Mail in Mountain Lion

2012-08-15 Thread Rahul Bajaj
Hi all,

I downloaded Mountain Lion just a couple of days ago.
It seems to be pretty good, but I'm having some trouble with Mail.
I can't figure out how to read messages.
For most messages, it says something like 'No subject, no sender'.
What does that mean?

Also, I can't find the folders that I made for receiving mails from specific
email IDs.
For example, I made a folder for receiving mails from the Macvisionaries list
which I can't find.

Your help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Rahul

It also happens quite a lot at the beginning when you just opened Mail and it

 Hi Harry,

I'll paste in here my instructions I posted in a different thread with the
steps you can use to get rid of the Preview Pane in Mountain Lion Mail.

 1. Removing the Preview Pane in Classic layout:

 • Navigate to the Horizontal Splitter that is to the right of the Messages
 table.
 • Press VO-cmd-f5 (add FN if needed). This will bring the mouse to the VO
cursor and announce where the mouse is and it should read "Horizontal
 Splitter".
 • Double-click on your Trackpad or alternatively, you can press near the
top of the Trackpad and drag to the bottom. Make sure in this case that
you actually make the Trackpad button depress so that the drag action will
 work.

 2. Removing the Preview Pane for non-Classic layout:

 • Navigate to the Vertical Splitter just to the right of the Messages
 Column Group.
 • Press VO-cmd-f5 (add FN if necessary) to bring the mouse to the VO
cursor. It will announce Vertical Splitter if it did what it was supposed
 to do.
 • Double-click on the Trackpad or alternatively, put your finger near the
left hand side of the Trackpad, then drag to the far right and release.
As in the first case, make sure that you depress the Trackpad button so
that the dragging process will occur.

Note that in the Classic layout, you are dealing with a Horizontal
Splitter and in the non-Classic layout, you are dealing with a Vertical
Splitter. Each case requires a different dragging direction if you choose
 that option.

There are a couple of ways of determining if it worked. Firstly, you can
navigate around the Mail screen and if you don't hear anything about
"Message Content Area", life is good.

The second method is a little more complicated but tells you for sure. In
Classic layout, navigate to the Horizontal Splitter to the right of the
"New Mailbox Action" menu. You'll notice two Horizontal splitters, one
after the Messages Table and this one that I'm talking about. Once you've
located this Horizontal Splitter, Interact with it and press VO-down. Vo
will announce "Collapsed" which is what you want to hear. In non-Classic
layout, navigate to the Vertical Splitter just to the right of the
Messages Column Group and Interact with it. Press VO-right and VO will
announce "Collapsed" if the Preview pane is gone.

 HTH.

 Later...

As far as I'm concerned, setting up the rules / filters on gmail is the only
way to go because I use IMAP and want the same configuration available on all
computers and mail clients that I use. Mail works fine with the separate

I have the checkbox for showing related messages actually unchecked so that

Re: Calendar Appointments on the Mac

2012-08-15 Thread Steve Holmes
I have at minimum, two events on my calendar; one is in December 2011 and one
today in August of 2012. On my iPod, the event list shows these two and I
think some others left over. On the Mac in Day view, these do not appear in a
single list. I only see events for today. I believe the events list will be
only for the given day in view. I'm using events that are not marked as all
day events; these all have start and end times if that makes a difference. I
see a scroll area which is for all day events but I don't have any of those
scheduled now.

You have to switch to day view to see a list. Personally I think a list
view should be added to the toolbar.

I wrote to Apple expressing my disappointment with Calendar and felt it
should be more intuitive, be more iOS like and require less interacting.

This is my observation of the app as you explore, starting with the
 toolbar:

There is the toolbar which you can interact with. I think another view
should be added to the calendar view switcher. I think there should be a
"List View". This would make the calendar behave more like iOS. I also
think the Today button should be moved to the toolbar as well as a button
for invitations and for adding a new calendar.

