Keyboard shortcuts

2012-02-13 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Hi,

in system preferences there is a possibility to create your own shortcuts for
each program. That works fine. But only for commands without … (three dots) at
the end.

I remember once someone posted a solution for that but can't find it anymore.

So can anyone tell me how to create shortcuts for commands in a menue like
"Silents …".

Thanks and all the best
Jürgen

Re: Keyboard shortcuts

2012-02-13 Thread Dean Adams
Hi Jurgen,
You can assign program short cuts by using the keyboard commanders in
voice over utility and choose commanders and stop interacting and VO right
arrow to keyboard and then VO Space bar and then VO right arrow to the check
box that says use keyboard comanders and press Vo Space bar then Vo right arrow
to the keyboard commanders table where you can assign quick keys to open your
most used programs. You will find ones there for safari and mail by default the
keyboard commanders uses the right option key then a key of your own choosing,
but there are already some being used like s and the right option key for
safari and m and the right option key for mail. First interact with the
keyboard commanders table and check what keys are being used you can Vo up and
down arrow to check which keys are already being used and to check which
actions are being activated by VO right arrow to the action for each key so for
example once you have interacted with the commanders table VO up and down arrow
till it says the S key then VO right arrow till it says command open program
safari, you can only use one key for each action. To add another action for two
key press actions do the following.
Stop interacting with the keyboard commanders table and VO right arrow to the
add button it will then automatically land you on the keyboard commanders table
press the key you want to use like I use the letter e for text edit, then you
have to interact with the keyboard commanders table where you have just put the
e for text edit then make sure you are on the e in the table then VO right
arrow to the next section which is command menu press VO Space bar and then VO
down Arrow till it says custom commands VO right arrow it will say open program
press VO Space bar then VO right arrow till you get to the browse area then
interact and find text edit stop interacting and then VO right arrow to the
Open default button and there you go you have created a two key short cut to
text edit . So to go to text edit you only have to press the right option key
and the E key . You can do this for as many times as you want but you can only
use 1 letter for each operation . I have done this for skype text edit Vlc
player mac mail and safari and DVD player.
Hope this is not to long winded .

Re: Keyboard shortcuts

2012-02-13 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Hi Dean,

thanks for your detailed diskription. But I didn't meant the keyboard commander
in VoiceOver.

What I'm looking for is the keyboard section in system preferences. There you
have the possibility to create shortcuts for each command in a programs menue.
Just look at it and try it out. It's wonderful.

But it's not possible to simply give a shortcut to a command with an elipsis at
the end. So again:

Can anyone give me a hint how to create shortcuts for such commands in the
menue?

I'm not sure about it but I think it might have been Esther who posted an
information to that.

Thanks and all the best

Does your printer have any USB connection? I hear that the serial adapters

2012-02-13 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Scott.
I just got this really good message from PDFPEN. The support person tested an
IRS form with VoiceOver, and he got it to work. So, I guess I'm doing something
wrong. I sent to him a message saying it wasn't working for me, and I put my
phone number on it. If i get it to work, I'll et you guys know because if what
he said is right, then this program is a great thing for us. I'll keep you guys
informed about this because the guy seems to know what he's doing because for
one thing, he tested the right type of form to start with. These forms he
tested do work under Windows.

Re: Keyboard shortcuts

2012-02-13 Thread Esther
[[rate 300]]Hi Jürgen and Others,

The ellipsis character is typed using a keyboard shortcut with the Option key.
On a US or other English language input keyboard, this combination can be typed
by pressing Option+semi-colon. Assuming that you are using a German input
language keyboard, this combination can be typed by pressing Option+period.

However, a more general way to get the exact menu command you need for a
keyboard shortcut is to use VO-Shift-C, which is the VoiceOver shortcut to copy
the last spoken phrase to the clipboard. Then paste in this phrase with
Command-V. I usually paste into a TextEdit window as an intermediate step to
check the copied phrase, but you don't need to do this.

So as an example, navigate to the Apple menu on the menu bar with VO-M or
Control-F2, arrow down to "Software Update …", or any menu item that is
announced with "ellipsis" at the end, use VO-Shift-C to copy the phrase, then
paste it into a TextEdit window. If you press Command-Left arrow to move your
insertion point cursor to the beginning of the line, then hold down the Shift
key to select, and start tapping with the Right arrow key, you'll hear
VoiceOver announce the characters one by one as you select them, until you get
to the final ellipsis. At this point you can use Command-V again to copy your
highlighted phrase, and paste it into the "Menu title" text field of the
Keyboard Shortcuts pane of System Preferences.

