Bitcoins for the blind

2013-05-01 Thread David Hole
Hi.

Are any of you playing around with bitcoins?
If so, are there any great ways to use it with a local wallet on Mac
(or Windows)?
Are someone of you mining bitcoins?
If so, how do you handle that?

Best regards David

Hooking up a Mac Mini without a monitor

Good morning all,

What exactly will happen if I hook up a Mac Mini without a monitor? I know that
it will need one eventually but I'm wondering if I can start working on the set

Haha. Hi,

I'm trying it out right now. I don't think you will be disappointed with the
accessibility. I'm able to read by line/ word/ character, and continuous
reading with a 2 finger flick down seems to work just fine. Actually, when you
first open the book, it tells you the voiceover gestures you can use to read.
including highlighting and selecting text, etc.

Actually, when you first open the book, it tells you the voiceover gestures
you can use to read. including highlighting and selecting text, etc.

Re: Kindle now accessible on IOS with Voiceover.

2013-05-01 Thread Scott Rumery
I have been trying to use this as I have been waiting a long time to be able
read Kindle books but I am having one very annoying problem. I used my Amazon
account when we got our daughter a Kindle a couple of years ago and now all of
her titles show up in my Kindle app. I have gone through the process of
deregistering her Kindle but her books are still showing up on my iPhone. Does
anyone have any suggestions as to how I can keep this from happening?

Thank you,

Scott Rumery

No, you will have to go to the Amazon website to find books, but once you make
a purchase that title should show up on your iPhone.

Re: Kindle now accessible on IOS with Voiceover.

2013-05-01 Thread ppowells09
It's about time they came to the party. We all know how resistant Amazon has
been to making their services accessible to us. Forgive my conspiracy theory
attitude, there had to be some pressure from somewhere other than the blind
community as a whole. We as a community have managed through constructive
action & dialog to gain accessibility in many areas other than Amazon's
services & devices. I have cautious optimism that it is a new beginning for
Amazon & accessibility.

Strange issue with Mountain Lion Recovery

2013-05-01 Thread Chris Gilland
I have a client who has brought me her 2009 white 13 inch macbook as she
needed a recovery done of Mountain Lion and needed her drive wiped. I'm not
gonna go into the specifics, but her hard disk was pretty bad off, let's
just put it that way. Anyway, I've managed to get into the recovery, and
with her help, we got the installation started, but here is my questino.
The startup chime, as well as Voiceover with the Fred voices in the recovery
is profoundly! quiet! I can't hit F12 nor fn+F12 to bring it up any.
Before you all say it's gonna be way quieter than it is when you're actually
booted into the OS... I completely realize that, remember, I do this stuff
for a living, but when I say quiet, I mean quiet! this sucker's barely! and
I mean, barely! audible! Putting my ear literally touching the plastic
casing of the system doesn't even make it
intelligible. What in the heck could be causing this. She's paying me
hourly to do this, and have left the system in my care while running some
arrends. I'm just wonderring if there is anything maybe I coudl check that
could be going wrong.

Chris.

Can't tell you how happy I am to see this.

I don't live in the U.S., so I don't have access to the US Bookshare store.

This is the reason why I always used to struggle to find accessible books.
This comes as a huge relief. The only downside is that my credit card is gonna
be heavily used in the coming days. :)

Re: Kindle now accessible on IOS with Voiceover.

2013-05-01 Thread Chris Blouch
So what is the advantage of the Kindle book reading app over ibooks. I
haven't really played with either one. On iBooks I was able to read
continuously page by page and I could touch to read a line but I
couldn't figure out how to read the previous or next line. The rotor let
me choose to flick through characters and headings but not lines. If it
was reading continuously it would flip pages automatically but I could
only manually turn the page by going to the page chooser and then
flicking up and down. Probably just some gestures I don't know about. I
thought a three finger flick left/right would turn the page like moving
between pages of apps in the main screens.

Re: Strange issue with Mountain Lion Recovery

2013-05-01 Thread Tim Kilburn
Chris,

First, your regular volume commands of F11/F12 are not usable in Recovery mode
or in ASR kinds of partitions. That's normal behaviour. Two ways to get
around this is to either press VO-cmd-right arro until you hear VO say
"volume", then press VO-cmd-up arrow to raise the volume. Alternatively, you
can reset the PRAM which will put the volume back to a default level which is
likely at a more ear friendly level. What probably happened is that her
computer volume was set really low when you restarted and entered the Recovery
partition so that's the level you get.