After you stop interacting with the toolbar, there is the vertical
splitter (why do we need to care about this? I would rather not hear VO
announce this. I can appreciate it is there for when you bring the list
of calendar types into view. Perhaps calendar view should actually be
moved to the view menu at the top of the window. There could be an entry
called Calendars, with a sub menu which you can then place a tick against
the calendar or calendars you which to be be visible such as all
 calendars, home, work, birthdays etc.
) After the vertical splitter, VO says "Friday, 10 August 2012, year,
Calendar area" (this is the date of myself writing this message, and I had
the year view selected) ). I think it would sound better if VO rad all
this out as "Today is the 10th of August 2012, Year view is selected".

Next, as long as you do not interact with the calendar area, there is a
horizontal splitter, yet again, why does VO even need to know this?

I have my calendar currently set to year view, so let's interact with it
 and explore that.

The first item is the previous year button, and the next item is the
today button, should this not say what the current year is? for example
2012? No matter which view I use, the today button is always read out
which is not relevant when in month or year or week view, this should
behave more like iOS. . The next element is next year button.

Next is The 2012 (or whichever year you have selected). VO tells you this
is a grid and tells you how many rows and columns there are. Is this
relevant? and why do we even need to interact with this grid? Should it
not be visible by default? This is one of my biggest complains about the
calendar app, there are too many levels to interact with. Can you imagine
how popular google search would be if you had to follow 6 hyperlinks
before you finally got to the search box?

After interacting, I am told by VO that I am on August, and that is the 8
of 12 and lists the number of columns and rows within that month. Again,
is this relevant? do we really need to know how many ro

Re: Mail in Mountain Lion

2012-08-15 Thread Andrew Lamanche
I'm not sure what setup you used to have before upgrading to mountain lion but
I will tell you how i've sold my problems which were similar to yours.

Firstly, in Mail preferences, I chose to view my messages in classic view.

Secondly, in order to see all your
mailboxes, interact with the list of your mailboxes, and try to expand your
mail mailboxes, you may have to expand your inbox too. Do it with either right
arrow key, which works for me, or vo+\. I have two accounts: iCloud and gmail
and mailboxes under each. So I had to expand both. There's another thing here,
move down the list p;ast your trash and send mailboxes and you will come across
your main accounts names again. You need to expand them too.

In Mountain Lion you have to use vo+right and left arrow keys to move between
mailbox list and message list. You can no longer use tab key. This takes a bit
of getting used to. If you press tab key, it will take you straight into
mailbox actions button which may be a bit confusing.

Hope this will help a little.

Re: wondering about Wine

2012-08-15 Thread Chris Blouch
I haven't used it but that is supposed to be the gist of it. It emulates
the windows APIs (application programming interfaces) so that windows
apps can run without actually having windows installed. This is the idea
behind Crossover

http://www.codeweavers.com/products/

which is based on WINE. In theory then you have much less overhead since
they are just presenting Windows APIs and mapping them to OSX APIs
instead of emulating the entire OS. I suspect this method of emulation
would fail for voiceover or jaws since VO won't be able to access
windows apps (unless they are emulating MSAA, which I doubt) and Jaws
won't have a full screen to inject their video intercept and get their
fingers into. Crossover has a full demo if you want to give it a whirl.

Viewing reminders with Voiceover in ML

Listers,

I know I have reminders present as I have made a few over the past
weeks/months. I can't seem to find a way of viewing them in Mountain Lion. In
Lion, I used to be able to tab to a list of reminders where I could interact
with the table and arrow up an down all the reminders. Any suggestions?

Many thanks

under Lion, I've received the following error message: "Mac & Voiceover is not

know what it means?

Thanks a lot.

Technically speaking, How Does Screen Curtain Actually Work?

2012-08-15 Thread Teresa Cochran
Ok, one of my notorious "just wondering" questions.

I've heard many discussions about whether screen curtain saves battery life in
laptops and the smaller devices. I'm wondering if screen curtain works by
modifying information that's already been passed to the display, or whether it
bypasses the display altogether. If it's used on an Ipod, for example, does it
still use a lot of resources? Does anyone know how it works, technically
speaking?

