Re: Organizing Notes

2013-05-16 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi Tracyi,

Yes there is. On the Mac at least.

Go to the menu bar, View, Sort by. There are three options: Date Created, Date
Edited and Title.

Your selection here seems to be specific to that device. So you can choose to
sort notes by date created on one Mac and date edited on another. I'm not sure
if there is a similar option for iOS

Hi all,

working very well for me. It's on my Mac and my iDevices; it also syncs across

In other ways, I'm finding some shortcomings for my needs. Any time I go in
and edit a note, that changes the time stamp.

My main question is, is there a way to change the order of the notes list? I
can change the order of the folders, but I cannot find a way to change the
notes list.

Thank you,

a very useful app for the physically disabled

2013-05-16 Thread Brandt
hi there folks,

I just bought One-Hand keyboard from the mac app store for R1099. This is $199
if I am not mistaken.

This app allows you to type one-handed using only one half of your qwerty
Keyboard. It works similarly to Fleksy, by predicting what you are typing. You
can also add words to your dictionary.

For me with only one usable hand, this app is a godsend. I have barely had the
app for 20 minutes, and I am already typing at about 60 to 65% of the speed I
had when I had use of both my hands.

If you have issues typing with 2 hands, I highly recommend this fantastic app.

Warm regards,

Brandt Steenkamp

Re: a very useful app for the physically disabled

2013-05-16 Thread Esther
Hi Brandt,

I read about that app, and posted a suggestion to the mac-access list
for someone who was asking for suggestions on one-handed typing. I
wasn't sure whether the app was accessible to blind users. Did you
try the free version first? From the description, this app works for
people who are accustomed to touch-typing with two hands, but can
transfer the touch-typing functions of both hands to one hand.
Apparently, muscle memory kicks in shortly after they begin to use the
app. You can also use KeyRemap4MacBook app (free but donationware,
and not at the Mac App Store) to remap keys for more convenient
access, and also the "Sticky Keys" accessibility function. Eric Caron
posted a podcast up at AppleVis for how to set up your Mac Keyboard so
you can use the Capslock key as the VO keys (Control+Option) on the
Mac, and also set Capslock to be the Insert key for Windows under
VMWare Fusion by using KeyRemap4MacBook.

For other who are interested, I believe this is the web site of the
developer of the app that Brandt mentions.
• One-Hand Typing for Injured Touch Typists
http://www.onehandkeyboard.org/
And here are links to the Mac App store the full and demo versions of
this app:
• One-Hand Keyboard: Free One-Hand Typing (free demo version) by
Peter Kamb
https://itunes.apple.com/app/one-hand-keyboard-free-one/id501185004?mt=12
• One-Hand Keyboard: One-Hand Typing ($129.99) by Peter Kamb
https://itunes.apple.com/app/one-hand-keyboard-one-hand/id465275525?mt=12

I also came across a web site that does a comparison of one-handed
keyboard
alternatives:
http://www.aboutonehandtyping.com/onehandtypingalternatives.html
You can use Safari Reader (Command-Shift-R) on this page.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

OFF Topic, I can't sinc my iOS devices with my mac

2013-05-16 Thread Daniela Rubio
Hello:
Sorry if this doesn't belong to our list topics, but I have tried to do all and
I just can't sinc my iPhone or my iPad with my mac.
When I click the sinc button on iTunes, either from the file and devices menu
or inside the devices area, It starts, but like 5 seconds later, it just stops
and won't say anything or send an error message. But of course, the end Ding
never comes and the files, apps, music an videos are not synchronized.
One of the times, I got an error message that said that the sinc process was
not possible, because the synchronization could not start.
I have reinstalled iTunes, and nothing changes. If somebody has an idea, I
would thank you very much, I am desperate!
P.S. If you want to reply off list it is OK, so we don't bring more off topic
to all.
Best

Fast navigation don't work

2013-05-16 Thread Terje Strømberg
Hi

I have checked the "use left and right arrows to turn non and off fast
navigation" check mark. Don't work. Nothing happens when pressing left and
right arrows. The "set fast commandoes" are grayed out.

The short - cut commandoes for keyboard in Voice Over setting does neither
work. Like option + t for time and date. Any idea of solution? I use the
external bluetooth laptop keyboard from Apple.

Take care

Itunes constantly ripping files as aiff files.

2013-05-16 Thread Jessica Moss
I've converted I don't know how many CD's into Itunes, then loaded them on to
Hannah's Sansa Clip Zip, only for them to not play, thinking they were in mp3
format, sense it was set to that by default.
However, when I got ready to play the file on the clip-zip, it read it as an
aiff file, and refuses to play it. Does anyone have any idea why this is going
on?

Re: Flac files inquiry

2013-05-16 Thread erik burggraaf
Flac stands for free lossless audio codek. They ar compressed audio files that
can be decompressed to the exact specification of the original audio. No
quality loss.

Apple doesn't support these as far as I know which is a great loss. You can do
one of two things. The Approach I recommend if you really must, is download
fluke and add Flack support to both ITunes and Finder.

The other approach is to download flip for mac and install quicktime and then
presumably it makes flac happen, but fluke is so easy when it works that I
can't see why you'd want to bother.

The third option which is what I recommend, is to ditch ITunes and get VLC.

Hope this helps,

Re: Flac files inquiry

2013-05-16 Thread Esther
Hi Christine,

If you just want to convert the FLAC files to mp3 format in order to
play it, a number of people have used a new Mac app named Easy Music
Converter:
• Easy Music Converter (current price $5.99)
https://itunes.apple.com/app/easy-music-converter/id572507484?mt=12

This app does fast batch conversions between a large variety of audio
and video file types. (Oddly enough, AIFF format, which is the Mac
standard uncompressed format, is not one of the supported types,
although WAV format -- the Windows equivalent standard uncompressed
format for sound files -- is supported.) The program will also do
audio extraction from video files.

