if interaction went away

2012-03-01 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Hi there,

Considering that OS 10.8 is supposedly going to be much like IOS in many
respects, it occurred to me that perhaps we might see in 10.8 the vanishing of
the concept of interaction. For those of us with Iphones, that might not be
such a big deal; but, I just can't help wondering. How would y'all feel if the
very concept of interaction, (something which we just do without thinking in
Mac OS), were to go away? Bear in mind that I have no indications that
interaction will be going away in 10.8; still, I thought it might be fun to see
how the group feels about that.

Hi.
I'm not sure how I'd feel if interaction was to go away. I think it would work
if there was a way to jump from container to container like you can on an iPad.
Of course, the screen would have to be broken up like that first.
An interesting idea though.
I too would be interested in other people's ideas on this.

Re: if interaction went away

2012-03-01 Thread Jacob Schmude
Hi
I wouldn't mind it so long as there was another way to easily jump from one
large control to another. As things stand at the moment however, I think the
concept of interaction fits Voiceover. Remember that OS X is not primarily a
touch screen os, and I'm much faster than I am on Windows because of the quick
overview that interaction allows. It's also a handy feature when designing user
interfaces, since I can see where the container is going to be positioned via
the trackpad commander, then interact with it to quickly get a feel for how the
various items will appear inside the container.

Re: if interaction went away

I think interaction makes a lot of sense when using a keyboard, but it isn't
quite so essential with a trackpad. I don't really see the concept going away,
because so much more information is displayed with a desktop than with a mobile

Re: if interaction went away

2012-03-01 Thread Mr. L. Alexander
if the concept of the standard method of keyboard interaction were to "Fade
away" then how would desktop and notebook users interact with voiceover? maybe
if there was a more simplified rework of voiceover so that rather than long
winded interaction proceedures to pages, objects and windows, we could have a
more intuitive, single layer process. something like the old screen readers
used to do.

toggle number words/digits

2012-03-01 Thread Traci
Hi all,

Is there a way to toggle the way VO speaks numbers?

I was reading a recipe, and it sounded really odd reading 1 1/2 cups as 112
cups. Lol!

It would be really handy to have a quick key stroke to toggle words/digits.

Thanks,

Re: if interaction went away

2012-03-01 Thread Jacob Schmude
Hi
The trouble with what the old screen readers do in Windows when implemented on
Mac is that there are quite a few apps that don't understand the standard
methods of keyboard navigation. Many apps don't let you tab to all controls, or
arrow through lists. So, even if interaction were to be axed, we would still
need some way to handle these. In Windows, you have the mouse pointer movement
commands of your screen reader of choice, but that's not quite as efficient
when you have a large amount of data that must be scrolled repeatedly to find
what you want. I'm sure it could be streamlined, but I doubt the concept will
ever be completely removed at least, not as long as OS X remains primarily a
keyboard and mouse driven system.

Re: Where are VoiceOver's labels stored?

2012-03-01 Thread Steve Holmes
I don't know specific file names but one could create some labels and
then jump into the shell and do some 'ls -ltr' commands on directories
to see what the latest file creation date might be. I forget the
command option to do this recursively but the idea here would be to
find the most recently changed or created files and then go into your
time machine backup and match on the names.

I would certainly hope VO isn't this unstable. Dropping files like
that is not acceptable.

Re: Apple TV

2012-03-01 Thread jason lefevers
Hi , first I would like to intraduce myself , My name is jason LeFevers I live
in Baltimore MD USA. I have been blind for about 9 years now, I lost my sight
in a car accident while serving in the Airforce. I have only been using apple
products bor a few years now with the purchase of the iphone 3gs. I am now
loving all apple products . The toys I have currently are, iphone 4s, Macbook
pro, apple tv, and airport extreme. I also have my PC with Jaws 13 that i also
use. I have only had the macbook since and apple tv 2nd gen since christmass. I
am still learning the voiceover on the mac but its getting easier to do things
. I wanted to comment on the apple tv and say how much I enjoy it. For the
first time since loosing my sight I am able to know what is on the tv and
select what I want to watch with no sighted help. I use it alot to play tv
shows for my kids when I am alone with them using netflicks, and tv shows that
i purchased from Itunes. I also have it hooked up to a nice stereo and take
advantage of the airplay feature to play music from my itunes and pandora threw
my stereo using my Iphone. I would be happy to answer any specific questions
about it . thanks I look forward to learning more from you all about apple and
other accessable toys. jason

