GarageBand Questions

2011-11-29 Thread Gavin
Hi listers,

I have a few GarageBand questions I would like help with.

1. I've heard that, to remove the center channel of audio in GB, you can split
the audio to 2 tracks, then invert the phase of 1 and pan it until the center
channel is completely muted. Is this possible using VoiceOver? How?

2. When using loops, how do I paste multiple loops from the finder to 1 track?
I tried creating a loop song the other day, but I ended up with a 90 track
project that made my computer freeze when performing even the simplist actions.
I tried licking each track in the hope that I'd be able to free up some
resources, but that didn't seem to work. In fact, it only made things worse.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Regards,

Gavin

Re: Questions about sound check

2011-11-29 Thread Mr. L. Alexander
sound check to those unfamiliar is a level limiter for audio. as an example,
it's to protect users from excessive sound levels. it is available both in
itunes and most / all ipods. it's simply a matter of setting up in itunes
preferences sound check in playback settings. when setting up on the nano, do
the same in itunes but go to your device name in the main itunes window, like
you would the iphone.

First paragraph in this article also claims that triple-home turns on VO

Could it also be that the triple-home setting is changed to VO if you

Re: Looking for a monitor to connect to my mac mini

2011-11-29 Thread Chris Blouch
Lots of times thrift stores will have old ones that work well enough.
They don't even need to turn on really because the sense pins are just
resistors connecting certain ones together. They used to sell "vga
terminators" but every site I found either discontinued them or they
were permanently out of stock. Another option I've documented before was
to get a VGA to NTSC/PAL adapter. It will appear to be a VGA monitor to
your Mac whether you hook it up to a TV or not. I got one from here for
about $27 plus shipping:

Re: Burning Itunes purchases to CD?

2011-11-29 Thread Ricardo Walker
I don't think that 's much of a rumor. Its just the way things are going.
Just like the 3.5 inch floppy. The Macbook air has gotten rid of the optical
drive and I'm sure you will see more of this in the next 2 to 3 years. A lot
of stereos are coming with 1 CD slot, AM FM radio, maybe HD radio, and a iPod
dock and USB. Remember just 10 years ago when many stereos had at least 3 or 5
CD slots?

Re: Questions about sound check

2011-11-29 Thread Ricardo Walker
Sound check is terrible in my opinion. It does nothing but lower the volume of
all your music. If that is the purpose its meant to serve then its doing a
great job.

Re: Questions about sound check

2011-11-29 Thread Mr. L. Alexander
that's exactly the job of this function.

in studio terms, it's a combination of a normaliser and mixdown regulator.

this basically protects your ears from excessive sound pressure, as well as the
hardware.

we've all grown up with the concept of cranking up hifis to hear what we want,
but with this, due to laws of sound, turning up the volume doesn't mean better
sound quality. just higher volumes. hence this feature.

Re: GarageBand Questions

2011-11-29 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

for the loops, just paste the loop once into your project. every time you
paste, it adds a new track as you found out the hard way. :). After you have
imported the loop, just loop it instead of pasting. To do this interact with
arrange layout, time group and the name of the loop you've pasted or, if you
have multiple tracks or regions already, interact with instruments then the
region. There you will find the loop handle. Interact and press VO right
arrow to extend the loop the amount of bars you desire.

You should go to www.mobileaccess.org and type garageband into the search
field. Then you will see all the audio tutorials I did for Garageband.

RE: Questions about sound check

2011-11-29 Thread Missy Hoppe
I've disabled sound check on my macbook, but the volume of a movie I purchased
on itunes is still very, very low.
Fortunately, it wasn't that expensive, but if I can't figure out how to get
movies or tv shows to play at the same volume as
music, I'll never buy another 1. I have my bose mediamates turned up almost all
the way, and can still barely hear the movie.
I've rented this movie on DVD in the past, and don't remember it having low
sound, so am not sure what's going on. It's just
very disappointing. Would there be a way to rip the movie to a DVD and play it
on my home theater? Maybe that would solve the
problem.
Thanks, and sorry if this changes the topic, but I was hoping that sound check
was the problem, and that doesn't seem to be
the case.

