Re: Lion or snow leperd

2012-03-29 Thread Lewis Alexander
You can upgrade but please be aware that if your system is current, a downgrade
is REFUSED as the firmware is upgraded on install of 10.7 and the drive
partitioning behaviour also changed. if you run into difficulties with an
installation, use ONLY your recovery media to reset the system as retail disks
will not perform a complete wipe of the firmware directly.

I've been there and done that many times for both clients and myself.

Lion is a little easier to install and offers a few advantages, but if you
don't get on with lion and need to go back to snow leopard, it's a little
trickier than most people think as snow leopard has to downgrade firmware to
previous values.

QT applications

2012-03-29 Thread Jacob Schmude
Hi all,
So, I'm back on Mac (finally) now that Lion has fixed all of the bugs I
considered show stoppers in Snow Leopard. It's good to be back, however, I'm
having a rather strange problem that I can't account for. No applications based
on QT seem to be accessible anymore. These include TeamTalk, Rockbox Utility,
VirtualBox, and a few others. I didn't use TeamTalk back in sl, but I did use
Rockbox Utility and VirtualBox regularly. In sl, QT applications were quirky
but useable. In Lion, however, I can't use them at all. Everything renders as
unknown, and interacting with these unknowns either reveals nothing or reveals
more blank unknowns inside. The bewildering part about this is that I know a
few people who do not have this issue with these same programs, so I'm trying
to trace it. So far, I've had no luck. I've tried in both 32-bit and 64-bit
modes (I come from a Linux background so I know how 32-bit and 64-bit libraries
can have trouble interacting with one another) but that doesn't make a
difference. I'm wondering if I'm missing a library somehow, but if I am, it's
one that doesn't come with Lion as I've set up Lion in a Fusion virtual machine
and still have the same problem.
Can anyone shed some light on this? Those who have QT applications working with
VoiceOver, did you install or configure anything to make it work? If I can get
this bit working, I can ditch Windows for good.

Thanks

Do you know what vintage? The connectors down the left edge have changed

Eric,

Tell ya what I have not seen anything that says it is truly 30% more than
other hardware. However, even if that were true, I'd gladly pay 30% more for
a product that is of a higher quality than most other similar devices on the
market. In fact when you start to consider and compare the cost of a PC to a
Mac the PC is less expensive. THis is partially because vendors such as
Dell, HP, etc. get paid by vendors to install trial software etc. on the
machines sold. There are a lot of things that help to reduce the price of
PCs.
Also, consider the fact that many handset manufacturers are practically
giving phones away to move them. THe carriers subsidize the handsets and
then there are the offers of by one get one free etc. APple does not have
to make such deals and yet people will stil purchase the product. So, what
does that tell you? Apple sets the price and if you want the product you
will pay for it. If not, then you did not want that product. Hey I
traded/sold a G4 Mini for $200 and it was about seven years old. Could you
sell a seven-year old PC for about a third of its original value after seven
years? Probably not.

subsidize anything for anyone and I am including myself. There are companies
like Gizelle that takes older equipment and resells it. A lot of times you
can get a very good deal on a machine. There are also other companies that
do something similar. So, there are sources available, but I just see no
reason for APple regardless of how much money they have to get into the
business of providing machines at a reduced price for someone with a
disability. I think your number exercise is leaving out the larger community
of people with disabilities. YOu start adding in all the different types of
disabilities you will see the cost would go up substantially.

You know nothing is easy and we all have to work with what we have

available to us. I never said it would be easy or seem fair, but if you have
food to eat and a place to live I think you have the basic needs met. This
whole idea of redistributing the wealth of companies and individuals is
unreasonable and counterproductive, and that is what you are advocating.

I think the fact that APple does not charge for VoiceOver is a

considerable advantage because hey you aren't buying a $500 computer and
tacking another chunk of change on top just to get a usable screen reader. I

AirFoil and Option-Clicking

2012-03-29 Thread Austin Seraphin
I've started playing with AirFoil. It rocks. It lets you pipe an application's
audio through AirPlay. This also lets you select your audio source, giving a
way to make iTunes use a different audio output. I want to ditch iTunes for
music playing of course, and if possible would like to use the Music Player
Daemon (MPD). This would give a far more blind-friendly interface. VLC seems
too buggy.

Anyways, I wrote them to ask how to get MPD going through AirFoil. They wrote
back and said to option-click on the audio source button, then I could select
eh MPD process directly. I can't seem to get the hang of it though. Firstly
this button has a rather non-standard behavior - the standard activation
commands don't work, and you have to hit space or bring up a shortcut menu.
Doing a simulated mouse click with Vo-shift-space also works. I tried routing
the mouse cursor, turning off trackpad commander, then trying an option-click,
but to no avail. Can anyone suggest how to bring up this alternate menu?

