You can simply press escape to get out of this menu. Extras is more like a collection of icons than a menu. It's set up near the menu bar. Re: Updating to ML
Hi, Good luck with your update! I'm only familiar with Lion, so don't know all the differences, but I'd be glad to help if I can. Some of the biggest things probably are the new messages app, that will replace iChat, and also iOs-type Notification center. The upgrade process itself should be smooth, but just in case, back up your system before you do it. There are some little changes in app names, because Apple is trying to bring MacOs closer to iOs. For example, iCal is no longer iCal, but calendar. Address book is now contacts. That sort of stuff. Then there is this new menu thing, that allows us to access things that weren't so easily accessible before -- like Dropbox menu. So after you update, there will be menu called "Extras. You get there by pressing vo+m twice. You move through extras by pressing vo+arrow keys and when you find the menu you want to choose, press vo+space to open it. Some people on MacVisionaries mailing list complain, that spotlight menu can no longer pe accessed by vo+triple m, but it can still be found through the extras. I know there are people on this list who know a lot more about this than I do, but this was my two cents. Personally I love mountain lion, especially the possibility to send iMessages from my Mac and then the new dictation function. Good luck! Re: Using Eclipse on the Mac
John, Sorry for the late response. I don't do a lot of looking at this list anymore. Eclipse is written by IBM so there is a bit more of a chance that it is accessible. It is written in java, however. You should be able to download it from developerworks within the IBM site. Eclipse is a framework for building development environments and has several plug-ins. My direct experience was with the NetCool mib2rules system that could parse an SNMP MIB and produce rules files used to create NetCool alarms. I used it on windows, but there was also a linux installer. With Windows even when I dropped the access bridge into the special JRE directory I was not able to get the installer to work. However the system worked with a few flukes once installed. Considering the Macintoshes better handling of interacting with regions of the screen and the fact that IBM used SWING to develop the UI you might have some luck with this. You might want to also ask one of the Macintosh blind friendly developers list. 1password storing attachments with an item
Hi Robert Carter and hopefully others, I'm finding more uses and work arounds for 1password every so often, and I'm looking for one now too. I can't seem to store a file attachment with an item in 1password for mac. I have a software license that I'd like to store, and filling that out and having it saved went just fine, as long as you use the navie 1password app, and not the safari extension. According to the 1password documentation, it's possible to store a file or 2, together with an item, in this case a software license that I bought. I'd like to store the payment and the license code messages along with the 1password license item. There is an attachments area, and the docs say, that we need to drag a file into it, for the attachment to be stored inside the AgileBits 1password keychain. But pasting files from the finder won't work. Do you know of an accessible way of getting a file from the finder, over to the attachments area in the 1password application? Re: tagging people on Facebook?
Hi Donna, I just tried it. It seems only to work if you've tabbed into the field. So what seems to work is if you point the voiceover curser on the status field, hit tab and then shift tab to be entered again onto the status field. Then begin typing the name, and hit down arrow for the first suggestion. Hi Paul, I haven't tried this myself, but I am wondering if the drag and drop features of VoiceOver will do what you want. Just make sure that both the finder window and the 1password window are visible on screen at the same time. Re: In search of accessible password vault
Hi, By the time of this writing, 1Password is accessible, as long as you stick with the app itself, and don't bother with its safari extension, other than auto filling in a login once you are on that page. You can easily google 1password, but to answer your questions: yes it is multi platform, it is for mac, windows and ios, probably android but I'm not sure of that, and it can sync via dropbox, amogn other ways. Having your encrypted keychain in dropbox means, that you manage your chain yourself, and it is not stored online somewhere. I have both the mac and the iphone version, and they are workable. If tiny things were improved in their interfaces, life would become a whole lot easier for VoiceOver users. But for now, it already works for all sorts of things, like your web logins, say, for the skype site, for your banking site, the vm ware site if you use that and all things similar, but there's a lot more. It can also hold identities. Difference with a login is that an identity is similar in that it is also a keychain element, but it obviously is made up of other fields. In an identity, you store your name, street city and zip code, phone number etc etc, and if a website asks for those, you can have 1password fill in