Hi Egbert,

honnestley: I have no clue what you mean by: they don't go away

Do you mean it's not possible closing them by pressing CMD + w? You may have
pressed save and the program is still saving. Just wait a little bit longer and
try again.

 Hi Jessica,

this is not a area I use a lot, as once I got it working I never touched

the settings again. But, I can offer a few general tips and hopefully
others can provide you more detailed help.

First, I remember when I first started using my Google account on the
iPhone there was no delete button. You have a archive button instead.
Use that as you would delete and don't move things to trash. Someone else

will need to chime in on how to get the delete button to show up, that is
if you want it to. some people prefer the Archive button.

In settings you can change the mail behavior for downloading messages. I
have mine set up to only download when I open Mail. this will give you
the behavior you want. Again a better expert can walk you through the
settings but if you look under settings then mail, you should find it.

Hope this info helps a little.

Question on adding columns in Numbers

2012-03-03 Thread Scott Howell
Hi all,

FOr those of you who are familiar with Numbers I have a question. I am trying
to create a spreadsheet that would let me create three or four columns with
text headers such as paint, flooring etc.
Then I want to have the ability to put a dollar amount in each column and have
the individual columns added up at the bottom or top-where ever.
The goal is to have individual columns that contain a specific item and if I
buy a gallon of blue paint, green paint, and purple paint, I want to put each
cost of the paint in the paint column and have a total of what I spent for the
paint.
I did not see a sample I could use in the available templates. So, any help is
appreciated.

Thanks,

Re: Question on adding columns in Numbers

2012-03-03 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Scott.
No prob. First, when I do this, I make to assign how many header rows and
column rows I want. I think the default is one of each. First, when you call up
Numbers you get be template list when you choose a new file with command n.
Then I press enter on that if it says blank. Interact on the layout option and
the table option. Then press VO you for the menu and go table. Go down until
you find the option for header rows submenu; I think there's one for columns
too, but i can't remember. Press right arrow on the submenu and get The list.
You probably want 1, so you won't need to do this part of the procedure unless
you want more.

VoiceOver uses these headers to announce things. So, put your titles across the
row the way you want them in row 1, and perhaps a title in column 1, maybe. Go
down your columns and put in your numbers. I put in a divider line by typing
apostrophe symbol followed by 6 equal signs so VO will say them.

Then call up the menu with VO M and right arrow to INSERT. Go down arrow until
you find Function. The first item under it is sum. It should then automatically
put in your total of that column. types in the formula for you, I love it.

The only thing is that sometimes VoiceOver won't say A, b, c, etc. If you want
to add up things in the row, you can use Excel formulas by typing in the equals
sign followed by the letter and row you want to add, then the plus sign, and
the next one, etc. There may be an easier way to do this part, but I haven't
found it yet. I use Numbers all the time to do what y're doing. The only thing
I have trouble getting done is a command on the keyboard to go to the end of
the file. So, I use the track pad if I want to go very far in a large file.

Regards,
Gigi

pdftotext utility [was Re: Xpdf for mac]

2012-03-03 Thread Esther
Hi Dan,

You can grab the Mac OS X installer package for pdftotext from Carsten Blüm's
web page:
http://www.bluem.net/en/mac/packages/

Just download the latest version, which is pdftotext 3.01pl5 (13/07/2011, 686
KB, for Intel Macs). Double-clicking the Installer.pkg on the pdftotext.dmg
installs the pdftotext utility but not the suite of other xpdf utilities. If
you need to install the full version of xpdf, I'd check the macports web pages
about Lion problems, and also read the instructions for Xcode 4.3 migration of
macports before proceeding.

Using the command;
pdftotext
in Terminal creates a .txt version of the file in the same directory as the pdf
file. This does not convert pdf files that are purely graphics images.

If you want to run this from the Terminal command line, I'd recommend that you
get the free Go2Shell utility from the Mac App Store:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/go2shell/id445770608?mt=12
This is a low-footprint app that opens up a Terminal window in the directory of
the file you've highlighted in Finder, and saves you having to type long
pathnames either for the file you want to convert (although you can do a
Command-C copy in Finder and then a Command-V paste in Terminal), or cd to a
change directory to that pathname before applying your command.

