RE: Video Converter Suggestions

2012-11-23 Thread Kliphton . A . M
Are you looking for free, or paid versions? What all would you like this
converter to do? Off the top of my head, I have heard a lot of people
mention handbreak, and DVD ripper pro. Just to name a few.

Subject: Video Converter Suggestions

Hello everyone,

Does anyone know of an accessible video converter for the Mac?
I have several video files that have the ".mkv" extension.
I found a program on the Internet, but it places a watermark on the video.

Any suggestions people have would be great - hope all are having a safe
holiday time with family or friends.

commander for notifications center?

2012-11-23 Thread Kliphton . A . M
When notifications center was first introduced in mountain lion, someone
posted a work around on how to make a commander or hot key for it since you
couldn't do it the normal way in vo utility. Does anyone remember how to do
it, or have that message handy? I searched for it on the archives, but no
luck. Thanks.

Did you try the built in video converter from Apple? Just open the context
menue und start converting.
I use a german Mac OS and so I can't tell you the correct titles in the context
menue in your language.

Re: Sound Forge ON Mac?

2012-11-23 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Yes I do. But all you need to do is to press Enter to stopp recording. Then
uncheck "Arm" and you can listen to your recording by pressing Spacebar.
Unfortunately the record window is completely inaccessible with VoiceOver. But
at least you can make a recording.

All the best

Re: Sound Forge ON Mac?

2012-11-23 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Frankly, I consider that almost a deal breaker. Here's a thought though. Can
you go in to the preferences window, and from there, is there a display section
where you adjust the size of windows and graphics and such? I'm thinking maybe
that perhaps you can downskale the size of those display factors and such so
that it's possible to access the stuff in the record dialog window? Also, what
happens if you enter the record dialog and then quit and restart voice over?
Try some of that and see if maybe what you do makes any difference and let us
know?

Sincerely,
The Constantly Barefooted Ray!!!

Re: Numbers reports "busy" when working with long spreadsheet

Hi Brian
Some people on this list of said that they like the program called tables. I
have not used it myself because I am been able to work around the problems that
we've discussed. I can see that if you use numbers for hours a day, it would
be a definite problem. I don't know if I would call numbers and excel
inaccessible, but I would call them difficult to use these days If you have
large files.

Can no longer use Google Maps to get directions

2012-11-23 Thread Christine Grassman
Haven't done this in a while, since I generally just use Navigon or another app
to get directions. However, I am seeking directions from one point to another,
not from my current location, in order to plan a trip, and Google Maps on the
Mac is so cluttered with a visual map I can't make heads or tails of it, or
even find the option for public transportation. I tried going to Google's
mobile site, but it appears that their map services are only available if one
has an Android device. Is there a workaround, or another site I can use? Thanks.
Christine
P.S. I tried Mapquest, but that's a bundle of confusion as well.

updating Mac Mini hardware, and I have questions

2012-11-23 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
It's that time of year when cool stuff can be gotten for insane
prices, so I'd love to update my mini's hardware. I currently have a
500gb hard drive (magnetic, not solid state) and 2gb ram.
1. If I could only do one, should I upgrade the ram or the hard drive
first? I run out of ram a lot, but would the fast speeds of an ssd
nullify the excessive hd use of having low ram?
2. Can the hard drive be easily upgraded? I'd love to drop an ssd in there.
3. Does the mini have two drive bays? It'd be awesome to have the 500
as a media drive, accessible to mac and windows, and the ssd as my
primary drive for operating systems and programs.
Thanks in advance!

Re: mountain lion impressions

2012-11-23 Thread Brian Fischler
Does anyone have a guide to doing a clean install of Mountain Lion? I
have nothing but busy busy problems in everything I run on my 2010
iMac in safari, mail, new rack, everything is constantly busy busy
Maybe a clean install will fix it, otherwise I find the mac has become
unusable at these times when all my applications go into this busy
busy phase. Thanks

Re: zip question

2012-11-23 Thread Chris Blouch
You should be able to just open it in the finder which will extract it.
The resulting iso file can be opened in Disk Utility and burned to a CD.
If you need more details just ask.

Numbers reports "busy" when working with long spreadsheet

2012-11-23 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hello,

I purchased one of the alternative applications to work with spreadsheets on
the Mac called Tables. Initially, I was very pleased with it as it contained
several very useful shortcut keys, for instance, to move to the top or bottom
of current column, to jump to the beginning or end of a row,. Selecting a range
of cells was also pretty accessible. I exchanged a few e-mails with the
developer and he was helpful.

Since Lion however Tables have become so much like numbers in terms of
reporting "busy" all the time, that it slowed my work totally to an acceptable
pace. The recent updates of Tables also brought a drop in the accessibility. I
would not advise at the moment to buy this programme although do test it for
yourselves as you have a 30 day trial period. I've not been writing to the
developer since. I got a bit fed up and I have had other things to contend
with. Also, I was hoping to be able to switch to Numbers which I did and
initially things were sort of okay until my spreadsheets grew in size and I m
again finding I can't work with them at a pace that acceptable. Additionally,
not being able to jump to top and bottom of a column or beginning and end of a
row is a disadvantage.

Best wishs

Re: ipad mini question:

2012-11-23 Thread James Mannion
Well I guess if she is going to follow the suggestion of changing the
language via te IPad mini, she is going to have to either be able to
understand Spanish or have sighted assistance. I think that was the
reason for the question of how to do it from the mac. Because the mac
is presumably still speaking English, the IPad is not.

Help with best way to get windows 8 on my mac mini

2012-11-23 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Hi,

Could anyone tell me if they have successfully installed windows 8 on their
macs if I have to get the dvd version or if I can just use the upgrade and
create my own install dvd with an iso file? It seams to make sense price wise
to go for online upgrade and create the windows 8 install if this works.

