I can’t speak about the first two questions. But with regard to a useful website, www.applevis.com has a lot of useful info, discussions, guides and manuals people using mac computers have written, and you can search it for any questions you might have or even subscribe to a discussion list and post questions there. Re: very very new mac user
I don't use android devices, but my understanding is that when you plug them into a USB port, they look like hard drives. If that's the case, your Mac will see it like a drive, and it will be very easy for you to copy data to and from the unit. Also, don't forget that underneath it's glittery surface, the Mac has UNIX. You can always go to a shell, and do things that way, if you feel you would be faster. > On Nov 4, 2014, at 11:34 PM, Deedra Waters wrote: > > For the majority of my life i've been a linux user. Re: iCloudHello list does anybody know how to turn off iCloud thank you
Depends on where you want to turn if off. Mac? iPhone or iPad? On a Mac go to system preferences and on iOS go to settings. Re: very very new mac user
Hello Deedra, Well, there’s a name from the past. Welcome to the world of the Mac. You should feel quite at home with a Mac. Devices will mounted as on a Linux system. Although, this will be on /Volumes. The terminal will feel very familiar to you. Although, VoiceOver is not as good as speakup in the terminal. There are 2 package management systems that you can add to install packages within the terminal. One is called home brew, or something like that and the other is Mac Ports. Many of the familiar programs used on Linux appear to be available in Mac Ports. I’m guessing that an IRC might be a bit clunky on the terminal with VO but I’m only guessing. I have just installed the latest OS X Yosemite here and not reinstalled Mac Ports, so not in a position to test for you. Re: adobe flash player
That happened to me as well. I found that there was a message saying something to the effect that I had to close safari, or some such other thing, before the install could complete. Once I did the requested action, the install completed without a problem. Sorry, I can’t remember exactly what the requested action was - but I think I had to close out safari. Re: very very new mac user
As far as getting acquainted with the workings of VoiceOver on the Mac, three things will be of invaluable help. 1) Keyboard help (Command Option + K) entering keyboard help will let you press any key combo and hear what its function is - a great memory aid for learning the VO keystrokes. Exit keyboard help by pressing escape. 2) the quick start tutorial for VO, selected from within the VO help system (Command Option + H. If you’re completely unfamiliar with VO on the Mac, it’s a good jumping off point that will get your feet wet. 3) the Getting started guide - a complete user manual for VoiceOver. Also accessed from within the VO help system command option + H, It covers every aspect of VoiceOver and it will serve you well to spend the time to read it thoroughly. and refer to it as often as needed in the early days. Re: very very new mac user
First, a quick correction to Phil's message: the keys to press are control and option, not command and option. On a MacBook, these are the middle two of the group of four keys on the left side of the spacebar. Second, someone mentioned www.applevis.com as a resource. It is definitely a great place to visit, but I wanted to offer a link specifically for new Mac users. This page collects any guides, podcasts, or blog posts that are of particular benefit to those new to the Mac: http://www.applevis.com//new-to-mac > On Nov 5, 2014, at 8:59 AM, Phil Halton wrote: > > As far as getting acquainted with the workings of VoiceOver on the Mac, three > things will be of invaluable help. > 1) Keyboard help (Command Option + K) > entering keyboard help will let you press any key combo and hear what its > function is - a great memory aid for learning the VO keystrokes. Re: very very new mac user
Hi, Deedra -- and Hi Georgina! Here's yet another Linux person showing up on a Mac list. After about half a year with a Macbook Air I can't claim to be all that new to Mac. I can, I think, confidentally answer the question about IRC, because I have regular need of IRC in my work. My first efforts to bridge the gap were to try and run familiar Linux applications using VMware. While this works very well on a robust network with AC power, it hasn't worked at all well on crowded wifi using battery power. Which takes me to a plus one for homebrew. I prefer brew to macports because it takes care of more of the details. At the end of a successful brew session you get an executable under /usr/local/bin, and it just works like you'd expect it to work on Linux. With macports, you're responsible for symlinks, and maybe a bit more--I just don't recall right now. So, back to IRC. Having failed to find a VoiceOver friendly IRC client, I simply brewed up irssi and copied over my ~/.irssi directory. Works like a charm under Terminal. Oh, and for all those glorious flac files that Apple doesn't want you to listen to, just brew up mplayer and enjoy your tunes the way you already have them. No need to convert to alac. Thanks. Janina, that sounds like a plus there. how much of the terminal actually works with voiceover and how well? How accessible is Magix AudioCleaner Pro for Mac?
