Re: safely remove hard ware on mac

2013-12-09 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

If you’re getting the “In Use” message, then it’s usually telling you that
something on your removable media is really in use. Press VO-f1-f1 to bring up
the AppChooser menu. If an app is open that was used to open a document or
installer from something that resides on your removable media, then bring it
forward and Quit the app with cmd-q. If you had used an installer or .dmg file
from this media, make sure both the Installer has quit and that the disk image
is ejected before ejecting the removable media.

The Disk Utility app is in the Utilities folder, either cmd-shift-u when in the
Finder or up to the Go menu and select Utilities folder.

Later…

Re: focusing in Windows using Fusion?

2013-12-09 Thread Phil Halton
My only reason for preferring full-screen over any other mode is that when
tabbing back and forth between mac and windows, they each appear in their own
space. without full-screen mode, the windows7 window stays on screen blocking
the view of mac windows. For totally blind people this is not a problem, but
for those with some residual vision, it's nice to see the screen clear and the
mac system come into view. I haven't noticed any real noticeable difference in
setting focus between full and single screen modes.

before closing the lid on my MBA, I always tab back to Mac - probably just
superstitious nonsense on my part, but I think it helps with focus issues.
Windows never gets a chance to go to sleep, or put up a screen saver that way,
and I always have focus when I tab into windows.

2013-12-09 Thread Phil Halton
I remember listening to a David Woodbridge podcast on this topic on
applevis.com. It was done in Lion, and Mountain Lion changed one of the
keystrokes - I can't remember which one. Check out the podcast., the crucial
keystroke changed from one of the modifiers. like from command x to control x -
sorry I can't be more specific. The basic method was the same - it was the
keystroke that changed.

Re: Removing widgets from dashboard

2013-12-09 Thread Cheryl Homiak
If you've opened a widget more than once without closing it, you'll have to
repeat this procedure until doing cmd-vo-escape just pings at you and brings up
no choices. Or you can check to see if you are still in a widget each time you
close. It's possible to really accumulate them if you haven't been closing each
time.

More important, I'd like to know if the mail issues are VoiceOver related, or

Setting up Voiceover to go through a different pair of speakers

2013-12-09 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey all,

I recall a while back that David Woodbridge did a podcast where he had
voiceover go through one pair of speakers on his mac and when playing music on
his mac it went through a different set of speakers. I wanted to set my Mac up
to do this as I just got a pair of bluetooth speakers and want music to go
through the bluetooth speakers and VO to go through a pair of speakers I have
plugged in to the headphone 3.5 jack. I can't seem to find the old podcast or
any settings in sound output or accessibility where I can do this. Is it
possible or maybe it is only possible if you have those air speakers. Thanks
for any help.

Re: mac update?

2013-12-09 Thread Esther
Hi,
Cocktail (usually $19 for license) is certainly accessible. I used the
previous version of ExpanDrive (usually $39.95 for license) for FTP, which was
the solution for people who preferred a GUI-based FTP app before the later
versions of Transmit we're released. Now I use Transmit, but I think
ExpanDrive is still accessible. I'd have to ask on the Mac-Access list where I
think ExpanDrive 3 was the chosen FTP app of some people a year ago, since I've
never seen any discussion on this list. I think the Paragon NTFS 2-in1 bundle
that normally lists for $29.95 may be accessible. at least, I know people on
the Mac-Access list who have used the part that lets NTFS drives be viewed from
the Mac. Since the other part is supposed to let Windows users read Mac
formatted drives, I have no idea of its accessibility. You could try posting
to the Mac-access list for questions on some of these apps.

I'll just note that purchasing MacUpdate bundles or MacUpdate promos on
individual apps requires that you create an account, which entails a one-time
negotiation of a CAPTCHA. Afterwords, the buying process is accessible, and
you can access a record of your receipts, license codes, and download links
from logging into your account. They also let you designate the individual
apps in the bundle to other users, in case this includes something you have
already purchased. There's usually a link for trial downloads so you could
check the accessibility for yourself before purchasing.

Re: Setting up Voiceover to go through a different pair of speakers

2013-12-09 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Brian,

I am using this set up right now. And, There was a podcast as you
remember but he did it slightly differently then I do it.

I believe David used a Apple TV and had the Screen share option used to send
the sound from the mac to it. He had the option to send the VO voice with it
or keep it coming out of the Mac. It was a long time ago that I listened to
this so sorry for the lack of detail.

In my case I have a set of powered speakers plugged into my mac and I have VO
coming out of that. I also have a air port express working as a digital audio
output for my stereo
.

I actually have more then one stereo set up this way so I can send
the music where I want it. I can use the same devices to send sound from my
iPhone to my stereos. I plan to change the Express to a apple TV on my main
stereo so that I can set things up more like David Woodbridge did. I expect
this will let me put sound to the stereo from anything playing on the mac
rather then just those sources that have airplay.

I hope this info is helpful. You can definitely have your mac work the way
you describe.

They did release a fix. I think it fixed some issues, but not all. Strangely, I
didn't have any issues with Gmail and Mail until just recently. I guess that's
just the unpredictable nature of the bug.

And yes, it's an equal opportunity bug plaguing VoiceOver and non-VoiceOver
users alike. :)

Re: Setting up Voiceover to go through a different pair of speakers

HI Bryan,
Basically, you just select the output you want for system sound in System
Preferences > Sound. You select the output you want for VoiceOver in VoiceOver
Utility > Sounds. These can be the same, or different, whatever you want. Your
music will play through the system sound output, and VoiceOver of course will
play through the VoiceOver sound output.

Re: Trouble with mail

2013-12-09 Thread Alex Hall
As for the arrow keys, try this: move to a conversation, then turn Voiceover
off. Hit right arrow to open it (up or down and then come back to the message
if that fails). Once you can hit right arrow and not get an error, turn
Voiceover back on.

Why is this?

selecting and copying text on a website

2013-12-09 Thread Andrew Head
Hi all,
Just wondering, how do you select and copy lines of text on a website? either
individual lines or multiple lines/paragraphs?
Since you press vo right arrow to move around web pages, I imagine this is
different to copying text in a document?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Just wanted to say thanks Nick and Eric. Will have to try this tomorrow, as I
did something wrong earlier today and needed a sighted person to come over just
to get VO back up and running, not sure what I did but it killed all sound
overall so must have selected a speaker option that I didn't have and couldn't
get out of it. I assume there is a VO sound output in VO utility? Thanks.

Re: selecting and copying text on a website

2013-12-09 Thread Alex Hall
You use shift-upr or shift-down, just like in a document. You usually get some
extra characters, but it used to be a slow and tedious process until Mountain
Lion came along.

accessible application for burning a movie onto a dvd

2013-12-09 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi Listers,

Has anyone experimented with burning a ,mov file onto a dvd using Voiceover?
Any suggestions for an accessible application? Has anyone ever used
aWondershare DVD Creator.app which is sold in its zipped format as mac dvd
creator?

I basically want to burn a film I have bought through iTunes store onto a dvd
to watch with others on the telly.

Many thanks for any tips.

Andrew
