mail refuses to get new messages?
Hi all, I use gMail, and have for years. Suddenly, Mail on the mac refuses to see new messages, even though my iPhone is retrieving them just fine. I've tried the "take all accounts online" and "get new mail" options in the mailbox menu but neither seems to do anything. I've also closed and re-opened mail, but to no avail. Any ideas? Thanks. Re: which Windows 7 do I need for bootcamp?
I would not get the upgrade, usually this requires that a previous version of windows be installed. One thing you might look for is an OEM version, these are usually much cheaper, they just don't include support or documentation. Original message: Hi all, I need to set up bootcamp on the MB Air since it will be my general-purpose demonstration machine - I have to be able to show both Mac and Windows, and I think Bootcamp is the best way to go. I'm on Newegg and I see Windows 7 Home Premium for $200 or Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade for $120. What's the difference, and which should I get to use with Bootcamp? As an aside, if I partition my ssd and later realize I need more room on one partition or the other, can I resize the two without destroying the data on one or both? Re: which Windows 7 do I need for bootcamp?
I recently installed Windows7 Home Premium 64bit edition in bootcamp. Mike is right, the upgrade won't work - it requires an existing windows version. I don't know what the difference between OEM and Commercial versions is exactly, but I bought the full commercial copy. I believe, that OEM, is for Origional Equipment Manufacturers and is a special type of liscence that may or may not work for bootcamp. Again, I'm not sure, but I'd be careful about buying an OEM copy if you don't know definitely if it'll work for bootcamp. The bootcamp documentation says something about this. - Original Message - From: "Alex Hall" To: "Mike Arrigo" Cc: Sent: Monday, December 17, 2012 10:42 AM Subject: Re: which Windows 7 do I need for bootcamp? Re: GarageBand expansion packs
Thanks Nicholas, I just bought it and it's downloading now. I see that there is an "in-app" feature for buying additional 19GB of loops/synth etc. That's no doubt why it's so cheap, they get you on the back end buying all the additional material. I'm assuming that everything that MainStage downloads will automatically be available to GarageBand and I won't have to shuffle files around - that's how apple usually does things. Any word on VO accessibility of the MainStage app itself? I guess I'll find out for myself shortly. Re: Spellcheck in Mail
Alex, Anne, and Others, I figured out a basic reason why it wasn't working was simply my approach. It's really quite simple. I have always pressed cmd+shift+D to send the message, which it first spell checks. I never (have never thought) to spell check the document with cmd+colon or cmd+semi colon (what, precisely, is the difference, here? it seems like the cmd+semicolon simply moves you to the misspelled word you can correct while the cmd+colon offers suggestions? Anyway, since I was using cmd+shift+D to send the message, after the suggestions given here, it actually makes sense that it would go ahead and send the message, because it would assume that I am saying to cancel the spell check and go ahead and perform the action interrupted by the spell check: sending the message. When I use the traditional spell check methods as in Pages, I can press escape with no issue. Thanks all for your suggestions and thoughts. Sometimes it only takes a different perspective. I was in a mindset that when spell checking a Mail message I needed to attempt to send it first and have Mail check it on the way out. Recently Added playlist in Itunes 11 has no music
I have recently added some music to my iTunes library, and this morning, I went to move some of that music in to existing playlists. Now when I go to the recently added playlist, all it has is books. I am using iTunes 11 with the sidebar enabled, so I can see the sources table like in iTunes 10. Is there something I'm missing? Or did they just decide to take the recently added music out of the list? Seems very strange. Re: Spellcheck in Mail
Hi there! So if I remember OK you can also open VO+shift+m before finishing your spell check and choose to hide spell check and you should be back in the unsent messagee I wrote something wrong in this message and hope to check this out when I send it! *smile* so when this message turns up and in my part one of the words Message is still miss spelt then my memory was wrong! But if the message word is correct then I was able to stop spell check and correct it then send again! So here goes! Amazing Slow Downer iOS app is free today
Hi All, For all the musicians out there, the Amazing Slow Downer iOS app is free today only. Roni Music's ASD apps for the Mac and iOS let you listen to pieces that you're trying to learn at variable speeds without altering the pitch. They're very accessible, but expensive. This app normally lists for $14.99, and has never, to my knowledge, ever been free. Get this now since it is only free for 24 hours and started sometime yesterday, I think. Posting to both macvisionaries and viphone (sorry for duplicates) and the listing is already up at AppleVis. • Amazing Slow Downer by Roni Music ($14.99 but free for a very short time) https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/amazing-slow-downer/id308998718?mt=8 Description follows. If you're a musician who likes to learn new songs and techniques by listening to the same piece of music over and over but wish that the music could be played a little slower, then you'll enjoy Amazing Slow Downer. You can repeat any section of the music at full speed, slow it down or even speed it up by changing the speed between 25% (1/4 of original speed) and 200% (double speed) without changing the pitch! Change the tuning or musical key? No problem, Amazing Slow Downer handles that as well. Setup seamless loops by touching the "Set" buttons during playback. Amazing Slow Downer is the ideal tool for any musician, transcriber or dancer wanting to improve their skills. Important notes: Cannot play DRM protected files from the iTunes store (m4p and audio book files). Requirements: Compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (3rd generation and newer) and iPad. Requires iOS 4.3 or later. Okay, when I set up two-step verification I had to set up some application-specific passwords for things like Apple mail and my linux installation etc. that didn't support two-step verification. explanation for missing recently added songs
