Re: MBA versus MBP (was selling my mac)

2012-10-23 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
the 11in Air has a line in and out port, its duel purpose. so you can only use
the single port for one thing at one time, but, never the less, the port does
do line in.

Automator, launch application

2012-10-23 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Tracy,
I can't help with automator, but there's another possible way. Have you
considered the VO keyboard commander? You could add a shortcut using the left
or right option key plus one other key to launch Messages. I tend to use the
keyboard commander for launching applications. Even if you do use the keyboard
commander, sounds like it's worth figuring out this automator problem anyway so
I hope you get some responses from people who know more than I.
Best,
Nic

Problem with lagging in Mail definitely seems to be speech-related

2012-10-23 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Mail has been much less responsive, AKA lagging, for me ever since upgrading to
Mountain Lion. I kinda thought it might be that my iMac just couldn't handle
Mountain Lion, but this doesn't make any sense as everything else works really
well. But there seems lots of lag when deleting messages in Mail or moving up
and down in the message list. Particularly if I move up and then back down and
then back up again. Even if using control to stop VO speaking first, this is a
fairly slow method compared to when Mail used to run smoothly. I hope they fix
it up in a future update. Has anyone brought this issue to the attention of
accessibil...@apple.com yet?
Cheers
Nic

I just saw a note on the vi-phone list sent by a guy who said he was using

RE: samnet on a Mac?

2012-10-23 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Let me clarify again that there are some things you can do with safari
just fine, such as checking and sending mail for instance, and some that
will require chrome, though I haven't tried samnet this way yet. It is
also possible to receive and send Samnet mail, as I believe John pointed
out, on Apple mail and I am also doing this via Alpine in linux on vmware
fusion.

I just saw a note on the vi-phone list sent by a guy who said he was using
his Macbook and sending from Samnet. I didn't think it was possible to use
samnet on a Mac. I'm sending this note here in the hope that the gentleman
who sent that note to vi-phone is also subscribed here; the question seems
off topic for vi-phone.

Re: Automator, launch application

2012-10-23 Thread Traci
Hi Nic,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I've been successful with the vo keyboard
commander. I accidentally came across the idea of Automator, and then I wanted
to learn more.

I was disappointed to hear the Apple Accessibility doesn't help with such
things. They can make sure I can open Automator, but they can't teach me
anything about it.

I would really like to find some Mac/Voiceover classes or learning tools. Lol,
sometimes I get tired of teaching myself.

I think for now, I'll go back to the Vo commander idea.

Thanks,
Traci

Re: Batch Exporting In GarageBand

2012-10-23 Thread Gavin Grundlingh
Yep, each recording is on a separate track. The problem is, not all tracks
start from the beginning of the file, so using the raw .aif files in the media
folder of the .band file is not an option.

Yeah, reloaded and got it back.
But there do seem to be problems and I have a fast cable connection so it isn't

best bluetooth headphones

2012-10-23 Thread Tammy
Hi all,

I’m finding that my phone isn’t loud enough for me to hear it while I’m walking
and using gps apps, so I’m thinking about buying a small earpiece so I can hear
my phone. Does anybody have any recommendations? I was thinking about
something by blueant like the q1 or similar but I want something that won’t
impeed my ability to hear things around me especially on only one side. On the
bus it would be okay but I would be concerne about safety when I was crossing
streets since I tend to vear at the best of times.

Thanks for any help:

Tammy

Website Accessibility

2012-10-23 Thread Harry Hogue
hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has tips or advice about how to navigate in a website
that uses menu items and unlabeled buttons. I know you can label individual
buttons, but the menu items don't seem to be working. The website is
www.freetm.com, which is a cloud-based translation software called Wordfast for
professional translators. I have to complete a project for one of my classes
using htis service, but I can't get the menu items to apepar under "File," for
example. I've tried space, I've tried moving the mouse and clicking, and I've
tried pressing return.

I was able to create an account by entering a e-mail and password, but beyond
that I'm not sure. I could have someone sighted tell me what the unlabeled
buttons are so I coudl label them, but wouldn't they be unlabeled again if I go
to another page?

I remember that in the iTunes Store, when playing song samples, the "Preview"
button used to be labeled to VoiceOver, and now it simply says "Button." I
labeled this one time, but I noticed that it only applied to that single
button, although all of the buttons in the iTunes Store for "Preview" were
identical.

Thanks for any help, guys.

Harry

Re: Live stream ofApple Event

2012-10-23 Thread Cameron Strife
Hi. The iPad fourth gen, iPad mini and the new iMacs were the best
things in the presentation in my opinion. The updates to the mac mini
will also be great for those who use a mini...

I had serious issues with the streaming event. It was very
frustrating. I had to reload every minute or two and every time the
stream did return, I had missed a certain amount of content. It turned
an experience I was looking forward to into a hair pulling frustration
fest.

Cameron.

Um, I doubt that. It's not even going in that direction as of yet. Developer
tweaks are a fact of life on any system, and these guys are doing a commendable
job thus far.

As for the stream, it quit on me in the middle of the wrapping-up phase. So be
it. …

Oh wait, it's on again. Try the stream again; it's a repeat.

2012-10-23 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Harry,

I've set up an email address and password for this site and on the next page, I
can interact with the menu bar and the buttons all have Help tags that can be
read with VO-Shift-h. The Help tags also give the shortcut keys for each
button, but they seem to be for Windows PCs as some of them use the Insert key.

