Re: VO going silent when reading an email?

2013-10-18 Thread Nicholas Parsons
It works fine for me. :) I've demonstrated this below by putting my bullet
points after your comments below.

Alex, by default, text you are forwarding or replying to is in a different
colour, so sighted people should be able to distinguish it without indentation.
You could also mark it as quotes after you've added your comments.

Hi Alex,

The problem arises because of indented text. When you reply or forward an email
the text of the message being forwarded or replied to is indented to
distinguish it visually from the new message text. For whatever reason,
VoiceOver has difficulty reading this indented text.

What can you do about it? ONe option is to copy the text before you forward or
reply to it, and then paste it in once the new message window opens up. This
pasted text should work normally. A second option is to turn off the indenting
feature in Mail Preferences under the Composing tab. The particular checkbox
you're looking for is the increase quote level checkbox.

Cheers,
Nic

Nice one, Ricardo. So long as Alex exports his own VO preferences first that

I haven't tried this yet, but I'm sure you'd have to compose your messages in
HtML to make it work. Another alternative in a text message is simply to use a
line like the following:
facebook: http://www.facebook.com
and the link will be active.

Re: adding links to mail signatures

2013-10-18 Thread Teresa Cochran
Yes, it is Rich text. I just played with this and was able to create a link. I
highlighted the text I wanted to use, pressed command-k to create the link, and
was prompted to put in the uRL. I'm not sure if this works in a signature, but
you can give it a try. The "add link" option is also found in the edit menu
inside a message.

When I tried in a plain-text message, I was prompted to convert the message to
rich-text format.

Re: adding links to mail signatures

2013-10-18 Thread Michael Babcock
max
Another thing you could do is set up subdomains to brand your company name;
assuming you have one domain name for your brand name;;; for example, one of my
domain names is empoweringtheblind.com and i've considered setting up
http://facebook.empoweringtheblind.com
and
http://twitter.empoweringtheblind.com/
to go to
http://facebook.com/empoweringtheblind/
and
http://twitter.com/creepyblindy/
respectively… THis doesn't solve your "linking" issue, however, it does help
with branding… And also would keep your signature looking a little more uniform
like… You could set up social networks for anything this way… I'm not sure on
who your registrar is for your domains; however if you utilize go daddy hears a
video i recorded a while back showing how to do this with voiceover.. (Godaddy
uses a series of updating frames at the bottom of the HTML page, in there DCC
(domain control center), that can for the new user, be a little bit confusing.
Hopefully this video helps, other registrars can be different though.)…
video called, "Get free domains, using one domain!
"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Dhr0zYQsLE
note: the Facebook.empoweringtheblind.com and twitter.empoweringtheblind.com
links do not work… they were just used as examples…

Re: adding links to mail signatures

2013-10-18 Thread Teresa Cochran
No problem; I was just mucking about and playing, and that's when all the neat
discoveries happen for me. :) I don't want to try sending my signatures to the
list as a test, but I do think I might try sending to myself and see what
happens. For example, would an html signature show as an attachment in a
plain-text message? Hmmm.

Re: adding links to mail signatures

2013-10-18 Thread Teresa Cochran
Ok, I realize that I'm replying to myselves, but here's what I've found out
after poking around. When you compose an hTML signature, the "add link" is
available. When you use this signature, you must use it in a rich-text message.
if you use it in a plain-text message, the link is inactive, The "add link"
option is unavailable when the message format option in preferences is set to
plain text.

HtH,
teresaand just shows up as text.

Oops, editing glitch there. let's try again.

The "add link" option is unavailable when the message format option in

Netgear 32 router and modem not playing well with iPhone five

2013-10-18 Thread Mark BurningHawk Baxter
Ever since acquiring this Netgear 32 router and separate modem from my cable
company my iPhone five is having problems connecting to the Internet.

As an experiment, I just turned Wi-Fi off, and I'm getting better response from
my 3G mobile network. The router and modem seemed to be working fine, and are
having no problem reaching the Internet. In fact, I use the Wi-Fi with my
MacBook Pro 15 without any problem at all, and my girlfriend has an ethernet
connection to her desktop PC and experiences no problem that way.

The iPhones seem to be timing out or dropping the connection to the modem.
Everything else seems to be working well, so is there a setting in the modems
login page that I can change to keep these connections active longer? By the
way, this is happening to my iPhone five, and my girlfriends iPhone 4s. It
seems to be only affecting the iPhone's connection, and not the others.

