Re: messages app question

2013-02-13 Thread Nicholas Parsons
The only way I know of to add a phone number is from your iPhone. If you've
turned on iMessages on your iPhone, and you use the same Apple ID on your Mac,
your phone number should show up in that send messages from pop up menu under
accounts in Messages preferences.

Apart from this I'm not really sure what you can try. Check on your iPhone that
iMessages are set to use your phone number. This can be done in Settings >
Messages. Other than this, I guess try turning iMessages on your phone off and
on again, or seeing an Apple Genious.

Good luck!

did something to my download

2013-02-13 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi guys.
I did something weird to a download and I can't figure out if it's still going
or if I interrupted it in the middle and I need to start it again; I also can't
determine what the progress is. Here's what I did.

I went into the VoiceOver Utility and chose 9 voices to download and got it
started just fine. Then without thinking what I was doing, I went to a note
which accessed the Cloud, and now, although the voices are listed and shown as
being downloaded, I can't get to the progress indicator. Do I need to restart
my computer and begin the process over?

I have my new SIG with the Apple Corps of Dallas, and I would like to show some
of my fellow blind some of these voices. At the last meeting, I was asked to
show the Mac to some of these guys who have iPhones but not Macs.

Gigi

Mouse Navigation Using Voiceover.

2013-02-13 Thread Emilio Hernandez
Hello everyone,

I have created a track pad commander shortcut that will perform a "right-mouse
click" when I hold the CTRL+two-finger double-tap.
There is a program in my Doc that I would like to access, but in order to reach
some extra menus the manual suggests the aforementioned mouse option.
Does a method exist with voiceover that would allow me to move the
mouse-pointer to the voiceover cursor? I am aware of of SHIFT-CTRL-OPTION-F5,
which will allow me to rout the voiceover cursor to the mouse-pointer, but I
would like to perform the opposite behavior with the hope of my track pad
shortcut giving me access to some extra menus.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Hi,

vo-command-f5 will rout the mouse to vo.
To get a context menu, you want to try vo-shift-m first. Most of the time that
works.

vo-h brings up the Voiceover help menu. From there, you can get a list of most
of the commands.

Re: did something to my download

2013-02-13 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi again guys
I discovered something a little weird here. My download did not end, but I had
not a clue; you know, out of sight, out of mind, ha, ha in this case. I had
done command spacebar while still in the dispaay showing the progress of the
download. I think that did something to take it somewhere so that VoiceOver
would not show me that progress line when I went back. I found this out later
when I was asked to give permission for a voice to download that I had checked
after I started the download.

Thanks, Colin, for your input; it was very helpful. I am having a rather
unique problem.

mbusb...@gmail.com is the address I would like to use for this list. However,
I had previously been subscribed under another e-mail address, which was
m...@busboom.at.

What is happening now is that I am still receiving all of the list messages in
my m...@busboom.at account, but I can only send to the list using the
mbusb...@gmail.com address. I would like to both send and receive list mail
using the mbusb...@gmail.com address only. Odd, I would think. I would really
like to get this straightened out. Do you know who the list owner is?

Kindest regards,

Mike

WOO HOO!

2013-02-13 Thread Eric Oyen
I just managed to get my Braille Sense U2 to interface with my iPhone! now I
just have to figure out how to control most of the functions on said phone.
this will certainly make reading messages and responding to them a lot easier.

if I keep up my current rate, I should be able to complete learning grade II
Braille. All that will be needed after that is practice, lots of practice.

now, all I have to figure out is how to get that Braille Sense to interface
with my macbook. I am guessing the method to do this is similar to that for the
iPhone.

2013-02-13 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hello,

yes. VO command F5 moves the mouse cursor to the VO cursor. BTW, In my
opinion, setting up a trackpad command just to do a right click might not be
necessary. Like a person remarked, most of the time, VO shift M will bring up
the context menu you require. But, when this doesn't work, you can just turn
your trackpad commander off, and press control and click your trackpad. Its
the same thing as a right click on windows, bring up a context menu for the
item under the mouse cursor.