Hope this makes sense.

Amazon's mobile app for ios is accessible. You'll do lots of clicking through
various screens to see reviews etc, though. So unless you really have problems

2013-05-01 Thread Mary Otten
3-finger flick does enable switching pages n ibooks. Or you can use page
chooser, as you noted. The advantage to the Kindle app is that there are more
books to select from, and prices are usually, but not always, cheaper. I like
ibooks because they let you organize your titles in categories. I don't see a
way to do that with the Kindle app. The fact that you can read by words or
characters in the Kindle app is a plus. I hope Apple fixes the word character
line thing in the next ios release.

Hi,

The advantage is, you have access to way, way, way, more books with Amazon than

Hi Chris,

this happens all the time for me. What I do is, Press VO Command left or right
arrow until you get to the Voiceover volume. Now, although its at 100%, press
VO command up arrow. You will here the system volume increase.

Re: Kindle now accessible on IOS with Voiceover.

2013-05-01 Thread Mary Otten
Scott,
Does your daughter still need access to those kindle titles? If not, then I
believe you can sign in to your amazon account, go to manage my Kindle, or
something like that, and in there, you can actually delete the books, which
means, should you need them again, you'd have to repurchase them. If you don't
want to do that, then I don't think there is a way you can stop those older
books from showing up when your Amazon app is set to view the items in the
cloud. But if you sort by recent, wouldn't all those older titles show up after
anything you buy? This is assuming you have not been buying Kindle books for
yourself until now, of course.

Windows Emulation?

2013-05-01 Thread Brandon Olivares
Hello,

What is the easiest way to get a Windows application to work on the Mac?

I've heard that Wine doesn't really work very well with Voiceover. I also don't
want to spend a lot on licenses and such, which it sounds like is the case with
VMWare.

All I"m trying to do is get a live chat applicaiton to work. It's through
StarDevelop, www.stardevelop.com.

Is there anything I can do?

Re: Kindle now accessible on IOS with Voiceover.

2013-05-01 Thread Scott Rumery
I have recent as my sorting order and they still show up. She does not need
these titles any more but I can't delete them because when I view my library on
Amazon the delete link is in an image, at least this is what Voice Over is
telling me. I have talked to Amazon and I was told that the Delete from Library
link is actually a piece of JavaScript that the screen readers are having
trouble with. The person that I was talking to said that he will forward this
to the appropriate person and that they needed to get this fixed, but I am not
holding my breath.

Re: Windows Emulation?

2013-05-01 Thread Chris Blouch
VMWare fusion is about $50 which isn't all that bad. What will cost you
more is the license for Windows itself, which depends on what flavor of
Windows you want to test under. If you're trying to emulate a typical
user then that would be Windows 7 more often than not and that will run
you about $150. If you're trying to test for accessibility you can't
just fake it with WINE, which tries to emulate the Windows APIs so you
can run Windows apps without buying Windows. First, they probably aren't
going to emulate a lot of the accessibility APIs and second, if
something doesn't work right, how do you know if it's the app you're
trying to use or the faked Windows environment? The chat app's website
says it supports web, iOS and OSX clients in addition to Windows, so
could you use one of those?

Re: Kindle now accessible on IOS with Voiceover.

2013-05-01 Thread Timothy Emmons
Nope, no joke, I thought the same thing too until I tried it and actually read
a chapter and a half of a book I've been looking at on the other Kindle
keyboard with just speech, with my bluetooth braille display connected to my
iPhone. Talk about nice, and I hear that all the rest of the books are
available, no matter if speech is enabled or not now, since we can read them
with voiceover. I'm really excited, and being a librarian at the Regional
Library for the Blind here in Alabama, I've got a few patrons who are kindle
users to a degree and this is exactly what we and they have been waiting for.
I'm pumpe because my wife and I have had a kindle for a while her longer than
me, because they just a few years ago allowed for accessibility of sorts, in
the Kindle Keyboard, so we've got a ton of books, now that the app is
accessible I am going to be a reading fool. Have fun and take care.

Re: Strange issue with Mountain Lion Recovery

2013-05-01 Thread Chris Gilland
It was incredibly quiet. I still to this very minute don't know what on
earth the issue was.