Thanks,
Teresa

Re: wondering about Wine

2012-08-15 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Ah, but what about screen readers such as NVDA or System access to go? I
figured that there might be some VO issues; but, if one could get NVDA
running…oops, that would depend on windows API's too would it not? Same issue
would crop up I reckon.

Thoughts?

Okay, maybe I'd just better say why I want to know. It looks like
www.audible.com
may be utterly unwilling to consider making their audible manager Mac
compatible for activation of such third party players as Victor Reader Stream
or APH book Port plus. So, since I refuse to install full windows on my Mac, I
reckon there's got to be another solution.

Thoughts?

Re: wondering about Wine

2012-08-15 Thread Rose Waagan
I tried launching NVDA on my Mac using Wine. I heard the tone indicating NVDA
heh started but nothing else after that. I had a large follower base on twitter
before sacking an old account. I asked if anyone had used Wine successfully.
The general consensus seemed to be that it wasn't usable. Some suggested I run
VMWare Fusion instead. I have my own views on this as an alternative, but
that's another thread entirely.

Re: Viewing reminders with Voiceover in ML

2012-08-15 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hello, Andrew,

When you go into reminders, you will have to interact with the reminders card
to go to the lists of reminders. You may have several lists in addition to the
reminder card. Use VO-right and -left to navigate the window. You can also hide
the reminder lists, (i.e. Google to-do, Yahoo, etc.)

Re: Cannot copy track from shared library to my own computer

2012-08-15 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

First, the Copy that you're finding in the Contextual menu is just a Copy/Paste
sort of thing so it will not do what you're hoping. Check on both machines
that you have Home Sharing turned on. Home Sharing is under the Advanced menu.
Home Sharing is different than the Sharing you see in your iTunes Preferences.
Once Home Sharing is on for both machines, when you select the other machine,
there will be both a Settings button and a Copy Items button as well as a
pop-up that can restrict what is shown. I would actually make sure that the
Sharing Library thing in your iTunes Prefs is unchecked as it is unnecessary
when using Home Sharing.

Re: Customising favourites bar in Mountain Lion

2012-08-15 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

It means that VO's Drag and Drop will not work on that kind of item. To remove
things, I've just routed my mouse to the location by pressing VO-cmd-f5 then
using the Trackpad to press down and drag my finger to the bottom of the
Trackpad then letting go. This effectively removes the item from the
Favourites bar.

Re: Technically speaking, How Does Screen Curtain Actually Work?

2012-08-15 Thread Chris Blouch
Not sure on devices but for laptops it just sets the pixels to black, so
the backlight is still running. If you want to save battery you need to
use F1 and turn the screen all the way down. All the way down turns the
backlight off. Likewise using F5 to turn the keyboard backlight all the
way down will also shut those lights off.

Re: Calendar Appointments on the Mac

I have chosen to hide my all day events. in day view the last item is the
event list, it will show your current event, but if you use the arrow keys up
and down without using the the VO keys you can then move between the items of
the list.

I noticed in advanced preferences that there is the option to view events in

Two questions about virtual machines and a brief intro

2012-08-15 Thread Damashe Thomas
Hello List,

My name is Damashe Thomas and I am fairly new to the macvisionaries group. I
live in the great state of Georgia. I have been a very happy iOS user for the
past four years and am preparing to make the move to the mac.
I have two quick questions to get started.
Does anyone have experience with the latest version of parallels and can speak
about the accessibility of that app. Is it a possible option or should I just
go with VMWare fusion?
I like the ability to run windows in a virtual machine when I have to use it,
but has anyone run in to any issues using applications like kurzweil or
openbook in a virtual windows environment?