Re: Questions about sound check

2011-11-29 Thread Mr. L. Alexander
If sound check has been disabled, your system volume is at a reasonable volume
and your itunes volume is at top, there is the chance like some instances that
the mastering of the film has used a different mixing config. this means that
the volume does not match the normal setting we are all used to.

take as an example a DVD. each DVD is mastered differently, using different
mixing consoles, production hardware and software, so in turn, the overall
sound mix is different each time, unless the studio engineer has a default
setup in automation.

oh well.

now to strangle windows XP. Don't ask why I'm even touching this filthy
software DING!

Re: Sorry but I gotta ask again | VMWare Key Mapping

2011-11-29 Thread Esther
Hi Kevin,

There are two programs that I know are used for remapping your keyboard for
VMWare running Windows. The one you'll most frequently hear recommended is
SharpKeys by RandyRants:
http://www.randyrants.com/sharpkeys/
This program is basically a Windows registry hack that lets you remap keys from
two lists. The other program is called KeyRemap4MacBook:
http://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook/
Erik Burggraaf posted about this over a year ago, but under a confusing subject
line about the Mac number pad. This program will let you remap keys both for
use on the Mac, as well as define key remappings on a per application basis,
such as for VMWare Fusion. You can read about it in this TUAW article from two
years ago:

Both of these are either freeware, or with a suggestion that you donate if you
find the program useful. You can probably get more detailed information from
other list members, since I don't use VMWare Fusion to run Windows myself.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

RE: Sorry but I gotta ask again | VMWare Key Mapping

2011-11-29 Thread Daniel Miller
Hi,

Can someone that used jaws under vmware write me off list and explain how
I'd map a key to function as the jaws key? I hate not having my full set of
jaws commands simply because there's no key that will function as that
particular one.

Any help would be greatly apriciated.

with the use of keymapping for fusion... does this effectively mean that the
shortcuts I use on the mac can be echoed to windows instead of working out
windows shortcuts?

if so... I'm in lol

This program is basically a Windows registry hack that lets you remap keys
from two lists. The other program is called KeyRemap4MacBook:
http://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook/
Erik Burggraaf posted about this over a year ago, but under a confusing
subject line about the Mac number pad. This program will let you remap keys
both for use on the Mac, as well as define key remappings on a per
application basis, such as for VMWare Fusion. You can read about it in this
TUAW article from two years ago:

Both of these are either freeware, or with a suggestion that you donate if
you find the program useful. You can probably get more detailed information

RE: Questions about sound check

2011-11-29 Thread Missy Hoppe
You know, I'm having trouble proving it for sure, but I think it's very similar
to the problem with midi playback. I opened
the movie in itunes using my drive that still runs snow leopard, and it seems
that it's ever-so-slightly easier to hear. I'm
not entirely definite, but if that is the case, Apple really, really needs to
take a look at whatever equalizer/limiter
software they're using, because under lion, it truly sucks! I'm off to try to
watch this movie, but I'm still not impressed
enough with the quality that I'll be in a hurry to buy any more movies from
Itunes.

Re: Sorry but I gotta ask again | VMWare Key Mapping

2011-11-29 Thread Esther
Hi Lew,

Someone who uses Windows in Fusion should answer this for you, but I think your
question is not being posed precisely. Fusion itself will let you redefine
keyboard shortcuts to be used in different virtual machines, which need not just
be Windows, if you use it to run Linux or different versions of an operating
system. But the two programs I listed give you more flexibility.

When you type keyboard shortcuts on the Mac, there's a possible issue about
precedence with shortcuts defined on the Mac. For example, Command-Tab cycles
between active applications on the Mac, so if you implemented that instead of
Alt-Tab under Windows, the net result could be to dump you out of virtual
machine into another Mac app. Similarly, there can be conflicts with
predefined keys like F10, etc. which by default are defined as the Exposé keys
on the Mac, unless you turn these definitions off under settings, which I
always do, since there are accessibility issues if you press these by mistake
that can be very confusing to a user.

