Re: to the user having issues with their Drop box and sharing files

Been there, done that, and in the share menu are mail, airdrop, twitter and
facebook i think and more... Choosing the "more" option brings up some system
settings, but dropbox choices simply aren't there. Nowhere in this menu can
they be found, they aren't there.

There wouldn't be a "dropbox" menu under vo-shift-m.
If you go into your dropbox directory and do vo-shift-m on one of the
items, there is a whole menu of items as you arrow down or do
vo-down-arrow, and in there you will find a share link as well as a share
folder and a share that has email, message and airdrop under it. If you
are focussed on a dropbox item and don't get the menu when you do
vo-shift-m, it means something in your focus isn't working properly. What
usually works for me under these circumstances is to turn cursor tracking
 off and back on again.

Just to cover the bases, there is also a dropbox menu in your menu extras
(vo-m (not shift-m for this) twice. This shows settings and recently added
and various information and options. This is sometimes tricky to access,
more so than other menu extras items. For me, vo-shift-space on this menu
usually gets me into this area, but this is a totally different thing than
the sharing you are asking about.

Re: A real clean install

Hi,

Yes, once VO is on at the Language Chooser window, it is on and accessible all
the way through the installation. There are a few occasions where you may need
to use the Window Chooser (VO-f2-f2), but all options are fully accessible with
VO.

Re: adobe reader for the mac

2014-10-04 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

No, Adobe Reader is not accessible with VO at all. As Ray mentioned, the
built-in Preview app will handle pdf's just fine other than finding edit fields
in editable pdf's. Often web-sites claim that you need Adobe Reader to read
their pdf's, but this is a misleading statement as there are a number of pdf
readers out there that read pdf documents as well or better than Adobe Reader.

Hi,

Depending on your settings within Safari, pdf's are either opened within the
Safari browser or they need to be downloaded first then opened with your
preferred pdf reader. I expect that when you downloaded the pdf, then
subsequently opened it, the file was opened with the Preview app, not Adobe.
Can't recall where this setting is to tell Safari to open within the browser as
opposed to not.

Re: Replacement for Open Book on the MacBook Air?

2014-10-04 Thread Mary Otten
You need software. You can try docuscan plus, which is cloud-based, and only
scans English. You can try Abbyy fine reader Pro from the app store. It costs
less, does foreign languages, and there is an extensive list of scanners which
it directly supports. Or you can try running Windows on your Mac and continuing
to use open book. In order to do that, you will need to run either Boot Camp,
or you will need to purchase a program that will let you run a Windows "virtual
machine". There are partisans of both of those solutions. The cheapest is Abbyy
fine reader, which is $100 in the Mac app store. There is a learning curve with
that.

Re: adobe reader for the mac

2014-10-04 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Preview works very well for me. In fact, it's pretty well what I use for pdf's
all the time and have for years. With respect to your Adobe issue, I'm
wondering if you've installed an old version of Adobe some time in the past.
If so, the older versions of Adobe sometimes mess with Safari's ability to open
pdf's within the browser itself. You can check this by going into Macintosh
HD, into Library, into Internet PlugIns and checking if there is a version of
Adobe PDF Viewer there. If there is, Trash it then Quit and re-open Safari so
that Safari's native pdf viewer is used. I do find it easier to use Preview
itself, though, rather than reading the pdf's from within the Safari plugin
reader. When in Preview, I usually tell it to show in Single page view but
that's just my preference, it's not necessary if you're going to use it to read
a large document in one swoop. Yes, I find tables difficult, but there often
difficult in just about any situation.

TD Bank US app: Other experiences?

2014-10-04 Thread Christine Grassman
These queries are for any fellow list members who use the TD Bank US iPhone app
and on-line banking on the tdbank.com web site:

1. Web site:
A couple of years ago, I went from having full access to the site to being
thrown off as soon as I logged in. This has never changed, despite playing
around with Java, updating OS 10 software, trying different browsers, nothing.
(I can read the main site and all links and information just fine, but as soon
as I log in to do my banking . . . poof!)

2. The iPhone app:
It did not have all the features of the site, but what it did offer was fully
accessible from the time of the app's debut . . . until I tried paying a bill
yesterday.
I was able to transfer money as usual. However, when I attempted to pay a
bill, I saw that the layout had changed slightly, and despite filling out all
of the fields, it froze on the "enter payment amount" screen, even though
VoiceOver was reading the payment amount I had written in.
According to a sighted assistant, the amount could not be seen. When he shut
off VoiceOver, all went fine.
Very frustrating, since I am the one who takes care of all household bills.
I would like to hear others' experiences with this app and web site, and if
anyone has discovered a workaround for either, or preferably, both.
Thanks in advance.

If you go into your dropbox directory and do vo-shift-m on one of the items,
there is a whole menu of items as you arrow down or do vo-down-arrow, and in
there you will find a share link as well as a share folder and a share that has
email, message and airdrop under it. If you are focussed on a dropbox item and
don't get the menu when you do vo-shift-m, it means something in your focus
isn't working properly. What usually works for me under these circumstances is
to turn cursor tracking off and back on again.

Just to cover the bases, there is also a dropbox menu in your menu extras (vo-m

various information and options. This is sometimes tricky to access, more so
than other menu extras items. For me, vo-shift-space on this menu usually gets

Tim,
I tried again. Plugged the bootbale USB drive in, restarted, got the
the startup manager, no speech. Conmad F5 did nothing. The bootable
drive was not listed anyway so I aborted. Verified that the Mavericks
installer was still on that drive.

I need to get that speech before I proceed. Any ideas? Thanks.

There wouldn't be a "dropbox" menu under vo-shift-m.

