Re: Is there really not a Save As option in Text Edit?
Hi Donna, You might want to investigate into Apple Script. This can modify default behaviours for applications. You can introduce your own save as. This is a work around I know. But even better. You could create a template using apple script. activate the script fill in the bits you want. Save it as the naming convention you want. Learning apple script will take a bit. But is a perfect tool for these types of tasks. Using the right tool for the right job is a motto of mine. Sean On 05/01/2012, at 9:03 AM, Goodin, Donna wrote: > Unless, you're working on a template. solution to unzipping multipart files
Hi everyone, I found a solution, to the unzipping multipart files by trying stuffit from the app store, that an apple store person put me on to. when you find the file, you want to unzip, you, vo shift m on the file you want to unzip, then open with and use the choice stuffit and it anounces the decompressed file in folder form, after a few secs, there's a progress indicator too, and it seems to be accessible. I was told it only worked, with rar files but it, seems it works with most files. when installed click on the don't register button, and your good to go. Thanks everyone, and have a happy newyear where ever you are. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Hi Sean, Thanks for the suggestion. I've actually been wanting to learn to use Apple Script for a long time, but I just never seem to have time. Can you suggest any tutorials or podcast on learning to use it? TIA, Donna On Jan 5, 2012, at 5:58 AM, Sean Murphy wrote: > Hi Donna, > > You might want to investigate into Apple Script. Hi, I switched to mac in August. I was greatly surprised when VO read the PDF document I had to download for one of my classes. Hi I also use Zoomtext on my work PC. I have had my MBA for the past few months. In a lot of ways I love the machine however I also have had some issues. Firstly, how much zoom do you use? I will regularly jump up to around 30 times depending upon what I am doing. The max zoom on the Mac currently is 20 times. Add to this the minimal colour options. Normal or reverse video, no brightness inversion or other more advance colour management in the zoom option. I should say that there is also contrast control. I have also come across an extremely annoying bug when using VO with Zoom. You can't navigate the menu bar properly with the keyboard. It can be done with the track pad or by turning down the zoom level though. There are also a couple of keyboard shortcut conflicts between zoom and VO. . I have basically given up on using the Zoom component on the Mac. I will qualify this a bit as not to mislead. I didn't plan on using zoom that much and so bought an 11inch rather than the 13inch MBA. However I did get a connector to hook it up to my 32 inch TV and have probably only done this once or twice. You can tell by the fact that I often use the zoom at 30 times that my vision is on the low side of usable :) I am using JAWS with Zoomtext on the PC. I also have MAGic but prefer Zoomtext. I haven't had the stability issues you describe with Zoomtext. The thing I most love about my mac is the physical hardware it's self. I would often prefer to browse the web on my iPad. Good luck with your choice. omni group Mac applications
Hi all. I'm looking at some of the apps from the omni group specifically omniplan. This application is a project management tool very similar to MS Project. I'm interested in the field of project management and have used MS Project under windows during my Project Management course at college quite successfully. So, on to my question. Have any of you played with this application before? If so, is this application supposed to be accessible with VO? I've noticed a lot of un labeled buttons that have help tag information. The table however where data is to be arranged [sort of like a spreadsheet], appears to be empty to VO. Thanks for any feedback. amen. I fully agree. the trick of IT is getting the balance right. There are things windows can do that mac does differently and things that windows can't offer directly that mac does. each screen reader offers different levels of support and interoperability between OS and applications. For me, I've worked between windows, Mac OSS both old and X versions and linux. each OS and screen reader can offer different functionality. each has their strengths and weaknesses. Though I firmly stick to my mac and voiceover, I still have to work on occasions with windows. now more than ever with the use of adaptive hardware for system repairs and testing. so it's back to either jaws or window eyes or something like that to do what I need to do on a windows notebook. lol lew On 5 Jan 2012, at 15:29, Kawal Gucukoglu wrote: > I think its great that we can talk about our choices without getting hung > about who uses what. kindle keyboard
Hi Ricardo and others, I didn't get the whole information in your last thread. Did I get it right that the "kindle keyboard" is accessible for us blind users? It's a hardware or is it just a software? I found a book reader machine at Amazon but nothing in the Mac App Store. Once I tried the Kindl App but it was not accessible. So, what do you mean exactly by "kindle keyboard" And how accessible is it? What voice did they build in? Hello Listers, There was a topic about switching from Windows to the Mac. A related question I have is, what is the keyboard shortcut in Lion for moving to the top or bottom of a list. As in, you have a list of files and want to jump to either the beginning or end of that list. For that matter, how about navigating to the top or bottom of a Safari page. Thanks. Re: kindle keyboard
Kindle for pc with accessibility plug in and kindle keyboard both have some accessibility. If you are happy with being able to read books that have text to speech enabled, but don't care about reviewing line by line, spelling words or names, taking notes and knowing the context once you go back and look at the notes, and you are ok with shopping in the store on your pc or mac, not on the device itself, then Kindle keyboard will have some utility for you. Kindle for pc has the advantage that even books that don't have tts enabled will still work with the accessibility plug in. You must have a screen reader running at the same time, but the books are read by either the Samantha or Tom voices, as they are on Kindle Keyboard. There is absolutely no Kindle accessibility on the Mac or with VO, and the updates to the accessibility for both the keyboard device and the pc plug in have been nominal to nonexistent. Because Kindle store has stuff I can't find anywhere else, I have used both the kindle for pc with plug in and the Kindle Keyboard for straight reading of novels that can be done like you use to read a library of congress talking book tape or record. Just don't plan on efficient navigation or serious interaction with the text. Re: kindle keyboard