Alternatively, you can put an AppleScript wrapper around the pdftotext command
and use this from the GUI. Just open your AppleScript Editor (use
Command+Shift+U in Finder to go to your Utilities folder, press "a p" to go to
the AppleScript Editor and use Command+Down Arrow or Command+O to launch it)
and paste in the following code (staring below the line labeled "Cut Here", and
ending with the line "end run"):
---Cut Here---
(*
Use pdftotext to create a text version of the selected PDF file
  Created 17 May 2011
*)
on run
   tell application "Finder"
set chosenFile to the selection as alias
   end tell
do shell script "/usr/local/bin/pdftotext " & quoted form of POSIX path
of chosenFile
end run

Since Lion now hides the Library file for your account, and you'd usually store
this AppleScript in a Library/Scripts folder, I'll post a neat solution for
unhiding your ~/Library folder from Doug Adams' AppleScripts for iTunes web
pages on "Installing AppleScript under Mac OS X Lion". Simply go to the
"download this AppleScript applet" link on the "Make Users Library Folder
VIsible" page at:
http://dougscripts.com/itunes/2011/07/installing-applescripts-under-os-x-lion/
Opening the downloaded applet will make the Library folder on your account
visible without having to type a command on the Terminal command line or
download and run an application like TinkerTool to reconfigure your account
preference settings.

Either compile the AppleScript with Command-K, or else select a pdf file in
Finder and switch back to the AppleScript Editor with Command-Tab, then run the
AppleScript with Command-R (which also compiles it) to test this. You can save
the file to the Library/Scripts folder on your home directory, with a name of
your choice (e.g., "PDF to Text"). (You may need to create this folder if this
is the first time you are using AppleScripts.) If you also bring up the
preferences menu before quitting the AppleScript Editor with Command-comma, and
check the box for "Show Script menu on menu bar" on the general tab, "PDF to
Text" (or whatever name you saved) will show up under the "AppleScript" menu on
the status menu bar.

Another alternative to navigating to the status menu bar (VO-M-M or Control-F8)
and navigating to the "PDF to Text" entry of the AppleScript menu is to use
Automator, and set this up as a service by pasting text into the "run
AppleScript" action. This was also previously described in the forum posts in
the "Re: something like pdf2txt on the mac?" thread:
http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg45375.html

HTH. Note that both the AppleScript and Automator solutions also allow you to
process multiple PDF files that you have selected in Finder.

Cheers,

Esther

it seems to me you didn't close the sound window before closing the program,

Give it a try and tell wether you were successful.

Burning DMG files?

2012-03-03 Thread Bill Holton
Looks like to burn a DMG file to a disk you have to drag and drop the source
and destination in the disk utilities menu and then restore. Is there a
better way to do this with keystroke commands? Thanks.

Re: Burning DMG files?

2012-03-03 Thread erik burggraaf
Well, you could brush up your voiceover drag and drop skills, or you could try
http://www.simplyburns.sourceforge.net where you wil find a fully functioning
cd burner for the mac.
Open simply burns.
tab to the burn image button and press space.
tab to the choose file button and press space.
Choose the fusion dmg.
Throw in a CD, and hit the burn button.
Incidentally simply burns will show you all partitions on the image. My guess
is that you'll see an hfs partition and a cdfs or UTF8 or some such. But there
will be two partitions, one for mac and the other for windows, and you wil be
able to identify them before burning.

Hope this helps,

Mac file sharing with windows machines problem

2012-03-03 Thread Claus Thøgersen

Hi,

I have a Mac Mini running 10.6.7. I want to use it as a media server to
stream my music from.

This means I have to be able to access files from my Windows pcs.

I have followed the guides on how to setup Windows file sharing,
enabling smb, and give the correct workgroup Name, setting up folders to
share and the permissions for both my regular mac user account and guest
account, all users have both read and write access to the shared folders.

I can access both my Windows computers from the mac. I can ping the mac
from the Windows machines, but I cannot access the Mac, it does not show
up in the network list on the Windows machines. I get the usual Windows
network error both when I try to connect to the Minis IP address, or
using the machine Name.

In my setup I need to be able to access the Mac from the windows
machines, the application that controls the streaming is a Windows
application.

I have gone over setup for file sharing, the only problem is that it
does not work. On the net there is not a lot of guides on how to
troubleshoot this problem.

Regards

Claus

Anyone Ever Use Homespun Music for Instruction?

2012-03-03 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, all,

It seems to me that the Instant Access app for the Mac is not accessible. Does
anyone know if there's another way to download the files? I saw something in
the app about using an alternate player, but that's probably just for playing
the music lessons.

Meanwhile, I'm purchasing an old-fashioned CD from them, because I really
believe in what they do, and I want to learn Hawaiian slack-key guitar. :)

I can be in the middle of doing anything on my Mac Mini, and suddenly, a file

the date). . Anyone have ideas?

