Screen Casts in Quicktime?

2014-07-24 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all
I reported a bug in an Apple beta the other day, and an engineer has asked me
to record a screen cast of what I'm doing when the bug happens. I have never
done this before, but the note the engineer sent said to use Quicktime. Since
the extent of what I can see on the screen is if it's on or off, what tips do
people have for this? I haven't tried it yet, and plan to do so later today,
but if anyone has suggestions, I'd love to hear them. Thanks!

continuing with attachment weirdness

2014-07-24 Thread Donna Goodin
Good morning, all,

So, continuing with the attachment weirdness, this morning I wanted to open a
later version of the same PDF document. Everything worked as expected. I was
able to view it in Quicklook, and then save it. Very strange.
Cheers,
Donna

Replying to mails in the Apple mail program in Mavericks and onwards?

2014-07-24 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi there, This topic has probably been covered before, but at that time i

trying to reply to the sender of a mail and not to the entire mailinglist but i
can’t find a way to just reply to the sender. Has this feature been taken away
or is there something i have missed?

Just do a full-screen recording by pressing Control N. That'll be the simplest
way to do it without seeing the screen. It's actually pretty good for screen
capturing.

Could be the email list or group has adopted a new poilcy where such
lists or groups and providers as well now put the email list or group
address in the From field. This creates problems such as yours.

This policy is from DMARC and Yahoo was anong the first to adopt
this poilicy. Supposedly it is to control spam. Google DMARC.

I have not found a way around this. Be a good time to create a

Re: Replying to mails in the Apple mail program in Mavericks and onwards?

2014-07-24 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
No, this isn't DMARC; Google Groups only mangles the From field when it needs
to do so for DMARC purposes.

The problem lies with the regrettable (but very common) practice of lists
munging the Reply-To field so that the list address is listed, thus directing
replies back to the list. Mail.app for some reason removed explicit support
for replying to the Sender, so you will have to burrow in the headers, find the
From line, copy the address from the menu (click the author's name), and
manually send mail to the recipient. Sorry about that.

Because so many lists do this by default, I now hit Reply-All instinctively,
because Reply alone is almost always completely useless. Simply get into the
habit of checking the composer window before you hit send.

Re: Replying to mails in the Apple mail program in Mavericks and onwards?

2014-07-24 Thread The Believer
Perhaps so but most email lists are set to Reply to Sender which is
the list the email came from. And prior to DMARC, it was nearly always
possible simply to retrieve the real sender''s address out of the From
field.

I do think this DMARC thing has mangled the Reply To field.

Googlegroups has apparently not gone down this road yet. But
Yahoogroups and freelists have.

Re: Replying to mails in the Apple mail program in Mavericks and onwards?

2014-07-24 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Google only replaces the From when necessary for DMARC. If a Yahoo user were
to post to this list, you would see the message as coming from them via the
list (it would say so in the sender's name) and the address in the From field
would be that of the group. I don't know for certain whether GG also destroys
the sender's address in other header fields--I never checked that--but for
Mailman lists with the DMARC patch, Mailman drops a copy of the poster's
address in the Reply-To field, so you can still extract and use it. In spite
of this, Apple dropped the prompt asking whether or not you wanted to use the
sender address when it detected that the reply address was likely to be a list
posting address; I have no idea why.

As to DMARC in general, well, to be honest I'm a resigned supporter. The fact
is that unlike the web, email has no definite, identifiable, user-visible
author address. Yes, DMARC messes up mailing lists and spam (and the people
who claim to save us from it) have won again, but we could live with the
changes if we all made the best of it.

Cheers,
Sabahattin

The implementation of the DMARC policy change is not consistent,
which makes being subscribers of the various email lists not so fun any
more.

I am not yet using the mail app but am hopeful by the time I start
using it, it will be working right.

In the meantime, since the bad guys have won again, the best thing
we can do is create that signature.

Re: Replying to mails in the Apple mail program in Mavericks and onwards?