(not shift-m for this) twice. This shows settings and recently added and
various information and options. This is sometimes tricky to access, more so
than other menu extras items. For me, vo-shift-space on this menu usually gets
me into this area, but this is a totally different thing than the sharing you
are asking about.

Yes, there are only the standard menu choices that are there in every instance
of the right click menus in the finder. No special dropbox menus or menu items.
I've even tried going in from the finder by opening a hard drive and then using

Not sure what more I can say. The right click, context, shortcut,
menu contains standard menu items plus whatever is unique to the program
or file its been activated on. In this case I am seeing the desired

there you will find a share link as well as a share folder and a share that has
email, message and airdrop under it.

For me, vo-shift-space on this menu usually gets
me into this area, but this is a totally different thing than the sharing you
are asking about.

On the home screen, I cannot filter the list of apps when using hand writing

with a search engine, then go to it using a search result (of course, double
check that you're on the actual site once you get there). Log in that way, and
it should work fine.

Suggestion, if this is important to you.
I know directly from tD bank senior staff that they are upgrading their
accessibility at all levels.
without hearing from customers about an issue, they may not fix it and
they sincerely want to fix things.
I would strongly suggest contacting them. if you wish to do this, and

The idea that you can only reach the place and log in using a google search
is nonsensical.

Re: iOS 8.0.2 crashes regularly and other issues.

2014-10-04 Thread Erik Heil
Hello Everyone, new wine. First of all, thank you for starting this thread.
I'm going to try and describe some of the bugs that I have described.
Perhaps this is related to my setup, but we will see. Ok guys, on to the
bugs.
The first bug that I noticed, is there. First of all, I miss mention that
this is not a bug. I OS 8, however in a present for at least a few
releases. This is related to list elements, and how they are handled by
voice over. Interest you enough, this only comes in to contact when certain
elements are being used. An example of this bug, look at the article a
history of Mac OS X, or, Mac OS. This can be found on Wikipedia. It should
be noted that not all lists actually have this bug. I think it may be
related to how was over actually Parsons the lists. You wine the next bug I
like to introduce is the bug that has to do with touch tones. Or I should
say, touch-tone keys. This bug does not happen often, but when it does, you
either have to close the phone application, or reboot the device in order
for the DTMF tones to stop playing. I have personally discovered this bug.
Another bug which happen this is related to voice over crashing in certain
circumstances. Couple days ago I was looking at a profile with the new
Facebook app.. However, it should be noted that this is not just a normal
crash. 3 and why it is not a normal crash is due to the simple fact that
when I attempted to restart the server, it did not work. Interestingly
enough, if I was to tell Siri to start over, confirm, there is no speech at
all from the device., device., they may not be able to do this. Luckily, I
would know that you have to double tap the screen after holding down the
power button. Booted, did come back, and everything was back to normal.
This is a showstopper, and should not have been introduced in hos. After
all, this operating system was tested. I understand that bugs do occur, and
they are simply a normal process of developing software. However, I believe
that they should have been work all the control. I would like to hear any
comments any of you have. Thank you for all your time. Eric

I believe that Nisus Writer Pro is available from Mac-update and also the App
Store.

To be clear Nisus Writer Pro is a fully fledged Word Processor and some believe
it it the best available for the mac. It unlikely that anybody would buy Nisus
just for reading PDF documents but I thought I would mention it in case people
already have it and do not realise that it it can also be used to read and edit
PDF files.

Re: adobe reader for the mac

2014-10-04 Thread Deb Lewis
I had no idea that Nisus would read PDF's. That's the best tidbit I've
had all week.
I frankly find Preview totally worthless unless you just want to hear
your file as a data dump. I usually need to read more carefully and
don't want to just hear a text string with no ability to start and
stop, spell words etc. PDF has been one of the most annoying aspects
of the Mac.

Re: TD Bank US app: Other experiences?

2014-10-04 Thread Christine Grassman
I tried Alex's Google search suggestion, with the exact same result. Don't like
Firefox at all, since (at least the last time I tried it), it was pretty
useless with VO.
The iPhone app was fantastic until yesterday; however, it was never enough, as
I could not check history of payments or similar tasks.

Google did not work. I did call their accessibility number as listed on
their web site the other night. The young woman had never heard of VoiceOver;
her supervisor got on and tried to help me use Java to fix it. No fix. I asked
them to please pass this problem along. I was told they had never heard about
this issue before.
If you have a different and more knowledgeable contact, I would love to hear

Firefox is now not bad. It's just the problem being using VO navigation
commands doesn't seem to work.

What can't you do with the iOS app? I check my deposit history and payment

I'll check again, but last time I checked, payment history wasn't an option,
just account balances, transferring, and paying bills.
Yesterday, it would not accept a payment amount in the edit field for that
item. It continued to ask for it, and did nothing when I hit submit, despite
all other fields being chosen. Someone sighted had to input the payment amount
with VO off.

Double tap on account history. Then, choose the account and double tap on
that. Then, you will have options for 10 days, 30 days, 60 days or pending
transactions. Double tap on the one you want to see and it's in a table format.

RE: How do i get rid of the preview pane in Mail?

2014-10-04 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Krister,

Not to appear provocative but I am curious as to why you want to "get rid of"
the preview pane in mail?

You are not alone, many, many people choose to do so but I do not know why.

As for me, I find that the application works beautifully using the standard
display configuration in conversation view, with the preview pane active.

In fact, were it not for this, the best Mac application I've ever used, there
would be no way I could subscribe to so many mailing lists and hope to manage
them all.

As I said, I'm just curious.

Thank you,

Mark
