Not go to sleep

Hi

In system preferences, save current, i have chosen to "never" go to sleep and
the screen "never" to go to sleep. Still…..it goes to sleep every 15 minutes or
so. Any suggestion for a fix?

Setting the computer and screen to go to sleep every 3 our don't help either.
Goes to sleep anyway.

Have heard Voice Over mention something about saving current in Safari. Some
kind of Safari saving current app, but can't find anything about this in Safari.

Re: renaming my home folder

2013-12-23 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello,

Why would you do that? Perhaps you should read this:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1428?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

You should create a new account with the name you desire. It would be a good
idea to read up before trashing an OS.

Re: cannot open disclosure triangles to view conversations in mail

2013-12-23 Thread Alex Hall
One thing I find works is to turn VO off, right arrow until the message opens
(try moving up and down to re-focus on the conversation if necessary) and then
turn VO back on. This rarely happens to me, but doing the above always fixes it
and is much easier than a restart.

Re: iMud has been submitted to the mac app store

2013-12-23 Thread Tyler Thompson
Rest assured I have MSP (Mud Sound Protocol) support and I have worked with
developers from many popular MUDs to make the client as great as possible. The
$5 is a one time payment, there are no in-app purchases or special costs for
upgrades to the client.

Don’t overestimate the client, it won’t be as good as some of the windows
clients that have been around for years on it’s release date. It is however
already the only truly accessible client I’ve seen for OSX and I will continue
to work to make it better as time goes on.

Reading iBooks on the mac using braille display

2013-12-23 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Listers,

I have a usb braille display, focus 40 which I connect to my macbook air. It’s
quite old - I bought it in 2004. I was wondering whether it would be possible
to read iBooks I purchase from iBooks store via iTunes using this Braille
display. If so, how would I go about it? I know I can’t use it with the iPad or
iPhone because it has no bluetooth. But I wonder whether I could use it to read
iBooks on my macbook air. Also, I’ve been trying to locate my iBooks on the
hard drive. I can’t find the folder where they would have been stored. I know
that music and audiobooks are stored in the iTunes media folder but my iBooks
are not there. Any ideas?

Thanks for any tips.

Andrew

Re: iMud has been submitted to the mac app store

2013-12-23 Thread Tyler Thompson
I’ve considered it but post-release it’s much easier to have it automatically
update through the app store than trying to authenticate versions with a server
and prompt the user to update constantly. Then having to deal with feedback
from different versions etc… It’s still on the “maybe” list but the issue they
found with the client is minor and already fixed, so we will see.

Yes, if your're using Mavericks, go to Energy saver in system preferences
energy saver. Uncheck the box that says "put hard disks to sleep when
possible. Also, move the slider to "never".

Goes to sleep anyway.

Have heard Voice Over mention something about saving current in Safari. Some
kind of Safari saving current app, but can't find anything about this in Safari.

VO-backslash will open disclosure triangles when VO is focused on them.
Also, you can do the VO-mouse-click (VO-shift-space) or VO-space to have

I know that they place several restrictions on what you can and cannot
do to have your app in the app store. I've also read that some

restrictions did not cause you too many problems though.

Re: Personal hot spot

2013-12-23 Thread Eugenia Firth
OOkay, let me see if I can remember it all. What you get it set up it's simple
as pie. First, turn Wi-Fi on on your iPhone. Then turn Bluetooth on. Then go to
personal hotspot and ?settings, you will notice several choices after you've
turned it on. One of the choices is Wi-Fi, and that's the one I did. Now there
is this horrible code you have to put in to your Mac. It is on your iPhone
screen and you have to do it character by character.

Go in to the extras menu with the voiceover keys and the letter M twice. Then
VO left or right arrow until you get to Wi-Fi. Press the VO space on that. Then
you have to go down until your Mac says Owner's iPhone and choose that. Then
you have to get the choices and type in that awful code. From now on you have a
network that says Owner's iPhone so that if you don't Internet Wi-Fi your
iPhone can let you use your cellular data minutes. I have a lot of them so it's
not a problem. Now you can use Safari on your computer and send emails on your
computer. You ask why can't you just use your iPho"? Well, if you have some
files to attach like I did you can use your to send them just like any other

Amazon cloud player seems to be useless on the mac now.