I think this will be easier for you than using Fluke. By the way,
many people who regularly use FLAC format for ripping and storing
music on the Mac (but who are not on the macvisionaries list), prefer
to use a free program known as XLD (for X Lossless Decoder) to rip,
convert, and work with FLAC files and cue sheets. XLD will support
more accurate ripping if you are a music purist, and want to include
more metadata information (e.g. tags) in the FLAC format files. The
main challenge for new users is that XLD's command switches follow the
tradition of terse unix and linux manual page descriptions. So unless
you want to maintain FLAC libraries and work with cue sheets, I'd
recommend that you simply convert from FLAC to mp3. If the buzz words
about accurate ripping, cue sheets, etc. don't convey anything to you,
then you probably don't want to work directly with music in FLAC
formats.

The program I suggested should be much easier for you to use, and may
be useful for other purposes. While Easy Music Converter was offered
for free for about the first day and a half it was introduced in the
Mac App Store in mid-April, the current price of $5.99 is a relatively
low price. It just dropped to $5.99 today from $9.99.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Itunes constantly ripping files as aiff files.

2013-05-16 Thread Esther
Hi Jessica,

Did you check the format of any of your ripped tracks in iTunes before
transferring them to the Sansa Clip Zip? Select one of these tracks in
your iTunes library, press Command-I to "Get Info", and navigate to
the "General Tab". The track should be identified with information
like "Kind", "Size", "Bit rate", and "Sample Rate". So my mp3 files
will have "Kind: MPEG audio file", while my AAC files may have "Kind:
AAC audio file" or "Purchased AAC audio file". Do these files show
Kind to be "AIFF"? Alternatively, if you don't use Command+I, you can
press Command+Shift+R once you've selected a track, and display that
track in Finder. Mp3 files will have a ".mp3" extension, AAC files
may have a ".m4a" extension, and AIFF files should have a ".aiff" file
extension.

If you want to change the format of the file used when you rips your
CDs, bring up your preferences menu in iTunes with Command+comma,
navigate to the "General" tab (which should show up by default, or
else you can press Command+1 to go to the "General" tab). Then
navigate to the section for "When you insert a CD:" and navigate to
the second pop up menu button, which is for "Import Settings". VO
+space on this button, then on the "Import Settings" window, VO+Space
on the pop up menu button following "Import using:" and select the
format you want (e.g. "AAC encoder", "AIFF encoder", "Apple Lossless
encoder", "MP3 encoder", "WAV encoder") You can also choose the
quality setting in the next pop up button. Then choose the "OK"
button to leave the "Import Settings" window and choose the "OK"
button to leave the General preferences tab and close your preferences
window.

By the way, I looked up the Sansa Clip Zip specs, and it states:
"Compatible with a Variety of Formats
The Sansa Clip Zip MP3 Player is compatible with a wide range of audio
formats, including MP3, WMA, secure WMA, AAC (for playing back DRM-
free iTunes music), Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, and Audible. You'll be able to
enjoy music in crisp fidelity without having to compress or convert
your files".

Normally, the default setting for iTunes is to import to AAC, which
should also work for the Sansa Clip Zip.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Google Drive download issue

2013-05-16 Thread Christine Grassman
Hello, all. I am trying to download some files from Google drive. I am signed
in, and was able to download four of eleven files. When I click download, it
seems to work, but when I search for the files, it only shows the files on
Google Drive. I am having trouble getting to help; it keeps saying collapsed,
and isn't bringing anything up. Is there some sort of limit to how much I can
download in a given period of time? Never used Google drive before. Thanks.
Christine

Re: Itunes constantly ripping files as aiff files.

2013-05-16 Thread Jessica Moss
I checked them when I transferred them to my harddrive/sansa clip, and that's
when I found they'd been ripped in aiff format, which I find really strange,
considering the fact that "mp3 decoder," was checked.
So then I had to go back and convert them all to mp3 format, and now for some
reason, when it comes to one of the albums, the next to last track just sits
and won't convert, which doesn't make sense either, because the disc isn't
scratched, and I played the song before I tried converting it, and it played
fine, so have no idea what to make of this.

Google Drive Download Issue Update

2013-05-16 Thread Christine Grassman
Earlier, I wrote that I was only able to download four of eleven files from
Google Drive. Seems the seven files that wouldn't download were too large to be
scanned for viruses, and there was a warning that did not make itself
immediately apparent. There was a "download anyway" button if one was so
inclined. Just FYI if anyone should encounter this issue.

Re: Flac files inquiry

2013-05-16 Thread Esther
Hi Christine,

VLC will certainly play those files, and is a good program to have on
your Mac. The FLAC conversion to another format is only a suggestion
if you want to be able to transfer and play the music files to an
iPhone or other iOS device, or to an iPod. Another non-iTunes music
player that a number of people like to use is Cog, which is free and
which will also play FLAC. The URL for Cog is:
http://cogx.org/

Esther

burning an mp3 cd with iTunes

2013-05-16 Thread Mary Otten
I am trying to burn a playlist that I have created in iTunes to a cd.
The files are m4a, and I want to make an mp3 cd. When I try to burn the
playlist, Itunes says it can't do that, I assume, because the files are not
already mp3. Is there a way to convert these to the highest quality mp3 and
then burn that to a cd?

If you want to import the flac files into itunes and preserve their lossless
quality, two programs that work well with voiceover are xld and flac tunes.