PS I hear rumers that the Apple Itv will be released sometime this year I am
really excited to see what this tv will offer. Feb 25, 2012, at 11:30 PM,

Re: toggle number words/digits

2012-03-01 Thread Red.Falcon
Hi Traci!
OK just open verbosity with vo+V and arrow left or right until you find numbers
and you can change it to words with the up/down arrows!
Then just press escape!

Keyboard shortcuts

2012-03-01 Thread Bill Holton
Hi.
I created a keyboard shortcut in the keyboard system preferences to use CTRL-f
to forward a message and another ctrl-l to move the current email into a
different folder. They both worked perfectly the first day, now I can't get
either to work again. They are both still in the shortcut table under
applications, Mail. Any idea what I may have done wrong? Thanks.

Re: toggle number words/digits

2012-03-01 Thread Garth Humphreys
Press VO+V, you then may need to press N by it's self to change to toggling
number verbosity. After pressing N if needed you can use up and down arrows to
toggle what is read.

Hope this makes sense.

Re: if interaction went away

2012-03-01 Thread Ricardo Walker
I totally disagree. For example, have you ever used iTunes on windows? Its
tabbing hell. To change a setting on your IOS device, you have to tab like a
mad person because there is no scroll area where settings are grouped. Or, if
you just want to bypass that stuff and get to something else, oh well. You
still have to navigate through all that stuff.

Mac Book Air & cooling fan?

2012-03-01 Thread Traci
Hi all, I still consider myself new to the whole Mac experience.

I was just watching a tv show via Netflix, and my Macbook Air's fan kicked in
big time.

1. Is this normal?
2. If so, will it damage the Mac while watching a tv show or movie?
3. Is it possible the MBA isn't meant for movie watching?

Lol, maybe the Mac doesn't like silverlight.

Thanks everyone,

Mac + Chrome + Netflix = html5?

I've been googling to see alternatives to streaming Netflix and came across
many articles talking about Netflix and html5 for Chrome and Linex.

I was wondering if the Chrome experience was better with VO?

It's called CalcMadeEasy Free and there's also the pro version. They're working

Re: if interaction went away

2012-03-01 Thread Mary Otten
I've never used Itunes on Windows, but I will say I find it no end irritating
to have to interact with a group just to find out of a checkbox is checked or
not in the books table. Or I have to interact with a group just to go to the
link for an item in the app store or go to a book title in the app store.
That's a lot of clicking just to get access to a link. and then there are the
listen links in itunes album tables. It isn't good enough just to focus on the
link. You have to interact with it to click it. It didn't use to be that way
with the checkboxes. I wish they'd put it back the way it use to be.

Hi,

Chrome works just fine on the Mac now. You can just use it with voiceover.
The screen reader plugin isn't necessary.

Re: Mac Book Air & cooling fan?

2012-03-01 Thread Garth Humphreys
Hi

I must admit to being surprised at just how hot my MBA gets at times. It can
put out a lot of heat. I am not concerned about this but it has made me go
looking for the perfect hard tray to place it on when it bed etc. I find you
definitely need something to put it on so that there is good air flow.

It has a heat sensor which will shut it off if it gets so hot that the heat
would cause any damage so I wouldn't worry about the fan kicking in. Having
said This, one thing that will shorten the life span of these rechargeable
batteries is heat so always make sure you allow for good air flow.

Ok, how in the world do you even use IMovie in the first place? I'd heard
it was accessible, so tried to use it to make a vidio of me and my
2-year-old, and couldn't figure out how to do a thing with it.