So KeyRemap4MacBook will let you redefine keys used for VMWare Fusion, but it
still requires some thought before you randomly apply these. Also, my
understanding is that you should not try to remap the Insert key for JAWS to
the CapsLock key. One of the reasons is that some time ago Apple inserted a
delay for the application of the Caps Lock key on Intel Macs to reduce
accidental activation. (This may be an issue for some individuals with motion
disabilities.) You can read more about it under this Knowledge Base article:
• Intel-based Apple Portables: Caps Lock modified to reduce accidental
activation:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1192
This is also in effect for other Apple Keyboards used with desktop Macs:
• Keyboard Caps Lock modified to reduce accidental activation:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1578

HTH. I don't use Windows or JAWS under VMWare Fusion, so maybe someone who
does can provide better answers.

Cheers,

Esther

cheers for that.

I think then, just in case for windows based repairs to systems, I may as well
carry both a windows notebook and my mac. OK it's a bit more weight to carry
but hey.

Re: Questions about sound check

2011-11-29 Thread Chris Blouch
So I wonder what iTunes does with the center channel on a stereo system.
I usually run my Mac Mini's audio output via optical cable to my home
stereo. I usually only have left/right speakers since the kids play with
the other ones so on the stereo I have to turn off the missing speakers,
including the center channel. One time I had Center turned on even
though there was no speaker and wondered where the dialog went. Had to
turn things way up just to hear it because it was just the bleedthrough
on the left/right. So if iTunes is dropping the center channel rather
than mixing it with the left/right that could explain it.

Maybe that would solve the
problem.
Thanks, and sorry if this changes the topic, but I was hoping that sound check
was the problem, and that doesn't seem to be
the case.

Re: Burning Itunes purchases to CD?

2011-11-29 Thread Chris Blouch
Last stats I found said online music purchases were to surpass CD
puchases for the first time this year ($2.8B online v. $2.7B for CDs)
and that shift has been happening for a few years now. While I like
having a backup (or an original) CD on the shelf, it's hard to beat the
instant gratification of purchasing some music online and listening to
it in a matter of seconds. Plus the preview feature is hard to replicate
with physical media.

Just like the 3.5 inch floppy. The Macbook air has gotten rid of the optical

of stereos are coming with 1 CD slot, AM FM radio, maybe HD radio, and a iPod
dock and USB. Remember just 10 years ago when many stereos had at least 3 or 5
CD slots?

I couldn't agree more with this statement. I've just heard rumors that physical
media is going away fairly soon, so am trying
to prepare myself a little bit at a time. Naturally, as long as CDs exist, I'll
buy them, especially for artists I already
own CDs for, but for less important stuff, I don't mind just having it
digitally. Thanks for the suggestions on how to back

RE: Questions about sound check

2011-11-29 Thread Missy Hoppe
That explanation makes a lot of sense; I remember this movie being very
surround sound intensive, so I'm almost definite it's
trying to play surround sound through 2 channels, which is why I can't hear
anything. Unfortunately, I have no means of
hooking the macbook up to the home theater. Is there a way to force 2 channel
audio, or better yet, can I burn the movie to a
DVD and watch it that way?
Thanks!

Re: GarageBand Questions

Hi Ricardo,

Thanks for the tip on extending loops. The reason I originally asked
the question was because the song I'm trying to create consists of
several different loops, one after the other. I'd like to then take
tha multi-looped section and repeat the whole thing a certain number
of times. I planned to put all the bass on 1 track, all the piano on 1
track, all the drums on 1 track, and so on. Perhaps what I want to do
would be better explained if I sent you the file. Is there a way I can
get it to you?

Re: Burning Itunes purchases to CD?

2011-11-29 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

This isn't exactly true. that purchases online will pass CD purchases.
Online sales has already surpassed CD sales for a year or 2. Its more that the
revenue from online sales will surpass that of CD sales. You must also keep in
mind the price of a CD over the years. I remember in the 1990s, it was common
place to get a new album for $16, $17, or $18 before tax. These prices have
gone down tremendously to entice people to pick up CDs. That accounts for much
of the lost revenue from this media format. Its hard to over inflat your
prices when people can just get the album at home, with no physical media for
like $10. And if they want, just by a song for for a dollar or a little more.

interact with arrange layout, time group and the name of the loop you've

Just like the 3.5 inch floppy. The Macbook air has gotten rid of the
optical drive and I'm sure you will see more of this in the next 2 to 3
years. A lot of stereos are coming with 1 CD slot, AM FM radio, maybe HD
radio, and a iPod dock and USB. Remember just 10 years ago when many
stereos had at least 3 or 5 CD slots?