No, there are two different things here. Kindle with accessibility plug in is free software for your pc. Then there is the hardware device called Kindle Keyboard. It use to be just Kindle, but since they came out with the Fire and the other recent offerings, now they call this old one Kindle Keyboard, presumably because it has a physical keyboard. This is really off topic for this list to discuss the details of accessibility of non-Mac items. I will just say that both the accessible plug in application and the hardware device do keep your place in a book, so you can close the book and come back to it and pick up where you left off. The advantage of the pc app is that you can access even books whose publishers didn't allow text to speech to be enabled on the Kindle hardware devices. And it's free. So the best advice would be to install the free app with plug in which you get from the amazon.com site, check out the help guide, also found on amazon.com and try it out with a free book from the kindle store. You can move around to different pages in the pc application. You can not do so on the hardware device when the text to speech for reading a book is enabled. Google accessible kindle and you will find more in depth discussion of what it can and can't do. Re: kindle keyboard
Frankly I would like some additional information too. perhaps from you both. where is the information that the Kendal is deliberately not blind friendly? I might add that those with learning disabilities use speech as well, so this is not if correct intentionally not blind friendly, but not disability friendly. More to the point though, given I recall both the department of education and the department of justice got on Amazon's case about access since students use the Kendal for school, your description does not seem accessible at all, if other users can do this. how on earth can one use a novel for class or in my case a book for research if I cannot interact with the text, go by line or even word, take notes or anything else? many books do not have text to speech turned on, and I hear from those using it, those who do not experience a print challenge, that the text to speech leaves much to be desired where pronunciation's is concerned. so the pc edition lets you use your screen reader, but you still cannot well navigate as one might for a variety of reasons? nor can you download the book to the device either? Like amazon itself the Kendal store and format has far too much reach for this to be regarded as an accessible or acceptable idea at all. You could use for example tone indexing to navigate through nls materials, and rfb&D books now learning Ally, so a person who needs their text books in e-format, something other students can get, is at a major disadvantage. Are we both understanding the limits clearly though? Re: kindle keyboard
I'm going back about 10 years to when I started my degree in classical music where our college had libraries full of material but no blind friendly material. that left me completely at a loss. even DAISY formats didn't exist at the time. what frustrated me the most was not having spoken media. what was available was tape and that was pretty much useless. With the ipad, if that hd been around at the time, I reckon that would have made a huge life change for me. oh well... these things are sent to try us. lew On 5 Jan 2012, at 20:14, Karen Lewellen wrote: > Frankly I would like some additional information too. perhaps from you both. > where is the information that the Kendal is deliberately not blind friendly? > I might add that those with learning disabilities use speech as well, so > this is not if correct intentionally not blind friendly, but not disability > friendly. > More to the point though, given I recall both the department of education and > the department of justice got on Amazon's case about access since students > use the Kendal for school, your description does not seem accessible at all, > if other users can do this. > how on earth can one use a novel for class or in my case a book for research > if I cannot interact with the text, go by line or even word, take notes or > anything else? > many books do not have text to speech turned on, and I hear from those using > it, those who do not experience a print challenge, that the text to speech > leaves much to be desired where pronunciation's is concerned. > so the pc edition lets you use your screen reader, but you still cannot well > navigate as one might for a variety of reasons? > nor can you download the book to the device either? > Like amazon itself the Kendal store and format has far too much reach for > this to be regarded as an accessible or acceptable idea at all. > You could use for example tone indexing to navigate through nls materials, > and rfb&D books now learning Ally, so a person who needs their text books in > e-format, something other students can get, is at a major disadvantage. > Are we both understanding the limits clearly though? > Karen > > On Thu, 5 Jan 2012, Christine Grassman wrote: > >> so, if I understand you correctly, if I purchase a Kindle with the >> accessibility plug-in, using the keyboard to read is accessible: I can >> start, stop, pause, etc., without sighted assistance? I am using a mac since late 2010 and frankly have to say that i am not going to switch to a mac with vo, too many bugs and things that you cannot simply do with vo: advanced word processing, terrible braille support, tinefficient web browsing (many sites simply dont work with vo, and what about that busy bug in firefox? its making me crazy), lots of bugs in non english standard voices, inability to read the status bar in the main menu, and others. Re: Switching to a Mac from PC
