Re: Replying to Posts on this Forum
Hi Nick Unless absolutely necessary, I never use Safari for email. I use the mail program instead. Then you don't have to do all that. Is there a reason you are using Safari instead of the mail program? Help with Xcode
I installed Xcode last spring under Lion and basically forgot about it since; it is at the root of my homebrew setup for unix commands. I see now that after upgrading to Mountain Lion that my installation of Xcode is no good anymore. It is version 4.2.1 or so and claims that it needs a version compatible with OSX 10.8. I can't remember how I got Xcode in the first place and it is not in my list of app store purchases. What do I need to do here? Any tips for this dummy? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. To post to this group, send email to macvisionaries@googlegroups.com. Re: Help with Xcode
I ran into this yesterday, and google explained it. The problem is that you need the latest XCode, 4.4, but the update does not appear in the app store when you check for updates. Instead, find XCode on the app store and download it again. Once it installs, launch it (the one in /applications, not the one in your developer folder). It will download some needed component, then take you to a screen where you can delete previous versions. This removes the developer folder, and maybe a couple others as well, so make sure you save everything important in /developer before continuing if you decide to uninstall old versions as I did. Hello, It is no different with any other service out there. They have to see the screen in order to solve the captcha. What I recommend is that you fill out the captcha before filling in any of the form. perhaps send in the captcha and begin filling in the form while you are waiting for it to come back. Bootcamp Issues
Hello everyone. I have been running Windows in Bootcamp for the past several days and it worked very well until yesterday. When I was in the niddle of a session everything locked up in normal Windows fashion. After doing a hard shutdown and rebooting, I get a bblack screen and nothing happens. Did this happen to any of you? How do I boot into Windows Safe Mode in Bootcamp? Finally, I assume that I can boot from the Windows CD by holding down Option C. Of course, in true Windows fashion, none of this is accessible. I'm just trying to get Windows back. Any help is appreciated. Thanks so much. Hello, I was just about to sen dan e-mail to all users because I saw that someone had this problem. I fixed the error that made it be empty, but the error was that you didn't select a payment method. TANSTAAFL (was Re: ZCaptcha Released)
Speaking of this expression of Mr. Heinlein, if anyone hasn't looked at it lately, Bombich Software no longer offers Carbon Copy Cloner on a voluntary donation basis. You get to try it for 30 days and buy it if you like it. If you donated before a certain date in July of this year, you can get the 3.5x version registration code sent to you. I am happy to say, "I donated". Now, the price or CCC is $39.95, whereas, the price or Super Duper! is $27.95. Both programs do similar things, but, have different feature sets. I have both programs, but, have used CCC for backup a little more than Super Duper!. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. VoiceOver Weirdos under Mountain Lion
Hello all. All of a sudden VoiceOver was acting very weird. Lol! For example, I could not interact with the HTML content in Messages, nor could I interact with the messages table in Mail. Since I did not know what to do despite restarting VoiceOver several times and even restarting my Macbook Pro, I decided to reset all my VoiceOver preferences. Well guess what? That worked a treat didn't it! It has at least solved my problems interacting with the messages table in Mail. So if you have any weirdos with VoiceOver, give this a shot. You can reset all VoiceOver preferences in the VoiceOver Utility, under the file menu. Hope this is of some use. Re: Help with Xcode
Thanks Alex, for helping with Xcode. I got it and it now appears in the App store's list of purchased items. I have it installed now and it works again. Problem still is homebrew thinks xcode is still not installed. It can't find the /usr/bin/cc command. Sure enough, cc is not in /usr/bin. I wonder if that got installed by home-brew and ripped out by Mountain Lion upgrade or something. Guess I will have to look around in the trash for cc in the developer folder or something. Bottom line: I can't use homebrew to install any unix commands yet. Wonder what else I'm missing. On Sep 15, 2012, at 4:40 AM, Alex Hall wrote: > I ran into this yesterday, and google explained it. Re: Remote Logon
Logmein is able to put through the sound, but, after you log on to a computer, it's hard to gain focus, you have to move the physical mouse in a funny way. the iPhone app sort of works, but, if you use a bluetooth keyboard, VO wants to hold on to its keyboard commands which makes it a bit difficult to use the computer your loged on to. also, the cost is rather high, you have to pay for each computer logmein is running and its around $40 per year for each 1. This would be fine if I did it on a regular basis, but, not for the 1 or 2 times a year I might use it. Re: Help with Xcode
Hi Steve, I don't use homebrew, although I do use Xcode for some unix and Linux related operations. The answer to your issue that starting with the previous version of Xcode (4.3) you have to manually install the Xcode command line tools. Without this step, homebrew will not fins any of the command line tools. To do this, open Xcode, click on the Xcode menu, and select preferences. Navigate to Downloads in the toolbar, and in the default selected "Components" tab, use the "Check and Install Now" button. According to Stack Overflow, there's also a separate Installation package available via: https://developer.apple.com/downloads/index.action?=Command%20Line%20Tools%20%28OS%20X%20Mountain%20Lion%29 I hope the link does not wrap; I'll try to create a shortened link: http://bit.ly/MOosQk That requires an Apple Developer's login to use. This package enables UNIX-style development via Terminal by installing command line developer tools, as well as Mac OS X SDK frameworks and headers. Many useful tools are included, such as the Apple LLVM compiler, linker, and Make. If you use Xcode, these tools are also embedded within the Xcode IDE, and can be installed on your system using the Downloads preferences pane within Xcode 4.3 and later. This package requires Mac OS X 10.7.3 or later. You'll have to check this out yourself, since I haven't tried these installations myself, and the link could be for an older version. However, manually installing the command line tools should work, and if run into problems at least you will know where to start looking for answers as far as homebrew goes -- that's the sticking point for why you're getting your error messages. MP3 tagger [was Re: DJ software anyone?]
