gabriele Battaglia
Yeah and Garage Band is pretty darned awesome in Yosemite as well. I use
it for music and love it. The only thing I have found that I am
uncertain how to do is stretch my loops.

Hello.
How can you like it?
The last version has some serious inacessibility.
Gabriel.

Re: how to search on the mac using spotlight?

2014-12-23 Thread David Griffith
You can find all the Finder Podcasts on the Apple Vis Podcast feed or just go
to www.applevis.com and put Finder in the search
and my Podcasts should come up.

The links are still working though as I have checked them. You could also try
just looking in your download folder. You may well have downloaded them without
realising it as they come down quickly and as they are Pro links they will just
come straight down without an intervening web site..
The other thing to try is to copy and paste them rather than into Safari
rather than just clicking them.