2013-12-23 Thread Jessica Moss
I've just downloaded the latest amazon cloud player, only to find it completely
enaccessible, which is really upsetting to me, sense I love the IPhone version,
but need the mac version, sense I'm wanting to burn an album I just downloaded
to a CD, and can't seem to be able to do a thing with it. Has anyone else had
this issue?

Opera on Mavericks

2013-12-23 Thread Lee Jones
Dear List has anybody had success with opera browser with voice over on
mavericks? I downloaded it to try out the ap store, but it makes weird
clicking noises and doesn't seem to work that well. I am a novice so it
would be good to no whether it is supposed to work or not, so I can delete
it if it doesn't.

Many Thanks, Lee

Re: Amazon cloud player seems to be useless on the mac now.

2013-12-23 Thread Teresa Cochran
I was just going to post about this myself. I am wondering if only the
login screen isn't accessible and maybe the rest of it is? I may enlist my
hubby to help me sign in and find out. The web version is still available,
but I realize that doesn't help you with your CD burning issue.

2013-12-23 Thread Jessica Moss
So far I can't get any part of it to work; it just says "amazon cloud player
window,".when I press VO+right or left arrow and it says nothing else other
than the usual options to change the screen size.

Re: a question about zoom in Mavericks

2013-12-23 Thread Pete Nalda
Ok. Cmd+opt+8 will not work in the login screen, BUT, if you have engaged in
finder, using cmd+opt+8, or in the system preferences, you can activate it in
the login screen using ctrl plus a 2 finger swipe up. it’s the only way to
engage it there.

Bookmarks Not Saving in Safari

2013-12-23 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey all,

Is anyone else having this problem. I am running Mountain Lion and the latest
update to safari which came out yesterday. I just noticed the last several
bookmarks I saved over the past couple of weeks haven't saved to my bookmarks.
I save everything using Command D and make sure bookmarks menu is selected in
the pop up, and just even tried saving a bookmark and it didn't save. Strange,
as this method has worked fine for years.

can't share my library on the network

2013-12-23 Thread Agent086b
Hi,
in the past I have been able to use the Remote App to play music in the house
using my sound system. My iPhone can not get to my library. I have been trying
to connect my wife’s iPad it can’t see the library either. I have checked
iTunes and it is still set to share my library on the network.
Does anybody have any ideas?
Thanks for any help.

using caps lock key in vmware fusion

2013-12-23 Thread Chris Moore
I’m using key remap and pc hack to enable the caps lock key as an alternate VO
key. When I go into fusion do I need to turn vo off in order to use the caps
lock as an NVDA modifier key?
Then, how do I get back to the Mac apps without VO enabled?

Thanks

Advantages and dis-advantages of the compact and HQ voices of Voiceover

2013-12-23 Thread Daniel McGee
Dear all, I have been thinking of late about the difference between the two
different voices you get with Voiceover premium and compact so here are my
thoughts. I would love to know what you think yourself and if you want to add
to the discussion then by all means feel free to do so.

Note: this list is by no means extensive its just what I think and what I write
may differ to each and everyone’s personal experience.

This is evaluated with the english Daniel voice.

Premium voices
Advantages:
1. Of a higher quality to listen to when reading.

2. Louder in volume.

3. At times, may pronounce a word more clearly in addition, also be more
accurate at saying certain words better.

Disadvantages:
1. When trying to speed up the voice after 45% on OSX or 30% on IOS. Find that
they become less intelligible to understand. Therefore, finding that I have to
remain at the above percentages or even decrease the speed.

2. When reading passages that contain words e.g. the, in, were, her and with.
Find that such short words can be easily missed. So then I'm forced to interact
with document, HTML area of webpage etc to find the currently missed word and
then resume with say all after understanding it with the words method either
IOS or OSX.