Thanks
Damashe

Re: wondering about Wine

2012-08-15 Thread Alex Hall
I tried crossover and Winonx, a $5 app that does the same thing. It failed to
run nvda as well as the audio game (which was my primary purpose for trying
it). I have given up and will be investigating virtualbox soon instead of
bootcamp as I rely increasingly on the mac for day-to-day activities. I am
probably going to make the big jump and copy everything over to my mac
partition, then resize it, soon enough. Anyway, virtualization seems to be the
best way to go; I emailed a crossover tech who said that some of the functions
my game needed were not implemented into the version of Wine they were using,
hence the errors. Instead of messing with all that, I'd rather just use a vm I
know will work.

hello,

I run Kurzweil 1000 version 11.03 (I haven't updated that particular software
in a while) under Windows 7 in a VMWare Fusion virtual machine and have no
problems. I need to update to version four of VMWare Fusion for it all to run
under Mountain Lion, but from what I hear others have also had no issues with
it.

Hope this helps,

I've heard many discussions about whether screen curtain saves battery

the display, or whether it bypasses the display altogether. If it's
used on an Ipod, for example, does it still use a lot of resources?
Does anyone know how it works, technically speaking?

Thanks,
Teresa

Re: Growl in Mountain Lion

2012-08-15 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey Missy and Shawn,

Thanks for the responses. I guess first off I just have to play around
with Growl a little more to get used to it. I just installed Trillion
but haven't used it as I found it to be a little inaccessible. Just
installed Meny Tab for Facebook, again need to play around with it. I
did see in the Growl Settings that it listed Night Owl, Yurufiru
pardon the spelling on that. Not sure what you can set Growl to do,
maybe I am just guilty of checking my updates so frequently that
alerts wouldn't really do much for me.

question about speakable items

2012-08-15 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi guys
I have had a little time to mess around with speakable items, and I have run
into a little weird thing. I thought I would change my key from the escape key
to something else. However, when I want to do this I can't getting into
dashboard or something because I can't getting references to widgets. On the
MacBook Pro, should you use the function key together with any of the F5
through F12 keys?
Regards
Gigi

Re: Customising favourites bar in Mountain Lion

You shouldn't need to tur the commander off although I usually have it off as I
accidentally make it do things with my wrists. For the Magic Trackpad, simply
push on the Trackpad itself and you'll notice a click. Make sure it is pressed
down when dragging.

 Hi,

If you have Home Sharing turned on for both machines, with the same Apple
ID, you'll see the other computer in your Sources List under the Devices
section. If there is no Devices section, then your Home Sharing is either
not set up accordingly or there is a network issue. Once you have focus
on the other computer, expand it with VO-back slash, then wait a few
seconds for it to populate, and navigate down to the Music Library or
Playlist you wish to grab songs from. You can then either search with the
Search field or navigate through the Table to locate the items you wish to
transfer. Once selected, Stop Interacting with the Table and navigate
right to the Copy Item button and things will move over. They will not be
placed in any specific playlist, they will simply be copied over to your
Music Library and placed in the Music section within your Sources List.
You can subsequently add them to any playlists you wish. Now, if you had
iTunes Match, it can be configured so that whatever is put in a playlist
in one computer is automatically put in the same playlist in the second
computer. It is a very cool set up, although one has to be willing to
spend the yearly subscription fee to have the iTunes Match service.

I have a feeling that is what is wrong. I just used Spotlight to bring up Java

Re: Viewing reminders with Voiceover in ML

2012-08-15 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Dear Theresa,

Thanks for your tips. I think I am slowly getting there. Once I interact with
the reminder card, I made a mistake of interacting with the list table. I just
needed to use up and down arrow keys to review my reminders. Once I've found
the reminder I wanted to review/have a look at, I pressed enter, and I got a
popup window with the info of the reminder which I was able to modify.

One comment I need to make is that when I pressed info button, the reminder app
has crashed.

Thanks again

Re: Exceedingly scary and confounding problem with on-line banking account

Went into Java preferences, and there appear to be some edit boxes which I have
no clue how to handle. I've tried checking and unchecking enabling plug-ins,
etc., but have the same result on the banking site. I have no idea what else to
do except call Apple. I suspect I'll have to bring it in so they can look over

Do you click anywhere on the trackpad? A bit stumped.

THanks for all your help!