Thanks, and if you love AirPlay then try AirFoil. It has a few little things
about it so ask if you need help.

Hello,

Thank you for your email. We appreciate the feedback and wanted to let you know
that the problem you describe was recently reported to Apple, and we are
currently investigating this issue. Unfortunately we cannot comment on when it
may be resolved.

Apple Accessibility

Hello,
Since 10.7, I wasn't able to import all my preferences and specially the
trackpad commander-settings.
As developer, it seems not possible also in the current release of 10.8
In attachment, you can find a voprefs-file of my adjustments> I have created
specific trackpad commands with the command- and shift-keys.
It should be nice if you could import this settings and see if it works?
If you have any commands with the shift and command key, it should be fine
since since this keys doesn't have any assignments by default.

This settings for the trackpad commander are made in 10.6 but, should also work
in 10.7?

Any comments or hints should be great.
kind regards,
William Windels

Leopard QuickTime 7 was still distributed on the system DVDs -- it just wasn't
loaded by default. In Lion you're going to have to separately download
QuickTime 7 if you want older AppleScripts based on it to work. You'll also
have to change those references from QuickTime to QuickTime 7. I had to do
this to update my AppleScripts that speed up podcast listening.

To download QuickTime 7 for Lion, check the Apple KnowledgeBase support page:
• Installing QuickTime Player 7 on Mac OS X v10.6 or Later

Thanks Mark,

I did all the suggested steps but nothing worked until I entered full screen.
Don't know if this was the trigger of tins clarifying but it certainly appears

Calling All Focus 40 Blue Users

2012-03-29 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Listers,

I am cross-posting this to both the V iPhone and Mac Visionaries mailing
lists.

I am delighted to inform you that I am now the proud owner of a
brand-spanking new Freedom Scientific Focus 40 Blue Braille display. I will
go pick it up from the post office sometime within the next 4 hours.

If memory serves, and many times it does not (smile), I recall reading here
that there are some nuances regarding the Focus-40 of which a new user
should be aware.

So, I would greatly appreciate any advice on how I can get my new display up
and running so I can, once again, enjoy the privilege of exploring my
iPhone, Mac, and online world via a refreshable Braille display.

Thank you all In Advance,

Mark

Re: QT applications

2012-03-29 Thread Jacob Schmude
Hi
QT, not quicktime. QT, the GUI toolkit. Rockbox, for example, has absolutely
zero to do with quicktime at all. Perhaps I should have specified that, but I
guess I thought the names of apps would have made that clear.

Re: Accessible Excel for the mac or something not as hard to use and confusing as Numbers

2012-03-29 Thread Esther
Hi Becky,

You might want to try Tables by Daniel Schwill:
http://www.x-tables.eu/

Most people find this to have a more intuitive interface than Numbers. It will
support most of the standard spreadsheet operations, but not all the features
that an Excel power user might want. You can get the 30-day free trial
download. They also have an educational discount, if you purchase from an
email address with a .edu or other such identifying extension (currently $27.80
instead of $42.42 for a single user license).

How can I check if reply was sent in lion mail layout

An other mail question from a newly with lion mail layout:
IS there a way to see the status of reply being sent or not in this view? In

App to amplify sound in local vicinity

2012-03-29 Thread chris hallsworth

Hello all.
I have heard of apps that can amplify the sound around you. Please can I
ask, what do you all use? Asking as I may need this as a backup due to
hearing aid problems. Yes, I am hearing impaired. This is on an iPhone 4
running iOS 5.1.

Thanks!

Re: AppleWorks Conversion to something more modern?

2012-03-29 Thread Esther
Hi Mike,

Teresa is correct; you can open the later version, individual cwk files in
iWorks -- most likely in Pages from your description. However, probably an
easier way to deal with these files is to batch convert them from AppleWorks
format to Pages format using an AppleScript.

You can download an AppleScript named "batch_AWxWP2Pages.zip" that will perform
this conversion from the MobileMe iDisk of Yvan Koenig at:

Download: For_iWork:For_Pages:batch_AWxWP2Pages.zip

To navigate to the download link for this AppleScript, use the URL for Yvan
Koenig's public iDisk:
http://public.me.com/koenigyvan

Then use item chooser menu (VO-I) to navigate to each successive sub-directory
that is separated by the colons. For example, first use item chooser menu to
navigate to "For_iWork", which will be announced as "clickable". Press either
"Return" or use VO-Space to select this item as the location you want to
navigate to, then use VO-Space to "click" the item. Perform the same steps with
item chooser menu to navigate to "For_Pages" within the "For_iWork" directory,
and again click on this with VO-Space. After you use item chooser menu a third
time to navigate to "batch_AWxWP2Pages.zip" and VO-Space to click on the file
selection, use item chooser a final time to find the "Download" clickable
element that will actually initiate the download of this AppleScript when you
click with VO-Space.

