How does conversation threading work on the Mac?

2014-02-20 Thread Daniel McGee
Hello all, for those who use it. How do you use conversation threading on the
Mac with Mail?
Previously, I was using the standard view with Mail where all messages come in
at once and arrowing up to hear each one with the preview pain turned on. I
have also messed around with the classic view of mail but didn't really like
that much because I found at times I was losing my place when I get a lot of
messages e.g. from this list. So have switched back to the standard view.
Now though, I'd like to have a go at conversation threading and for those who
use it could you tell me how it works and more importantly how effectively you
can use it with Voiceover.

Many thanks

Daniel

Re: How does conversation threading work on the Mac?

2014-02-20 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Works real well. Just have mail orgnaize messages by conversation. Then, when
you come across a thread of messages, you will be informed how many messages
there are. To actually open the conversation, use the right arrow key alone.
Now, you can move down message by message. To close the conversation, use the
left arrow. Then, when you press the delete key, you take out all messages in
that conversation.

built-in!

Re: making a playlist and adding to it in Itunes

2014-02-20 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I'm not sure if I can honestly say what is the easiest but if you're navigating
through your Songs list, press VO-cmd-return to select each song you want in
that playlist if they are non-contiguous. Once you have all the songs you want
in the list, press cmd-shift-n to create the playlist from the selected items.
You can then name the playlist whatever you wish. If you need to add songs to
that playlist after the fact, simply navigate to the song, press VO-shift-m on
it, choose Add to Playlist and select which playlist you want it added to.

HTH.

Re: What software do people use to record podcasts?

2014-02-20 Thread Mike
As long as you don't have version 10 of GarageBand you can use it to record.
Personally I recommend audio hijack Pro. It has lots of different things that
it can do and it's really easy to use.
You can download it for free and record up to 10 minutes but you have to buy a
license for anything longer than that. It's about $32 if I remember correctly.
Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hi,

For me, when coming upon a conversation, I press return on it, which opens the
entire conversation and the first message in the conversation will start being
read by VO. I Stop Interacting with the message, then I can go VO-right or
VO-left reading each of the messages in the thread. I can press the Delete key
to remove the message I'm reading and can press cmd-w to close the entire
thread and again press the Delete key to remove the whole thread of messages.

I'm a long-time Sound Forge user so that colors my experience quite a bit. :)

Zoomtext and Voice Over on the Mac

2014-02-20 Thread Jenine Stanley
OK, final question for me on this topic of using screen enlargement with VO. Is
anyone using ZoomText for Mac? If so, does it work in conjunction with VO? If
not, do you use speech at all with it and if so, how?

Thanks.

Re: Zoomtext and Voice Over on the Mac

2014-02-20 Thread Terje Strømberg
ZoomText Mac has better font smoothing so the text is clearer. Command + tab
works much better with ZoomText and Voice Over. ZoomText follows the Voice Over
marker quite well, but not in all tables and websites, but pretty good. In this
regard the built in Zooms may be better except for Command + tab. Quite easy to
set up Zoom Text preferences. If you want the physical mouse to speak while
moving on letters, you have to set this up in Voice Over utilities.

Download a trial and you should have at least 30+ days to get familiar with it.

Take care

Re: buying ibooks on itnues

2014-02-20 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Dionipher,

We can only buy books from the iTune Store of the country we live in. It has
something to do with copyright, I think. This is why I rarely buy books from
the iBooks store as I live in France but prefer to read in English, my native
language. I use Kindle and Kobo for my English-language books. I can only read
kindle books on my iPhone, but Kobo books can be read on the Mac with Adobe
Digital Editions.

Cheers,

Anne

OT: Is anyone having difficulty signing into bookshare?

2014-02-20 Thread Christine Grassman
After an initial successful sign-in on my MacBook, I went back to the site some
time later and it asked for my password. I have tried multiple times, and I am
positive the password is correct, but it keeps returning to the log-in screen
with the message "Sorry, an error has occurred."
I tried clearing my history, but this did not work. I have written to
Bookshare support, but past experience is that I will not hear from them for
some time. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Re: How does conversation threading work on the Mac?