Thanks,

Ioana

Please check out my cd on www.ioanagandrabur.com on iTunes and most online
stores.

Importing CDs in to iTunes

2012-11-23 Thread Agent086b
Hello all, I am importing hundreds of CDs in to iTunes. I am finding that some
CDs are imported track by track and not as a complete album. I have selected
the tracks to an album and gone in to the info section but could not find any
to check to be part of a compilation or similar.
Can anybody help here?
Thanks as always.

 Christine Grassman Nov 23 08:40AM -0500

Haven't done this in a while, since I generally just use Navigon or
another app to get directions. However, I am seeking directions from one
point to another, not from my current location, in order to plan a trip,
and Google Maps on the Mac is so cluttered with a visual map I can't make
heads or tails of it, or even find the option for public transportation.
I tried going to Google's mobile site, but it appears that their map

 Hey guys,

I have had several problems with numbers since the mountain lion
updated, and emailed apple accessibility a few weeks back. I never
heard anything as I did express my disappointment with how poor an
apple product like numbers worked with VO. I finally heard back from
Apple and they said Numbers hasn't been updated in several years to
reflect the changes in operating systems, and they currently can't say
when numbers will be updated. Very frustrating and disappointing. I
think Apple should place a disclaimer on the product, as it is very
misleading. I work with large spreadsheets, so would love to hear

Re: Importing CDs in to iTunes

2012-11-23 Thread Cheryl Homiak
First of all, you should check each cd before you let it be imported. It's
possible for iTunes to identify a cd incorrectly and also, the database may
come up with several possibilitiies from which you have to choose.

If you know that your cd is being misidentified, you can use cmd-i on all the
tracks together and enter the correct information for the album manually before
importing and also can do each of the tracks individually for a cd. Or you
could wait until you have imported the cd and then select all the tracks to put
the album information in. But if you wait until all the hundreds of cds have
been imported, it will be a much more difficult job.

I understand the problem somewhat as I have a slightly different but related
one. I unfortunately didn't have the foresight to know that someday iTunes
would come along. So several years before iTunes became accessible, before I
even owned a Mac, I ripped all my cds and then gave the cds away to friends.
That was okay except that iTunes, when I began using it, was not able to
identify a lot of my ripped material correctly; apparently the id tag
information was done differently. So to this day I don't have a lot of my music
in iTunes because it would be too scrambled up and I don't have the time to
spend straightening it out. Since you have original cds, as long as you proceed
with your importing systematically, I would think you shouldn't have such a
drastic problem. This is as much as i know and probably others on list will
have more detailed advice. I would just say: Proceed with caution as you import
each cd.

Yes, what I was trying to say was the correct name comes up for the CD before I
import it.
But although it shows the album it imports it as separate tracks.

Hi there!
If you are selecting all of the tracks of one album then select the options tab
and in that window you will find part of a compilation and like part of a
gabbles album!
And if you only pick one track the option to do that is in the Info tab just
after genre!

related one. I unfortunately didn't have the foresight to know that
someday iTunes would come along. So several years before iTunes became
accessible, before I even owned a Mac, I ripped all my cds and then gave
the cds away to friends. That was okay except that iTunes, when I began
 using it, was not able to identify a lot of my ripped material correctly;
apparently the id tag information was done differently. So to this day I
don't have a lot of my music in iTunes because it would be too scrambled
up and I don't have the time to spend straightening it out. Since you have
original cds, as long as you proceed with your importing systematically, I
would think you shouldn't have such a drastic problem. This is as much as
i know and probably others on list will have more detailed advice. I would
just say: Proceed with caution as you import each cd.

Re: vo randomly restarts in safari

2012-11-23 Thread Chris Blouch
One problem with Jaws is that it will attempt to 'repair' bad HTML under
the hood. For testing this masks errors in a site from developers such
that Jaws might work ok but other screen readers are not as tolerant of
bad code in a particular setup. VoiceOver on Mac and NVDA on Windows do
not attempt to repair bad code and rely on developers doing the right
thing to begin with. This philosophical difference means comparisons of
compatibility between Jaws and any other screen reader/browser combo
just isn't going to match.

That happens here as well. Apple probably will tell you that it depends how the

I recently discribed to them the issue that VO quite often doesn't interact
with a web page, despite the fact that it's checked in the the VO settings.
They told me it depends on the web side not on VO. My impression is Safari is
not built to support all the possibilities of VoiceOver. And so it seems not to
work reliablly. But I wonder why it works in Internet Explorer and Jaws on the
same side. Maybe the structure of Internet Explorer allows a better
compatibility to a screen reader. I don't know. But if it is not a VO issue and
it works in Windows screen readers it might be so.

Hi all,
Every so often, when I load or reload a page, vo will restart. I will hear
"Voiceover on" after several seconds of intense activity from the hard drive,
and things will proceed normally from there. Why would vo be crashing, and are there logs
I could use to pinpoint the problem or at least tell Apple what is going on?

Hey everyone, been meaning to update to mountain lion for a while, and

totally gone and you no longer have to turn voiceover off and back on
again to get around this. Personally I think that Apple should provide
this fix for earlier operating systems as well since that's a bug, not
a feature. Also it does seem to be a bit faster than lion, well worth
the update I think.

Pages on the iPad - naming a document

2012-11-23 Thread Lisette Wesseling
Hi,
Does anybody know how to name a document in pages on an IOS device? There's no
save as option, and no way of renaming a document either. Mine always save as
blank1, which is the name of the template I normally use. I'm sure there has to
be a way to do this, but for the life of me I can't figure it out.
Any ideas welcome
