Anyone else hate the way Ebay works with Zoom?

2012-03-02 Thread Louie P. (Pete) Nalda
When you see an ebay page, and you scroll up to look at the picture, you can't
just zoom in on that and move around. Instead you're presented with a little
virtual magnifying glass, that shows the image off to the side. That doesn't
do us much good, unless we zoom out with Zoom in the mac. I find this very
annoying, and was wondering if ya'll though it would do any good to contact
ebay about this? The old way was so much nicer where you could just see
different angles in a normal picture. What do you all think?

Re: 2 mail ishues

2012-03-02 Thread Garth Humphreys
Hi
Just to add to Teresa's message. If you have a laptop rather than the extended
keyboard you can perform the home by pressing FN+left arrow, so the whole
command is VO+shift+FN with either the left or right arrow to jump to the top
or bottom of the list.

You can also move a message by bringing up the context menu when focused on the
message. You can bring up the context menu by pressing VO+Shift+M. The move
option is fairly low in the list of commands. One nice thing is that below the
move and copy options in the context is an option to move to the last folder
you've moved to again.

Sorry I should have thought of a better way to say that :) but take a look and
it will make sense.

Cheers Garth

I'd like to take issue on this to say that as long as one can make themselves
understood, then the person is on the right track. You are very wrong to say
people do not review their messages before sending as I know that people do
that, I being for one.

Thank you.

Re: A little spellcheck before pressing send please?

2012-03-02 Thread Scott Howell
Not to beat the topic to death, but knowing I'm not an English major and not
great at spelling, I make every effort to send messages that sound as though I
took the time to prepare them. Of course some of this comes from my
professional world where we are expected to prepare messages that reflect
thorough research etc. Even though we may begin to speak our messages etc. we
should still take time to review them for accuracy and to ensure the message is
clear. Oddly enough I have seen an increase in professional websites with
spelling and grammatical errors and I'm not sure why this is. I for one really
like the fact that I am alerted to the spelling errors I make or those errors
where I have swapped letters.

Re: A little spellcheck before pressing send please?

2012-03-02 Thread Scott Howell
Kawal,

I'm not looking to start a pissing contest here, but can you definitively state
that you know every person reviews his/her messages prior to sending it? I
really doubt that. You obviously take time to review your messages and I will
not argue that point with you because I am not sitting with you when you send
the message. I think the point is people should keep in mind that the messages
they send are a reflection of themselves. So, if you want people to think of
you as intelligent etc. you try to send intelligent sounding messages. Now of
course we all have off days and messages get a bit garbled at times. :)

Re: A little spellcheck before pressing send please?

2012-03-02 Thread Mr. L. Alexander
I agree this is being argued to death. OK I admit to some errors in posts, etc
either through rushing through work, etc or having "Blonde days" and we're ALL
guilty of it. It does however concern me that when reading a message with
voiceover, a message with countless errors causes voiceover as you all know to
miss pronounce a word or words thereby making them misunderstood. Some users
may be communicating through a desktop or notebook and others through touch
screen interfaces like the iphone and ipad, therefore it's rather easy to make
errors through touch screen inaccuracies.

Please do take all these points into consideration but at the same time,
consider what the target audience is listening to or reading so that it can be
understood. The english language is often taken for granted, bearing in mind
that there are many users on this forum who are not english speakers as a first
language. So from that position, let's treat each other with respect and an
intellectual stand point.

on a more amusing note, think of it this way, new words are invented every day,
some which voiceover can pronounce, others it can't. like the welsh language.
Voiceover can't even understand it let alone pronounce correctly as voiceover
does not include a welsh dictionary component nor language set. I myself am not
welsh but have come across pages where voiceover becomes garbled.

in summary, let us all try at least to make our subjects and replies legible to
the average reader as well as screen readers.

with many thanks,

the constantly puzzled lew.

2012-03-02 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
I guess the important thing is we remember why we are on these lists to get a
little help from each other and whilst today (I do not know about the US),
politicians go on and on about how bad it is that people cannot write properly,
People such as ourselves who rely on verbal communication are hopefully going
to make extra effort to get their messages across in an intelligent and
professional manner as for us we have to do more demonstrating to the world if
we are going to succeed in our lives. I just don't think we should judge each
other by our spelling as long as we get the help and advice we need to use our
tools and gadgets. I hope I make sense as I always appreciate the help and the
friends I may have made from the lists I belong to.

selecting noncontiguously in a folder

2012-03-02 Thread Angie Giltinan
good morning all, I may have asked this in the past, if so, forgive me?
Anyway, how does one select noncontiguous items in a folder,
 my example is this.
I want to copy several items in a folder, but not all items, and the ones I
want are not adjacent to each other.
Thanks for any help!
I really value all the people on this list, I learn so much!
Thanks again,
Kind Regards