2014-07-24 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
I agree; it's even less fun for list admins and postmasters who now have to
patch stuff up for no conceivable reason just to keep the messages flowing,
trust me. The world would be a better place without either Yahoo or AOL, and
if we could just stop them from posting, our problems would be solved. :)

There is work being done in the relevant groups (and by "Work", I mean catering
to the damage, because the big guys have already made up their minds) to make
the behaviour consistent. The best fix I saw was in LISTSERV(R), which creates
a per-subscriber alias so behaviour continues to be exactly as it always was.
Sadly, LISTSERV(R) costs $10,000 plus annual subscription just for the
"Classic" (i.e. not crippled) version, and I ain't got that kinda money.

If/when you switch to Mail.app, the critical thing is to check all the fields
before you send. Each name is an embedded object that reveals the address when
you click on it, and it can be copied from one field to another. So regardless
of the behaviour, you can get replies sent where you need them to go, even if
it's not the easiest thing in the world to do.

Cheers,
Sabahattin

RE: yosemite public beta

2014-07-24 Thread Tristan Bussiere
Hi Alex,

I installed Yosemite public beta relatively easily. Given, I did not receive
the e-mail, but I did have a code waiting for me when I logged into
Appleseed, which I clicked. After clicking on the link it opened up in the
app store.

It seems that, according to posts and the way this whole procedure is
occurring, Apple disregarded what they said at the keynote. A lot of people
who didn't even apply for the beta early on are getting downloads while
people that applied before them are getting "reached capacity" or "Code
already used" errors in the app store.

One question I have about this whole public beta is whether we can discuss
it openly or not. Are Appleseed public beta testers under the same NDA as if
we were running developer copies?

Those who signed up should be receiving an email with the download codeat
some point. I haven't yet, but Twitter seems to indicate the email wave has
started. I say this because, for most of the day, appleseed.apple.com
has been down when I try to access it.

Re: yosemite public beta

2014-07-24 Thread Alex Hall
Indeed, I was able to download as well; for the moment, the site seems to be
working.

Yes,you are covered by the NDA, which should have appeared when you first
signed up for the program. You can discuss only features that were already
discussed at WWDC, but nothing else. So, new features, bugs, annoyances,
anything you run into while testing are to be kept silent, unless you can find
a WWDC video demonstrating the exact thing you want to talk about. Obviously,
bugs and other feedback are fine to share with Apple, through the Feedback app
installed with the beta. For public forums, though, it's safer to just not say
anything at all, I figure.

As to the clean install question, this installer will act like any OS X
installer. You can toss it on a thumb drive, put it on a new partition, all
that. It is a beta, but the underlying install process is the same as
Mavericks, as I expect any OS X install will be for the near future.

Re: yosemite public beta

2014-07-24 Thread Alex Hall
No. As with any OS install, once you boot into the OS of your choice, you can't
do anything with apps or services on another OS, because that second one is not
booted. You may be able to access files, depending on your permissions, but you
cannot actually run apps. You will instead need to re-download any apps you
want to test, but keep in mind that not all apps will work with Yosemite yet as
it is, after all, still a beta.

Those who signed up should be receiving an email with the download codeat some
point. I haven't yet, but Twitter seems to indicate the email wave has started.
I say this because, for most of the day, appleseed.apple.com has been down when
I try to access it.

Re: turnig Voiceover on on the Apple Tv

2014-07-24 Thread Charlie Doremus
If VoiceOver becomes disabled on your Apple TV, you can use these steps to
enable VoiceOver again.
Press and hold the Menu button for five (5) seconds. This will return you to
the main menu screen of the Apple TV.
Press the Down button one time. This ensures that you are at the top-level of
the menu.
Press the Right button until you hear a Stop or "Bonk" sound; you are on the
Settings menu.
Press the Up button until you hear the Stop sound indicating you are at the
first menu item; this is the General menu.
Press the Select button.
Press the Down until you hear the Stop sound.
Press the Up button two times. You should be on the Accessibility menu.
Then press the Select button twice. This will select VoiceOver and enable it.
You should hear VoiceOver become active.

