Re: bookmarks hidden

2013-12-11 Thread Nicholas Parsons
HI Jean,
Not sure it can be permanently fixed. It happens to me every now and then, but
as it's so easy to fix I don't really worry about it. As with nearly every app
on the Mac, most content areas and things can be dragged around, changed and
adjusted to look different and provide better visual access to certain things.
The preview pane in Mail seems to work the same way. Something apparently
happens—perhaps a stray mouse click or something else—which causes that
bookmark display table to collapse, and as it's not present visually, VoiceOver
also cannot access it. The solution is to simply move that horizontal splitter
up to reveal the bookmarks. That's my best effort at speculating on what's
happening, but the real cause and, more importantly, any permanent solution are
beyond my expertise.
Cheers,
Nic

this?

Hi guys
I have from a valid source the information that when your AppleCare runs out

New 2013 macbook Pro retina display freezing and saying "busy, busy"

2013-12-11 Thread Daniel Montalvo Charameli
Hello all:

I’d like to comment on an issue that a friend of mine has told me. It
occurs to him on his brand new macbook Pro retina display. He has the
top model, a 16 GB RAM and 2.6 Intel Core I7 processor. The thing is
that he has noticed that VoiceOver keeps saying Busy busy constantly.
As an example, he told me that he opens the preferences pane pressing
VO + d, locating the system preferences icon and then Enter. After
that he has to wait for a long while and hears VoceOver saying the
“busy” thing of death. He is really disappointed because that problem
appeared to b solved with SSD hard disks and so I’ve said to him. We
have tested that in my 2011 MBP because I recently changed the
original disk by a Samsung Evo 840 and in fact Voiceover busy issues
happen much less than with mechanical disks.

Has anybody experienced these problems in 2013 machines? Has anyone
figured out how to solve them if they exist? Before reinstalling the
OS I’d like to see how you’re gone about dealing with these annoying
issues.

2013-12-11 Thread Laura ann Grymes
my 2011 macbook pro has done this from day one of purchase.
I just have to wait until it finishes unfortunately.

I am going to take it to where I purchased a couple years ago and the service
manager will check a few things for me.
I will report back if it can be fixed.
I have repaired permissions and no change.

My macbook has 8 gb ram but has had this problem since I first changed over to
mac.

Its frustrating but wondering if it is just a voice over problem.

Thanks Laura!

Did you change into an SSD drive? If not, that's sadly very common.
The problem here is that it happens even with an SSD drive.

Re: twitter client for the mac

2013-12-11 Thread Daniel Montalvo Charameli
Same (though not officially stated) occurs with Yorufukurou. I haven't
seen updates to this program recently. I don't know if the developer
plans to discontinue it or it'sjust that he thinks it's OK as it is
now. There's something we can do with the twitter website itself. They
have added keyboard shortcuts to go up and down the timeline and also
to perform several other tasks. Basically, j and k are used to move
through the timeline. I gave it a try and, though it has some bugs
yet, I think could be an alternative in case Yorufukurou ever stops
working.

Re: New 2013 macbook Pro retina display freezing and saying "busy, busy"

2013-12-11 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

The few times that this has happened to me usually occurred, at least in my
opinion, due to my impatience. That is, I go to System Prefs, then start
pressing VO-right or tab hoping to move quickly into the preference I wish to
manipulate. I’ve found that if I go to System Prefs, wait for it to load and
announce that it has focus, then start doing whatever I wanted, I have very few
incidents of that behaviour. I have also noticed that this is not limited to
Mavericks or Mountain Lion, if I’m impatient on an iMac using Snow Leopard, I
can create the same busy scenario.

Later…

Observation re Clickable Text

2013-12-11 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi list,

Just reporting on some interesting behaviour I just observed which might help
some people with clickable text/AJAX menus.

I was using a website and the main menu had apparently recently been updated.
In Safari version 6.0.5 on Mountain Lion, VoiceOver reported each item as
clickable. I tried doing a VO-space on an item, but it didn't work. I tried
routing the mouse and doing VO-shift-space as well as a physical click on the
TrackPad with TrackPad commander turned off, but neither of these worked
either. I then switched to Google Chrome and tried the same methods, but none
of them worked in Chrome either.