RE: Apple TV

2012-03-02 Thread Sarah May

Hi Jason,

Welcome to the list. My name is Sarah. I'm from St. Paul, Minnesota,
U.S.A. Wow, you have only been blind for nine years? You are adapting very
well. I have been visually impaired since I was born, but had pretty good
useable vision until I lost most of it around the age of twelve/thirteen. I
still have a little remaining vision left but it isn't very functional. I
received a Macbook Pro for my birthday last year. I checked out the I-Phone
last year at my local Apple store. I have some dexterity issues with my
fingers and didn't find the phone to be real user friendly because of that.
The Apple TV sounds awesome with you being able to access the menus and all
that independently with no sighted assistance. I am unable to access the
menus on my TV, or access the On Demand features that my cable company
provides, because of how the menus are set up. Can you tell me more about
Apple TV and how it works? Is it a software that you can put on any
television/ or flat screen TV that you own? I know I've seen posts about
the APple TV on the list here, but didn't think anything of it because I
didn't have it. If you could tell me more about it I'd appreciate it.

Jason, I admire, respect, and appreciate those who serve our country. My
Dad served in the navy for four years during Vietnam. My boyfriend also
served in the navy for ten years and was discharged when he got out as an E6
Petty Officer. I always thought if I had vision that I would have followed
in my Dad's footsteps and enlisted in the navy. My brother thought of
enrolling as a JAG officer after law school but he has some health issues
that prevented him from doing so. So I was engrained in my family that it
is important to serve your country.

Well, I hope you will find the list beneficial. I have learned a lot myself
from being on the list here and everyone is very helpful and nice. Have a
great day!

Sarah

using apple products bor a few years now with the purchase of the iphone

iphone 4s, Macbook pro, apple tv, and airport extreme. I also have my PC
with Jaws 13 that i also use. I have only had the macbook since and apple tv
2nd gen since christmass. I am still learning the voiceover on the mac but
its getting easier to do things . I wanted to comment on the apple tv and
say how much I enjoy it. For the first time since loosing my sight I am able
to know what is on the tv and select what I want to watch with no sighted
help. I use it alot to play tv shows for my kids when I am alone with them
using netflicks, and tv shows that i purchased from Itunes. I also have it
hooked up to a nice stereo and take advantage of the airplay feature to play
music from my itunes and pandora threw my stereo using my Iphone. I would be
happy to answer any specific questions about it . thanks I look forward to
learning more from you all about apple and other accessable toys. jason

Re: A little spellcheck before pressing send please?

messages to people I know well. I find a fair amount of letter transposition

2012-03-02 Thread Marlaina Lieberg
Oh boy I agree 100%.  I find it shocking how sloppily some messages appear;
since most lists I'm on are blindness-related, I have no idea whether we as a
group are more careless than others in general, but sometimes I think I know
why we have such a high unemployment rate, smile! While nobody is perfect, and
I head that list of imperfect people, I do believe some of us tend to not care
about the appearance of that which we write; and, this is harmful to all of us
since all our great words of wisdom live on in the various lanes of the super
highway called the internet. Now, before I send this, let me spell check it,
LOL!

Re: Mac + Chrome + Netflix = html5?

2012-03-02 Thread Traci
Ok, great!

If I decided to give Chrome a whirl, to test out Netflix, is it an easy
experiment? Meaning, once I download and install, do I go to system
preferences to choose how I surf the web? If I don't like Chrome, is it easy
to switch back to Safari?

Lol, I'll have to look up some podcasts to learn more.

If this makes Netflix more VO Friendly, it could be cool.

Re: Mac + Chrome + Netflix = html5?

2012-03-02 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, traci,

As far as I'm aware, Netflix uses the Microsoft Silverlite player, which is not
particularly accessible with VO. You can go to a page and play files, but the
controls for playback are hidden from VO. If you've heard differently, let me
know. The upshot is that if Silverlite is the only way to access video
playback, it doesn't matter what browser you use. Each browser will need a
Silverlite plugin in order to play the videos.

If you want to try Google Chrome, it is easy to get going once you download.
The only major problem with VO is that frames on web pages aren't read well at
all.

Teresa

Re: managing mail on the IPhone.

2012-03-02 Thread Jessica
I looked under my mail settings but couldn't find that option. Unfortunately,
the only one I could find even remotely close to that, was the preview option,
which gave me "every 50, 100, 200 500 or 1000," messages I think it was, but
nothing about changing how many were downloaded, unless I had push enabled,
which I don't, sense I don't know what it is, and hear it eats up your battery
life.

