I am pretty sure comma and period move the selection cursor, but the help file and google are really the best place to be sure. Google can also show you the Audacity discussion email list which may be more helpful than my basic knowledge.
To mark, you play the file with space. When you hear the start of the selection you want, press left bracket. Press right bracket to mark the end of the selection. As noted previously, space will now play the selected region. A few other useful commands for marking are: shift-j: select from cursor position to start shift-k: select from cursor position to end cmd-k: delete selected region Again, google will be of more use here. There is a nice tutorial floating around somewhere; it was written for windows, but most of it translates well enough.