 Hi,

It means that VO's Drag and Drop will not work on that kind of item. To
remove things, I've just routed my mouse to the location by pressing
VO-cmd-f5 then using the Trackpad to press down and drag my finger to the
bottom of the Trackpad then letting go. This effectively removes the item
 from the Favourites bar.

Re: Two questions about virtual machines and a brief intro

2012-08-15 Thread Emilio
Hello Damashe,

First, if you are wanting to exicute the installation and full
operation of Windows on the Mac, I would highly recommend VMware
Fusion.
Reviewing the archives will provide a thorough set of directions that
will help you learn how to install Windows, as should the product web
site.
I'm not an expert and in no way consider myself highly technical, but
I have been able to install and run Windows within 25 minutes of
reading & following the instructions others have kindly posted.
If you purchase Fusion, and insert a university into the college name
you will get a 50% discount, which is a great thing.
I have been able to install and effectively run Kurzweil 1000, as well
as Duxbury 10.7. Moreover, after initial setup, JFW11 has run very
well with no problems on my machine. Once you get your virtual machine
configured, make a snapshot that you can refer to when you need to
virtually reformat. :)
Note you will need considerable hard drive space (at least I do). I
have roughly 40GB set aside for my virtual machine.
If you need any other help or if you wish to discuss this further feel
free to reply - cheers.

I just switched back to Safari from Chrome, here's why

2012-08-15 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
Ever since getting the mac, I was told Chrome would serve me better; it was
faster, easier, and vo would not be "busy" as much. Now, though, I have decided
to make Safari my default browser, and here's why.

* Reader: the reader feature is amazing. I opened an article from twitter and
was faced with a bunch of social network links and other junk I didn't want to
read before I could find the article text. I remembered Reader, and thought I'd
try it. I pressed cmd-shift-r and... wow! The article's title was a level one
heading, and right below that was the article text. This will save a lot of
time in the future.

*Text Selection: I don't need it much, but now that we can select text in
Safari and not in other web browsers, I like knowing I have the option; in
Chrome, this would be impossible, or nearly so

* Speed: I don't find Safari any slower than Chrome, and neither browser gives
me busy messages.

* Downloads: I haven't tried it, but I hear there's a keystroke to show
download progress. I like this, as I had nothing but problems downloading more
than one file in Chrome, even if the files were downloaded separately and not
simultaneously.

* The address bar: in Chrome, cmd-l brings me to a field in which I can type a
url or a search term. That would be fine if it didn't also load a page on whose
content vo focuses, thereby causing me to have to find the address bar all over
again. In Safari, nothing of the kind happens; cmd-l jumps me to a (properly
labeled and hinted) edit field and leaves me there.

That's all I have for now. If anyone has questions, let me know. If anyone is
using Chrome, I suggest you take another look at Safari, especially the latest
version (version 6 I believe).

Have a great day,

ONe thing I'd like to mention before you put money into VMWare. There is an
alternative called Virtualbox. It's interface is not accessible, but it has
full terminal support, so you can set things up that way and never need to
touch the interface. As far as I know, it is free, and works just fine. I have
not tested either product yet, but I wanted to make you aware of this option in
case you wanted to give it a shot. Note that, on the mac, "terminal" is the
same thing as the windows command line, shell prompt, dos prompt, or whatever
you want to call it.

