Re: batch conversion for AIFF?

2014-08-07 Thread Piotr Machacz
If you're referring to alert sounds in general (and I'm sure Mail supports
using those), they can be any format that quicktime supports. So not just aiff,
but also wav/mp3/m4a/caf/au will work. Just put them in ~/library/sounds and
most apps should pick them up.

For those of you who want advancement in technology. I am posting to both

We should all write to apple and state that we'd like Voice Over to work with

Partially sighted people as this would improve our employment aspects and
mobility immensly. I will not get a reply but at least they will read my

Re: Fillable MS Word files on Mac?

2014-08-07 Thread Alex Hall
So the table is how it's supposed to be? I have never used this kind of form on
either platform, and expected a prompt, then something VO would identify as a
text field, for instance. Also, I had sighted help filling this one out, and we
noticed that a line of hint text appeared when you put your cursor in any of
the editable areas. Is there any way to read that help text with VO? Thanks.

Re: Moving Columns in Numbers

2014-08-07 Thread Phil Halton
A simpler method would be to simply copy the column, then insert a new column
where you want the data, and then do a paste. Move to the top of the column,
then do a shift command down arrow to select the entire column. Then do an
option right arrow at the column after which you want the data to appear. Of
course, don't forget to copy the selected fcolumns first, then paste into the
newly created column. This may still mess up your formulas depending on whether
you used relative or absolute addressing.

That gets fairly tricky. I don't know if you're writing your own formulas, or
if these are someone else's. But, the addressing system they use will determine
if the formulas can be moved from one position to another without screwing them
up.

Re: Reading Bookshare's XML

Dear Christine,

Hope you're well. I remember having this conversation with you earlier this
year. Since then, I've figured out a work around to open Bookshare files in
Mavericks. After you download the daisy file from Bookshare, open up the folder
you downloaded and search for the file with the xml extension. Rename the
extension to html. You'll then be able to open and read the book in Safari with
VO.

Happy reading.

One Day only Mariner software sale in Mac App store 8/7/2014

2014-08-07 Thread Christina C.
HI all, Mariner is having a one day sale on their software. I cannot speak for
their accessibility but it seems that I have heard that Mac Journal and
MacGourmet are somewhat useable. This would be a purchase at your own risk :)
as I do not know for sure how or even if the software is VO friendly. Maybe
some folks on this list could help out with that info. I just wanted to pass
this along as their software is a bit pricey in my opinion compared to other
software. The also have paperless, and some author, and screen/play writing
software. I don't know much about all of their software products. I am going to
bite the bullet and take a risk with macJournal.

As a side note, I personally chose Paprika over MacGourmet. Paprika is not made
by Mariner. I used a trial of Mariner's MacGourmet several years ago and found
it fairly VO friendly but i did not try all aspects and it was a long time ago.
I personally found Paprika easier to use. That's just me though. :)

Down on this page is a link called "shop now" that should bring up the Mac app
store with their products. I believe some of the discounts may be up to 50%. I
am pretty sure the macJournal app is 50% off but I could be wrong.

Re: Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter: Computers & Accessories

2014-08-07 Thread Kevin Barry
That would work. Still, a better idea is to not connect directly to
a modem no matter what method you employ.
Much better and safer is to have a router connect to the modem and
you connect to the router.

You can do that either through a cable or over wifi.

Re: Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter: Computers & Accessories

2014-08-07 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Yes, that's the adaptor you're looking for. Simply plug the adaptor into your
MacBook Air, and an Ethernet cable from the other end of the adaptor to your
cable modem. Often, the default settings will just work, using DHCP.

I don't see any problem with connecting directly to the Internet, as long as
you don't leave any services running for public access that you don't need. In
fact, I see only advantages; you'll have a public IP address and many
applications will perform very well. However, unless you also turn your
MacBook Air into a router (which you can do easily in Sharing preferences) you
will only be able to use your Internet connection for that one MacBook.

Re: Moving Columns in Numbers

2014-08-07 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi Barry and Phil,

Thanks both for your help.

Barry, your tip of first VO-spacing on the column reference tab took me further
than I had gotten before, but still no success. The results were a bit flaky.
I'm not sure I exactly understood your instructions. After VO-spacing on the
column reference tab for the column I wanted to move, I pressed mouse down with
VO-command-shift-space. Sometimes doing this caused the menu to pop up with the
sort and filter options etcetera. Other times it didn't. But it never said
anything about moving, and moving to another column and pressing mouse up
didn't have any effect. Pressing VO-comma would still announce, 'Marked column
X for drag', or whatever, but when I'd try and drop it would often say the
marked item is no longer in view, even though I had only tried to move it one
column over, and other times it would say 'column X inserted', but would
actually not have moved the column at all.