Compact voices

Advantages:
1. Able to easily speed up above the previous percentages. In other words,
listen to the voices at a reasonably faster speaking-rate.

2. When reading documents find that shorter words are read, pronounced and
spoken better. This seems to be the case too when reviewing by words.

3. Overall, to me it seems to be a better experience when reading by say all in
the fact that clarity, pronunciation and understandability are the key factors
to my hearing and productivity.
For me, the premium voices seem to be a bit for lack of a better word “strong
on the ear.” I find the compact voices more robotic and interestingly this
feels more natural to hear for me. However, Feel free to dis-agree if you want
to and if so I would love to know why?

Disadvantages
1. obviously, the voices are of a lower quality so some people may find or even
struggle to use the compact voices hence the premium ones for those who need
them for a more natural sounding reading experience.

2. Pronunciation and clarity of words may not be for the end user liking.
Again, echoing the above with a different factor this being the compact version
taken into account.

Conclusion
This primarily being focused on the UK Daniel voice. Compact or premium. I have
found that I move towards the compact version of this voice. However, since the
release of Mavericks and IOS7, I make use occasionally of the premium version
in certain cases since they have made compact more worser in my humble opinion
in the latest version of the operating systems than there previous counterparts.

Now is though where you guys come in. For those who are using the Nuance voices
on OSX and IOS which voice do you use and do you prefer compact or premium and
if so why?

Seriously, ladies and gentlemen, I would love to know what you use and why you
use it. I have done extensive testing to the best of my ability which is why I
wanted to post my experience and findings to you in the hope that you will
share your own thoughts too about the voices.

If you could share as much information as possible on how you use your voices
speaking rate, type of voice etc then would be grate.
I just want to know how others use there voices and what they prefer etc.

Ok I’m going to stop now. If you haven’t already fallen asleep by the end of
this post then full marks to you. lol
Its I wanted to make it as detailed as possible so that people know what I’m
asking.

Thank you

Daniel

Re: a question about zoom in Mavericks

2013-12-23 Thread Red.Falcon
Hi!
I noticed on mine using Mountain lion under keyboard in system pref's in the
shortcut tab and sub level Accessibility the options to use zoom have no check
box the commands are listed but no option to check them on!
And on a side note the default key stroke to invert colours is the same as one
of the hotspot options VO+command+8 [describes item under hotspot 8]
I've successfully changed that to option+command+0 [in my case]
And now pressing those keys change from white on black to black on white!
Just incase anyone was interested in doing that!

2013-12-23 Thread jean parker
Hi All:
You can use the hotspot as a wireless but you can also use it via the usb
cable. Depending on what speed your data connection is, using it this way
could make it faster.

Re: a question about zoom in Mavericks

2013-12-23 Thread Terje Strømberg
I've successfully changed that to option+command+0 [in my case] Where did you
change this command? Not able to use go-command-8 is driving me nuts, but not
totally, just a little bit nuts in the background. Exactly how did you do it?
Had this question on my mind for a while, but forgot to post it.

Take care

Re: Advantages and dis-advantages of the compact and HQ voices of Voiceover

2013-12-23 Thread Terje Strømberg
Norwegian Stine Compact is a light year + better than Stine Premium in all of
the aspects. Especially, more beautiful sound. Apple or Nuance kicked her out
and let the premium disaster in instead. In IOS 7.

I am told that it is possible to download the beautiful compact - compared to
premium voice in Mavericks.

Take care

24. des. 2013 kl. 01:43 skrev Daniel McGee :

If you haven’t already fallen asleep by the end of
this post then full marks to you. lol
Its I wanted to make it as detailed as possible so that people know what I’m
asking.

Thank you

Daniel

Ok, I still can't get the new amazon cloud player to work, even after playing

download, then go into my amazon mp3 downloader, there's nothing there.

Re: More amazon issues.