some or all of that. The 1password app has essentially a simple interface, where you have a list of things on the left, such as logins, identities, secure notes, wallet items, software license keys and more, and if you click one of these things in the sidebar, which is where they all are, then that contents will appear on the right. If you open, for instance, the logins item from the sidebar, they appear on the right, in what VoiceOver calls an object list. This is simply a list view where you arrow up and down, to find the login you want. You can open or edit your login info from there. The same holds for all other items. If you want to add a software license for example, just go to the sidebar, find software licenses, stop interacting with the sidebar, and move over to the right. There you have an interactable object list with all your license items so far, if any, and to the right of that list, at least from a voiceover perspective, you then have an add item, button. Once the new dialog opens, you'll find that you can read all text fields in there. I'm still looking into several work arounds to get stuff into the interface, and yes for VoiceOver users, things have room for improvement. Where the smooth magic is already there for regular users, we'll have to wait for, or get involved in, more VoiceOver support. Small amendments can make a lot of difference for VoiceOver. I bought 1password and it serves my needs, although it is still clunky for us in some ways. For example. It has a strong password generator, which is handy on sites where you either change your existing login into a new login with a strong password, or where you create a new account. Of course, you can use the strong password generator just anywhere, like for apps on your mac, for your time capsule password if you have one, your wifi network etc, all strong passwords. The password generator creates an unguessable strong password consisting of letters numbers symbols etc, and the settings for that are just fine and readable inside the 1password app. But, generating a new strong password, unless someone can come up with an alternative, requires me to leave safari on the "create account" page, open the 1password app because you want to avoid the safari extension because of its lack of accessibility, and then unlock the 1password app, find the password generator in the sidebar, tweak its options, have your password generated, copy that to the blipboard, move back to safari, find the text field for your new password, paste it in, and hit create account on the site, hoping that a 1password question will pop up from its safari extension and remain readable without VoiceOver setting focus back to the site so that you can complete this dialog, asking to save this login for future use. It is very clear how the safari extension that comes with 1password, can make life a whole lot easier, by being able to do everything from your browser, rather than from the 1password app. It's just that we don't have that functionality yet as of now. The idea of having your own keychain in dropbox under your own control is wonderful, as is the rest of the app. 1Password is in the mac app store and in the ios app store if you want it. If you become a listener of the mac power users podcast, which is a repo with a lot of interesting talk and knowledge, then they have a promo code to get a little discount. I'd rather not write what that is, though, for obvious reasons. Just take a listen to mac power users, and you will hear things you never knew before. That show is excellent, and it's what made me buy 1password. Find the mac power users podcast on itunes, or in things like downcast

Re: Unable to determine people's answers to my questions on EHarmony
Hello, Based on my experience, the best approach I have found to determine potential partner answers is to use Windows and JAWS. Once focus is placed or highlighted on the set of possible answers, hit the down-arrow key and press insert-F to hear if the text is bold. Once you locate the bold text, then you will know this is the answer choice that has been selected. I have not used EHarmoney in several months, but since my use of this online dating agency, it has been my experience that JAWS works best with this site. If anyone has other questions feel free to reply or correspond privately. Cheers. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. New to Group
Hello to All, I have only been in this group for a few days and I have already learned alot from you guys. I purchased my mac about 11 months ago and was a windows xp user before that. I am visually impaired and used ZooomText on my xp. On my mac laptop I use a combination of voiceover and zoom to navigate around. My wife is totally blind and uses Jaws with Vista. She is thinking of taking the plunge and getting a mac laptop or iPad. I am wondering if there are any totally blind users in this group and how accessible it will be for her. She already has an iPhone and does with it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Re: Unable to determine people's answers to my questions on EHarmony
Ah, but not to be contrary. This is the mac visionaries list. Although it's highly probable that most users have access to a windows screen reader, we can't assume such, as any and all work arounds involving windows screen readers are off topic for the list. Plus, it's safe to assume that even if our users have access to a windows screen reader, in posting here they are looking for a mac based solution. RE: New to Group