For Jürgen's question, I'll assume that he has the Skype application as one of
his active apps. Then he could define a shortcut as follows:

1. VO-M or Control-F2 to the Apple Menu, and arrow down to System Preferences
2. Navigate to the Keyboard menu and select the Keyboard Shortcuts tab
3. Navigate to the "Shortcuts Categories" table and interact, then select
"Application Shortcuts" and stop interacting
4. Navigate to the "Add an application shortcut" button and press it (VO-Space)
5. In the dialog window, VO-Space on the "All Appliciations" pop up button and
set the application to "Skype".
6. Command-tab to switch to Skype in order to navigate to the menu bar, arrow
down to the command you want that ends in "ellipsis", and use VO-Shift-C to
copy the phrase to the clipboard; then press escape to dismiss the menu and
Command-tab back to your System Preferences dialog window.
7. Paste the menu command into the "Menu Title" text box with Command-V
8. Navigate to the Keyboard Shortcut text box and type in the shortcut
combination you want to use.
9. Press (VO-Space) the "Add" button to exit the dialog window.
10. Command-W to close the System Preferences window.

Incidentally, I found a reference to setting up a "Call with Skype" service at
this web page:
• “Call With Skype” Service for Mac OSX (September 6, 2011):
http://paulmaiorana.com/notes/2011/09/call-with-skype/

Haven't tried this, but from the description the author put together a Service
option using Automator so that he could highlight a phone number from any
application (e.g., a mail message, or a contact in your Address Book), select
"Call with Skype" as a Services menu option from that application's menu bar
services, and have that number dialed without having to paste it into the dial
pad. For Lion users, you don't need to use the command line of Terminal to put
the "Call with Skype" file into the ~/Library/Services/ folder. From FInder,
use the Command-Shift-G "Go to folder" shortcut, and then type or paste in:
~/Library/Services/
into the dialog window to navigate to this folder. You can also get the
freeware Tinker Tool application from:
http://www.bresink.com/osx/TinkerTool.html
This application lets you unhide your Services and Preferences libraries, and
configure other settings to your liking.

You should also be able to set up a Services menu shortcut similar to the
method outlined above for setting an Application shortcut. One of the nice
features of Services is that they show up in the menu options of all
applications. In most instances, your Service menu options won't appear until
you select some item for the Service to operate upon. For example, if I
wanted to save the instructions in this post as an audio track in iTunes, I
could select the text in this message, then navigate to the Services menu of my
current application, Mail, by using either VO-M or Control-F2 to move to the
menu bar, right arrow to the application, down arrow to its menu, press "s" to
move to "Services", then right arrow to the submenu to select "Add to iTunes
as Spoken Track". (In actuality, if I wanted to do this I would insert the
unspoken control characters for speeding up the speech rate at the beginning of
my selection. such as "rate 300" (without quotes) surrounded by a double set of
brackets like this:
[[rate 300]]
Then the audio track for the selection will be spoken at the specified rate
when saved as a spoken track in your music library.)

2012-02-13 Thread Brandon Olivares
Hi,

In Safari, I can press command+option+B to get the bookmarks. However, for some
reason, I only get the search field, and not the table itself listing the
bookmarks. Only the sidebar with the categories, and the search field, show up.

I've tried using the splitters. The horizontal splitter only says "collapsed"
inside of it, and it won't expand.

Has anyone else had this problem? What can I do about it?

Brandon

Re: Keyboard shortcuts

Hi,

open the app and find the menu item you want to make a shortcut for then, when
you've navigated to the option in the menu, press VO shift C to copy last
phrase to clipboard. Now you can set up your shortcut in preferences by
pasting the name of the item in the menu bar.

Hi,

I believe that Apple discourages connecting keyboards through USB
hubs. In the past, such a configuration could actually cause
significant erratic behaviour and sometimes other very undesirable OS
difficulties. This was years ago so it's possible that things have
changed but I would recommend that you always leave the keyboard
connected directly and use the USB hub for non-essential devices.

Re: Bookmarks in Safari Not Showing

2012-02-13 Thread Esther
Hi Brandon,

Scott Howell posted a solution for this a few weeks ago in response to a
question from Mary Otten. I'll paste it in below. I haven't encountered this
problem yet myself, but I would guess that it's specific to Safari 5.1 or Lion,
or the combination. Another thing that it occurs to me to try is quitting
Safari, then using Finder to go to the ~/Library/Preferences folder under your
account using the Command-Shift-G "Go to folder shortcut", and delete the
com.apple.Safari.plist file. Relaunching Safari should go back to the default
new configuration.