Well, I guess I answered my own question. I just bought an album on iTunes, and it shows up in recently added along with recently purchased books, which is unfortunate. The stuff that is missing are mp3s purchased from Amazon and added into my iTunes library. So I guess "recently added" only knows about iTunes purchases or cds you wrip, but not things imported into the library from other sources like Amazon. The music from Amazon does show up in the music table, thank goodness. Hello. Main stage is some what accessible with voice over. There are things you can do within the application and some work arrounds. I wish that people on this list stop making big statements one way or the other, with out checking the situation themselves and not based on what they heard somewhere etc. Nektarios. Re: GarageBand expansion packs
Mike, I'm in the process of downloading all the GarageBand jam packs now. I don't know what I did, I was just poking around in the MainStage app and getting familiarized with it, when a dialog popped up for getting the additional 19gb of instruments and loops. It was probably just a automatic thing where MainStage saw I didn't have certain stuff, and decided to let me know. Unable To Install Windows On My Mac At All
Hi all, I'm not sure if I've written about this here before, but I'm having one hell of a time trying to install Windows on my Mac, the biggest problem being that my internal superdrive no longer works. I'll explain what I've tried so far in more detail below: First, because my superdrive is broken, I tried using 2 external USB DVD drives. One was an LG that worked with AC power, the other was powered purely by USB, but I don't know its make or model. In both cases, I could select the Windows DVD as a startup disk in System preferences. However, the LG AC powered drive hung on the "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD" message, while the USB only drive Skipped booting from the disk entirely. This happened both when trying to install Windows to a Bootcamp partition, and when changing the partition map scheme of my internal hard drive to MBR and trying to install the way you would on a traditional PC, which, just so everyone is aware, actually does work. I did it in January of this year when my Superdrive was still functional, and had no problems. Next, I created and booted from a CCC backup, downloaded and installed VirtualBox, and used its command line interface to create a vmdk file that would give me raw disk access to my internal hard drive. I used VMWare Fusion to create a new, custom virtual machine, then edited its configuration file to include the vmdk file with raw disk access. I was able to boot the virtual machine from both DVD drives, so I went through the Windows install process until I got to the desktop. I Rebooted the Mac from the internal drive, and got all the way to "Starting Windows" before the computer restarted itself and went to the Startup Repair screen. I told Windows to fix whatever it thought the problem was, but no luck. It did the same thing. So I started up from my external hard disk, booted the virtual machine and reran the installer from within Windows itself, thinking that my previous attempt may have failed due to hardware changes that occur when running Windows virtually ass opposed to natively. I hoped that, by running the first part of the install that copies the files from the DVD to the hard drive, then rebooting the machine completely and finishing the install on the native Mac hardware, all the correct components would be detected. Well, that was, and still is, merely a nice thought. I got as far as "Setup is loading files" and "Starting Windows" when I rebooted, then got a "Windows was unable to start the installation" error and an "OK" button. I pressed it, the computer restarted, and came up with the same error. Lastly, I tried using a flash drive created with the Windows 7 USB DVD download tool to install from, but the Mac wouldn't boot from that either. I installed the rEFIt boot manager and used that to boot from the flash drive, but still had no success. I'm at my wit's end here. Is the Mac seriously that full of crap about the devices it boots from? I've reset the parameter RAM, reset the SMC, checked for possible software updates, used different flash drives and Windows DVD's, but none if that seems to make any difference. I don't have, or know anybody who has, access to an Apple USB superdrive, so I can't confirm whether or not that will work. Does anyone know how I could possibly resolve this? I need the resources on this Mac for large sample libraries i want to run, and my PC just doesn't have enough power. Thanks for all the help you guys provide. It's very much appreciated. Saving preferences in text edit
Hi Can someone please remind me how to set Text Edit to save on my mac and not in icloud? I can't see it in the text edit preferences or in the icloud tabe of the main apple preferences. I want to be able to quickly open text edit without that silly dialogue asking where I want to save things. I seem to remember than when "on my mac" is the default that goes away. Re: getting to podcasts with Itunes 11
Hi Scott, Not sure if this is going to help. I turned on the side bar within the view menu in Windows. This gives me back my sources list which I can arrow up and down to find podcasts. There is more tabbing involved than with previous iTunes versions but the podcasts definitely show up. I think iTunes is better on the Mac but it's definitely workable on Windows. Hi, Lisette, That dialog is actually asking what you want to open. You can press the "new document" button and a blank document will be displayed. You can also press escape and then command-n. I really can't find a way not to show that dialog. HtH, Teresa Slow down; you'll get there faster. testing my mail: if it works, it's fixed!