Subject: iMovie drag and drop problem

I have an issue all the sudden with iMovie.
Normally when I make my videos I drag and drop the title, video, and music
all into place and drop them. This has been working great the last few
months. I jsut made a video last week and it worked.
Well now for some reason when I select an item to move, no matter where I am
it says "Mouse down on Apple". I dont know why it's doing this. Cursor
tracking is on and I have made sure to move the cursor to the Voice Over
cursor but it still wont work. It works everywhere else, just not in iMovie.

Do any of you have any ideas on things to try? Thanks everyone!

uninstalling Fan Control Under Lion

2012-03-01 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Hi there,

I am contemplating installing Fan control, but, I won't do it unless I can
figure something out. In SL, one could remove Fan Control by going to:
~/Library/Preferences/Demon Fan control and then, one went to c/Library/Startup
Items/Fan Control and removed the files there. After that, reset the SLRC or
what ever it's called and so on. However, under Lion, Even though I unhide the
~/Library folder structure with Tinker Tool and remove the Fan control Prefs
from it's place there, there's nothing under the c/Library/Startup directory to
remove. Where do I look for the Fan control Startup files to remove under
Lion? I thought perhaps it might be somewhere in c/Library/System but not sure.

Thanks.

Re: iMovie drag and drop problem

2012-03-01 Thread Mike Malarsie
Before it started actin up I could do a lot of basics. Trim clips, add music
and titles, as well as transitions.
Now I can only trim and merge clips.
I can walk u thru it via Skype or I can send u a link to my YouTube videos
about it

where am I going wrong with this?

2012-03-01 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Hi,

In an attempt to unhide my ~/Library Directory, I'm using the following
terminal command:

"chflags nohidden /Users//Library/

No luck with that so I'm tryin this:

"chflags nohidden ~/Library/"

No luck with that either. Note, the lines of code I'm using above are exactly
the way I typed them in minus the quotes of course.

thanks.

Re: scientific calculator after some use

2012-03-01 Thread Emrah
Hi there,

I gave up on built in calculators and now remotely connect on my Linux box to
use Qalc.
I am sure qalc can be installed on a Mac with no difficulties.
Qalc uses a command line interface.

I don't think the built-in calculator will do it. The only Deg button is
just to switch modes from degrees to radians. There are a jillion
calculators in the app store so you might want to take a poke through
there. The LXVII calculator is one of those HP RPN calculators which
should do the trick. Every button has three additional functions beyond
its stated feature but on the 1 button there were R< and >P functions. If
I left VO focus on there for a few seconds it read the help text saying it
was rectangular to polar coordinates. On the third row of buttons are
three unlabeled buttons which are the f, g and h buttons (which also read
in the help text if you wait). They activate the secondary functions
written in different colors. So the g button says it activates the blue
functions which VO-A actually says are turquoise, which would be the >P
secondary function on the 1 key. The f key activates the
yellow functions which VO actually reads as 'a shade of merliwood" or
something like that. So that would be the R< on the one key. I also
noticed that it didn't announce the values in the display at the top
without my moving VO focus there so I set up a hotspot VO-shift-1 and then
turned on monitoring of the hotspot VO-Command-shift-1.

 Hope that makes some sense.

Re: managing mail on the IPhone.

2012-03-01 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Jessica,

this is not a area I use a lot, as once I got it working I never
touched the settings again. But, I can offer a few general tips and hopefully
others can provide you more detailed help.

First, I remember when I first started using my Google account on the iPhone
there was no delete button. You have a archive button instead. Use that as
you would delete and don't move things to trash. Someone else will need to
chime in on how to get the delete button to show up, that is if you want it to.
some people prefer the Archive button.

In settings you can change the mail behavior for downloading messages. I have
mine set up to only download when I open Mail. this will give you the behavior
you want. Again a better expert can walk you through the settings but if you
look under settings then mail, you should find it.