The interesting thing is I tried routing the mouse to the text, and then
turning VoiceOver off with command-F5 and then physically clicking the
TrackPad. This, strangely, worked. It opened an AJAX style submenu with
ordinary links I could click on. I tried this method several times and it
worked. I only tried it in Google Chrome, however.

So, moral of the story is if you find some clickable text or an AJAX style menu
that you can't seem to activate, try routing the mouse, turning VoiceOver off
and physically clicking the TrackPad. Not sure why there would be any
difference with VoiceOver turned on and QuickNav turned off compared with
having VoiceOver turned off, but it was clearly different.

Cheers,
Nic

Hello
This is probably related to the operating system. As it does not affect
Macintoshes at large. Maybe what we call a race condition. Not sure if this is
been reported to Apple, but we should probably do so.

Bluetooth Speakers Question

2013-12-11 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey all,

I just recently connected a pair of bluetooth speakers to my mac, and twice I
have completely lost VO, not sure if it has been a bluetooth pairing issue or
me screwing up a setting. Both times I had to have someone who can see come in
and fiddle around with my speaker output and VO output settings. I assumed VO
would default to the internal speakers if there was a problem with bluetooth,
but it didn't. Is there a way of setting up your audio output to go through the
bluetooth and if bluetooth isn't working for some reason to go through the
built in speakers?

Also, for some odd reason I am not getting any sound anymore when I adjust the
volume up or down. I used to get that mac beep or twirl sound every time I
changed the volume. And it was working with the bluetooth speakers, but now it
is gone, any ideas?

Thanks

Re: Bluetooth Speakers Question

2013-12-11 Thread Teresa Cochran
Try VO utility, sound. There’s a set of options in there for VO output: system
default and whatever devices you have. I have a USB headset and built-in audio,
and when my Bluetooth device was connected, it showed that as well. Check your
settings as they are now. For example, you might not want your output to be
Bluetooth for vO, as you may not use that always. If you do use the speakers
constantly, you might want to set the vO output to use them by default.

Also, explore the sound settings in system preferences. You can choose the
output device for the sound effects in that tab. You will also find a checkbox
that says “play feedback when volume is changed”, which will give you the
little beep you’re after.

matching same speaking rate with voiceover between devices

2013-12-11 Thread Daniel McGee
Hi all, currently have an iPhone and a Mac Book Pro and am trying to determine
the same speaking rate between the two devices.
I hope this makes sense that is I am wanting to adjust the percentage of the
speaking rate of the two above devices so that in order when I am switching
from one of the devices to the other they will both still be at the same
speaking rate.

The speaking rate of the iphone is at 30%
and
The Mac Book Pro speaking rate is at 45%
This is using the Daniel voice.

Would anyone say that this is the same speed?

p.s.
If any of you guys happen to know the default speaking rate for Voiceover
between the iphone and a Mac Book Pro then I would really appreciate it if you
could tell me some percentages so I can then use that as a guide line in what I
want to adjust them too.

Many thanks in advance

Daniel

SD Card Space And Saving Email Attachments

2013-12-11 Thread Desi Noller
Hi Everyone,

My first question is pretty basic, and I’m sure I should probably know the
answer, but I blame the cold I have for making my mind foggy! Anyway, once I
put an SD card into my iMac, how can I determine how much available space I
have on it?

Secondly, is it possible to save an e-mail attachment directly to my SD card?
Thanks so much!

Finally, a Mac OCR package that rivals whatever you can get on the windows side.

Re: Alternative Browsers

2013-12-11 Thread Mike Arrigo
Some of this may be because of Apple's restrictions on apps that are
allowed in the app store. Apps are required to use certain sand box
rules and are restricted on what permissions they can have. By not
using the app store, app developers are free to use all available
resources on the mac. Installing apps outside of the app store should
not be a problem as long as the user exercises common sense.