Changing languages to English in VoiceOver

2013-02-13 Thread John Panarese
Hi folks,
I was contacted by someone overseas who needed some help with VoiceOver on
the Mac. At the moment, he has Alex, but Alex speaking German. I don't speak
German myself, so iI was hoping someone can suggest an easy way that he can
switch to an English voice so I cna help him. He is a very new user, so I have
to be simple with instructions in walking him through any procedures.

In the VoiceOver Help menu, under in the command help menu, there are some
Braille commands. The Braille Sense keystrokes for keyboard control should
bel listed in the manual or quick reference card, and if not, all of the
commands can be found in the Voiceover Utility, in the "braille," category.

Re: best pandora client for macbook?

2013-02-13 Thread Brandon Olivares
You have to interact with the table of stations, and then actually double click
on the station you want to switch to. But you can select a default station in
preferences.

I'm not sure if you know how to double click with VoiceOver, so here's how:

1. On the station name, press VO-command-function-F5 to move the mouse curser
there.
2. Press VO-shift-space twice quickly.

Also, there are unlabeled buttons, so let me explain those:

The first checkbox is labeled stations. it shows or hides the stations list.

The next checkbox is to play or pause.

The button after that is to skip.

Then you'll usually see the song name and artist, though sometimes it is
hidden. After that is a button for thumbs up, and then another for thumbs down.

Then you'll see the album name.

Everything is pretty intuitive from there.

Re: Editing text

2013-02-13 Thread Georgina Joyce

Hello Eugenia,

Thanks for this. Following Ricardo's message I think I'm getting used to
it. Now I see the logic, as it hadn't clicked what was going on before
my post.

Nice to know I can change it if I can't get used to it.

It won't be long before I completely switch.

Thanks again.

  Hi there
The cursor behavior in VoiceOver can be changed if you want to behave like Windows. I
haven't done it myself; I just got used to it. If you want to change it, first go to the
VoiceOver Utility with VO F8. You will need the FN key maybe if you have a laptop and
haven't changed the behavior of this key. Then go down arrow until you hear Verbosity.
Press the tab key. It will probably say Speech. Press right arrow twice until you hear
VoiceOver say Text. Press space bar to choose it. Then press the tab key three times
until you hear the choice that says "Speak text to the right of the cursor".

I hope this helps and is not confusing. This will make VoiceOver speak during
deletions like you're used to in Windows.
I just tried this, and I just decided I like it better the way the default is.
I'm not used to it any more, so I think I'll change it back.

Hi,

I think this might be a case of you not being use to how the cursor acts on the
Mac. On the Mac, the cursor position depends on the direction your navigating
in. If navigating to the right, the cursor is located to the right of the last
character or word spoken by Voiceover. If moving to the left, the cursor is
located to the left of the last character or word spoken.

Thanks.

Web site development

2013-02-13 Thread Justin Harris
Hello,
I currently use Joomla for my web site, but am looking in to other ways of
making web sites, and have not had much luck finding accessible programs on
the mac to do this. I am currently testing Sandvox. While I have found it
very easy to edit text and such, I can not move items around on the page,
configure things like contact forms, etc. The inspector does not seem to be
very accessible. From what I have found online, the program used to be more
accessible in Snow Leopard, but something got broke in Lion. I think this
program is worth keeping an eye on, but for now I need something else.
I am looking for a program that will let me make a good web site without
having to know a bunch of html code, but that will let me insert html code
when necessary. Joomla is okay, but I honestly prefer to publish my site
from my desktop. Does anyone have experience with any other program that
worked well? Thanks in advance for your feedback.
Blessings,
Justin Harris

Accessibility of Soulver on the Mac

2013-02-13 Thread Rodney Haynie
Has anyone tried Soulver on the Mac using Voiceover yet? I did a search up on
AppleVis, but saw no posts.

Soulver is a calculator on steroids. Kind of in between a calculator and a
spreadsheet app. Very versatile, and I have heard good things from sighted
users.

It is currently featured and is on sale, so I was thinking of snapping it up.

Any comments are welcome on the app.

Take care.

