Re: Accessible sound editing or sequencsing software on the Mac question
Well, I have to be honest about Sound Forge. While basic editing works, so I am informed, and while it is possible to manipulate the sliders for effects such as noise reduction and so forth, presets remain an issue: and, it's impossible to split a file in to regions for burning to a CD. Now, bear in mind that this is what I'm told and my source has not come out and mentioned any improvements to the accessibility. Seems to me that, so far, Amadeus Pro, (now available directly from the app store and thus not needing a license) is the best audio for the Mac I have yet to hear of. Sent from my Mac, the only computer with full accessibility for the blind built-in! Sincerely, The Constantly Barefooted Ray, still a very happy Mac and Iphone 5 user! Re: switching back to windows.
Tim, I feel that is exactly the most important point. Computer choices are totally and completely individual, as they should be. Any suggestion that one method or means works for anyone but yourself suggests that there is no individual human differences which is simply untrue. The sooner people stop suggesting that stereotypes translate into reality for everyone. Respect that the first question should always be how will this work for my personal needs? and that individual encouraged to express their individual choice without fear of condemnation by a collective and nonexistent community, the easier it will be for others to respect your uniqueness. There are no two people who experience anything, including sight loss the same. Time to respect this persons choices, he said personal, owning that they apply to him alone. Just as your seasoning applies only to you. certainly you can share how you managed a problem, but no one should ever think that their choices to do it differently is somehow less than sensational...for them. Re: switching back to windows.
Man! you just knew this would get a thread going. Personally, I use both Mac and Windows in a VM, both have their attractions and strong points. I don't like the rather screwy accessibility breakage I'm seeing on the Mac, and I also don't like microsofts changing interfaces (e.g.. windows7 to window 8). I have no loyalty to either brand, brand loyalty is just plain foolish in my opinion. life is getting too short to look for and expect perfection anywhere. I'll use whatever works at the moment without worrying too much about what doesn't. Re: switching back to windows.
I was struck by the number of comments from people who said they based their decisions to stick with Windows solely on his article. It was a very fair article, although some of the points are just wrong, such as iBooks being as inaccessible as he thinks. Anyhow, I wouldn't base my decision to do anything on just one person's experience. It was interesting to read, but I'll stick with what I have. I like it well enough, and as long as Apple commits to accessibility, I'll vote with my wallet. Pure and simple for me. Re: Mac Mail Syncing Issues With Accounts Other Than Gmail
Hello, COX iMAP? I tried to find a way to do that 3 years ago and gave up. The Techs had no idea what I was talking about and there were no references in the support pages that I could find. I would use my COX account again if I could get IMAP to work and also get mail filtering on the server. Please give me parameters and instructions! Re: Is there a way to spell check epub books.
Well, any application that uses Macintoshes standard text editing suite has access to the standard spell checker routines. So unless a ePub editor goes out of its way to turn off this functionality it should be there. What might work is to use Pages and then export to ePUB. It would probably be a good idea to add some markup like section breaks and Headings and I believe that Apple has a free ePub creator that only works with iBooks. Re: switching back to windows.
The same here. Each to there own person what works for one may not work another and vice verser. I can't remember all the details but there was one thing that certainly struck with me and that is the artical says that he has to use the VO keys and at times it can be cumberson and I agree in part. However, what he didn't mention is that it is possible to make the VO keys act as the caps-lock key through the use of a couple of downloaded utilities and an article that I followed from applevis to help me get this done. Since doing this I haven't looked back I use both the VO keys and the caps-lock interchangeably and I must admit personally I prefer the caps lock method but there you go. The point being that I don't think he knew of the knowledge which is fair enough. This is just one that struck a chord with me so to speak about the article that I wanted to point out to others here. Finally, to end on a happy note, all who use different platforms whatever they may maybe, may they serve you well and accomplish whatever job or desire you seek to perform in this time of tablet/computing age! If it's in your purchase list, it will have a download button. If you uninstall it on your Mac, you can just press the download button and it will download it again. This download button will only show up if you have already purchased the item, so there's no danger of having to buy it again. You may have to sign in, but you won't have to re-purchase. Re: switching back to windows.