Hi. I need to do some audio clean-up on cassettes that I have digitised, and someone recommended Magix AudioCleaner Pro for the Mac. Unfortunately, there is no version that I know of for the Mac version, though there is one for Windows. Has anyone had any experience with this program and if so, how good are the clean-up results, and how easy is the program to use with VoiceOver? By the way, if anyone is interested in checking out the program, you can learn more by going to www.magix.com Thanks, Mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. VO hot keys in iTunes
Hi all, I thought I’d pass this along. I am using iTunes 12, however I am still on Mavericks. I decided to try to create VoiceOver hotkeys for the radio buttons my music, playlist, match, etc. in iTunes 12. I wanted to report so far it has been a great success. Even when I am in the store, I can hit hotkey 1 to focus my music, then I can quickly VO-Space on that. Honestly, I only marked my music & playlists, but it has turned out to be very handy. I can hit VO-2, focus on my playlist, VO-Space to activate, then VO-command-T which jumps me to the playlist table. It is the quickest navigation I have found so far in the new layout. Once you interact with the text area you write in, it works okay. Sometimes reviewing by word or character can cause focus to wander off, and I find things a bit verbose for my liking, but it works well enough. Of course, I should say that I'm an occasional Terminal user, so I can't offer insights like those who use it all the time could. > On Nov 5, 2014, at 12:25 PM, Deedra Waters wrote: > > Janina, that sounds like a plus there. how much of the terminal actually > works with voiceover and how well? Re: very very new mac user
Hi, Deedra: I'm not so sure it's an actual plus, just a reasonable work around when you need one. But, I've not tried actually working with irssi in the terminal in real time yet. I just came up with the approach and brewed it up this past Monday following a disasterous week trying to use the vms on my air during the annual W3C technical plennary conference. My intent is to log in during my next few teleconferences and see how it tracks. I will still have my Linux desktop as my primary IRC session, so the IRC session on my Air will be a second, expirimental login to the W3C IRC channel. I'll be interested to see how well VO keeps up as text scrolls on screen. I may try to look for something, just to see how effective that might be. But, come to think of it, I usually depend on Scroll Lock to freeze the screen when I look for something further back in the transcript, and I'm not so sure we have that on the Air. Anyone know? So far, my impression of VO in the Terminal is that it will work, if you need it to work, but it would never be my first choice. It's no Speakup for sure. Just tried it with a Samsung Galaxy S5 and it did not show up on my desktop. It's an OSX (not terminal) app and free so might be worth giving it a try. http://colloquy.info CB On 11/5/14, 2:30 PM, Janina Sajka wrote: Hi, Deedra: I'm not so sure it's an actual plus, just a reasonable work around when you need one. Janina Deedra Waters writes: Janina, that sounds like a plus there. how much of the terminal actually works with voiceover and how well? I'd still be using a lot of terminal apps accept for certain things that i want the gui for. so i'd like a good idea as to what to expect from the terminal and ways to make it work the best. -- Website: http://deedra.the-brannons.com blog: http://deedra.the-brannons.com/blog -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Recommendation for an external sound card for the mac needed.