Re: Exceedingly scary and confounding problem with on-line banking account

2012-08-15 Thread Esther
Hi Christine,

I think that you have to log out and log back in again after making
your changes to Java Preferences in order for the changes to take
effect. I assume you mean that you checked the check box for "Enable
applet plug-in and Web Start applications" on the General tab of Java
preferences. If accepting the new certificate, checking that box, and
then exiting Java preferences and logging out and back in again don't
fix things for you then you may have to call Apple. I'll point you to
the instructions for using Mouse Keys to move to the tabs of the Java
Preferemces menu from the mac-access list discussions. I understand
that the entry under System Preferences in ML is now "Accessibility"
and not "Unversal Access", but this should make sense:
• Re: Mouse keys
http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access%40mac-access.net/msg11321.html
That post also gives a link to an earlier post,"Moving your cursor
with
Mouse Keys as an accessibility work around for Java Preferences", with
more detailed instructions. Basically, there are 4 tabs under Java
Preferences: "General", "Security", "Network", and "Advanced". Each
tab takes about 70 horizontal mouse key presses to move across. The
detailed post goes through everything in detail from scratch, but it
does assume you have previously set your verbosity in VoiceOver
Utility to announce what is under the mouse with 0 seconds delay so
VoiceOver can tell you what is under the mouse when you move to these
tabs with mouse keys. You can also move with your TrackPad without
using Mouse Keys if you only have to change tabs once, but if you end
up having to check multiple tabs and go back and forth between tabs in
a single session, it's simply easier to use Mouse Keys because you can
navigate precisely where you need to go.

This has been written up as detailed bug reports to Apple. I think
you only need to log out and log in after you make your changes, but
if you need to look at other entries under Java preferences you can
use the instructions from the mac-access list posts to navigate. I'm
not sure how you can uncheck items within tables on some of the tabs
if you need to, though -- VO announces "empty table" in these cases.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

I should say that turning down the brightness on the Mac does make its

Ok, one of my notorious "just wondering" questions.

I've heard many discussions about whether screen curtain saves

screen curtain works by modifying information that's already been

If it's used on an Ipod, for example, does it still use a lot of
resources? Does anyone know how it works, technically speaking?

Re: I just switched back to Safari from Chrome, here's why

2012-08-15 Thread Christopher-Mark gilland
I'm a little confused about your example with the address bar with command l.
Can you give me step by step something to try in Chrome, then have me try it
again in Safari so I can specifically interactively see the difference in what
you mean? Sorry, I'm just more a hands on person.

Subject: I just switched back to Safari from Chrome, here's why

  Hi all,
Ever since getting the mac, I was told Chrome would serve me better; it was
faster, easier, and vo would not be "busy" as much.

  * Speed: I don't find Safari any slower than Chrome, and neither browser
gives me busy messages.

  * Downloads: I haven't tried it, but I hear there's a keystroke to show
download progress. I like this, as I had nothing but problems downloading more
than one file in Chrome, even if the files were downloaded separately and not
simultaneously.

  * The address bar: in Chrome, cmd-l brings me to a field in which I can type
a url or a search term. That would be fine if it didn't also load a page on
whose content vo focuses, thereby causing me to have to find the address bar
all over again. In Safari, nothing of the kind happens; cmd-l jumps me to a
(properly labeled and hinted) edit field and leaves me there.

That's all I have for now. If anyone has questions, let me know. If anyone is
using Chrome, I suggest you take another look at Safari, especially the latest
version (version 6 I believe).

Re: Technically speaking, How Does Screen Curtain Actually Work?

2012-08-15 Thread Christopher-Mark gilland
Is there a way to literally turn the display off? I don't mean set
brightness to 0 or turn on the curtain. I literally mean turn off the
display completely.

This is a mid 2010 stocked 13 inch white macbook.

I should say that turning down the brightness on the Mac does make its
battery last longer, but that turning it off is the best and that screen
curtain seems to have no or minimal impact on battery life.

Ok, one of my notorious "just wondering" questions.

I've heard many discussions about whether screen curtain saves battery
life in laptops and the smaller devices. I'm wondering if screen curtain
works by modifying information that's already been passed to the
display, or whether it bypasses the display altogether. If it's used on
an Ipod, for example, does it still use a lot of resources? Does anyone
know how it works, technically speaking?

2012-08-15 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

First thing, open Safari and press command comma to open preferences. in the
toolbar, select the advanced tab, and check Show Develop menu in menu bar.
Now, to empty the cash, press command option E.

To clear cookies. Go back into Safari preferences and choose security from the
toolbar. You will find the option in there.

You will also want to take a look in the Safari menu and select reset Safari.
There is a bunch of options in here too.