For me, it's simple. I have a laptop running Windows 7, and my Macbook Pro. I accomplish most tasks using the Mac. I accomplish others using Windows. I do this because I find them easier to manage in Windows. I'm fortunate enough to be able to do both without installing Windows on my Mac, which I have no desire to do. I love my Mac, and for some tasks, I love Windows. Life is about choices, and I'm happy with the ones I've made. How do you back up contacts, bookmarks and calendar on the mac using Mountain Lion? I have an external Hard drive I want to back up my files too. Are their settings files that I can also back up? For some things I have read I need to go to library and safari for backing up bookmarks but I cannot find a safari folder? Thanks for your help. The age old question of which braille display to get
Hello listers. I am trying to decide what braille display to get. I am going to get at least a 40 but am considering an 80. My main question to you is, those of you that use your displays for work, which is better? Can I use a 40 productively, or would I be better off with an 80? Next is the question about connectivity. I currently have all Apple products, but know that when I finally find an employer that will give me a chance, I will most likely will ,e using Windows and probably JAWS. Which display will keep my hands on the display more and reduce the amount of time going back and forth between display and keyboard? If I end up going with a 40 cell display, which one works more seamlessly with the iPhone, and MacBook Pro? Is there a display that can be paired with more than one device? Like with my Refreshabraille, I have to make sure my iPad is turned off if I want to use it with my iPhone, or I have to tell one device to forget it before I can use it with the other. Which displays can be supported and repaired in the United States? Is Freedom Scintific's maintenance agreement worth the price and worth choosing a Focus even if it isn't your favorite just to have the agreement? Here are the displays that I am considering I currently use a Refreshabraille and like the feel of the dots, like the keyboard, and like the joystick. With that in mind with all the other comments and concerns, which display would be a better fit for me? Brailliant BI VarioConnect Braille edge Focus Active Braille Feel free to make any other recommendations if I haven't listed one that you think would be a good fit. I am trying to get my hands on some of these but may not be able to get my hands on all of them. I have been reading a lot of archived messages and looking at sites where they are sold, but I still ckn't figure out which will be the best fit. Unfortunately people don't go to sites and give feedback. I really haven't found a lot of reviews online or on youtube. Any and all help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Re: switching back to windows.
I agree with everyone here. I feel right now my Mac is more productive. Why? When I lost my vision, I just went to the Mac first. I am now learning how to use Windows 7 with NVDA. But I know my Mac so I feel the Mac is better, and that is just due to I know and what to expect. But, from what I see from everyone, there are things you can do on a Mac, or Windows, or even on a Linux, that you can't do for others. So each to his own. As a future adaptive technology trainer, I am trying to learn all platforms and have an open mind. But, I do have to admit, I am kinda loyal to Apple, lol. But, I do agree with the blogs ideas how the Mac is frustrating. A lot of things he stated, I have found a workaround, and I am quite happy with this setup. So having VM Fusion, with Windows, and Linux would be the most productive of all. Re: how do you back up contacts, bookmarks and calendar?
There are a few choices. 1. Use TimeMachine. 2. Backup the appropriate directories in ~/Library. 3. In at least Contacts/Adress book and Safari there are export commands. This is also available in Calendar on Mavericks so iCal probably has this feature too. 4. Use iCloud (just trust it) it will keep all this information in sync on all your devices unless you delete it all. Your choices are: Focus40Blue from FreedomScientific Brailliant BI40 from HumanWare BrailleEdge from HIMS which is a 40cell display with notetaking functionality. Hope this helps. Re: booting up from a CD
The link pasted below to a discussion thread might help you track down some answers. Apparently Windows boxes use BIOS and Macs use EFI firmware for bootstrapping the machine. So while the Linux bases are nearly identical, the bootup process is different and you'll need to have an EFI-based booter to make things go. Most distributions assume a BIOS-based box. http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/34117/why-wont-my-macbook-pro-boot-from-a-linux-live-cd CB On 2/22/14 10:43 PM, Daniel Hawkins wrote: Hmm, thanks for letting me know. Under the Startup menu I don't see the bootable cd, but yet that cd does work on a Windows PC, so I know the cd is bootable. I have seen the guide how to make a bootable flashdrive, but I am not sure the program that you are to use on the Mac is accessable, and it involves command line use. That is over my head lol. But now, when I try to boot from the cd, by pressing C, there issomething on the screen if I turn off the lights, but nothing happens. Vinux should start talking when it starts up, so now I think the bootable cd is now working, I just need to find a sighted person. Thanks! Disk Utility will not assist you with the boot-ability of your CD. Your absolute best method is to go into the System Preferences, press on Startup Disks and see if the CD that you hope to boot from is listed there. If it is, VO-space on it then navigate over to the Restart button. If it's not there, then your CD is not bootable by your Mac. Holding down the Option key at startup will only give you the list of possible Startup Disks that this pane gives you while in System Preferences, with the added issue that it is not accessible. For the most part, the Option key method is only useful to you once you know that something is bootable. There are a number of reasons why it may not boot with your Mac including disk format, external vs internal device etc. Here's an article on creating a bootable USB drive that may assist you in this endeavour. http://www.techusers.net/6/how-create-linux-bootable-usb-drive-mac-osx-using-dd-command HTH. I can do this on a different computer that have CD drive first to boot before the Harddrive. Also in Disk Utility there is nothing about a disk other than the Mactintosh HD and Bootcamp. So, I am stumped here, I was thinking about holding the Options key at startup, but I have Bootcamp with Windows 7 already installed. I know there are three options to choose from other than the Super drive. The thing is which option is the CD drive? Have anyone else successfuly booted a Linux cd on a Macbook Pro? Re: The age old question of which braille display to get
Hi Amy, Another braille display that I would consider is the alva BC640. It has all the features that you've been looking for, but will also work with two devices. I use an alva with my iPhone, and it also works with the Mac as well. On Feb 23, 2014, at 8:07 PM, Aimee Harwood wrote: > Hello listers. I am trying to decide what braille display to get. I hardly ever have this problem and I use Groups mode in Safari most of the time. Could it be related to having the mouse follow the other cursors? I never do this.