2013-12-23 Thread Jessica Moss
I've logged in, and like I said, am able to use the cloud player app on my
phone, but don't really want to constantly have to carry my phone around with
me just to play the thing.
My original plan was to put it on to a CD and surprise Hannah with it, sense
she ended up getting a stereo as a Christmas gift when she went to visit her
Granddad, which I knew nothing about until they came back, and I thought he was
kidding, until he came and hooked it up in her room
But moving on from that, I'm not sure how I finally managed to do it the
first time, but some how managed to get it up and running the first time, but
now I'm stumped, and it's driving me up the wall, especially sense I payed for
this so should be able to be flexable with it.

Re: Amazon cloud player seems to be useless on the mac now.

2013-12-23 Thread Jessica Moss
I know, I find a lot of stuff inaccessible with my mac, when just browsing
their site in general.
The cursor jumps around a lot when I try to browse the page, so when I'm
trying to navigate the page, next thing I know it refreshes every few seconds
so 9 times out of 10, I can't view what I'm looking for correctly unless I
vo+right arrow really quickly and hope for the best.
I've also found that voiceover doesn't read the review sections anymore, just
"such and such, out of such and such," made a similar statement, which is
obviously useless.
However, I can use the amazon app on my phone, and once again, it works
almost flawlessly, I just don't see the option to use my 1-click checkout
option, which is supposed to be there to my understanding, sense I have a prime
acount.

Macupdate

2013-12-23 Thread Lee Jones
Dear List after hearing mac update being discussed on list, I checked it
out and I think it may be what I am looking for. I wondered is Mac update
desktop accessible with voice over to allow one click downloading? A lot of
the aps I would want to download from them are freeware, do you have to
register for payment even if you only want to download free aps? If it says
demo after the program does this mean it is not the full version or a beta?
Are there any other reputable third party sites that sell mac aps which
people would recommend as I am finding the ap store too restrictive.

Many Thanks, Lee

Re: Bookmarks Not Saving in Safari

2013-12-23 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Seems to be working fine for me. I have saved a few bookmarks recently and
haven't noticed any problems, but I haven't been paying particular attention.
Best,
Nic

Bluetooth Issues getting very old

2013-12-23 Thread Brian Fischler
This is getting ridiculous as every time my computer goes to sleep and it
starts up again my bluetooth trackpad and speakers don't work, I get a
bluetooth error message that no bluetooth mouse or trackpad are connected then
I have to play around with settings for both the trackpad and speakers.
Freaking ridiculous, and the trackpad is Apple's so not sure why this problem
started. My keyboard is bluetooth and it works, so not sure what the problem is
but these problems are getting so tiresome and taking up so much time to deal
with I am going back to wired stuff. What a sham bluetooth is, maybe it is just
me, but it is getting quite frustrating.

Re: Bookmarks Not Saving in Safari

2013-12-23 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey Nick,

I guess it's just my luck as I am not sure how bookmarks just stop saving to
bookmarks. For as long as I owned a mac hitting command D launches the save
bookmarks option, and now all of the sudden how it stops working is beyond me

Re: Advantages and dis-advantages of the compact and HQ voices of Voiceover

2013-12-23 Thread Andrew Head
Personally, I always use higher quality, it sounds more human I’d rather have a
natural sounding voice than the robotic compact voice, high quality makes for a
much nicer listening experience. I personally can’t understand when you have
the high quality voices available for free, why you wouldn’t use them, but each
to their own. *smile* I have a wide range of voices, I use the australian,
british, scottish, irish, south african, and american voices, male and female
and switch between them every so offten, when I get tired of one for a while,
I’ll switch to another, use it for a little while, and switch to another. I
adds variety and makes reading different things all the more interesting.

Re: Advantages and dis-advantages of the compact and HQ voices of Voiceover

2013-12-23 Thread Shawn AKA BBS
Hi Daniel. For me when I use the Nuance voices, I use the premium
version of the Australian Karen voice. I love the way Nuance tweeked
her voice to sound more human with Vocalizer Expressive. I wish they
would do the same for the male Australian voice, Lee, or if since
Nuance is adding Loquendo voices to Vocalizer Expressive, replace Lee
with Allan since he sounds way better than Lee. As for speech rate, I
don't like to speed up the voice past the rate that's in their samples
because it sounds unnatural when you do that.