2014-02-20 Thread Daniel McGee
Hi guys, I am using the method that Tim has described and so far it looks
pretty cool but for me there's just one problem with the way Voiceover is
presenting it.
When I have stopped interacting with the message after opening it with the
enter key and VO right or left depending on where I'm in the conversation VO is
saying "embedded" a lot and it repeats the sender of the message and there
email address.
Anyway I can get rid of this extra verbiage?

Thanks

Hello all, for those who use it. How do you use conversation threading on
 the Mac with Mail?
Previously, I was using the standard view with Mail where all messages
come in at once and arrowing up to hear each one with the preview pain
turned on. I have also messed around with the classic view of mail but
didn't really like that much because I found at times I was losing my
place when I get a lot of messages e.g. from this list. So have switched
 back to the standard view.
Now though, I'd like to have a go at conversation threading and for those
who use it could you tell me how it works and more importantly how
effectively you can use it with Voiceover.

 Many thanks

 Daniel

Re: preview pane?

2014-02-20 Thread Caitlyn and Maggie
Reggie,
You just hit enter on a message when you want to read it. After you read it,
you can then hit delete or use command w to close the message and then do with
it as you like.

As for getting rid of it, there are several ways.
I am using a script, but others are having problems with this same apple script.

One way to get rid of the preveiw pane is to find the horizontal splitter in
your messages table. Interact with the splitter, bring the mouse to it with vo
shift f5, then I think you have to drag your finger down on the track pad,
making sure the vo part of the track pad is turned off. You turn off the track
pad commander by doing vo and turning your fingers like a dial, like on the i
phone. vo will say track pad commander on or off, depending.

You will know if the pane is gone because then you will have to hit enter on a
message to read it, instead of using vo j.

Windows 7 64 bit won't recognize Enabling Phoenix Embosser on my Mac

2014-02-20 Thread Ibraheem Fakir
Dear List,

Recently, I've tried to use an Enabling Phoenix embosser with my Macbook which
is equipped with fusion version 5 and Windows 7 64 bit.
I have the printer settings set to generic text but Windows doesn't recognize
the embosser when I try to emboss. I'm using Duxbury 11.1 as my braille
translator. Has anyone had success embossing with Fusion and Windows 7 off a
Mac? Do you know if I could be missing something here? I tried embossing with a
friend's Windows laptop and it worked, but with my Macbook I have no success?
Can anyone think of a work around?

Thank you for your time and energy.

all best,
Ibraheem

Re: Changing from Gmail to iCloud

2014-02-20 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I have a couple of questions about this.

1. I could leave my gmail account open if I do this and use forwarding through
icloud and keep my gmail address as my Apple ID. If I really wanted to
eventually get rid of gmail, is there a way to change Apple ID that then would
put all of my purchases under the icloud apple id or would I always be having
to sign in with the old gmail id to get those purchases?

2. I found an article that talks about copying your email to cloud folders
(probably talks about copying instead of moving so you don't make a mistake and
then find your mail is gone forever!), then getting what is left in All Mail,
and it talks about going into gmail and making sure your emails only have one
label so you don't get duplicates. Is that still relevant advice and if so, how
do you go about checking on the labels or should one just leave it alone and
let there be duplicates though it would be better not to have them. Here is the
article I found at Lifehacker; it is from 2011.

Article from Lifehacker
You can start fresh with your new iCloud account, but maybe you want access to
your email archives all in one place. In that case, you'll have to migrate your
current Gmail inbox over. It isn't the quickest process, but we've found that
plugging both accounts into an IMAP program--like Apple's Mail--makes it fairly
straightforward. Just make sure you follow the instructions below to the
letter. Read through them first, so you understand what you're doing, and then
go through each step, one by one. If you make a mistake, you could severely
confuse your iCloud inbox and have to start over. Here's what you'll want to
do:P

