Some of this may be because of Apple's restrictions on apps that are allowed in the app store. Apps are required to use certain sand box rules and are restricted on what permissions they can have. By not using the app store, app developers are free to use all available resources on the mac. Installing apps outside of the app store should not be a problem as long as the user exercises common sense.

Dear List wwhy are chrome and firefox not in the Mac aps store when Opera is. I can understand companies not wanting to pay apple commission but both firefox and chrome are free anyway. Surely by making you download from third party sites security is reduced.