Re: Security Software

2013-12-11 Thread Mike Arrigo
Personally I do not use security software. Using good judgement and
common sense is your best tool here. You will not find security suites
in the app store because these intigrate in to your system, and Apple
does not allow apps that do this in the store. I think the major
security suite vendors, kaspersky, mcafee, etc. have software for the
mac. Not sure how accessible it is, but I have no plans to try any of
those on my systems. Sometimes this kind of software actually is
overprotective and causes more problems than it solves.

Re: Bluetooth Speakers Question

2013-12-11 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey Teresa,

Yeah, that's what I thought the answer might be. I was really liking the VO
going through the bluetooth speakers as VO was sounding a lot crisper, but with
the bluetooth speakers having some issues I might have to stick to the old
built in speakers or go through the 3.5 jack so as to not lose sound. It's
strange as a couple of times when the bluetooth speakers hadn't connected yet
when I woke the computer up the sound was going through the internal speakers,
but then out of nowhere it just crapped out. Will have to get a sighted person
back over here and play around with the settings. Thanks again.

I assume you purchased Express via the web? Or does Abbyy’s site detect you

Adding events to calendar from mail

2013-12-11 Thread Jim Gatteys
Hi all!
I just signed up to this group today and have a question about adding an event
to the calendar from a mail message. This used to work for me a few versions
of OS ago but I can't seem to get it to work now with Mavericks. Any pointers
or does anybody do this?
Maybe there is a keystroke I am missing?

Voiceover not working when coming out of sleep mode

2013-12-11 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey all,

Having a rough go of it with Voiceover. I have noticed this for awhile but now
it has gotten really bad. I typically don't shut my computer off just put it
into sleep mode, and now when it comes out of sleep mode I have to toggle VO on
and off five times to get VO to start working with the VO F5 command. I am
still running Mountain Lion, so not a Mavericks bug, any ideas? Thanks,

Hey Jim,

Yeah not sure as this just started happening every now and then a month ago,
but now it is every day. I was ripping my hair out at first trying to figure
out why VO was not working. Luckily I tried the toggle and it came back on, but
it gets frustrating having to do it every time I wake my computer.

Hello:

I'm experiencing this same issue, or at least a similar one. For me it seems
tied to connecting and disconnecting from AC. I'm using a 2013 MacBook Air.

Re: Voiceover not working when coming out of sleep mode

2013-12-11 Thread Donna Goodin
I haven't had to do that, but I have had to hit the shut-down key before VO
would come back on. Then I would go into the Window Chooser and close that
window.

BTW, I'm still running Lion.

I never actually noticed it until mavericks. And I can't tell if it is my

Re: Voiceover not working when coming out of sleep mode

2013-12-11 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey Jim,

I am still on Mountain Lion, and with all the responses it sounds like it is
every version of OS, and it is something that just happened more and more
frequently in the last 6 weeks. Not sure what could have changed for me besides
the remote updates which I never know what those are, and safari updates, but
that shouldn't affect VO coming out of sleep mode. It's definitely strange.

ordering contents of folders in ML

Currently all the files and folders in my documents folder are sorted and
presented alphabetically. I would like folders to appear at the top of the

Mail Filters Just stopped Working

2013-12-11 Thread Brian Fischler
Wow, I think my Mac must be getting ready to crap out as everything is stopping
working first VO won't turn on out of sleep mode, and now out of the blue all
of my mail filters just stopped working. I am running Mountain Lion and have
set up my mail filter rules in gmail, and they worked fine yesterday, but today
everything is going directly to my inbox. Anyone else having this happen? Is my
only option to delete all of my mail filters and set them all up again. I set
them up in gmail as theoretically that would mean that all these messages would
not go to my inbox on my iPhone, but that never works. Sometimes the messages
that are supposed to be filtered would go to my selected mailbox on my iPhone,
but strangely only when I am on WiFi at home, as soon as I leave the apartment
all of the messages that are supposed to be filtered go to my inbox defeating
the purpose. Any ideas? Thanks

Re: ordering contents of folders in ML

2013-12-11 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Phil,

As long as you’re in list view, you can interact with the list and navigate to
the Kind column then use the Jump to header command, press VO-Space, then do
the Jump to header command, and your documents will be sorted alphabetically
within types. If you don’t have any Adobe files, then folders will come first
before HTML, Keynote, etc.

Cheers,

Anne
