Re: AppleCare paid for itself

I have not had that serious of an issue, however, I have had reason to use my
apple care. I know without it I would have been paying money I could not afford
to keep my mac running properly.

Yes. Vo+F1. If you do it twice in a row, you'll land in the app chooser

Re: please can some one recommend an accessible alternative to iTunes that will allow me to mannege my current iTunes libary and iPod?

2012-12-14 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi Scott. I appologize for that whole "Apple Hater" comment. I said that
because you were thinking of switching to Android but since you have three
Apple products I take that back. Yeah, when I updated my Itunes, I didn't like
a few things that it did. That whole grid view thing was stupid though I
changed it back to the classic view after I learned how, which by the way you
don't need a hack for it as someone said earlier in this thread. And I didn't
like that when I updated it changed my shuffling setting to off without my
knowing it. These are minor annoyances, but I have faith that Apple will make a
fix in the next update.

and it is fixed now, along with another very minor bug that someone found. (You

Thanks to Stacey, and we here at Draconis hope that everyone is enjoying the

Re: where am I on voiceover?

2012-12-14 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi guys
For those of you who have trouble pushing a lot of keys, do you know that you
can lock your voiceover keys? If you press the voiceover keys plus the
semicolon key, then it locks your VO keys. Doing that again unlocks them.

locking the vo keys

2012-12-14 Thread Estelita
Hi,
I found out that locking the vo keys, the Command key loses its function, and I
cannot type when I'm on the edit field.
So I think locking the vo keys affects the general functions.

Re: locking the vo keys

2012-12-14 Thread Alex Hall
Yes it does. It is basically as though you had managed to glue your control and
option keys down, so any other key you press will automatically have those two
keys added to it. I have never found it a helpful feature, particularly after
mapping my vo keys to caps lock.

adding memory

2012-12-14 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi guys
I just want to comment on my observation so far on adding memory to my Mac Book
Pro. I had 4 gigabytes before and now I have 8. I have noticed a difference
when using a braille display with grade 2 braille. I am not finding as many
mistakes where keys are left out of the translation. Before, I would press say
an l key and get a bb sign or a b. This happened with my Focus 40 as well. Now
it does not seem to be happening any more, if yours truly could type better.
You know, these computers can't type worth a flip. Sometimes my computer
dictates better than I type!

I have used this feature in Safari, although I guess I could have used Quick
Nav just as well. I sometimes have used it if I needed to use three or four
keys together which involved the VO keys. I didn't feel like changing my VO
kemys to anything else, so I use it sometimes.

I'm not sure why this function is useful, but maybe it was before Snow

Yes. Vo+F1. If you do it twice in a row, you'll land in the app
chooser menu of all your currently running applications.

Mind you, if vo+F1 doesn't work, then try fn+vo+F1.

 Thank you kindly,

Re: New Braille Sonar iOS App

2012-12-14 Thread Scott Davert
HI.
I've already recommended to the few people that I know who are
studying contracted braille with iDevices that they get this one. I
like how it lists the rules associated with the translation along with
the dot combinations. I hope they'll develop one for UEB as well. The
dev indicated that it is something he's looking into.

Re: please can some one recommend an accessible alternative to iTunes that will allow me to mannege my current iTunes libary and iPod?

2012-12-14 Thread Scott Davert
NO worries Shawn. Again, I know most software has its own flaws, and
while I'm glad iTunes is reasonably accessible, I just wish I wasn't
required to use it. Oh well, I'm about to load my iPhone on my new
Macbook air, and from what I've read, it should be a more enjoyable
experience than working with iTunes on Windows.

Take care,

Assigning braille keyboard commands to nonvoiceover functions?

2012-12-14 Thread Scott Davert
HI all.
In my quest to eliminate the need for my keyboard, I'm I have been
giving some common commands like VO plus J a braile keyboard
equivalent. However, there are a couple of taks I can't seem to
accomplish. One of them being closing a window (Command W on the
keyboard), and another being to quit an application (Command q on the
keyboard). Does anyone know of a way to somehow create such commands
with braille devices?

With many thanks for any help,
Scott and my braille display Dotty

Re: AppleCare paid for itself

2012-12-14 Thread Chris Blouch
I really like AppleCare for laptops as they get banged around a lot. For
phones and desktops not as much. Like most extended warranties they are
betting that you won't need any help so it's just profit. Most failures
I've had in desktops were hard drives since that's one of the few moving
parts left and usually they died long after the AppleCare would have run
out. Sure there will be an odd early failure every now and then but
mostly the desktop boxes just work. Likewise for mobile devices which
have no moving parts. All that said, I have had to use Applecare a few
times when my wife's laptop failed. Turned out the motherboard and a few
other things were bad. While it's annoying to have something break the
service was a great experience. We were just about to head to the inlaws
for a holiday and Apple went so far as to ship us a box the next day,
picked it back up the same day, fixed it the next day and shipped it to
the inlaws the day after that. So total time the laptop was out of our
hands was about 48 hours. Not sure how they could make it much better
than that.