Hello Ben. If your wife doesn't do anything that requires the use of Microsoft Office she will do well with the Mac. If, however, she needs to use Microsoft Office then her best bet would be to use Microsoft Windows for Microsoft Office related tasks. There is IWork on the Mac but the accessibility of these products has not reached the level of maturity I require as they relate to accessibility. If she wants to use Windows on her Mac, she has two viable options, VMware Fusion or Bootcamp. If she uses VMWare Fusion, then she will be able to install Windows without sighted assistance. Windows and the MAC Operating systems run at the same time. JAWS works in this environment with Windows and so does Office. There are tradeoffs however. First, since the Operating systems share resources there can be performance issues particularly with applicatios like Kurzweil 1000 and Open Book. On the other hand, if she decides tu use Bootcamp then she will have a dual boot system. She will need sighted assistance to install Windows. However, the OS that is running has all of the machine's resources. Finally, whenever she makes changes to VMWare Fusion, she loses a JAWS activation. Freedom Scientific will give her grief if she needs to request too many key resets. A Question Regarding Braille Display Proof Reading
Hello Everyone, OK, so far I have been unable to get this to work in Windows 7 using Jaws so now I'm considering using my Mac with either Pages or Text Edit. To be honest, I don't care what I use as long as I can get the job done. My objective: I need to proof an extremely long MS Word document. All I want is for there to be some kind of indicator on my Braille display denoting a misspelled word. Can this be done using the Mac? I want to proof this document with speech turned off. So, as I read, if there is a misspelled word, there will be some kind of indicator so that when my fingers pass over the word, I'll know something, according to the spell checker, is wrong. If anyone can shed some light on this, it would be greatly appreciated. For the record, Jaws is supposed to have a setting for this but, as yet, I have been completely unsuccessful in getting it to work Thank you all in advance, Mark -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Erik, In my experience running VO under Lion and the latest version of Safari, the match's answers will appear immediately below yours on the actual match page. For example: What is your favourite dipping sauce at McDonald's? Sweet and sour. Sweet and sour. The second line is your match's answer. Hope this is helpful. Re: How to get to the toolbar in Mail
YOu know, you don't need the toolbar to forward. Just press command shift F to forward. YOu don't even have to have the message open. GV Connect on the iPhone requires an external SIP client. I use Talkatone for that on the phone. I'm wondering if it needs a separate sIP client on the Mac as well. Should be able to text though without that. Re: google voice
OK. I got the GV Connect to work. But it's pretty useless. I at least did something outgoing so far. But it just allowed you to select one of your Google phones to place the call through it. didn't allow you to use the Mac to make the call because it doesn't have a sIP client. So not sure it really saves anything. If Voice-Mac is working, looks like that is a more complete service. Getting an Application Key in windows.
Hi All. I have mapped my keys in Fusion under the Key mapping tab when using jaws. However, I do not know how to get an Application key under key mapping although I have tried. I want to map the right option key but each time I do and when going back in windows, when pressing the right option key it just says 'search edit' if any one has any ideas of how to do this, please could you write the steps for me as that will be appreciated. When I use to use Sharp Keys it use to work but for some reason it isn't working in key mapping and I can't find where this option is set in the first place for me to remove it or to edit it and to make it change its behaviour. I am using windows 7 Ultimate. Thanks in advance. Kawal. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: google voice
Yes, I have both GV Connect and Voice-Mac installed. GV connect definitely is strictly a google conduit with no way to connect to sIP that I can see. That would come from a third party. I found the actual app for Voice-Mac and have my Google Voice set up in it but don't see how to set up or activate the sIP. You don't need a separate SIP account right? The Google part works great but so far it still is requiring other phones to be present to win. These things always drive me nuts. Re: New to Group
Hey Ben. Welcome to the list. I've had my Mac for 2 years this November and I really like it. Even though I have a little vision, it's not enough to see the screen so I only use Voiceover. And contrary to what Paul was saying, I've used a combination of Iwork and Textedit and I've had no problems with neither one. Pages works like it should, and that's all I really need. HTH and I hope your wife takes the plunge. She'll have a lot of support if she does.