Hi all, If this goes through, then it's fixed. What I think happened was, after I changed my account to 2-factor authentication, I was prompted to set a password when I sent a message. I assumed this would work for incoming mail as well, but it must not have since the incoming and outgoing passwords can be different. I revoked access and got a new code to try, but could only receive mail, not send it. This was just the opposite: I had entered the new code in account settings, but had not gone to the advanced tab of the smtp settings to enter the password again. Now I've entered the third code into both locations, so things should be back to normal. Now, let's hope this works! Re: blind mice mart
It is very slow unless you purchase an account on sendspace, but it can be done. Locate the movie you want. Click on the link. It will bring you to sendspace. I find it is quickest to search for "click to start downloading" or whatever the phrase is. Do so. If you are using a free account, it may take quite a while, a half hour or possibly an hour. It should start playing as soon as it is fully downloaded, sometimes before it is finished. I find that it does not automatically get added to my iTunes library. If you want this, you can select it, copy it, then drag and drop it into the library of your choice. (Because it is an mp3, it will not go into movies.) You can use command i (I think I am remembering that correctly; it is so automatic for me now that I am not sure) to change the information, as it will usually show up as untitled otherwise.) Two things you can do. 1) Try vlc it plays all my avi's. Also you may try getting quicktime to search for items that will be able to play. Re: testing my mail: if it works, it's fixed!
Well, not so much, apparently. I am now back to being able to send, but not receive, after yet another password prompt appeared some time after everything started working again. By that time I had closed the page with the code on it, so I could not enter it again. Everyone tells you to use this two-factor authentication, but no one lays out steps for making it work with certain mail clients. I'm about to revoke access for the third time, generate a new code, re-enter it everywhere I can think of, then keep the code around for when mail pops up that password dialog yet again. If this doesn't work, I see no choice but to disable this security feature, which would really be a shame. signing in to you tube on appleTV?
Okay, I have entered my Gmail address and user name correctly a few times, and youtube on the appleTV keeps telling me it's incorrect. I know it's right, because I signed in to it on my mac just before I tred to do it on appleTV. Trying to get to my subscribed channels, and saved searches. So is there a trick to this, or is it not possible with youtube and the AppleTV? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. GarageBand expansion packs
Mainstage is quite well labeled etcetera but I have no need for it (apart from the Jam Packs) so have never actually tried to do anything with it. >From memory, I went to the MainStage menu in the menu bar, chose something >along the lines of download additional content, and then I was able to choose >which Jam Packs I wanted to download. These Jam Packs are pretty huge (as in >several GB each), so it's probably a good idea to just download them one at a >time. I know some people have had crashes when trying to download everything >at once. The process of downloading the Jam Packs was perfectly accessible for me and all the downloaded content automatically showed up in GarageBand without me having to do anything. Glad this was of help to you. I hope the download process is smooth and you start making some funky new tunes with all that fantastic additional content. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. A few questions about GarageBand
Hi, I am trying to transfer music tapes to my Mac using GarageBand. What is the best way to separate the tape in tracks? Also, how can I rename regions to better reflect what is recorded in each region? I remember having seen this control somewhere but I couldn't find it again later Thanks for your help, Ioana -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group.