* First, set up both Gmail and iCloud in Mail.app. Setting up Gmail is
easy, and creating a new iCloud email address is as simple as going into System
Preferences > iCloud, signing in with your Apple ID, and creating a new Mail
account. It should show up in Mail when you're done.
* Let Mail download all your messages. You'll see all your Gmail labels
set up as folders. Note that iCloud doesn't use labels like Gmail does, so
you'll need to go into Gmail and make sure all of your messages are assigned
only one label--otherwise, you'll get duplicate messages in your iCloud account.
* When you're ready to migrate, head into Mail.app and click on Gmail's
"Sent Messages" folder. Go to Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For > Sent. Repeat
this process with the Deleted Messages folder as well.
* Now, you're ready to start moving messages over. Start with the
inbox. Go to Gmail's inbox in Mail.app and select all the messages within.
Right-click on them and hit Copy To > Inbox > iCloud. This should copy all
those messages over to iCloud's inbox. Do not drag and drop the messages; that
will remove them from Gmail, which we do not want yet.
* Repeat this process for each of your user-created folders--that is,
all your Gmail "labels" except All Mail, Important, Starred, and Spam. Create a
new folder on the iCloud account (by right-clicking on the iCloud inbox and
hitting "New Mailbox), click on the corresponding folder from your Gmail
account, select all the messages, and copy them to the new iCloud folder. Be
sure to copy over all your sent messages, too, even though they're a
Gmail-created folder! Note that if one of your folders is particularly big, you
may run into some errors when copying messages. If you get an error, delete all
the messages in the iCloud folder you're trying to fill and try the copy again.
After another try or two, it should work.
* When you're done, you should have a good portion of your messages
migrated to the iCloud account. The only messages missing will be the ones that
didn't have a label, and weren't in your inbox or sent messages folder. To
migrate these, we'll need to delete everything we've migrated so far, and move
them from the "All Mail" folder into a new "Archive" folder in iCloud. So, go
back to your Sent Messages, Inbox, and other user-created labels and delete all
those messages--using the Mail.app interface--from your Gmail account.
* Lastly, copy everything from the All Mail folder in to iClouds
Archive folder, as you did with the other folders. When you're done, your inbox
should look just like it did in Gmail, and you're ready to start using iCloud
Mail.
If you want to undelete those messages from your Gmail account just in case,
you can head to the Gmail web interface, select all the messages in your Trash,
and move them to your inbox. Then, re-archive them all in case you want to move
back to Gmail later

Thanks.

Re: How does conversation threading work on the Mac?

2014-02-20 Thread Steve Holmes
I also like this method of quickly going through a series of messages
in a thread. Only problem I have from time to time is when people have
images attached to their messages. It breaks my rhythm because I then
have to interact extra times in order to get back into the message
itself. I always get messed up when I run into these; I end up having
to go back out to the message list, expand the thread as previously
described here, and read the messages one by one. Is there a quicker
way to get around these included images? I forget the exact wording
but I think it depends on how some people are sending their messages
out.

Then, when you come across a thread of messages, you will be informed
how many messages there are. To actually open the conversation, use the
right arrow key alone. Now, you can move down message by message. To
close the conversation, use the left arrow. Then, when you press the
delete key, you take out all messages in that conversation.

the case in gmail using rules there. Is iCloud just not as good as gmail is at

Re: Changing from Gmail to iCloud

2014-02-20 Thread Brian Fischler
Hi Cheryl,

I have been doing this over the last few days, and here is what I have
discovered hopefully it helps.

I think it is best if you are having serious gmail issues with mac mail like I
was having to remove gmail from your computer, go to gmail and set up all your
gmail messages to forward to your iCloud account.

As far as changing your Apple ID log in from a gmail to your iCloud account,
not sure if that can be done, someone else might be able to answer, for some
reason I think I recall reading that you cannot change your Apple ID log in but
don't quote me. If you find out other please do let us know.

Migrating your emails over is very easy, here is what I did and it worked with
a few thousand emails.

I created the same named folder in iCloud went to the old mailbox in mac mail
did a select all in the folder to select all the messages and used the
contextual menu to move everything. Careful not to do it to quick as I would
suggest giving your new mailbox in iCloud time to populate if you want to make
sure you don't lose anything. Once you see the emails are in the new folder you
can delete the old mailbox under gmail. I only had a problem with one folder
doing this, and although I did this over a few days, it was pretty quick. Moved
about 20 folders of stuff.