Once the installation finnished, the volume was perfect. the startup chime
went back to its normal volume, and the recovery volume also went back to
normal. I'm wonderring if something in the efi firmware may have middle
mucked before the install was done. God only knows.

  Chris,

First, your regular volume commands of F11/F12 are not usable in Recovery
mode or in ASR kinds of partitions.

  Hope this makes sense.

key repeat errorwas Type2Phone free this weekend

2013-05-01 Thread Christina C.
I used to love type 2phone. However, lately mine refuses to type properly.
It constantly repeats any key I type over and over and over. I am running
latest version of mac and type2phone and ios on my iPhone 4. The last
type2phone update was supposed to fix the key repeat problem but it did not fix
it for me. I keep trying to get it to work but it just won't. Does anyone know
a fix for this? I do love that I can copy text from my mac onto my iPhone. That
seems to be working fine still without all of the repeats.

how do I fine tune in slacker?

2013-05-01 Thread Christina C .
Hi is there a trick for the fine tune feature of radio stations in slacker. I
get how to get to the area but there is a slider I'm supposed to adjust and I
can't get it to work. I have tried the double tap and hold but that has been
hit and miss. The flicking up and down doesn't slide the slider.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Christina

second delay between the press of the scroll button and the movement of the
display. this makes reading in braille very slow. Wondering if anyone else
has experienced this?

No, you will have to go to the Amazon website to find books, but once you
make a purchase that title should show up on your iPhone.

2013-05-01 Thread Ray Foret Jr
I know a work around for that.

1. go here:

www.amazon.com/access

Do it from there and you will not need to fool with the captcha. They don't
tell you that though: You just have to fool around and find it out.

Hi Jesus,
Unfortunately, you can't set sounds for shut down and start up. Especially
since the startof sound actually comes out of the internal speaker of your
computer. So there would be no point anyway. Besides, why would you want to
change that lovely ding that you hear when you start up your computer?

RE: Mac Sounds

2013-05-01 Thread Jesus Garcia
thought so, don't mine the start up sound as a matter of fact I kind of like
it. I would like a shut down indication, sometimes it would be nice to know the
machine is shut down for good. Guess still working on windows buggy mode. How
about other types of sounds say when you get to the end of a particular screen
or menu are there sounds out there besides the ones available within the OS?

Re: Mac Sounds

2013-05-01 Thread Matt Dierckens
The best way you know that your computer is shutdown, is when the fan stops
spinning.
Regarding your other questions, I have no idea as I don't really care about
such things to worry about sounds for them.

Just a heads up. You cannot download kindles from the Amazon mobile app. You
have to save them in your WishList, and purchase them through your browser.

Re: problem with messages going to the Cloud

2013-05-01 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi Gigi,

Are you talking about Mail messages here or Messages as in iMessages?

I'm assuming Mail messages as I don't know anything about archiving iMessages…

• What account is this you're having trouble with?
• Have you designated which Mailbox to use for archiving? You can
do this by selecting the mailbox from the mailbox list, activating the
contextual menu, then choosing – use this mailbox for archiving. Make sure the
mailbox you're using for archiving is an IMAP mailbox and is the same one
you're using on your iPhone.
• When you archive a message on your Mac, can you navigate to the
archive folder on your Mac and see the just archived message along with other
messages archived on your iPhone?

Those are just my preliminary thoughts. Hopefully it may be of some help
trouble shooting or perhaps when you've answered those I or someone else might
have some other ideas.

Re: how do I fine tune in slacker?

2013-05-01 Thread ppowells09
Hi Christina,
On the latest update to the slacker app, you have 4 tabs along the bottom of
the app. They are from left to right as you are holding your phone vertically
as follows, related artists, favorites, popular songs, & newer songs.
When you double tapp a given tab, there is a slider about the end of your
finger's length that opens. It opens to a default progress indicator for each
given tab. Moving the slider to the right increases, to the left, decreases the
type of music you want played within that open tab. My best suggestion would be
to tap the slider, it will tell you what its progress is. Turn off vo & play
with it until you get it the way you want it. It will mean turning vo on & off
a couple of times, however, is very doable. At least they made this update for
the phone accessible again.
Hope this helps.
Regards,

Pam Francis

Hi is there a trick for the fine tune feature of radio stations in slacker. I

hit and miss. The flicking up and down doesn't slide the slider.

Any ideas?