Stacey: it is a feature that tries to find an article on a webpage and only

no large chunks of text. However, if you go to a news site and open an article,

This is the one thing that has been bugging me with Chrome... Otherwise it's

On the other hand, I love Chrome on iOS. I was so surprised to see how

 Hi all,
Ever since getting the mac, I was told Chrome would serve me better; it

have decided to make Safari my default browser, and here's why.

 * Reader: the reader feature is amazing. I opened an article from twitter
and was faced with a bunch of social network links and other junk I didn't
want to read before I could find the article text. I remembered Reader,
and thought I'd try it. I pressed cmd-shift-r and... wow! The article's
title was a level one heading, and right below that was the article text.
This will save a lot of time in the future.

*Text Selection: I don't need it much, but now that we can select text in
Safari and not in other web browsers, I like knowing I have the option; in
Chrome, this would be impossible, or nearly so

 * Speed: I don't find Safari any slower than Chrome, and neither browser
 gives me busy messages.

 * Downloads: I haven't tried it, but I hear there's a keystroke to show
download progress. I like this, as I had nothing but problems downloading
more than one file in Chrome, even if the files were downloaded separately
 and not simultaneously.

 * The address bar: in Chrome, cmd-l brings me to a field in which I can
type a url or a search term. That would be fine if it didn't also load a
page on whose content vo focuses, thereby causing me to have to find the
address bar all over again. In Safari, nothing of the kind happens; cmd-l
jumps me to a (properly labeled and hinted) edit field and leaves me there.

That's all I have for now. If anyone has questions, let me know. If anyone
is using Chrome, I suggest you take another look at Safari, especially the
latest version (version 6 I believe).

RE: Two questions about virtual machines and a brief intro

2012-08-15 Thread Paul Hunt
Hello Alex. I'm using Windows 7 in VM Fusion. Yes, In many instances it can
take a minute or two to recognize pages. On the other hand, my wife has
Windows XP running in Bootcamp and pages are recognized in a matter of
seconds. There are a couple of other things you should know. Focus Braille
Drivers do not load in the Virtual Machine and Freedom Scientific is not
willing to help resolve the issue because they don't support running JAWS or
any of their applications in Virtual machines. Finally, any time you change
the configuration of your Virtual Machine you lose an activation. Freedom
Scientific is not willing to issue additional keys very often. On the plus
side, You can install Windows without sighted assistance. You can also add
printers and read and write documents stored on the Mac side. In addition,
because your virtual machine is just an image, it's easy to restore it from
a backup. So you can see that thare are tradeoffs. After considering all of
them, I'm willing to switch over to Bootcamp for the increased performance.
I'll use Drop Box whenever I need to move folders from the Mac side to the
Windows side.

Hi Alex and others,
I know of the Chrome problem which you describe regarding the address bar. Only
for me, it happens in Safari instead of chrome. At any rate, what build of
chrome are you guys running? I make it a point to always run the latest dev
build. I have chrome set to update automatically. Also, I haven't used reader
on my Mac, but I have used it on ios. I find it to be extremely useful.

Re: Two questions about virtual machines and a brief intro

2012-08-15 Thread Alex Hall
One word: NVDA. Go to http://www.nvda-project.org to find out more and download
this program, but it's basically a free screen reader that is updated
regularly, has no licensing or driver problems, and... well, it's free! After
all, do you really need to pay hundreds for a screen reader on an OS you use
seldom enough that you can run it virtually? Maybe you do, I'm not trying to
start anything, but it seems like a valid question. If you can get by with a
free screen reader for the times you do need Windows, you could save a lot of
money, time, and aggravation by not dealing with jfw, which is not even
supported on virtual machines. To be fair I have not yet tried nvda on a vm,
but I have not heard of anyone having problems with it on the development or
support email lists. Now, off to research virtualbox so I can have a leg to
stand on regarding nvda on a vm...

reading PDFs?

2012-08-15 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I have now tried two pdf files with the mac's default pdf reader, and it was
painful. Vo couldn't properly interact with the text (I had no arrow key
reading), and vo-a reads as though words are cut at random places or skipped
entirely. I was hoping textedit could help, but no luck. What app do people
prefer for easily and fully reading pdfs on the mac? I'd rather a free solution
if at all possible. Thanks.