Thanks all,

I'll have to play with this sound check further. I'm looking forward to see
how it is handled with the Nano docked. Lol, it sucked with a headset,
ohMyGall, my ear still hurts from the sudden burst of volume on a particular

Growl Notifications readout

2011-11-29 Thread Traci
Those of you that use growl, how do you have voiceover set up to handle the
system dialogues that pop up?

It annoys me how every time growl notifies me, I'm pulled from my current
application, and then I have no idea what I'm being notified about.

Am I missing some setting here?

Thanks,

interesting bug in voiceover with numbers and apostrophes

2011-11-29 Thread Paul Erkens
Dear listers,
Before I start bugging Apple with what I think is a bug, I would like to ask
you listers about the following. I found the bug while working in Amadeus pro.
In this sound editor, for some reason, you have to enter time in a strange way.
Let's say I have a file open that is 30 minutes long, but I would like to jump
right to 10 minutes, 3 seconds and half a second more. So 10 minutes, 3 seconds
and 500 milliseconds. In Amadeus pro, I have to enter this, using apostrophes
as time separators, and 2 apostrophes to separate the seconds from the
milliseconds. Does this sound weird? I don't know why amadeus wants me to use 2
apostrophes in a row, even though that works fine if you obey, although this is
not important for this voiceover bug, but here I found something strange happen
with voiceover.
Here's the test. For ten minutes 3 seconds and 500 milliseconds, here's what I
type in inside amadeus pro. I'll type it literally, so let's see what your
voiceover says here.
10'3''500
With my current voiceover punctuation set to some, I hear:
ten, thirty nine one one five hundred. This is strange, because what I type was:
1 0 apostrophe 3 apostrophe apostrophe 5 0 0.
What the heck is happening here with voiceover? Where does that thirty nine
come from? I didn't type it, but if you omit the last apostrophe, so that the 3
seconds are now only separated from the milliseconds by just one apostrophe,
then everything speaks just fine. In other words, try typing this.
one zero apostrophe 3 apostrophe 5 0 0
If you do this, then you hear what is on the screen. With 2 apostrophes in a
row though, voiceover screws up. Can anyone confirm this?
10'3'500 against 10'3''500.
Isn't that interesting? Hmm.

To add to this: I remember reading somewhere, that if set up a new iphone with

am I wrong or does growel now cost $1.99? where can one get this from? I tried

Re: Burning Itunes purchases to CD?

2011-11-29 Thread Chris Blouch
Agreed. You would think the profit margin from downloading a $10 album
would be greater than CDs after the cost of duplication, shipping and
store frontage/reselling is accounted for. What has changed is the
labels can't stuff a bunch of junk on an album which you bought for the
two 'good songs'. If the do you'll give them the $2 it's worth by just
buying those two tracks. I think they also benefited from the media
conversions as folks migrated from LPs to tapes to CDs. That migration
over time generated a lot of revenue, which has pretty much dried up at
this point. I remember dubbing LPs to casette and later re-buying some
of those LPs on CD. At this point the quality is 'good enough' that most
will never upgrade again. As has been pointed out on this list before,
imperical studies found that more people chose the mp3 version of a
track over the uncompressed version so something about that codec makes
your iTunes library more appealing to listen to. The other great thing
is portability. I used to carry a good sized "wallet" of CDs around and
a portable CD player etc. which is now replaced by an iPhone. The
iPhones now have enough capacity that most people just dump their whole
library or, at a minimum, don't have to whittle the list down much. With
more ubiquitous wireless access, even that need will go away over time.
Why store it all when I can just play anything via the internet on
demand. I'm not sold on that yet as I still like the idea of 'ownership'
of my media. I still have the first Rush Moving Pictures CD I bough back
in the early 80s.