Scott's post:
Mary,

THis is a strange one, but here is the solution. SInce you already can get to
the table with the bookmarks etc. I won't cover that. So, once you have
selected the set of bookmarks from the table:
1. Navigate past the vertical splitter and the search field.
2. When you encounter the horizontal splitter interact with it and navigate to
the right. THe idea is to hear it say "Zero percent".

At this point Safari may go busy on you and my advice is to simply toggle VO
off/on and that should resolve the problem. Then you should be able to find the
table with the individual bookmarks. Unfortunately I have not found a way to
keep the table expanded, so you have to use this method until someone can
figure out how to fix the issue. :) Of course put a bug in Apple's ear at
accessibil...@apple.com, so they know this is really annoying.

Scott

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Problems with new extended keyboard

2012-02-13 Thread Chris Blouch
I don't have one of those but usually many of the F keys are mapped to
OSX behaviors so keys like F7 -F10 are mapped to back, play/pause,
forward and mute. On laptops there is a fn key which lets me really do
an F7 instead of the OSX function but I'm not sure if the big Apple USB
extended keyboard has this.

Re: Major Finder Problem Caused by Dropbox!

2012-02-13 Thread Steve Holmes
So assuming I have to get a way to fake out my Mac Mini in thinking
there is a monitor connected, is there any way to use Dropbox on this
box until I can find the necessary hardware? I find it amazing that
that app alone would cause the Finder to go into the mud and get
"busy" all the time no matter what folder I try and go into.
Reminder: as soon as I kill or disable dropbox from running, it gets
all good again.

Any other ideas?

VoiceOver and Braille support

2012-02-13 Thread chris hallsworth
I am quite impressed with how Braille works on an iOS device. According
to a Skype conference I just had, you can not only read what's on the
screen in grade 2 Braille; you can even type text in grade 2 Braille and
it translates very well. This is on a Focus 40 Blue and an iPhone 4s. I
think this might be a good combination since the Focus 40 Blue is the
cheapest Braille display that I know of with 40 cells, bluetooth and USB
connectivity and a perkins style keyboard.

Mastercard secure code and the Visa ones when paying on webpages

2012-02-13 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,
Is it possible to use the verified by Visa or Mastercard Secure Code security
systems on webpages? I'm having trouble using my mac on the Tesco.com groceries
website and can't get past the mastercard secure code page, I can't find the
edit box to put in the password and though I have it set to form elements it
doesn't find it, just trying to type in my code makes it return to the checkout
page. Of course, it could just be something up with the said page, but I'm
worried that it's a mac thing, how do we get around this? Loads of websites
have it, but I have to say, I haven't come across it til now.
Thanks.

Re: Recommendation for extended keyboard.

2012-02-13 Thread Brandon Misch
actually if you use chrome and go to samobile.net you can use system access's
features that way like movies and other things. also safari works good at
samobile.net but you can't watch any movies. don't think chatrooms work in
chrome though. Chrome support is experimental though so bugs may be found while
using that with samobile.net.

No, I don't have one. I purposely didn't buy one because I didn't
want to spend the money plus I really don't have the room for one on
my current setup. I had mentioned this in my previous messages,
hoping there might be a work-around I could use until I can find a VGA
addapter or something. Yeah, I was sort of hoping to keep the cost
down to make it easier to enter the Mac market without breaking the
bank and save space at the same time. I love the size of the Mini -
very small footprint. It just surprises me that the Dropbox app alone
would cause me all this trouble with the finder. Finder works great
when dropbox is not running.

Re: Recommendation for extended keyboard.

2012-02-13 Thread Frank Tom
Hello Esther and others,
My friend's problems has been solved. In frustration, I went to the Keyboard
preference pane, and there it was.

Check to use the function keys as standard functions keys.

The Apple extended, USB keyboard, has its function keys mapped to change
brightness, rewind, switch tracks, etc. You have to turn this "feature" off in
the keyboard preferences to make the keyboard act as a regular keyboard.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions on keyboards.

Hello,

I'm so close to pairing the on hand with my Mac book pro. Would someone be
able to send details on how to pair the two devices. I can find the on hand
and it seems to recognize it but then when I try to type in a password I'm
not sure what the final step is.

Thanks for any help.