Also , have you tried making a network location named after your windows work

Hi Teresa,

Don't know about the player in question, but I thought I'd mention blindvi.com.
Bill brown runs it & creates tutorials for guitar, piano, banjo, drums & etc
for the blind. It's a great sight & NLS carries quite a few of his titles.
Might want to check it out.

Best wishes,

Hdeterming DAISY version of a book

2012-03-03 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Guys,
I have a problem. I have a daisy book that was done by the Minnesota
State services for the blind. However, I don't really know how to find
out what version of Daisy the book is done in. Can anyone tell me if
there's a method for finding this out? I want to buy an app for my
iPhone but need to make sure that the app supports the DAISY of this
specific book.

I did download JAWS 12 and discovered that this particular book would
work with that FS reader. However, I need to make sure that it will
work with either in daisy or read to go.  The only thing I know for
certain is that the book is audio only.  The book was delivered on a
cd ROM with a bunch of MP3 files all of which have long numbers
instead of descriptive filenames. There are also .sml files and one
HTML file.    Again, is there any way to look at these files on the
disk to determine the flavor of Daisy employed?

Apparently a blank DVD disk causes this, too, because for the past hour the

Re: Burning DMG files?

2012-03-03 Thread John Panarese
This is my personal experience only, so I preface this by saying that I
have no proof that it makes a difference, but I was having a lot of issues with
blank CDs and DVDs, as well as when opening an optical disk causing repeated
busy signals. I ended up deleting my Finder preference files from my user
library and rebooted the system. I haven't had any issues since.

Note that if you delete finder preferences, you will have to reconfigure
Finder in any customizable way you might have initially set. For example,
you'll have to check all of the boxes for what will appear on the desktop, such
as hard disks, connected servers, etc.

Thank you Gigi and Anne for the info.
Gigi I will follow your instructions. I had done something similar, but the

Re: Remove programs from Desktop

2012-03-03 Thread Emrah
Hey Mike,

If you want to move a program to the applications folder and are using Lion, do
the following.

1. Position your cursor on the app you want to move.
2. Press Command+C
3. Open up your Applications folder by pressing Command+Shift+A.
4. Press Command+Option+V.

If that is not convenient, you can always create a folder and move everything
you do not want in it.

Hope this helps,
Emrah

redirecting voice over?

2012-03-03 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Say, can someone out there tell me whether or not it is possible to cause VO to
be redirected to another output other than the default? I'm not talking here
about chaging the default output to Sound Flower or anything; rather, I'd like
to be able to redirect VO itself to occur in another output other than the
default. Is this possible? I've look in Utilities/Audio Midi set up and can't
seem to find it there. Thanks.

If your using Lion, yes. If not, no. Look in VO utilities under sound. There
is a pop up menu to choose what sound card VO uses.

Re: Burning DMG files?

2012-03-03 Thread erik burggraaf
Yeh, you know, when I looked for burn, I couldn't find the tool bar on my
finder. It's not something I use all that often so may have unchecked it or
something. There's burn to disk in the file menu or the context menu, but
without actually burning a disk, I couldn't be sure they wouldn't just burn a
copy of the disk image, which wouldn't be what the doctor ordered.

Where-as simply burns is tried and true. It gives you full information before
it burns the image. It has all kinds of other burning features such as the
ability to make audio cd's from flac files, or create images from your cd's or
dvd's. As much as I know finder and disk utility do all these wonderful
things, I prefer to trust an actual cd burning program to handle it. I can see
exactly what's going on and know exactly what it's doing.

Re: Burning DMG files?

2012-03-03 Thread John Panarese
I think you need to be in disk utility. The toolbar, I believe, is hidden,
so you might have to reveal it. Then, there is a burn button in the toolbar.
As long as you have the disk image selected from the drive list and a blank
disk in the optical drive, you should be good to go.

This is my personal experience only, so I preface this by saying that I
have no proof that it makes a difference, but I was having a lot of issues
with blank CDs and DVDs, as well as when opening an optical disk causing
repeated busy signals. I ended up deleting my Finder preference files from
my user library and rebooted the system. I haven't had any issues since.

Note that if you delete finder preferences, you will have to
reconfigure Finder in any customizable way you might have initially set.
For example, you'll have to check all of the boxes for what will appear on
the desktop, such as hard disks, connected servers, etc.