Hi all:

Well, I know Clark Howard doesn't like extended warranties, but, today, I just
got my Mac Mini back from the repair center.

My 320GB hard-drive crashed--making the click of death, a few days ago.

I had purchased an AppleCare warranty for my Mac and they felt the repair would
be covered.

So, I brought it to the local repair facility with my certificate in hand.

They took a look, and, I got a call from their tech saying the hard-drive had
crashed (which I already knew), and they were ordering another one.

I got a call a couple days later, letting me know the machine was fixed.
Initially, they wanted my discs to reinstall software, but, they found out they
had a copy of Mountain Lion (which I purchased anyway) so they installed that.
Not only had they reinstalled Mountain Lion, but, the new hard-drive I received
was a 500GB hard-drive. And, all at no charge. Guess they don't ship as many
320GB drives anymore. I'm not complaining.

Here's hoping I get even more use out of this one.

Re: Assigning braille keyboard commands to nonvoiceover functions?

2012-12-14 Thread Red.Falcon
Hi there!
OK I do not use Braille but if you can set a braille command to use a mod-key
then you can set that to a trackpad stroke and set that to Command W, but I
could not see anywhere for Command Q,
But you can just use the trackpad as is!
When on the APP you wish to close just 2 finger double tap at the top middle of
the trackpad and that should bring up the main menu and then just 1 finger
flick to the APP name then flick down to quit and double tap!
And that should do it!
Likewise you could just find the close window option and double tap that so no
need to set up commands!

Re: Update on ChangeReaction and Stacey's Issue

2012-12-14 Thread Josh de Lioncourt

Though it has been a while, ChangeReaction for Windows did get numerous updates
with bug fixes and such. The legacy ESP Softworks code was unwieldy and
difficult to work with. We've designed our new game engine to make it much
easier to update apps, and of course the Mac App Store helps with this, too.

Re: New Braille Sonar iOS App

2012-12-14 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
I have a question about this app. If I need it for Nemeth Code symbols, would
you input your Nemeth symbol and/or expression with the braille display? I can
see putting in dots for one or two cells, but I would think something else
would be needed to input, say, a modified expression such as a circle with a
number inside it.

creating smart playlists with the new iTunes.

2012-12-14 Thread Jessica Moss
I've just upgraded Itunes yesterday, and tried to create a smart playlist to
burn to CD, something that used to be easy, and now can't paste the items into
it that I copied from my music library for some off-the-wall reason. When I
find the playlist and tab to it, it just says "empty table," then makes the
usual "bonk," sound when there's no option to do something, which is really
frustrating. Does anyone know of a work-around for this, or have the key
commands changed?

Macbook Air question

2012-12-14 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I just got an Air for my business, so I can't use it for personal stuff, but I
can still play with it! I'm unboxing it now, and I found two cables. One is a
normal charger, but the other is just a thick cable with prongs on one end and
what looks like a Mac Mini connection on the other. Obviously, no ports on the
Air will fit the larger cable, and I have no idea what it's for. It has no
transformer box like the charger, either. Any ideas? Thanks.

Have a great day,

That's the extention cord for the charger. The little piece that has the
foldable prongs on it can be removed from the charger, and that extention
cord attached to make a longer cord.

Re: creating smart playlists with the new iTunes.

2012-12-14 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Maybe I'm misunderstanding but, Smart Playlists normally cannot be pasted into.
Smart Playlists are populated using search and matching criteria that you set
up in the Smart Playlist attributes. I would expect that if you use a regular
playlist, the Copy and Paste should still work.

Later...

verify backups function in time machine with voiceover

2012-12-14 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Dear Listers,

In time machine, there is an option that allows you to verify your backups.
This option makes sure that your backups are actually usable. According to what
I have read in the various support pages, a sighted person would be able to
choose this option via the time machine icon in the menu bar by clicking on the
time machine icon while holding down the option key. This would result in the
"verify backups" to appear which you then click to activate.

I've tried to perform this action with voiceover but to no avail. Does anyone
on the list have an idea how to accomplish this?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Re: verify backups function in time machine with voiceover

2012-12-14 Thread Chris Blouch
Once you do VM-M twice to get to the various widgets in the menu bar you
don't have to hold down the VO keys anymore. Just right or left arrow to
find the Time Machine menu. Then up/down until you find "Backup Now".
When you press just the option key you'll find it changes to "Verify
Backup".