As I said, it is not. However, AI hear it has extensive command line options,
so controlling it through terminal should be possible. I am investigating now
and will report back once I know more.

2012-08-15 Thread Damashe Thomas
I am very familiar with NVDA. I have used it as well as Serotek's SATOGO also.
But since I expect my windows use to be very light, I will be chosing a much
cheaper or even free option once my license for jaws runs out.
Let me know about how virtualbox works out.

One word: NVDA. Go to http://www.nvda-project.org to find out more and
download this program, but it's basically a free screen reader that is updated
regularly, has no licensing or driver problems, and... well, it's free! After
all, do you really need to pay hundreds for a screen reader on an OS you use
seldom enough that you can run it virtually? Maybe you do, I'm not trying to
start anything, but it seems like a valid question. If you can get by with a
free screen reader for the times you do need Windows, you could save a lot of
money, time, and aggravation by not dealing with jfw, which is not even
supported on virtual machines. To be fair I have not yet tried nvda on a vm,
but I have not heard of anyone having problems with it on the development or
support email lists. Now, off to research virtualbox so I can have a leg to
stand on regarding nvda on a vm...

Hello Alex. I’m using Windows 7 in VM Fusion. Yes, In many instances it
can take a minute or two to recognize pages. On the other hand, my wife has
Windows XP running in Bootcamp and pages are recognized in a matter of seconds.
There are a couple of other things you should know. Focus Braille Drivers do
not load in the Virtual Machine and Freedom Scientific is not willing to help
resolve the issue because they don’t support running JAWS or any of their
applications in Virtual machines. Finally, any time you change the
configuration of your Virtual Machine you lose an activation. Freedom
Scientific is not willing to issue additional keys very often. On the plus
side, You can install Windows without sighted assistance. You can also add
printers and read and write documents stored on the Mac side. In addition,
because your virtual machine is just an image, it’s easy to restore it from a
backup. So you can see that thare are tradeoffs. After considering all of them,
I’m willing to switch over to Bootcamp for the increased performance. I’ll use
Drop Box whenever I need to move folders from the Mac side to the Windows side.

Re: Customising favourites bar in Mountain Lion

2012-08-15 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi Iona,

I understand from Tim's post that the click happens only on magic trackpad. In
my case, I have accomplished the task on a macbook air with touch pad. I had to
turn the trackpad commander off with vo+left turn of the rotor and then I would
position the mouse with vo+command+f5 on the box I want to remove, confirm my
mouse position with vo+f5, and then would press with one finger my trackpad
somewhere at the top and while maintaining pressure would slide my finger down.
I then would hear a little puff sound as if you were blowing a speck of dust
away, and that would confirm to me that the item was removed.

Hope this helps.

Ok, one of my notorious "just wondering" questions.

I've heard many discussions about whether screen curtain saves battery
life in laptops and the smaller devices. I'm wondering if screen curtain
works by modifying information that's already been passed to the display,
or whether it bypasses the display altogether. If it's used on an Ipod,
for example, does it still use a lot of resources? Does anyone know how it
 works, technically speaking?

 Thanks,
 Teresa

managing voiceover prefferences, suggestions pls

2012-08-15 Thread William Windels
Hello,
it seems that I have to do a re-install of 10.8 on my air because of some
strange problems and also, with tame-machine, I have still some elements of
10.5 on my machine.

To prepare this I was making a backup of different things including my
voiceover-preferences.
After testing the exported preferences by importing them, I have discovered
that the adapted trackpad-commands where exported or imported badly so, I lost
them.
I have also tried to copy the com.apple.voiceover*.* files out of
Library/preferences in my home-folder and restarted voiceover but without
success.

I have reported this also to accessibility since 10.7 but after 1 year and a
major release later, it seems without success.
I am glad to hear of you of a solution to export/import the voiceover
preferences completely.

Kind regards,
William Windels