Hi Steve, Darcy Burnard recommended ID3 Editor by Pa-software, which can also be run from a command line interface, if you wish: http://www.pa-software.com/id3editor/ ID3 Editor v1.18.18 £10.00 (GBP), €12.00 (Euro) or $15.00 (USD) By the way, an easy way to locate tracks you've just added to iTunes is to navigate to the "Recently Added" smart playlist in the sources table. Then move to the corresponding songs table with VO-Command-T. This is simply a smart playlist that keeps track of items you've added to iTunes, that are not podcasts, in the last two weeks, by default in time order. You could always edit the rules to change the time interval, or to make your own smart playlist criteria. HTH. Re: how to read in bokle?
Hi Egbert, Bookle can only be used to read DRM-free ePub books. If you purchased Lee Child's newest novel from iBooks, there is currently no way to read any iBooks which are encoded with Apple's FairPlay 2 digital rights management on a Mac -- whether you're using VoiceOver or not. If you purchased this novel from some source that uses Adobe's ADE (Adobe Digital Editions) DRM -- such as from Kobo Books -- and want to read this on the Mac instead of with the Kobo app on your iOS device, then you can do this using Adobe Digital Editions Preview, which you can download from: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/digitaleditions1-8/ I'm just guessing that as a recent best-seller your ebook has some kind of DRM, whether it's FairPlay 2 from iBooks, or the more widespread ADE DRM from Adobe. Bookle will not be able to let you (or any sighted reader) read that book if it has DRM. In response to a later question from Alex, Bookle is available from the Mac App Store: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bookle/id496158508?mt=12 HTH. more hints for new users: using contacts app
Hi all, I just added about 30 names to my contacts at once, all of which I wanted to be in a certain group. That, plus other experiences, taught me a lot about how contacts works and I wanted to pass it along. 1. When you create a new contact, there is not the usual "save" or "done" button to complete it. Rather, it saves automatically. 2. When creating a new contact, you are placed in a scroll area inside of a group, so stop interacting twice to get back to the main contacts window; again, no save button of any kind is needed. 3. If you press cmd-1 to get into group view mode, vo-left from the search box will bring you to the groups table, though tab skips right over it. Use this to select the group you want to view (cmd-shift-n creates a new group). If you are in this view and create a new contact, that contact is added to the group you have selected in the groups table. Simply select the "all contacts" group to not put the new contact in any group. 4. To add a contact to a group, find it in the contacts table and press cmd-c. Move to the groups table, find the destination group, and paste with cmd-v. From the contacts table you also have a few other options accessed with the menus or the context menu that are worth looking at. 6. To view a contact's details, select the person from the table of contacts, then vo-left to the contact information group. Interact, then interact with the information scroll area in the group and you can move through all the fields, making changes if you want to. The only problem is that you cannot simply cancel an accidental change, though I expect the undo command is available here. Hope this helps someone. Contacts really confused me at first, but I'm getting it now, and I just love watching all that hard work pop up automagically in the contacts app on my iPod, and even in the proper group. Re: Help with Xcode
Thank you so much for the extra info. Last version of Xcode I have was 4.2.1 so jumping to 4.4 surely well brought out these differences. I will take a look at your links and hopefully get this figured out. I don't have an Apple developer login so hopefully I can just get the command line stuff and proceed from there. Some day I would like to join the Apple Developers network and really get down with Mac and IOS development but I have so much time in a day so things are moving more slowly for me than I really wish. Thank you again, not only for this answer but for so many fully detailed answers you have provided on this list. I hate to say it but just about every message from you is such a valid resource I almost keep every Esther message in my mail archives for future reference. Yeah, I found out that recently and found that to be handy for some files I recently brought in and found not to have any tag info on them. Thanks for the mention of this editor; have to give it a look. Re: Replying to Posts on this Forum
Hi Gigi and Teresa, Thanks for replying! I am using the Apple Mail client and receiving the digest version of the posts. I’m using this for reading the posts which works fine. My problem is with replying. How do you reply from Mail? If you simply reply to the digest email, how does it know which thread you are replying to? Do you need to write something specific in the subject field? Thanks for the help! I really appreciate it. Re: DJ software anyone?
If such a program existed I’d be really upset because it would have saved me so much time and effort when switching to using iTunes. IN Windows 7 you can, however, add some limited tags to music files in Windows Explorer. It’s limited to artist, title and genre, but this would be the main tags you’d want to use to keep your music organised when you import it into iTunes. This process of tagging in Windows Explorer is a little tricky from an accessibility stand point (at least with JAWS), but it’s doable. The other app you may be interested in is Song Genie, which will help tag your music once it is in iTunes. Thanks Risette and Timothy for your help. Can you just reply like that (hitting CMND R) from a digest email? Does the reply get placed in the correct thread? Hi Nick I don't know about digest emails - sorry. I get the regular ones. Command R is the generic reply command. I think shift command r is reply to all, but I don't use that normally.