By the way, this directory is the same location where I found an AppleScript to
batch convert Pages output to Word document format in response to Yuma's
question last year. If you think this is something you might use, you can also
use item chooser menu to find the "batch_exportPages2DOC.zip" AppleScript,
VO-Space, then find the "Download" clickable element again and VO-Space to
download that AppleScript, as well, before you leave the site.

You'll find the file(s) in your Downloads folder. From Safari, press
Command-Option-L to move to your Downloads window. This shortcut works for me,
as long as my Safari tool bar is not hidden, but if you can't view your
downloaded files when you press Command-Option-L, toggle Safari into full
screen mode with Command-Control-F before trying Command-Option-L again.
(Thanks to Søren and others who confirmed this works on their 15 inch MacBook
Pro models; it's not clear why some models require this and others do not, but
putting Safari into full screen mode should enable all Macs to view downloads
window content with Command-Option-L. You can toggle out of full screen mode
with another Command-Control-F.)

The source code is documented in French and English. If your files are cwk 6.0
or later, then it should just convert them to Pages format. However, if they
are earlier than version 6.0 cwk files, you'll need a copy of AppleWorks 6 on
your machine so that the AppleScript can first convert them to AppleWorks 6.0
format, and then convert them to Pages format. This probably means that you
have to be running Snow Leopard or earlier, so you can run the earlier programs
that were designed for the PowerPC Macs in Rosetta mode, as well as having a
copy of the AppleWorks 6 program. If this is the case, you should probably run
the downloaded AppleScript for "batch_AWxWP2Pages" from an older Mac. The
older PowerPC models that were loaded with Tiger came with AppleWorks and other
OS 7 software, as well.

The way that Yvan Koenig's script works, if you select a folder which contains
the files you want to batch convert, and then run the AppleScript that you
downloaded and opened, by pressing Command-R, converted versions of the files
will be created in the same folder. This was the way the AppleScript to batch
convert Pages files to Word document format worked. You can save the
AppleScript in any location, but if you want to be able to access it from your
menu bar, save it to the Library/Scripts folder for your account. While in the
AppleScript editor that you opened when accessing the script file, press
Command-Comma to bring up your preferences window, then check the box for "Show
script menu in menu bar" before closing the window with Command-W. This will
make an "AppleScript" menu visible on your status menu bar. You can navigate
to it with either VO-M-M or Control-F8, and if you arrow down into it, you'll
find any AppleScripts that you've placed into your Library/Scripts folder,
along with the various folders of your computer's AppleScripts (if the box for
"Show Computer Scripts" was also checked under your AppleScript preferences
window).

Under Lion, your Library folder is hidden. You can still view it if you use
the Command-Shift-G shortcut for "Go to folder" and type into the dialog text
box:
~/Library
(that's a tilde, followed by a slash, followed by the word "Library" with no
spaces between any of the characters). Then press "return' to actually go
there. The tilde is a shorthand wa

Re: baffled in lion 3 column mail layout help please!

2012-03-29 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hi Ioana.

If you want to reply to a message, press enter on it and do command R or
Command shift R reply to all.

If you want to see the headers of the message? Press command shift H and if
you do that twice you either get the short header or the long header as VO will

Re: How can I check if reply was sent in lion mail layout

2012-03-29 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hi Ioana again.

Normally the new reply gets attached to the end of the conversation if you are
viewing the conversation left to right with VO. Or the new message will appear
first if you have deleted the other messages from the conversations. I hope
this is not too confusing for you and others.

Re: Calling All Focus 40 Blue Users

2012-03-29 Thread Teresa Cochran
The only problem I've had on the Mac specifically is that my display goes to
sleep for about ten minutes when I first plug it in via USB and does the same
when I restart VO in USB mode. I stumped three levels of Apple help folks with
this one, including someone purported to be an engineer, so I'm guessing
there's a good possibility of it being a bug. I'd suggest using the Bluetooth
and plugging the AC cord in.

Have fun. This display is really a joy to use. I use it with IBooks and text
files all the time.

If you are replying to someone on the list then that is where your message will
go. In order to reply directly to someone you will need to put their address in
the "To:" field.