Hope this info helps a little.

A little spellcheck before pressing send please?

2012-03-01 Thread Emrah
Guys,

For some reason, ever since I upgraded to Lion, VO announces me misspelled
words when I read emails, not just when composing.

I guess it's ok not to always start with some sort of a polite greeting... I
don't always do it when replying to messages. However, I think we should
dedicate a bit more attention to our spelling. Some emails on the list are
really creepy!

Please make a little effort to improve your spelling please. I am not talking
about people with English difficulties. I am referring to people that sound
like native American / English and do not review their emails before sending.
English is my 4th language and I do try to sound coherent and use the right
punctuation. It looks and plays nicer when using a text to speech!

Thanks!

2012-03-01 Thread Jessica
Oh wow, thanx so much for those, I thought I was going to lose it if this kept
up lol. I love my IPhone, but some of the layout's are hard to get used to at
the same time, especially considering the fact that there aren't any context
menu's like the Windows mobile phones I've been used to using for years, which
in most cases, I actually like a lot better, because everything I need is in
plain view and easier to find, but wasn't so easy this time.

Re: A little spellcheck before pressing send please?

2012-03-01 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Can we return to her original request? I agree. to speak frankly, not only is
it that some people do not bother to spell check; but also, that they are
thinking way ahead of what they're typing. As a result, they don't pay
attention to the letters they are pressing on the keyboard. That makes for
just plain sloppy writing, and, sometimes, you can't even read the message
because the typing itself is inexcusably bad. Lucky this isn't one of those
English grammar lists where one single space or letter or punctuation mark out
of place and the moderator throws you off the list. I've never been on or read
from such a list; but, I'm told they do exist.

Sincerely,
The Constantly Barefooted Ray!!!

I don't always do it when replying to messages. However, I think we should
dedicate a bit more attention to our spelling. Some emails on the list are
 really creepy!

Please make a little effort to improve your spelling please. I am not
talking about people with English difficulties. I am referring to people

Re: A little spellcheck before pressing send please?

2012-03-01 Thread Louie P. (Pete) Nalda
I think part of the problem is these silly smartphones without physical
keyboards. That's what I was using today when I hit the letter y instead of
the letter t. Android doesn't even have the decency to tell you that you've
misspelled a word. On top of that, going back to edit is like looking for a
needle in a haystack. It's why I promptly corrected myself when Ricardo asked
me to repeat what I'd written. I don't know if IOS handles this any better, as
my IPad is in the shop, but I'd venture a bet it does. Another problem is
speech to text, which I've heard a lot of visually impaired users saying they
like to use. Even if using Zoom only in Mac OS, you get a nice red line if you
type something misspelled. So, I don't know, on my part, I don't judge too
critically when I see typing errors. Your milage may very.

My name has caused me issues that are less fun than this. :)

Re: managing mail on the IPhone.

2012-03-01 Thread Alex Hall
I just googled this. To get a delete button:
1. Go to settings, then mail, contacts, calendars, and double tap your
gmail account.
2. Find the switch button called "archive messages". Double tap it to
turn it off.
3. Now, in mail, that archive button will be delete, and messages you
select for deletion will go to the trash folder.
4. While you're in here, check out the other options. Use the "check
for mail" to select when mail gets updated, and so on. There is a mail
preview option, which shows part of the message on the screen. It
isn't accessible (vo just skips it) so turn this off if you want to
fit more messages on each page.

I'm really glad you asked this, because I never knew about it. I no
longer have to go through three steps to trash messages, it's a quick
double tap! Thanks.

Re: Mac Book Air & cooling fan?

I think the heat comes from the processor rather than the disc drive. The thing
is that there is very little space in the air so you feeall the heat coming
straight through the body. It probably uses the case as a sort of heat sink.

All the interacting in iTunes can be annoying at times. But overall I like the
interaction model. Ricardo if you ever find yourself using iTunes on windows
try the F6. It jumps you past some of that tabbinghell.