I hope this helps a bit.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Website Accessibility

2012-10-23 Thread Harry Hogue
Hi Anne,

I've figured it out; thanks very much. I used VO-shift-N to read the Voiceover
hint, which helped me out, in case that is useful for anyone else. What I
didn't realize is that the items showed up at the bottom of the page instead of
immediately under the File menu.

Thanks,

harry

Audacity question

2012-10-23 Thread Joanna West

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to split some music I have into individual files using audacity. Can
anyone tell me how to fast forward through each track I make? I don't want to
sit here and listen to every song all the way through as that would take way
too long. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much.

there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting. Psalms

Left/right arrows move by small increments, add shift to move by larger ones. I
think comma and period move back and forth as well, but move your selection
cursor along with them. As with arrows, add shift to jump by larger time
blocks. You can set just how much these jumps are in settings if you want to.

Re: Audacity question

Yes, though I believe it will move the position even when stopped. Space always
starts from the current cursor position, or plays the selected region if you
mark both sides, so pressing space when the music is stopped should start where
you are positioned.

Re: Live stream ofApple Event

2012-10-23 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi guys
Somebody on this list said something about if they keep tweaking iBooks, that
it would become unusable by voiceover users. Why, you have underestimated the
power screaming. You don't really think we would be quiet about it if it did do
you?
Anyway, I thought it was a very good Presentation. I missed the live streaming,
so I ended up downloading it from a website about an hour later. I want to see
the little iPad. I still won't one. Haven't bought one yet though. Notice the
word yet.

Okay, I'm apparently not doing something right. Pressing the arrow

there anything else I should be doing? Sorry, I might be a bit dense.

Re: samnet on a Mac?

2012-10-23 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi Cheryl. I know that I can use SamNet with Safari but I prefer using the
Socializer as opposed to Adium or Trillion so I have to use Chrome. I actually
found a pretty good voice for the Chromevox extension, she never crashes the
program at all. Oh, geting back to my socializer comment, the reason why I like
using Socializer more is because for some reason with this new update to Growl,
if Growl and Voiceover talk at the same time, Voiceover for some reason stops
talking.

Re: working with ladio cast

2012-10-23 Thread Timothy Clark Music
it's background noise witch people magically think can go away such as a vacuum
or something like that.
use a noise gate if need be.
or if you are using an internal mic on your mac then go into system
preferences and go to sound under input and check your ambient noise box.
i should worn you though, there's only so much you can do with taking out
noise. it can be an easy task depending on how much is there and then it can be
extremely hard or next to impossible to do it sometimes. i don't use condenser
mic's so i don't need to worry about it but again, money is tight for us all. i
had to do some serious saving to get the things i have now. praise the lord

Re: Getting a directory list

2012-10-23 Thread Steve Holmes
This might sound a bit geeky because I'm going to suggest a command to use in
Terminal. So here it goes.

1. Go into the Terminal app
2. Type cd followed by the name of the folder you want to work in.
3. You can verify which folder you're actually in by typing 'pwd' with out the
quotes and see the name of the folder it gives back to you.

4. Now type 'ls -1 >files.txt' without the quotes.
This command lists all the files in the current directory or folder with each
file name on a separate line. the ">files.txt" tells the system to redirect
the output of the ls command into a file called files.txt. From here, you can
go back to familiar territory
with the finder and view this file in that folder with any normal text editor.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Steve
I knew it could be done, I just didn't know how and you help. I will say this

Re: Audacity question

2012-10-23 Thread Alex Hall
I am pretty sure comma and period move the selection cursor, but the help file
and google are really the best place to be sure. Google can also show you the
Audacity discussion email list which may be more helpful than my basic
knowledge.

To mark, you play the file with space. When you hear the start of the selection
you want, press left bracket. Press right bracket to mark the end of the
selection. As noted previously, space will now play the selected region. A few
other useful commands for marking are:
shift-j: select from cursor position to start
shift-k: select from cursor position to end
cmd-k: delete selected region
Again, google will be of more use here. There is a nice tutorial floating
around somewhere; it was written for windows, but most of it translates well
enough.

Do I do that while the music is playing? Also, how do I know where the
 cursor is?

Re: setting the clock on the Ipad

2012-10-23 Thread Cheree Heppe
Cheree Heppe here:

The IPad has the same settings as the IPhone.

I think that, on the home screen, you find and enter settings, scroll down to
time and date, which is down near the bottom of the list inside general. I
have set time automatically chacked.

Then, you get out by double tapping the back buttons for the ones you entered
until you're back at the home screen again.

Regards,
Cheree Heppe

Automator, launch application

2012-10-23 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi Tracy,
There's a good podcast series called Mac Automation Made Simple by Ben W
something. It's not from a VoiceOver perspective, but it should let you know
what you can do and then you can figure out how to achieve the same outcomes
with VoiceOver. If you're interested and have trouble finding it let me know
and I'll give you more information or the link or something.
Cheers,
Nic

Re: New Google Groups Interface

2012-10-23 Thread Shen
First, make sure you are signed into Google.
Then copy and paste the following URL:
http://groups.google.com/?noredirect=true

This will give you the classic Googlegroups view. I don't know how long this
will be available.
