Hi Christine, I think that you have to log out and log back in again after making your changes to Java Preferences in order for the changes to take effect. I assume you mean that you checked the check box for "Enable applet plug-in and Web Start applications" on the General tab of Java preferences. If accepting the new certificate, checking that box, and then exiting Java preferences and logging out and back in again don't fix things for you then you may have to call Apple. I'll point you to the instructions for using Mouse Keys to move to the tabs of the Java Preferemces menu from the mac-access list discussions. I understand that the entry under System Preferences in ML is now "Accessibility" and not "Unversal Access", but this should make sense: • Re: Mouse keys http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access%40mac-access.net/msg11321.html That post also gives a link to an earlier post,"Moving your cursor with Mouse Keys as an accessibility work around for Java Preferences", with more detailed instructions. Basically, there are 4 tabs under Java Preferences: "General", "Security", "Network", and "Advanced". Each tab takes about 70 horizontal mouse key presses to move across. The detailed post goes through everything in detail from scratch, but it does assume you have previously set your verbosity in VoiceOver Utility to announce what is under the mouse with 0 seconds delay so VoiceOver can tell you what is under the mouse when you move to these tabs with mouse keys. You can also move with your TrackPad without using Mouse Keys if you only have to change tabs once, but if you end up having to check multiple tabs and go back and forth between tabs in a single session, it's simply easier to use Mouse Keys because you can navigate precisely where you need to go.
This has been written up as detailed bug reports to Apple. I think you only need to log out and log in after you make your changes, but if you need to look at other entries under Java preferences you can use the instructions from the mac-access list posts to navigate. I'm not sure how you can uncheck items within tables on some of the tabs if you need to, though -- VO announces "empty table" in these cases. HTH.