Update on weird braille problem

2012-03-03 Thread Gigi
>
> Hi guys
Some of you may remember, that I had a problem with my braille display. It was
doing weird things like doing reversals on contractions and reversals even on
letters typed in missing docs etc. Well, I discovered something I didn't know
today, and it may affect anybody who happens to be having any weird problems
with their braille display. I think I remember somebody on this list saying
they were having some, so here's what I found out.
Because I was having such an irritating recurring problem, I decided to take my
braille display off of voiceovers list, and didn't reestablish it. Well, that
made things better, but I still had a problem. So, after writing Apple, I
decided to go for a Genius Bar appointment. I was going for other reasons, and
I had to wait. So, not thinking that was going to find out anything, I call
that the voiceover utility. Gas what! I found out that although voiceover had
my braille display listed as a cat focus 40 using USB, it also said that my key
input was no input from primary braille display. I didn't think that could
happen with a focus 40 since it has keys, and I thought voiceover decided it
was going to use Kinyon puts or not. Well I change this option that didn't
solve the problem until I restarted my computer it looks like that my computer
in my braille display are getting back together again. So, if any of you are
having any weird things going on with your braille display, especially if you
have one with braille key for input, you may want to go under displays in the
voiceover utilities under the braille option and find out what you're saying is
there.
Regards,
Gigi

Re: time machine

2012-03-03 Thread Gigi
Hi guys
When I do Time Machine backups, and I hope I have interpreted the question
correctly, I noticed that there is a long number after the update of the folder
and I figured out, that this is the time and date. However, it is written like
in military time. For instance, 4 o'clock in the afternoon will be 1600, and
then the year after it today in the year after it.

RE: Burning DMG files?

2012-03-03 Thread Bill Holton
This did something, but not enough. I deleted the file, and now when I go
to disk utilities and select the VMware dmg file and then go to tools and
pick burn instead of disk busy messages I get a waiting for disk to be
inserted message, this despite the fact there is a writable disk in the
Superdrive and I can feel and hear it spinning. Also, tried with three
different disks that all work fine because when I put them in my win box the
menu comes up saying what would you llike to write to this disk?
Any other thoughts and suggestions greatly appreciated.

question of Outlook tell recognizer

2012-03-03 Thread Gigi
> Hi guys
I thought of something that I would like to see if the Look tell Recognizer can
do it. If I were to get someone to take a picture of a Dallas area rapid
transit bus stop sign, could it learn to recognize them I am getting sick of
looking for those things. Today I was standing right next to one, and didn't
know it at first. I only found out when this lady looked at the bus schedule.

Wow! Major successRE: Burning DMG files?

2012-03-03 Thread Bill Holton
Hi.
Apparently the order was critical. This time I removed the Superdrive,
deleted the library file, shut down the mini, restarted, then attached the
Superdrive. Not only did it work flawlessly, it seems to have solved a
problem I have been going back and forth with Apple about since
November--whenever I had an empty drie and would try to access it via Finder
I would get busy, busy, forever. Attached a USB HD, erased it, then
accessed it fine via Finder.
So done for tonight, tomorrow I try to install the tools in my VM Window.
Thanks for all the great help here from everyone!

Are you having problems with disk in general? Also, have you tried
other blank disks? This seems more than a little odd.

Looks like I spoke too soon on the busy problem. I was able to access the
drive about four times, and then I started getting busy busy again. But it
must be something that's going into that preference file. There is a second
com.finder file that is a unix executable. Any idea what that one does and
if I should try deleting it, too?

RE: Wow! Major successRE: Burning DMG files?

2012-03-03 Thread Bill Holton
I have narrowed my problems to a very unique set of keystrokes. When I
delete the preference file everything works fine. I can attach a USB drive,
erase it, then use command-O to access the drive, leave it, access it again
and again.
But if from the desktop I press command-3 to set finder to read in columns
mode and then try to access the drive I get busy, busy, busy, and it will
stay that way until I re-delete the library file.
I have done this three times so far, always the same results.
Very strange, but at least now I can maybe get them to duplicate it.

I deleted both myself. I just wanted to be sure. I don't like to mess
with preference files unless I have a pretty good idea of what I am doing.
Of course, backup, backup, backup.

vo avow to the right past the search box and there's a button you can click on.

I just tried option command without a download running, and it didn't come up,
so try the download button in the toolbar if nothing is active. My homepage
though is a blank homepage when I open Safari. Most people probably don't
prefer that but I do.

My iMac won't sleep

2012-03-03 Thread Paul Henrichsen
Hi. For some reason, my iMac will no longer go to sleep if left on. It wil if I
select sleep, but not on its own.
In system preferrences, under users and log in, I only have growl, an apple
helper from iTunes, I think, and dropbox. I have my power saver settings at
default.
Any ideas what happened to make the mac no longer sleep?
Thanks.

Do you mean it's not possible closing them by pressing CMD + w? You may