You then can save the messages the same way you did in gmail but it will be
saving to your iCloud account.

Hope this helps.

Re: Changing from Gmail to iCloud

2014-02-20 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Cheryl,

According to Apple, you are totally able to change the eMail address associated
with your Apple ID. To see details, visit:

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5621

The main thing to note in here is the conditions up front. One of them being
that it can't be an iCloud account as the iCloud account is actually already an
Apple ID.

Hi ,
You can also keep the old Apple ID but change the primary email associated with
it. This is what I have done. I've kept my old Apple ID but changed the email
address. A bit less hassle to change an Apple ID on all devices, and the emails
still come through to your new active email address.

I'd grabbed Amadeus Lite to see what it was like and I think I need the Pro

quite work on my version of Amadeus Lite.

I'm still looking for anyone using MicroWave. I've written to the developer

Re: Windows 7 64 bit won't recognize Enabling Phoenix Embosser on my Mac

2014-02-20 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello,

I'm in the process of setting up bootcamp with Win 8. I have a Juliette Pro 60,
which I needed to use a Serial to USB adaptor on my Dell laptop. I am just
wondering if you are using an adaptor to connect the embosser to the Mac. I
needed to set up a new printer as gerneric on my PC. Also, in Duxbury (if
that's your translator software) you need to go into the global settings and
select print to the gerneric printer. If you need more specific settings, you
can contact me off list and I will look all it up, so I don't miss a beat in
giving you all of the correct settings.

Re: OT: Is anyone having difficulty signing into bookshare?

2014-02-20 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello,

I just used Safari and logged into Bookshare with my user email and password.
It took 2 attempts, but it did work on the second time. I am using a MBA 2013
edition with the OS of Mountain Lion. I only give you my specs to see if there
is a difference in what you are using with your MacBook. HTH.

Re: Changing from Gmail to iCloud

2014-02-20 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Thanks.

Actually I'm not at the moment having great issues with gmail; I left Mavericks
on my iPad Air but went back to Mountain lion on my iMac and am mostly doing
email there. But I still would like to change to icloud. I have alreadyu copied
messages from one folder into one made under iCloud (used copy in the context
menu instead of move) just to make sure they really did show up in iCloud. This
won't be hard and i'm going to move the rest but I was concerned about ending
up with duplicate messages - better a message be duplicated than than it be
gone though :-)

Yes. You can't have your iCloud address replace an email address that's

Blue tooth headset

2014-02-20 Thread Christina C.
I hope I don't sound too incredibly stupid but I am shopping for a bluetooth
headset and I am quite lost.

Is there a list somewhere of blind friendly bluetooth headphones/headsets that
are compatible with iOS devices and macs?

Also, If I happen to use a headset that does not work with VO on my iPhone will
VO still have sound output from the speaker on my iPhone but just not on the
headphones? Or will the voiceover be completely mute to me?

I am on the hunt for a super easy to use headset that will pair very easily
where maybe I don't have to type in a code to pair it all the time because I
would like a headset that I can use with several devices. Like my Mac, my
iPhone and a bluetooth transmitter I am going to purchase that I can stick in
the headphone jack for various audio devices in my home. It would be great if
it could pair automatically, if that feature even exists. :)

Thanks for any help pointing me in the right direction.

There are also audible tones that will let you know when it is connecting or

Hope that helps.

Box Sync bogs down menu extras.

2014-02-20 Thread Daniel Hawkins
Hello everyone!

Recently about a month ago I have installed a cloud storage service called Box
Sync, I took advantage of their offer of 50 gb. At the time I have installed
it, it was very accessable. But lately for the past two weeks I have noticed
that my menu extras is very very slow, it would take me 5 min to just check the
battery. I narrowed it down to Box. Once I quit the app, menu extras runs just
fine. I was wondering if anyone have tried this and have the same problem?

Thanks!