OK can beat you on that. been using macs since 1995, stopped in 2001 for a while as outspoken was no longer supported or available so had to migrate to windows and learn a new screen reader interface (JAWS) Back with the mac since 2007 and glad to be back with it. >From an engineer's level, there are things voiceover gives me access to with >the right software which makes life easier. certain custom made solutions I >can't mention here. I am able to run advanced tests with voiceover and get >exactly what I want. yes, voiceover in lion is full of holes, I still use snow leopard and it does what I need it to do and that's the important thing. The same is said in windows, Hardware diagnostics and advanced repairs are conducted on a windows platform as certain software I need and certain hardware I use won't run on the mac. so that's not much of a problem. you just have to diversify and balance out when you use one OS against another. I've been in the IT game long enough, especially in advanced systems diagnostics, circuit repairs, etc to know when an OS can be a pain. but that's the way of life for blind users. I'm going to say this again... Though in this world, blind and V.I users are looked upon as a minority to sighted users by quite a percentage, we still have to rely on these systems for the work. simple as that. think back to the days of braille slates and perkins. simple, annoying but still doable old days. We rely too much on technology. Depending on your usability and practical experience with OS X, voiceover, etc you'll see, like I do, strengths and weaknesses. I've worked with lion on my mum's workstation and have found disturbing issues I'm working on in connection with apple and let's just say, I'm sticking with snow leopard on my macbook pro. Does what I want. lew On 5 Jan 2012, at 21:09, Luca wrote: > I am using a mac since late 2010 and frankly have to say that i am > not going to switch to a mac with vo, too many bugs and things that > you cannot simply do with vo: advanced word processing, terrible > braille support, tinefficient web browsing (many sites simply dont > work with vo, and what about that busy bug in firefox? its making me > crazy), lots of bugs in non english standard voices, inability to > read the status bar in the main menu, and others. > Tell me some things that you cant do in windows an can do with vo in > mac.. i i cant find any... > Mr. L. selling on Ebay?
Okay, Have any of y'all here sold anything on Ebay using Voice Over on the Mac? I just took a look at the simle seller form and found some issues. For one thing, you cannot work with what is labeled as a catigory combo box but must use the search catigory button to bring up the check boxes of catigory. Also, on the simple form, there appears to be poor labeling of the places where you need to select certain things about how to pay you and so on. I'm not now looking to sell anything, but, I did take a look just in case and wanted to hear back from other Mac users about their experiences. thanks. Sincerely, The Constantly Barefooted Ray!!! Re: Switching to a Mac from PC
Oh MegaDots. Lol that brings me back to the days when I used it from Grades 6-8 with Dos and the LiteTalk and the navigator for one year. I enjoyed those days. When it was put on my Windows 95 machine in Grade 9 with Jaws though, I missed how the LiteTalk would say everything. But anyway before I get in trouble for going off topic, I, too like how we don't bash people on here about what screen reader or OS we use. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you don't like how the Mac does what you want it to, then it's not for you and you may wanna go back to Windows. It's not a bad thing. There's a term that I heard in a podcast done by Serotek called the Blind Ghetto. I think most people that use a PC, not all of them, bash other people because the screen reader they use is better than the other person's, hence they live in the Blind Ghetto. But as Mac users we don't fall into that category so why bother starting something that doesn't need to be started? So I'm proud to be on this list because there isn't a lot of drama on here. Ray, I've got upwards of 300 transactions on ebay. Half selling & half buying. I did met of them on my Windows machine. But, since the switch about a year ago I haven't had any problems. Not sure if I'm just so familiar with the listing setup that I did most of it from memory &/or I was listing some of the same old stuff & didn't have to change much. In my case, guitars mostly. Re: status menu trick not working
Hello, Not that I'm aware of. I get absolutely no feedback with voiceover regarding whats underneath the mouse. This is the key element missing in Lion that was in SL. I have a little bit of sight, and have been trying to come up with some work arounds but, I've come up empty. As a Mac user, this might be its most frustrating short coming on a daily basis. It would make working with apps like skype, growl, boxcar, etc so much easier. Re: IRC client for the Mac?
Hello there, I personally use a command line / Terminal based app called Irssi. You will need Macports to install it. Irssi can be extensively scripted and you can do pretty much anything you want with it. From playing an mp3 when your name is called on a channel or sending text messages on your cellphone when you receive a PM, it can all be done if you know how to get around with the Perl language. Best practices to record audio in different scenarios
Hello listers, The flexibility of Mac OS audio components was a huge revelation when I made de switch from Windows XP. Similar utilities to Audio Hijack Pro or SoundFlower were never as reliable and performant on Windows. This does not come as a surprise now, does it… It was Microsoft after all. I am writing to hear more about your personal experiences and preferred ways of recording and editing audio on your Mac. Whether it's for music, podcasts, system audio recordings, streaming, editing and stuff. My favorite apps are Amadeus Pro, SoundFlower and Audio Hijack Pro. So I am curious to know what kind of set up you have and for what type of recordings. I regularly hear different audio inputs on podcasts, usually through Skype and sometimes through more high definition routes… So I am wondering if AHP is the sole and only path to recording Podcasts with remote participants, or is there something else out there I haven't heard of? Samples would be much appreciated. I do not have the discipline to animate a Podcast on a regular basis and therefore do not have one, but could probably find a few examples of fun recordings and edits I have performed with my Mac if you are interested. I look forward to reading your share of experiences and wish you all the best. Emrah -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group.