Aloha,

Re: osx 10 beta?

2014-07-24 Thread Daniel Chavez
Hi there,
The beta has been released.
Depending on when you signed up, you may, or may not, be able to participate in
the program, if you were not within the first million users.
An email will be sent stating that OSX beta is ready, then you sign into the
link that says to click here to get OSX Yosemite Beta, at least, that's what my
email said anyhow.
Once there, there should be a place to generate a code and download the
installer. Once the installer gets downloaded, or once at least the code is
generated, it's considered used, from what I'm understanding.

Re: osx 10 beta?

2014-07-24 Thread Alex Hall
Alternatively, sign into appleseed.apple.com, click Get Yosemite, and go from
there. If you were accepted into the program, you'll have the promo code. The
way I understand it, the code is like any other - once you use it, Yosemite
shows up in your purchases, and you can grab it whenever you want to. Of
course, Apple will probably pull it once the official version is released in a
few months, but until then you should be able to treat it like any other app.

future.

I've bought a 1 TB external hard drive, and I wanted to partition it
so that it has two different volumes. This is how I accomplished it in
Mac OS Lion.

I connected my USB drive to my mac.
1. Open Disk Utility (from the finder, shortcut key, command+shift+u),
and then start typing disk utility to get there.

2. In the table of all available disks, find the disk you wish to partition.

3. Stop interacting with the table of your disks and move to the right
through the available tabs until you've reached "partition" tab. Press
vo+space to select it.

4. Move right to hear "partition layout" popup button. Here yo you can
choose how many partitions you wish to have on your drive. In my case,
I chose two partitions.

5. Move to the right. You will encounter a field that Voiceover
reports as something like "name text field". At this stage this field
will be reported as dimmed which means that you cannot do anything
with it.

6. Move to the right and yo you will hear "scroll area". This is where
it gets interesting. Remember, I chose to partition my external drive
into two.

7. Interact with the scroll area. You will be able to navigate with
vo+arrow keys here, and you will hear: "untitled1 plus some info about
the value of the default size of the partition" and if you move right,
you will hear "horizontal splitter" and then, "untitled2" with the
value of the default size of the partition. At this point, you can't
do anything with these areas. However, in order to be able to name
your partitions, you have to do the following steps.

8. While still interacting with the scroll area, place your Voiceover
cursor on the first untitled area. If you have a mac that has a
trackpad which by default is enabled with Voiceover, first disabled
the trackpad commander with vo + rotor left. Voiceover will say
trackpad commander off. Then bring your ouse cursor to the Voiceover
cursor with vo+command+f5. Confirm with vo+f5 that you are on the
untitled1 field and then physically click the mouse/trackpad.

9. At this point, Disk Utility got busy for me and I had to force quit
it. To avoid this, after you had physically clicked the mouse pad,
turn Voiceover off and then on again (don't rush the process), and
then stop interacting with the scroll area and move left to the "name
text field".

10. You will notice, that now Voiceover announces "name text field" as
untitled1 and it is not dimmed so that yo you can enter the name of
your volume here.

11. After you are done with this partition, interact with the scroll
area again, only this time move to the "untitled2" and perform the
same actions here as you had done with "untitled1'. Then again, as
soon as you physically click the trackpad, turn Voiceover off, and
then turn it on again, and then stop interacting with the scroll area
and move to the left to the "name" field where you can now enter the
name of your second volume.

I hope this will help some people on the list who have been struggling
to partition their external drives.

With best regards

Andrew"

Well I never got the email but was able to get the beta since I signed
up virtually as soon as it was announced.Hi there,

The beta has been released.
Depending on when you signed up, you may, or may not, be able to
participate in the program, if you were not within the first million users.
An email will be sent stating that OSX beta is ready, then you sign into
the link that says to click here to get OSX Yosemite Beta, at least,
that's what my email said anyhow.
Once there, there should be a place to generate a code and download the
installer. Once the installer gets downloaded, or once at least the code
is generated, it's considered used, from what I'm understanding.
