Re: Latest version of Icab is broken!!! please help!!!

2014-04-22 Thread Piotr Machacz
Has this started happening only after you updated? If yes it just could be that
they dropped support for older versions of OS X. It might now require mountain
lion, or mavericks. Check the system requirements, and then either just update
your mac if you can, or try to find the older version and put it back in.

Hello Don,

Having located Mail in the table, stop interacting and navigate right and
uncheck the following check boxes: Show notifications on lock screen, Show
message preview, and Show in Notification Center:.

That should fix it.

Cheers,

Re: yet more regarding youtube

2014-04-22 Thread Chris Blouch
As to #3, not sure how Apple could fix Flash as Adobe has refused to
connect it to Apple's accessibility APIs. Instead, Adobe wants Apple to
implement the same API Windows uses so they don't have to do any more
work. Unsurprisingly Apple has not been to interested in implementing a
second accessibility API when they already have a perfectly good one.

However, I disagree that it is entirely Adobe's fault or that they haven't done
anything about flash accessibility.
1. Some flash, though unlabelled, is still accessible with JAWS on Windows.
2. Some flash on Adobe websites (Adobe Connect, for example) is implemented
surprisingly well. Everything is fully labelled and all controls are accessible
with JAWS on Windows. It is a little tricky as it uses custom keyboard
commands, but if you read Adobe's help documentation it works just as they say.
3. Of course flash is completely inaccessible with VoiceOver. This, however, is
as much if not more Apple's fault than Adobe's. I don't really blame Apple, as
the web would be better off with HTML5 and getting rid of flash, but it's still
hardly Adobe's fault. Apple could endeavour to make flash accessible with
VoiceOver in the meantime while we're waiting for wider adoption of HTML5.
4. Adobe developed flash to fulfil a need on the web. Although it was not
created with the blind community in mind, and is consequently a difficult type
of content to make accessible to blind people, Adobe has gone to efforts to
make flash accessible. The fact that many developers implementing flash don't
take advantage of these accessibility features is not entirely Adobe's fault.
5. It's a similar situation with PDFs. Adobe has greatly improved accessibility
of PDFs and provides great documentation explaining to PDF creators how to
create accessible PDFs. If sometimes publishers don't follow these guidelines,
again this is not Adobe's fault.

Re: Windows on a Mac

2014-04-22 Thread Chris Blouch
Unless you just have to have the absolute fastest performance I'd go the
VMWare route. The alternative (bootcamp) requires you to partition your
hard drive and then boot into Windows or OSX, so there really isn't any
integration. VMWare just runs a virtual machine in a window which means
you quit it when you don't need it and start it when you do. When
running you can copy/paste between the Mac and Windows and set up the
virtual machine to access files on your Mac desktop. The Windows disk
space defaults to be allocated on the fly so you can give Windows 250GB
but it will only use what you actually store on the Windows side.

this is what I use and a lot of others, too.

If you go the fusion route, you can switch back and forth between the
two os's without rebooting your physical mac. You can also file share
between the two so you don't have to have two copies of things.

Hi Joe,
Wow, lots to cover here!
I'll have a go at some of this and I know others will chime in..
Yes, 250 g is enough space for both operating systems. You can
partition your hard disk in any configuration you like.

I'd personally allow 2 g of ram for windows.
The alt and command keys are switched, but I think you might be able
to use something like key remapped, but I'm not sure about this.
For your cursor question, go into vo utility, and under the
navigation tab, you want to change the option for "vo speaks
caracters the cursor passes. I forget exactly what the option you
want is called..It might be something like, speak the character to
the right of the cursor or something like that.
I don't use boot camp, so unfortunately I can't answer boot camp
questions except to tell you that you *might* need sighted help to
set this up. there is a program out there now that some have used to
set up boot camp without sighted help, but this is way beyond my
knowledge.

questions:

1. How much RAM do you recommend?
2. Is 250 gigs sufficient to run both operating systems?
3. How much space should I devote to Windows using BootCamp?
4. Will the processor be relevant, or can I stick to whatever comes
standard with the MBA?
5. Can someone tell me what keys are used to replicate certain
Windows keys: Delete, Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down?

