 Hi John,

Instead of memorizing your dropbox public folder address, why don't you
take advantage of Lion's text expansion capability and define a shortcut
for the prefix string giving your dropbox public folder address? For
example, you could set a character string named "dbpf" to expand to
"http://dl.dropbox/u/12345678/"; whenever you typed it in Mail or TextEdit.

Since Michael just pointed Ezzie to a YouTube video with instructions on
how to do this yesterday, in order to set a string that gets expanded for
signatures, I can just paste in his text giving the link:

Ok here is the link. Let me know if you need me to clarify anything. It
should be clear enough if my memory hasn't failed me. Enjoy!

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKxWbBuDSSI

Very briefly, you go to the System Preferences > Language & Text menu and
select the "Text" tab. Then you press the "Add" button to enter a new
entry to the "Substitutions" table, and type in the string you want
expanded (e.g., "dbpf" in the above example), and the replacement string
 (e.g."http://dl.dropbox/u/12345678/";).

Then, in the applications that support such expansion substitution, like
Mail and TextEdit, you navigate to the "Edit" menu on the menu bar, and
arrow down to the "Substitutions" menu, then right arrow to the submenu
and navigate to "Substitutions" to check this option.

That should save you some typing and memorization.

 HTH. Cheers,

 Esther

Re: Icon Command For the Mac

2012-02-29 Thread Scott Howell
I'm not sure what you are trying to do when you say you want to bring up icons.
If you are referring to the dock it is VO-d. In fact you can get a list of
VoiceOver commands just by looking in the Help Center of your Mac and for VO
specifically you can do VO-? (question mark). There are lots of resources
available to you where you can quickly locate answers to the most commonly
asked questions.

Yes.

If your not running IOS 5, you need to update the operating system through

Podcast on amadeus pro

2012-02-29 Thread Allison Manzino
Hi all,

Due to popular demand, I would love to do a podcast on Amadeus Pro. I'm
thinking about recording it tomorrow or maybe later today. I wanted to ask you
if you could send suggestions to me privately offlist. I want to make this
podcast helpful to all, and I have some ideas in mind. But if you could send
along your suggestions, I can taylor it to specific features. I was thinking
about highlighting the following features:
1. Markers
2. insertion point to playhead, and playhead to insertion point,
3. adding and removing tracks,
4. Panning
5. creating ringtones
6. adding a new mic in advanced settings

If you can think of anything or want to see any specific features, please send
them along. Thank you so much for asking me to do this podcast, I am honored to
help.

Have a great day.

Allison

Re: Icon Command For the Mac

2012-02-29 Thread Garth Humphreys
Hi Christine

I am guessing you mean the grid of icons for all your apps - for some reason
the name of this escapes me at the moment but you can bring it up by just
pressing the F4 key if you have these keys set to hardware option or FN+F4 if
you've switched them to software.

You can switch to different pages of apps by pressing Option+arrow.

I prefer to press Command+Shift+A in the finder to bring up my Application
folder. The main reason for this is that you can then use first letter
navigation to find the app you want. .
Hope this is what you were looking for.

Possible bug with data detectors in mail lion last version?

2012-02-29 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Hi all,

I am not sure how to reproduce this problem but wondered if any of you have had
issues with this so I can make a better feedback report to apple.

I have received an Email with a phone number but even after interacting with
message text, the data detector was not shown as a link. I navigated to it and
with ctrl-shift-m could not bring up the add to contacts menu, just the look up
on google , etc. I restarted vo and then it worked.

Anyone experienced anything similar?

Best,

Ioana

 Hi Mike,

Just to expand on my comment about issuing the two-finger flick down from
the text area of the book to get continuous reading going in iBooks. Since
this gesture is meant to "read all" on the current page, starting from
your present position, if you wanted to find out about the page chooser at
the bottom of the screen the first time you checked the layout of controls
in iBooks, and were starting from the buttons for Library and table of
contents, you wouldn't want VoiceOver to keep reading to the end of the
book before telling you that there were additional controls at the bottom
 of the page.

So what happens is that a two-finger flick down initiated from the area
with button controls at the top of the screen just reads the text that is
on the current page, then goes on to read the controls at the bottom of
the screen. But if you initiate the two-finger flick down from within the
text area, your "read all from present point" gesture continues to read
through the text area, only, and will automatically go on to the next page.

This originally confused me, too, the first time I encountered it and
didn't have VO read the rest of the page. But then it made sense that it
 would work that way.

Most people touch the center of the screen when they do their two-finger
flick down, so that's why they automatically get the continuous reading.

You'll still notice a slight pause when you reach the end of the current
page. That's because iBooks does a simulated page turn graphic. This
annoyed the heck out of some early reviewers (who were not visually
impaired. Andy Ihnatko wrote in his initial, otherwise positive, review of
iBooks for the Chicago Sun: "I do wish I could disable the fancy page-curl
animation. On an iPhone 3GS, at least, there’s a slight, but annoying,
additional pause as the app does a whole lot of math.") If this really
annoys you, changing the font size to be small will put a lot more text on
the screen before you get that slight pause.

