Alex is only available on devices with a 64 bit processor. Neither the iPhone
4s nor iPad 3 have such a processor. It has nothing to do with whether Alex is
available in your country.

OK, I realize *everyone* is probably downloading now, but I have not seen
any times longer than six hours with a slow connection for downloading iOS
8. Both my husband and I are getting "13 hours" as an estimate, one hour
after seeing "8 hours". Our WiFi connection is fairly good most of the
time. Should we cancel and restart, or just leave it?

Re: Typing mode question

2014-09-18 Thread BobH.
Seems to be a hybrid of the two, so tap the right character and it is done.
If you drag around like I do, you'll still have to tap it when you find it.

I'll stick to touch typing I think.

Re: Typing mode question

2014-09-18 Thread BobH.
Ok, we're on a different issue, direct typing and the braille are different
things, all be they both set on the rotor.

I also understand that you can't change the dots1-3 and 4-6 around, so many
are trying to braille upside down.

Hi there
Actually, this appears to work very similar to embryo. I was very fast with
embryo, but I must be doing something wrong because I can't make the
keyboard work with braille. Anybody who's tested this thing know what we
might be doing wrong to make this thing work?

For one thing, I think maybe that I'm not fast enough to calibrate my dots.
I keep getting the opposite was that I want. For instance I want dots 456 to
be on the right and that's 123 to be on the left, and I can't get in the
backward.
Sincerely,
Gigi

Re: Typing mode question

2014-09-18 Thread Eugenia Firth
Actually, although I still have a problem, if you do just the opposite of what
VO says to do, you can get the dots reversed the way you would on a Perkins
brailler. For instance, it says to do the right hand first. If you do the left
hand first, it seems to put the dots in the right place. However, I heard VO
say dots calibrated, and I got dots in weird places and they seem to be
misorganized.

Hi,

that's not what they meant. They are saying, if you don't have a 5S, you can
not get Alex on your iPhone. It will only work on Apple devices with a 64 bit
processor. 5S, iPad mini retina, and the iPad air. And of course, the iPhone
6 and 6+ come tomorrow.

Hi. I'm selling a mint condition humanware brailliant bi40
bluetooth/USB braille display that works with iOS, OSX, and windows if
you'd be interested...

I found the braille cells to have a nice solid feel without being
"sharp" like other displays I looked at before purchasing it.

Hit me up off list for more info.

Thanks,

Cameron.

That depends on how much money you are willing to spend, how many
cells you want and where you like the buttons or wheels used for
moving through a document. I would recommend you go to any place you
know where they can show you different options and look at them. We
all have our favorites.

Re: recommendation for braille device

2014-09-18 Thread Cheree Heppe
Cheree Heppe here:

Braille aware devices could be said to come in two basic types: displays and
note takers. Now, a hybrid type having some note taking capabilities also are
emerging.

Which Braille device you may prefer is personal. Unfortunately, a blind user
cannot simply memorize one set of operational commands and then use those to
evaluate every brand of Braille aware device. Each company designs commands
and key press combinations special to that company into their devices.
Sometimes, the command structure varys widely even within one company's
offerings.

I have not seen many of these Braille devices and can speak from limited direct
experience. I have liked a device not supported by HumanWare now, called the
PK. This operated easily and nearly silently and was small and easily
portable. It had good word processsing and other useful apps and interfaces.
The company who made these, Baum Retec, out of Germany, now has a U.S.
subsidiary in Massachusetts. Their note takers are pretty useful, but I must
admit to difficulty learning their command structure. That could be me,
however and your milage may vary.

I've heard of something for unfer F1,000.00 called the Braille Pen. It now has
cursor routing capability. I am not familiar with what it can or cannot do.
It is small and portable.

I guess I would contact the American Council of the Blind and ask about
resources and user experiences with Braille aware devices. You could also
contact the NFB or your local rehab agency, providing the agency is worth the
trouble where you are served.

What I did was to obtain a used PK and send it to Oehm Electronics in San Jose,
California to get the very long lasting battery they have access to and to get
the machine looked at. This way, I could use the PK and maybe even pay the
nearly $400 to HumanWare to get the last update for that device. My PK I sent
to Baum to be upgraded to one of their Pronto devices. This will give me
multi-connect Bluetooth capability and a lot of functionality. I do have to
re-learn how to use that newly upgraded device, however.

Hope this has helped and not confused. Oh, yes. A lot of people seem to like
the Hymms (sp) devices.

Cheree Heppe

Actually, although I still have a problem, if you do just the opposite of
what VO says to do, you can get the dots reversed the way you would on a
Perkins brailler. For instance, it says to do the right hand first. If you
do the left hand first, it seems to put the dots in the right place.
However, I heard VO say dots calibrated, and I got dots in weird places and
they seem to be misorganized.

Re: Typing mode question

2014-09-18 Thread Lisette Wesseling
I have found the braille to be pretty good on the iPad. I never got MBraille to
work form me on the iPad, but the Apple braille lets me actually type in
braille on my iPad. I actually find table top mode easier on the iPad, though
will probably use away mode on the phone.
There are some bugs but it's definitely usable as is.

Hi!
Are there a lot of bugs with voiceover turned on?
I haven't read much about it.
Some ofcourse but the thing about dialing phone numbers was a new one to me.

anyone know about problems with iBooks in IOS 8?

2014-09-18 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone knows anything about bugs with the latest iBooks? I
upgraded to IOS 8 last night, and installed the update to iBooks. Now, I can
see the publisher's blurb for my books when I click on the Purchased Tab, but
that's all I can see. When I switch to my books, the list is empty, despite
the fact that I have several downloaded. It doesn't matter whether I select My
Bookshelf, Titles, or Authors, I see nothing. I had my sighted husband look at
my phone, and he confirmed that the books are not showing up on the screen at
all. Anyone else had this issue?
Thanks,
Donna

Hi,

This sounds like you're hearing the system voice that's speaking other
information.
You can change the rate of this by going into system
preferences>dictation and speech>text to speech tab, and in there you'll
find adjustments of the system voice, as well as the rate.

Re: App store in iOs 8?

2014-09-18 Thread Ray Foret Jr
I concurr with Tim. You might, if you ain't done so already, try holding down
the power button and the home button for ten seconds. this will force your
phone to do a hard restart. One note of caution about this. DO, NOT, hole the
buttons in for more than ten seconds or you will send the phone in to UDF mode.
This is where you'd do a hard reset of the phone's firmware.