2014-02-20 Thread Alex Hall
The ideas of selecting tracks, the two different cursors, what resets what
cursor, that kind of thing. It takes getting used to, but once it clicks, it's
rather easy to use. There are one or two things that don't work as easily as
I'd like, such as adjusting one track to start at a certain point relative to
another, but even that can be done.

Re: Accessible Lync Conference Software for the Mac?

2014-02-20 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
Yes, spell check got in the way there.

For small offices Microsoft offers Office 365 which provides Mail, Lync, Word 1
Note, Sharepoint.

When I went back to look it said log into the portal and then go to the
downloads site to download your copy.

My Office uses Lync fairly extensively on the Windows side, but the support
tecs for Macintosh are close by. I'll try and ask them to turn on Voice Over
with Lync and see what happens.

Lync does have a lot of the functionality of Skype, though it is designed to
keep everything flowing through the corporate systems instead of General use
systems.

Hello, though I have not tried it, I would assume that it would work
perfectly as well.

After all, plantronics is a company that manufactures headsets for lots
of

equipment including PABX.

Hello there,

I have tried several headphones. The best is still the Plantronics. The
good poins are:

1. There is a voice to tell you the amount of time you can talk,
2. Also tells you to which phone it is connected to. I think you can
connect to 2 phones.
3. When there is an incoming call, you answer the call with your voice.
The two words are either "answer or Ignore" Therefore, it is really hands
free.
4. The ear piece does not enter your ear, it just sits on the outside
of your ear.

Hope it helps.

Moses.

Hi Christina,

I've had very good luck with the Arctic p311 headset . It can pair
automatically.
There are also audible tones that will let you know when it is connecting
or
when the battery is too low.
Hope that helps.

Re: Blue tooth headset

2014-02-20 Thread David Chittenden
Well, there are several factors to consider.

First, the headset must support the A2DP (AADP) profile. This profile is the
stereo music channel, so almost all stereo bluetooth headsets support it. If
the headset states it plays music, whether single ear or both ears, it most
probably supports A2DP. When shopping online, check the tech specs to be
certain. No brands support A2DP profile across their entire line. Usually, the
more expensive bluetooth earpieces and headsets support A2DP.

Are you looking for a single earpiece or a stereo headset. The single earpiece
is more likely to not support A2DP. If A2DP is supported, VO will automatically
work through the headset. If not supported, VO will only come through the
headset during a call. Otherwise, VO will speak through the device speaker,
just as it does currently.

If you want two-device simeltaneous support, the Motorola elite series,
Motorola H17TXT and H19TXT, and the PlanTronics Legend, all support this. Also,
all of these headsets are one ear, and have spoken prompts and announcements.

Most modern headsets are able to auto-pair when selected in the phone so one
does not need to enter a four digit pin.

Playing DVD's on the Mac

2014-02-20 Thread Deb Lewis
Hi:
I have a DVD I would like to play. It has five parts.
When I loaded it into my Mac I found the Play button but nothing happens. I
actually got the first part to play once, but that's about it and never any of
the second part etc.
So I loaded it into VLC. I turned off the DVD menu because I read that
somewhere and I could see the play again, but only the first chapter plays once
again. And the audio was very choppy like the dVD was damaged which it is not.
So I downloaded dVD Extractor. I've used that on windows and it's accessible
there to both play and rip the audio. On the mac none of the buttons were
labeled but the hints gave me clues if those clues are to be believed. I can
play the first chapter, and of course can't play any of the subsequent ones.
Same when i go to extract the audio, it doesn't extract any other than the
first chapter or give me the option to do so.
So is this about copyright or something or is there something i'm doing wrong?
I can see or rip all the chapters in windows, but can't play or rip any on the
Mac no matter what I do so far.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Is it possible to check which parts of my Facebook page are public?

2014-02-20 Thread Teresa Cochran
Yes, go to your profile page. I do all of this by doing a VO search, so I can't
tell you where it is on the page. Search for timeline until you find a link for
it and follow it. on the resulting page, search for "view as" till you come to
"view as menu" and click that. Here you'll have your page as the public would
see it.