 HTH. Cheers,

 Esther

Wouldn't it be nice if Apple built a rugged version of the iPad?

2012-02-29 Thread Mr. L. Alexander
Hey guys.

it's me. again.. lol

first off... colour software discussed yesterday has helped a heck of a lot.

Secondly and my main point on this TADA!

Wouldn't it be nice if apple could build a rugged version of the iPad? for
someone like me working in heavy environments such as dusty sites or areas
where grease, etc can be a problem, if apple could design a beefed up version?

on the same point, a rugged version of the macbook pro.

if anyone's ever dealt with Dell's pro series industrial laptops, sony's tough
systems and Panasonic's Toughbooks, then it's a pretty reasonable standpoint...

OK it's not an accessibility based issue as such but just a good idea.

lol

cheers guys.

I prefer to press Command+Shift+A in the finder to bring up my Application
folder. The main reason for this is that you can then use first letter
navigation to find the app you want. .
Hope this is what you were looking for.

showing user library in time machine backup

2012-02-29 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi list,

There are some files and folders I would like to get to on my time machine back
up. The problem is, the user library is hidden. Can someone tell me how to
unhide the user library folder in a time machine backup? I know how to do this
on my Mac HD via the go menu. Just can't figure it out on time machine.

Thanks.

Re: LookTel Recognizer

Yes. Because it will associate the picture with the recording. So if you take a
picture and it's a pink shirt, and the recording says pink shirt you will know
that. It won't know the difference between the pink shirt and a black shirt. I
am quite sure this is true, though I have not fully tested that aspect.

Re: Taking a signiture to use on an account which I already have created

2012-02-29 Thread Mr. L. Alexander
when you create signatures in preferences, you first create the signature by VO
to add signature which is found under the 2nd window in the signatures area.
this then creates a signature file for you to go into the edit window. create
your signature. this is automatically available.

if as an example you have multiple accounts and want your signature on all
accounts, navigate to each email address one by one and then tab to a field
which will most probably say "none" interact with it and it will give your
signature. select it and it's done. this will be the default signature for your
account.

sorry if it sounds a bit sketchy, had to answer but rushing around trying to
find a digidesign 003 interface at a bargain price.

Re: Wouldn't it be nice if Apple built a rugged version of the iPad?

2012-02-29 Thread Chris Blouch
Since iPads have no moving parts (other than a couple buttons) they are
much more durable than the laptops of yore. The main issue is dropping
it so it lands on it's corner on something hard, like concrete. You
can't put much over the screen as the capacitive touch display would
stop working. So maybe something like iballz would do the trick:

http://www.iballz.info/

They are basically rubber balls that slip over each corner of the ipad.
Apparently some schools use these with kids. They also have a special
case you can wrap around your iPad while leaving the balls in place.

Where are VoiceOver's labels stored?

Hi all.
Does anyone know where VoiceUnder stores it's labels?
The stupid piece of code known as VoiceUnder in Lion, has just randomly deleted
all of the labels that I have put on the buttons in VLC and I'd like to attempt
to restore them from my time machine backup.
Can anyone help?
Thanks.
PS: I think it's time for Lion to go back to the circus. I think even Windows
Vista worked better with a screen reader when it was released. Hopefully,
Mountain Lion will be better that Lion or I just might have to find a new OS or
go back to windows

Re: Netflix on Mac?

2012-02-29 Thread Teresa Cochran
The site works fairly well on the Mac. You do have to download the silverlite
plugin, which safari will find for you. The downside is that as far as I know,
there isn't a way to use the controls for the player, i.e. play, pause, etc.
You would have to start the video over again. Someone correct me, please, if I
am wrong. I'd love to be wrong in this.

It's the 27th annual international technology and persons with

If you open the time machine backup in the finder just like it was your regular

About My Last Post and Tune-In Radio For The Iphone

2012-02-29 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hey Guys. In my last post about wanting to know if there was sites I could go
to on my Mac to watch NBA Games or listen to them. Well, after writing it, I
don't know what hit me, but something told me to check my iPhone because I have
an app called Tune In Radio. So anyway, I went into Tune-In Radio, found the
sports section, and sure enough the game I wanted to listen was there. This is
another reason why I'm beginning to love my iPhone and if you can't find a
certain station online, odds are that Tune In Radio will have it and the best
part, it's accessible and free. I highly recommend this app.

Re: About My Last Post and Tune-In Radio For The Iphone

2012-02-29 Thread Alex Hall
I second (well, third) this. The app is fully accessible, has a great
deal of content, and even buffers it so you can rewind, pause, or
fastforward (that last, of course, only if you have paused before). It
even works with the two finger double tap to pause and play the radio
station in the background.

Re: Watching Sports Games On The Mac

I was trying to find something like this for the NFL but they have
locked everything into DirecTV or the regular broadcast TV networks so
there was no (legal) online option to be found for any amount of money,
unless you lived outside the USA. Didn't know if the NBA did something
similar. That was how I ended up doing the eyeTV and Antenna thing so I
could cancel the recurring cable TV bill.