GnuPG and IOS

2013-02-13 Thread Erik Heil
Hello everyone,
I was wondering if its at all possible to use the GNU Privacy Guard (gpg)
and its friends at some level within IOS. I realize that the native Mail
app has no native support for any digital signatures r encryption tools,
but perhaps their are some external tools that can get the job done? Since
their is no scripting abilities withn IOS, you can't just hack together a
Python/Perl script in this situation. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Re: Accessibility of Soulver on the Mac

2013-02-13 Thread Chantelle Griffiths
Hi Rodney,

Soulver works well on the Mac with Voiceover. I have been using it for a couple
of years now and wouldn't use another calculator app. The developers are also
very responsive to feedback from VO users. When I first downloaded the iPhone
version, having had much success with the Mac version, I discovered that the
keypad was not VO accessible. I reported the issue and it was fixed in a future
update and works beautifully now.

There are a few quirky things I've noticed, such as when moving from the main
text area to the results area. No matter which line you are on in the text
area, you have to manually navigate with VO to get to the corresponding line in
the results table, which is time consuming but a minor annoyance. I have not
really had to worry about this much until recently and have not yet reported it
as I only discovered it yesterday. It is also quite possible that it's me doing
something wrong.

I only use it for basic calculations and conversions, nothing scientific, but
it works well for me.

Cheers,
Chantelle

Re: messages app question

2013-02-13 Thread Nicholas Parsons
It shouldn't matter that your email address is selected. The main thing is to
have your phone number set to the default send from credential for Messages on
your Mac/s. Is your phone number showing up in that pop up menu yet? Once this
is done all your iMessages should sync between devices. Ordinary text messages,
however, will not sync.

Re: Changing languages to English in VoiceOver

2013-02-13 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Is that a VoiceOver setting or a system setting? As far as I know, VoiceOver
can only change voices, whereas the language is just the system-wide setting.
So, you would need to go to System Preferences by Pressing VO-M, VO-Space,
typing s y, pressing VO-Space on System Preferences. Then go to language and
text (assuming he is running Mountain Lion) by pressing VO-Right Arrow,
Interacting by pressing VO-SHIFT-Down Arrow, navigating to language and text by
pressing VO-Right Arrow several times, then pressing VO-SPACE to open this up.

More directions to come after I go eat my sandwich. :)

Re: changing document extensions in text edit

2013-02-13 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello,

What you are seeing is the option to save to a .docx format, I think.
Interestingly, Pages gives you the option of saving in .doc format, while
TextEdit gives you the option to save as .docx, but you cannot save as both in
either program, as far as I know. The .doc is the older file extension, and
the .docx is the more current file extension, but they are both MS Word formats.

Thanks,

Harry

Re: Changing languages to English in VoiceOver

2013-02-13 Thread Nicholas Parsons
First of all, it's easier to get to language and text by pressing tab once you
first open System Preferences and then pressing the letter l. Then open it by
VO-SPACE.

However, I've been playing around with the settings here and and not sure I can
achieve what you're trying to do. IN the languages tab, there's a table of
languages which you can drag and drop to reorder. Changing the number one
preference seems to produce some minor changes, but most of my computer remains
in English even after changing my first preference to Indonesian and logging
out and logging back in again. There are only a few minor words in some lists
and things that actually change to Indonesian.

So, I'm sorry, not sure I can help much more here.

Best of luck with it though! If no one else on this list knows I'm sure there
will be some Apple resources somewhere that may explain.

Best of luck!

Nic

Re: Do not download new slacker radio update

2013-02-13 Thread ppowells09
Hello,
I too am a slacker subscriber. I pay for the premium membership. And definitely
not a fan of the new layout. It would not take much to make all of their
buttons work. I will never understand why the vendor of a subscription app
feels the need to totally rearrange the layout. In my opinion, if it isn't
broke, don't fix it. I have found through their support Email system, one gets
very little response. I eventually found them and have the contact on my phone
to get to their direct tech support via phone. Their email system seems to
shoot back automatic computer responses rather than having a human look at what
the issues are and correct them. That app has been decent for years. There was
no reason to totally rearrange the layout especially for those of us who can no
longer reliably use it on iPhone. I agree, the iPad app, seems not to have
changed. However, if the iPhone app changes, I'm concerned about the changes
they will make in their iPad app. It would be a real shame to lose that
service.