The trick is to search for the term mini TosLink. I guess TosLink is the fiber optic cable you would run from a DVD player to a surround sound system (the square connector things) and a mini Toslink is the special one that ends in a plug that is shaped like a mini headphone jack. Here is one from Newegg for about $4: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA0PG17P1595&cm_re=mini_toslink-_-9SIA0PG17P1595-_-Product It has a mini on one end to go to your Mac and the regular square connector to go to your receiver which can then decode whatever channels you have. If you play a DVD on your Mac you will get the full 5.1 output on your receiver via this cable. CB On 11/5/14, 10:39 AM, Annie Skov Nielsen wrote: Hi Chris. Re: Fingerprint reader
I think you would need some drivers and such to make that work. My understanding is that there is some big key stored in the fingerprint scanner itself and that key is only output when the associated fingerprint matches "close enough". It's not like a fingerprint creates the key. So you would need software that would setup the connection between your fingerprint and the key and store that in the device. In good systems the fingerprint data itself never leaves the device (as is done in the iPhone). Re: very very new mac user
Deedra, My opinion is that VO access to the terminal is quite good. The terminal session is contained in a buffer. You can scroll line by line using VO + up/down. The other thing I wanted to mention is that there is a dropbox client for the mac. So if you can access dropbox from your tablet, you can use dropbox as a medium to transfer files between the mac and your tablet. Help again with Pages
Hello guys, help before my brain fries itself for sure. I seem to remember a discussion about this concerning Numbers, but I can’t remember what was said. I’m not even sure I need to do this. I want to put a centered title above a table, after having put some other text above it. It was a title page, so I inserted a page break, no problem there. But then I typed in the title of my table with a couple of carriage returns to have a blank line. Then I inserted a table, and it’s doing fine. However, I can’t get the centered title to go on the same page with the table. I thought I would rename the table, and chose show table name. I don’t want it outlined. If I show the table name, I can’t get the thing named something different than Table 1. If you show a table name, does it print the name on the page? If it does, does it do it for all the pages. I don’t want a running head. Gigi, who is getting tired now -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Hi all, would it be possible for me to update my machine to OS 10.10.1 when it comes out? I don’t want to update to 10.10 then to 10.1 as that whole process will be very time consuming. removing old time machine backups
Is it simple to remove old time machine backups? My partition for the time machine is only 500 gigs, and I don’t want multiple backups of my system taking up the entire drive when the data being backed up are cumulative. Re: removing old time machine backups
Hi, If you only use that drive for Time Machine backups, the Time Machine process will remove old backups on its own, ensuring you have enough room. If you do a massive change though, it may not have the room to complete that increment of the backup. Later... Re: removing old time machine backups
Ahh, that makes sense. I opened up the drive and just saw the previous back ups so thought they were just taking up room. Re: Dropbox in Yosemite
Dear Lisette, I upgraded to Yosemite a few weeks ago but have not had any trouble with Dropbox. Please forgive me if I say something you have already tried. I’ve just gone to menu extras with ctrl+f8. Once there, use vo+left and right arrows to move through the menu items. Otherwise if you just use arrow keys on their own, you won’t find Dropbox item. So now, using vo+arrow keys, I have found Dropbox icon. Now you have to bring mouse cursor to vo cursor with vo+command+f5. And then perform mouse click with vo+shift+spacebar. You will hear something like “application”. (If you get thrown out of the process here, use windows chooser menu to find Dropbox application window.) Now I used vo+arrow keys again to move through the window where voiceover reads titles of my files in Dropbox. The “settings” button or rather clickable area is at the very right of this list. I clicked on it and heard voiceover say menu. Now you can arrow up and down that menu and at the bottom you will find “preferences”. Activate preferences. If you get thrown out of this process by any chance - which happened to me - use your window chooser facility to find the dropbox window again. Once in preferences, you will have a few buttons: General, account, and two to other buttons which I can’t remember now. You can choose whatever button with the usual vo+spacebar here. Voiceover will announce that a button is selected but for me I couldn’t actually see the content of the window that I expected to have appeared as a consequence of my selection. After some experimenting, I realise that in here you have to press your tab button to move into the window to examine its content and make changes. I hope this might help. Sorry if this description is a bit complex but dropbox is not very easy. By the way, my dropbox version is 2.10.41. Also, if you check your home folder, can you see dropbox folder there?