Thanks for any input on this. Be well.

I must be the first voiceover user to ever order his phone online and call AT&T

activated there new iPhone on AT&T? I'm thinking the guy I spoke to was a

Mailing List Conventions: Plain Text Versus Rich text?

2013-10-18 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, all,

There was a discussion of this on another thread, so thought I'd bring it up as
a general topic. Years ago, lists that were blindness-oriented used to be set
for plain text only, as HTML would be rendered strangely by mail readers using
plain text only. Now, there seems to be more of a prevalence of HTML in Email.
Personally, I set mine for reading HTML as an option, but send plain text
messages. I don't really have a good grasp of what most people use these days.
So I'm wondering if folks are sending HTML messages to lists like this one?

Thanks,
Teresa

2013-10-18 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey John,

Back on the phone with AT&T. Not sure how this stuff always happens to me. The
first guy at AT&T claimed you need to open the iPhone to get to the SIM card so
the phone can be activated. I said to him, don't they list all that info in the
settings and he said no. I knew he was wrong. So I am now on the phone with
AT&T again and now I can make calls, but I can't receive them, and they have no
clue what is wrong, very bizarre. In the future I am definitely going in store
to buy the phone. Oh and did I mention when Apple shipped it they left my
apartment number off the shipping label so I had to go to UPS to get the phone
as they aren't allowed to make a correction to the address, and yes, I looked
at my original order placement and sure enough the apartment number was there,
total nightmare experience.

Hey John,

I was calm with AT&T and though it took a couple of calls I finally got it
working. So weird that their customer service reps are so clueless. At least my
moron detecting skills are still good, as how the first customer rep was
claiming that I needed to open the iPhone to get to the sim card blows my mind.

2013-10-18 Thread Patrick Neazer
Hello Brian and all:

Yes, going into the store has its advantages for me :).

The one time I had my phone delivered I had to chase down the UPS truck. I
missed him … had to call the local UPS office and they told me I would have to
come and get it. however, the captain of that particular office reversed the
customer service person's position and send the truck back out to me. hurray
for UPS.

Then, it took about a day to get it working because they had trouble turning
the new phone on and the old phone off.

Yup, since then have gone to the store and picked it up. smooth as silk.

Hopefully you get it working the way you want it soon.

Take good care and I wish you enough.

Audio Boo for Mac?

2013-10-18 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I'm getting a new microphone tomorrow and plan to do a bunch of
demos/recordings for Aplevis.com and other places. I'd also like to try out
Audio Boo, for general tweeting but also to tweet some of these recordings. I
know the iOS app is accessible, but is there an Audio Boo app that works on the
Mac that is friendly towards VO? Thanks in advance.

Have a great day,

2013-10-18 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey Patrick, Thanks for sharing. Yup I went through almost the same thing you
did, but instead of having to chase down the UPS truck the geniuses at Apple
left my apartment number off the shipping label. How odd, the adapter I ordered
at the same time made it here and had the apartment number so I know it wasn't
my error. UPS was a nightmare to deal with and so was AT&T but everything is up
and working fine now. Moral of the story wait until the store has them in stock
in the future. Best,

2013-10-18 Thread Patrick Neazer
Hello Brian and all:

I am glad to hear that everything worked out in the end. it will make a good
story to tell around the campfire :).

Yes, the old way of doing it is still pretty cool … show up at the store, talk
to the nice people, smile at the person in line, box it up, take it home, turn
it on and presto :).

Now you can tell the world what you have learned and what you found out with
your new shiny iPhone. we will be listening :).

take good care and I wish you enough.

Re: Mailing List Conventions: Plain Text Versus Rich text?

2013-10-18 Thread Nicholas Parsons
I can't speak for anyone else, but as for me…

I used to be able to read HTML messages fine when I just viewed gmail in a web
browser. HTML emails are annoying in Mac Mail, however, so I only send rich
text messages. I don't send plane text messages, but if I receive an email with
too much HTML, such as images etcetera, I'll press command-option-P to view it
as plane text.

Cheers,
Nic

I wonder what it will take to get Google to just get on with implementing HTML5
and dump this fuckin' flash! I refuse to install that parasite on my system

I'm a bit confused here. Rich text is the same is HtML, isn't it? For all

Hi Steve and list,

Steve, though I agree with you and also with your choice of rather forceful

So this is your warning. Do not use the colorful language here in future, K?

Thanks a bunch and have a great weekend!