Phil, the formulas are my own but the column I want to move is in a data table
and the formulas and functions I have in the summary tables are quite
complicated, and I don't really want to look through every one to find if any
use relative references and would break. In any event, I'd like to learn how to
move columns (as opposed to copying and pasting) to enhance my Numbers toolbox
and ensure that for this time and for the future I am able to move columns
without upsetting formulas. Having said that, I appreciate your pragmatic
suggestions and might ultimately have to resort to that or to asking for
sighted assistance.

many thanks again and if you have any other help, thoughts or suggestions I'd
love to hear them.

Re: Fillable MS Word files on Mac?

2014-08-07 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Ahh, Alex, wishful thinking. If only that were the case. I don't think it's
that good on either platform. Only web forms are that accessible. You could
quite easily hack something like that together with AppleScript, but the forms
themselves are, in Pages anyway, just regular old word processing documents
with blank spaces for you to type your response.

I don't know of anyway to read those help tags. The forms I use have
hints/instructions typed into the body of the form, but I don't know exactly
how these are displayed to sighted users. It might be that they are simply
typed in as ordinary text, I'm not sure.

Re: Moving Columns in Numbers

2014-08-07 Thread Barry Hadder
Hello Nicholas.

After you selected the tab with vo-space, did you route the mouse to vo with
vo-command-f5? You want to do that before you lock the mouse. That is the
only reason I can come up with as to why the menu was activated.
You might try hiding any other open windows with command-option-h before
routing the mouse in case something is interfering with it.
After you lock the mouse, you move vo to the tab that you want to move the
column to and release it. Let me know if I need to explain something further.
I've tried this many times and never had it fail. It only takes seconds.
Hope this helps.

Re: Moving Columns in Numbers

2014-08-07 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi Barry,

In that case I did understand you correctly. Yes, I routed the mouse to the VO
cursor with VO-command-F5 before pressing mouse down (even though this is often
not necessary when I have the mouse pointer to always follow the VO cursor). I
also tried bringing the active window to front with VO-shift-F2, hiding other
applications with command-option-h, and making Numbers full screen. Some of the
times when I would try and see what was under the mouse pointer with VO-F5, I
would just get a funk sound telling me there was some problem. However, other
times it would announce the header of the column but the moving process still
didn't work. I did notice, however, that when I would check what was under the
mouse pointer it would tell me the header name, not the letter of the column.
Not sure if this has something to do with the problem.

That's too bad, it'd be nice if forms showed up as, well, forms. Still, I think
I have the hang of this now; you write in the same cell as the prompt, not the
ones after it, apparently. That seems odd, yet also makes things easier. I only
determined this after looking at a copy of the same form once I had gotten
sighted help filling it out in MS Word.

Re: Moving Columns in Numbers

2014-08-07 Thread Barry Hadder
Well, unfortunately it sounds to me like you are doing everything right. I've
noticed the funk sound myself and it doesn't seem to matter. I've tried it
myself in full screen and regular and both with mouse following vo and not but
all with the same results. I just can't make it fail.

If you git a menu when you lock the mouse, it means that it isn't in the right
place. So it sounds to me as it the mouse isn't moving to vo as it should. I
recommend going in to voiceover utility/visuals and make sure that if show
voiceover cursor is checked that the magnification is set to 1. I've noticed
that if it is set higher, then many times the mouse wont route to vo correctly.
If that doesn't help than you might need to move the window around.
The only time I get the menu that you mentioned is when I control click in a
table cell. But it sounds to me like you are in the reference tabs as you
should be.

After checking VO Utility turns out I didn't have the mouse pointer following
the VO cursor. I changed this so now it is. I checked and the magnification was
set to 1.

I tried again but still got the same result with the mouse down opening the
menu.

When you bring the mouse pointer to the column reference tab, what does
VoiceOver tell you is under the mouse pointer? For me it gives the text in cell
1 of the relevant column.

Perhaps I just have a dud version. :) Might have to get a sighted person to
take a look at what the mouse is doing.

For reference, I'm running Numbers version 3.2 (1861).