Re: scientific calculator after some use

2012-02-29 Thread Chris Blouch
I don't think the built-in calculator will do it. The only Deg button is
just to switch modes from degrees to radians. There are a jillion
calculators in the app store so you might want to take a poke through
there. The LXVII calculator is one of those HP RPN calculators which
should do the trick. Every button has three additional functions beyond
its stated feature but on the 1 button there were R< and >P functions.
If I left VO focus on there for a few seconds it read the help text
saying it was rectangular to polar coordinates. On the third row of
buttons are three unlabeled buttons which are the f, g and h buttons
(which also read in the help text if you wait). They activate the
secondary functions written in different colors. So the g button says it
activates the blue functions which VO-A actually says are turquoise,
which would be the >P secondary function on the 1 key. The f key
activates the
yellow functions which VO actually reads as 'a shade of merliwood" or
something like that. So that would be the R< on the one key. I also
noticed that it didn't announce the values in the display at the top
without my moving VO focus there so I set up a hotspot VO-shift-1 and
then turned on monitoring of the hotspot VO-Command-shift-1.

Hope that makes some sense.

This sounds as if it may solve a number of problems. See article below.

N Y Times Tech news for the week of Thursday 2/23/2012
Windows on the iPad, and Speedy

 By [7]DAVID POGUE

You're probably paying something like $60 a month for high-speed
Internet. I'm paying $5 a month, and my connection is 1,000 times
faster.

Your [8]iPad can't play Flash videos on the Web. Mine can.

Your copy of Windows needs constant updating and patching and
protection against viruses and spyware. Mine is always clean and always
up-to-date.

No, I'm not some kind of smug techno-elitist; you can have all of that,
too. All you have to do is sign up for a radical iPad service called
OnLive Desktop Plus.

It's a tiny app -- about 5 megabytes. When you open it, you see a
standard Windows 7 desktop, right there on your iPad. The full, latest
versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet Explorer and Adobe Reader
are set up and ready to use -- no installation, no serial numbers, no
pop-up balloons nagging you to update this or that. It may be the least
annoying version of Windows you've ever used.

That's pretty impressive -- but not as impressive as what's going on
behind the scenes. The PC that's driving your iPad Windows experience
is, in fact, a "farm" of computers at one of three data centers
thousands of miles away. Every time you tap the screen, scroll a list
or type on the on-screen keyboard, you're sending signals to those
distant computers. The screen image is blasted back to your iPad with
astonishingly little lag.

There's an insane amount of technology behind this stunt -- 10 years in
the making, according to the company's founder. (He's a veteran of
Apple's original QuickTime team and Microsoft's WebTV and Xbox teams.)
OnLive Desktop builds on the company's original business, a service
that lets gamers play high-horsepower video games on Macs or
low-powered Windows computers like netbooks.

The free version of the OnLive Desktop service arrived in January. It
gives you Word, Excel and PowerPoint, a few basic Windows apps (like
Paint, Media Player, Notepad and Calculator), and 2 gigabytes of
storage.

Plenty of apps give you stripped-down versions of Office on the iPad.
But OnLive Desktop gives you the complete Windows Office suite. In
Word, you can do fancy stuff like tracking changes and high-end
typography. In PowerPoint, you can make slide shows that the iPad
projects with all of the cross fades, zooms and animations intact.

Thanks to Microsoft's own Touch Pack add-on, all of this works with
touch-screen gestures. You can pinch and spread two fingers to zoom in
and out of your Office documents. You can use Windows' impressive
handwriting recognition to enter text (although a Bluetooth keyboard
works better). You can flick to scroll through a list.

Instead of clicking the mouse on things, you can simply tap, although a
stylus works better than a fingertip; many of the Windows controls are
too tiny for a finger to tap precisely. (On a real Windows PC, you
could open the Control Panel to enlarge the controls for touch use --
but OnLive's simulated PC is lacking the Control Panel, which is one of
its few downsides.)

OnLive Desktop is seamless and fairly amazing. And fast; on what other
PC does Word open in one second?

But the only way to get files onto and off OnLive Desktop is using a
Documents folder on the desktop. To access it, you have to visit
OnLive's Web site on your actual PC.

The news today is the new service, called OnLive Desktop Plus. It's not
free -- it costs $5 a month -- but it adds Adobe Reader, Internet
Explorer and a 1-gigabit-a-second Internet connection.

That's not a typo. And "1-gigabit Internet" means the fastest
connection you've ever used in your life -- on your iPad. It means
speeds 500 or 1,000 times as fast as what you probably get at home. It
means downloading a 20-megabyte file before your finger lifts from the
glass.

You get the same speed in both directions. You can upload a 30-megabyte
file in one second.

And remember, you're using a state-of-the-art Windows computer, so you
can play any kind of video you might encounter online. OnLive Desktop
Plus turns the iPad from a tablet that can't play Flash videos at all
-- into the smoothest Flash player you've ever used. And yes, that
includes watching free TV at Hulu.com, which you can't otherwise do on
the iPad.

The Plus version's Internet connection makes a world of difference. Now
you can use DropBox to get files onto and off your iPad from other
gadgets, like Macs and PCs. (That, the company says, is why the Plus
service still offers only 2 gigabytes of storage for your files; it