Re: Replying to only one person on list with a Mac

2012-03-29 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, Jenny,

Which layout for your mail are you using? The short answer to this is that you
will need to get to your message headers and interact with them. Find the email
address from which the email originates and copy it. I most often use
VO-shift-c to copy the last spoken phrase to the clipboard.

Re: Replying to only one person on list with a Mac

2012-03-29 Thread Teresa Cochran
Here's something that makes things a little easier. In Lion, I went into the
headers and found the email address. Then I brought up the contextual menu with
VO-shift-m. In that menu is an item: "Reply to sender". This is a bit shorter
than copying and pasting.

2012-03-29 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Quite correct. In Lion, you need to interact with the message header group
then focus on the e-mail of the sender, then, for some reason, VO+left just
once. Now, the reply to sender apears in the context menu.

I remember trying virtual box in snow leppard, it didn't work at all, the qt

developers should use the native controls for their applicatioons and not take

Subject: Calling All Focus 40 Blue Users

Hello Listers,

I am cross-posting this to both the V iPhone and Mac Visionaries mailing
lists.

I am delighted to inform you that I am now the proud owner of a
brand-spanking new Freedom Scientific Focus 40 Blue Braille display. I
will

go pick it up from the post office sometime within the next 4 hours.

If memory serves, and many times it does not (smile), I recall reading
here

that there are some nuances regarding the Focus-40 of which a new user
should be aware.

So, I would greatly appreciate any advice on how I can get my new display
up

and running so I can, once again, enjoy the privilege of exploring my
iPhone, Mac, and online world via a refreshable Braille display.

Thank you all In Advance,

Mark

Hello all.
I have heard of apps that can amplify the sound around you. Please can I
ask, what do you all use? Asking as I may need this as a backup due to
hearing aid problems. Yes, I am hearing impaired. This is on an iPhone 4
running iOS 5.1.

Thanks!

Re: Replying to only one person on list with a Mac

2012-03-29 Thread Chris Blouch
Since OSX is Unix underneath, there is always MacPorts which has a nice
little installer system to bring all those unix tools you might be
familiar with to a terminal app near you.

http://www.macports.org/

They currently maintain a library of 13758 ports and both Alpine and
Pine is in there under mail. So if you really wanted to, you could use
them on your Mac.

Re: QT applications

2012-03-29 Thread Chris Blouch

Ahh, so you meant this one:

http://qt-project.org/

Rockbox sure sounded like something AV that might make use of QuickTime.

At least with VirtualBox pretty much everything could be done via the
command line so the inaccessible UI was less of a show stopper. Most
folks have ponied up the cash for a copy of VMWare Fusion since that has
a nice accessible UI. Of course then you have to get Jaws or NVDA
running under windows in the virtual environment.

loaded by default.

Hi all,
So, I'm back on Mac (finally) now that Lion has fixed all of the bugs I

having a rather strange problem that I can't account for.

Thanks

The only problem I've had on the Mac specifically is that my display goes to
sleep for about ten minutes when I first plug it in via USB and does the
same when I restart VO in USB mode. I stumped three levels of Apple help
folks with this one, including someone purported to be an engineer, so I'm
guessing there's a good possibility of it being a bug. I'd suggest using the
Bluetooth and plugging the AC cord in.

Have fun. This display is really a joy to use. I use it with IBooks and text
files all the time.

Re: Replying to only one person on list with a Mac

2012-03-29 Thread Eric Oyen
what I would like to do is replace the java that OS X installs with the command
line version in macports (its newer and can do more).

I am just not sure how.

 Hi, Jenny,

Which layout for your mail are you using? The short answer to this is that
you will need to get to your message headers and interact with them. Find
the email address from which the email originates and copy it. I most
often use VO-shift-c to copy the last spoken phrase to the clipboard.

Re: Calling All Focus 40 Blue Users

2012-03-29 Thread Teresa Cochran
Can you please post it here? I am going to take a gander that this is
definitely on topic, since it relates to using Braille with Lion. It hadn't
occurred to me to do this. (slapping my forehead several times) LOL

Thanks,
Teresa

Re: importing vo-preffereces in osx-lion

2012-03-29 Thread Jürgen Fleger
The issue is quite annoying. I wished, Apple at first fixed all the issues in
VO and added then new features. Sometimes I have the feeling, they are
beginning to do the same mistakes like Freedom Scientific. Including new
features but ignoring the major bugs like settings import, tables in text
documents, word processing in general, pitching in voices, header issues in
Safari and the iTunes Store, etc. etc. etc.