6. How proficient can one use JAWS under Windows in this arrangement?
7. As for OSX, I know there is a decent startup tour. Is there a free
book or free resource that would let me learn my way around the

8. How do I go about changing the verbosity setting to allow me to

.BrL Files Disappearing in louis

2014-04-22 Thread Teresa Cochran
hi, all,

Most of the time Louis works for me, but there's an rtf file I'm trying to
translate to brl format. I choose the file to translate, then the name of the
brl file, then go to the processing tab and choose translate. It gives me the
message that the file has been translated and the file path. I press ok and no
file. It doesn't seem to place a file anywhere. I've tried spotlight searching
on my mac.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
teresa

Sure, it's safe to download. You might have gotten a message not allowing it to
install, because of the high security setting in oS X. You can turn this off in
Safari or system preferences. In the meantime, you can go into the contextual
menu and choose "open".

Yes, it's free, but I don't think it allows you to test betas of major
versions, unfortunately. I do encourage people to do this as well, the more
testers that use accessibility features, the better.

MBraille

2014-04-22 Thread Brandon Olivares
Hello,

Does anyone here use MBraille on the IPhone? I just started using it, and
really like it so far.

I was hoping people might have some tips for using it. I have some trouble with
the table layout, because the layout of the dots is a bit weird. The away
layout is easier for me, but not as comfortable to hold.

I timed myself typing with MBraille and I was able to type at about 40 WPM,
which I think is pretty good as far as texting speeds are concerned.

I'm considering getting the pro version since it can interact with many other
apps, but not sure yet.

Re: Where to put Numbers Applescripts?

2014-04-22 Thread Nicholas Parsons
To my knowledge, it will never appear in the Services menu, as it is a script
not a service. You can enable the scripts menu from the "General" preference
pane of the AppleScript Editor utility. The scripts menu then appears in the
menu extras menu.
To have it appear in the scripts menu, place it in
/Library/Scripts/Applications/Numbers - I think there might be a better way
than this but at least this does work - I've tested it.
If you want to make it a service, just create a new Service with Automator,
drag in the Run AppleScript action and copy and paste my AppleScript into the
appropriate field. Then you can set a keyboard shortcut in System Preferences.
I use Keyboard Maestro to execute the script, but you could just as easily use
VoiceOver's Keyboard Commander.

Re: MBraille

2014-04-22 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi Brandon,

I use and love mBraille. Here are my tips:
Set it to always use "away" layout, table layout is only useful with the iPad,
and even then it's no where near as easy as away layout.
Turn tutorial mode off, this only seemed to make things difficult for me.
Get the pro version, it's definitely worth being able to text, email and Google
right from the app, though the fact that it automatically copies your text to
clipboard when you close the app is fantastic and makes it easy to use.
Even with the added delay of having to use a different app to type, I'm still
much faster with mBraille. It's an app I use all the time and really enhances
my iPhone.

Best,
Nic

Thanks, I enabled the scripts menu and the script, which I placed in
user/library/scripts/numbers, showed up as you said it would. I didn't have a
"applications" subfolder, but that doesn't seem to matter. Maybe for the sake
of organization it would be good for me to create it and place the Numbers
folder in it.

Re: Where to put Numbers Applescripts?

2014-04-22 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Yeah, I've been getting a little mixed up because for some reason things aren't
working as they should for me. Glad you got it sorted though. FYI, following is
the link to the Apple Support page on enabling and using the scripts menu with
iWork applications:
http://www.iworkautomation.com/script-menu.html

They say to create the applications folder. Not sure if it's just for
organisation, or if it has something to do with making sure only the scripts
for the front most application are visible.

In my scripts menu, none of the scripts from the ~/Library/Scripts folder are
shown. Only the computer scripts.

App switching still takes too long when using activities

2014-04-22 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
Someone recently told me that low verbosity in Mail eliminates the "disclosure
triangle" and other annoying announcements. It does indeed, so i set up an
activity to set low verbosity in Mail. I tried activities a couple years ago,
but they caused switching to and from apps to go really slow, as in at least
five seconds from pressing cmd-tab to being able to use the app. Since then
we've had two OS updates, and I went from 2gb to 8gb of ram, so i figured I'd
be all set... Nope. It takes just as long today as it did two years ago. Is
there anything i can do to fix this problem? Is this universal, or do only some
people experience it? Thanks.

Hello Alex,

How are you switching between apps and does your Mail activity kick in when you
switch to mail?

I have a Mail activity with low verbosity and switching is immediate using
Cmd-Tab. I have a MacBook Air 11-inches with 8 gb of RAM.

Cheers,