I couldn't agree more with this statement. I've just heard rumors that physical

to prepare myself a little bit at a time. Naturally, as long as CDs exist, I'll

Re: Growl Notifications readout

Yup, Growl has decided to start charging. I questioned this because some
apps avoid implementing accessible notification by just pointing folks
to Growl. While not expensive, it does mean that VO users will have to
shell out and set up more to gain the same access. I has asked for
comments on this but apparently it bothered me more than most others :)

Re: Looking for a monitor to connect to my mac mini

2011-11-29 Thread Chris Blouch
So you'll need two adapters. One is the HDMI or DVI to VGA and the
second is the VGA to NTSC box to trick your Mac into thinking there is a
monitor hooked up.

Nope. Not accessible at all. This is the same problem with Firefox. The
Mozilla folks support the open Iaccessible2 API which is not implemented
on OSX. Apple already has a perfectly dandy accessibility API but
Mozilla has no intention of supporting a second platform-specific API
since iAccessible2 works on both Windows and Linux. So the standoff
leaves all Mozilla apps unusable on OSX for now. Different story on
Windows as FF with IAccessible2 and NVDA or Jaws is somewhat the gold
standard for good web accessibility support such as ARIA.

Little Mac Victories

2011-11-29 Thread Traci
Hope y'all don't mind me sharing such an email…

I was on a music site I like to buy from, from time to time. I went there on
my Mac and hesitated, thinking I should wait to hop onto my windows. *Grin,* I
decided to give it a whirl on my Mac.

Looky there! There was a bit of struggle navigating the website, but for the
most part it was a more pleasant experience than on my windows machine. I was
tickled to search for a track, log in, and purchase said track.

The song is now nicely inside iTunes, inside a playlist. :) Loving it!

Re: YoruFukurou and lists.

2011-11-29 Thread Ricardo Walker
You know, lists of people you follow but keep separate from your main timeline?
For example, one might creat a list for sports and just add the athletes they
care to follow on twitter?

safari refuses to launch.

2011-11-29 Thread Jessica
I've just recently tried to launch safari, only to have voiceover tell me
"open," like it normally does when I perform the "open," command, only it just
sits there and refuses to do anything. I've tried to launch other aps, and
they've opened perfectly fine, so don't understand what the problem is, and
have restarted the computer, and nothing has helped.

where to start i I want to automate terminal commands

2011-11-29 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Hi all,

I would love to create a script or what ever that I can call up to perform a
series of terminal commands. I had a look at the automator and found a record
option to type in all the steps. I performed the actions but when I tried to
run the action got an error. I suspect that the key sequence goes to fast since
it is saying that terminal is not running when it was expected to.
Any ideas how to do this or where to look for prewritten scripts I can modify?
Is the script editor a better option than automator?

I have no formal scripting experience but have read and written jaws scripts
using their manual but really nothing fancy.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: Voice Over acting Odd

2011-11-29 Thread Rachel Magario
I can think of 3 things.
1. check if you running low in your hard drive space.
If I get less than 50 Gb of hard drive my VO gets slow because I use loads of
applications running at once.
2. turn your activity monitor on and ask somebody to check who is taking the
most of your ram when vo gets quiet.
3. this must be really far off, but once I had so many attachments that when I
turned my mail on my vo got really slow. I had to clean like 20 gb of
attachments on my mail, but you are probably not data horder like me. But just
in case.

Hello Hank. If you have Google Chrome installed and have added the Google

Press the Google Chrome key (control+option)+h which puts you in chrome help.

 Hi,

If you have your devices syncing through iCloud, as you fix them on the
iPhone, they will fix the related items within iCloud. Similarly, if you
fix these items on your Mac in AddressBook, they will automatically be
 fixed
on your iPhone. You can confirm this by going to the other device and
checking it. That is, if you did the corrections on the iPhone,, just go
 to
your Mac and take a look in AddressBook and the same items should also be
fixed there. Again, this only is relevant if you have the same iCloud
account on both devices and you have Contact syncing turned on.

 HTH.