  Hi Jessica,

this is not a area I use a lot, as once I got it working I never touched
the settings again. But, I can offer a few general tips and hopefully others
can provide you more detailed help.

First, I remember when I first started using my Google account on the iPhone
there was no delete button. You have a archive button instead. Use that as
you would delete and don't move things to trash. Someone else will need to
chime in on how to get the delete button to show up, that is if you want it to.
some people prefer the Archive button.

In settings you can change the mail behavior for downloading messages. I
have mine set up to only download when I open Mail. this will give you the
behavior you want. Again a better expert can walk you through the settings but
if you look under settings then mail, you should find it.

Hope this info helps a little.

Re: managing mail on the IPhone.

2012-03-02 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

you can't disable mail from downloading messages upon launch of the app. It
just assumes, if your opening mail, you want to read mail. So, it retreives
mail from the server without no further prompting.

Re: Braille Touch: please help get Apple onboard

2012-03-02 Thread Sean Murphy
I am in the same camp as Scott. I am not sure if the Braille input will work
effectively. The design of the screen will have to be universally flexible for
all hand sizes. On top of that you will not get the physical feedback that you
get on other Braille Input devices.

I am always willing to try. But good luck in getting Apple to put it in. They
are a very much a close shop.

My other concern with this would be that not all places where you use a
keyboard are capable of being used in landscape orientation. I don't know if
apple would implement a keyboard that could only be used in landscape.

Re: Mac + Chrome + Netflix = html5?

2012-03-02 Thread Teresa Cochran
Minor correction in case folks are looking for the plugins: it's Silverlight
with a g-h and not i-t-e., as I had spelled it earlier. Also, I just tried
Silverlight with Google Chrome, and the controls are not accessible with VO.
It's possible to play Netflix videos, as it is in Safari, bt not possible to
use the play and pause controls, etc.

Push basically gets messages all the time. Turning it off should give
you a "check for mail every" option which you double tap. Once you do,
you can select how often you want mail to check for messages.

time machine

How do you find out the status of Time machine.Hi all and what it is currently
backing up.

>From the status menu you can see the time machine showing it is prepping for a
>backup. But there is no time, file/directory being updated, etc?

Also, how do you verify what information is being backed up?

I have gone into time machine and cannot work out the GUI. It looks like a
normal Finder window. The preferences are fine.

Any tips are welcomed.

Hi,

you can't disable mail from downloading messages upon launch of the app. It
just assumes, if your opening mail, you want to read mail. So, it retreives
mail from the server without no further prompting.

Hi Jessica,

this is not a area I use a lot, as once I got it working I never touched
the settings again. But, I can offer a few general tips and hopefully
others can provide you more detailed help.

First, I remember when I first started using my Google account on the
iPhone there was no delete button. You have a archive button instead.
Use that as you would delete and don't move things to trash. Someone else
will need to chime in on how to get the delete button to show up, that is
if you want it to. some people prefer the Archive button.

In settings you can change the mail behavior for downloading messages. I
have mine set up to only download when I open Mail. this will give you
the behavior you want. Again a better expert can walk you through the
settings but if you look under settings then mail, you should find it.

Hope this info helps a little.

Re: managing mail on the IPhone.

2012-03-02 Thread Alex Hall
It kept re-downloading the same ones? That's not right. Maybe check
your imap settings on gmail's website?

No, there is no way to stop it from getting mail while you are in the
mail app. After all, you are there to check mail, so it tries to help
out by always getting the newest messages. Once it syncs itself with
the website it should be fine. Maybe just leave it alone for a while
until everything is updated?

I actually went back and looked at that, and ended up finding it under the

Push basically gets messages all the time. Turning it off should give
you a "check for mail every" option which you double tap. Once you do,
you can select how often you want mail to check for messages.

Re: managing mail on the IPhone.

2012-03-02 Thread Alex Hall
Yes, while the app is open this happens. The mail fetching (sorry I
gave the wrong label) is for when mail is not actively running. As I
said, try letting it sync completely (I assume you have not yet done
this) and things should calm down. Otherwise, you just get a whole lot
of mail and there is not much that can be done. I usually just select
some messages, delete them, and then if new ones have come in I take
care of those as well. Sometimes the mail app will select the wrong
messages when you have some selected and new ones arrive, so watch for
that. That is the other reason I do this only some messages at a time.

Howdy everyone,

The only option I can find is to move them to the trash but when I do

Does anyone know how I can get them off the desktop? Thanks for the
