Turning Off Auto Complete In Safari's Address Bar

2011-11-12 Thread Gavin
Hi guys,

How do I disable the auto complete in Safari's address bar in Lion? It really
annoys me.

Regards,

Gavin

Dragon Express Introductory pricing

2011-11-12 Thread Garth Humphreys
HI

I noticed that Dragon Dictate has an express version in the app store at the
moment for the introductory pricing of about $50. Does anyone know how well
this works or if it is compatible with VO?

2011-11-12 Thread Red.Falcon
Hi Gavin!
If you go to safari pref's [command+comma] interact with the tool bar and
select the auto fill button there is a check box for both options!
Try unchecking either both or the one that is!

Re: Facebook

2011-11-12 Thread David Eagle
I would suggest writing to Facebook but that's a whole challenge in itself. I
know a lot of blind people who use the mobile Facebook site on their computers,
so this is really going to frustrate a lot of people. I wonder if Facebook do
it on purpose. Perhaps that will be in the sequel to that film all about the
making of Facebook. We'll discover in the next film that the founder of
Facebook once asked a blind girl out at school, only to be rebuffed. He then
came home to find that his parents had been murdered by an evil blind man. From
that day on, he swore that he would get revenge and make a social networking
site that was deliberately as inaccessible for blind people as possible.
Goodness knows why they didn't put this in the film; it was a bit of an
oversight, but that's just typical hollywood.

What is so frustrating about this is that the mobile site was so accessible.
They're also doing image statuses now as well, so blind people can't see
people's statuses because they're not always text.

There must be a way that you can force Facebook to open the mobile site on your
computer. Perhaps a Google search will yield something positive.

iPhone update

2011-11-12 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi guys.
I did an update to my iPhone last night directly to the iPhone. I had a problem
I need to tell you guys about, and I need to contact Apple about this also. My
sighted husband had already gotten his update to work, so I started mine. My
phone was happy to download the program, no problem. But when it came time to
install it, I got an error. My husband had the idea to turn VoiceOver off. That
worked.

However, you can't just turn VoiceO ver off and it goes on its merry way. He
had to go to settings and then start things again. This means that those of us
with no vision can't do our own update. directly to the iPhone. I was concerned
that the new update would kill VoiceOver because of that, but it came back ok.
So, those of you with no vision and no sighted friends around at the time you
want to do your update might want to use iTunes instead.

Regards,
Gigi

Hi,

That's not true at all. There are several people on this list that have
reported their updates on the phone itself going fine with VoiceOver on,
including mine.
I don't know what kind of error you got, but a lot of us at least on the
ViPhone list updated successfully.

Re: Facebook

2011-11-12 Thread David Eagle
Hi, it says in the address bar (or whatever it's called on the Mac) that it's
the mobile site, but it quite clearly isn't. Instead of getting things like
notifications, messages etc we now get the stupid numbers at the top that don't
announce themselves as links and don't tell you what they actually are. the
first one appears to bee friend requests, so I discovered when clicking on it.
I am in the UK and it's definitely not showing what used to be the mobile site,
unless they've changed that too. I can't tell you when it changed because I
don't really use Facebook, so this is the first time I've been on it for a
while.

Re: Search in Apple Mail

2011-11-12 Thread David Eagle
Hi, I'm on about using the search facility in Apple Mail. You press command
Option F, type your query and then scroll down for results. I find the message
I want but then can't read it. I know how to read messages ordinarily with
Apple Mail, which hopefully I have demonstrated by reading your message and
replying to it. It's just the search feature which doesn't seem useable.

Thanks

Re: attaching songs to emails

2011-11-12 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Forst, that depends on how large of a file your e-mail server can take. I
would be hesitant to try anything over 15Mb. Usually, though, it's actually
more like 10. I'd prefer to use either Drop Box or some third party server to
do that since the files can be much larger than 15Mb.

Let's say, though, that you have a file small enough and you know your e-mail
server can handle it.

There are a number of ways to attach it to your message.

1. Navigate to the file and, from the finder menu, select services. Now,
choose "attachment to new e-mail message" What will happen is that mail will
open with a new message created and your file already attached. You just need
to fill in the headers appropriately.

2. Navigate to the file and then press command+c to copy it. then, open mail
and make a new message, filling in the headers like always. Then, in the body
of the message, press command+v to paste the file. Then send.

Hey; in recent posts its just been apple users with problems. could
we hear from some windows users about their experiences. I do wish

be in the sequel to that film all about the making of Facebook.
We'll discover in the next film that the founder of Facebook once

What is so frustrating about this is that the mobile site was so

Re: iPhone update

2011-11-12 Thread John Panarese
OK, I had a similar situation as Gigi, but it didn't seem to have anything
to do with VoiceOver. The download on my 4S went fine, but I received an error
message when it started the process to update. However, I just went back into
settings and selected the update button in the software update setting. That
restarted the update process and it went fine with VoiceOver still turned on.

Re: Search in Apple Mail

Once you have a search result, stop interacting with the search area and find
your way to the messages column. Interact with that, and you will find the
search results listed as usual.

Re: iPhone update

2011-11-12 Thread Scott Howell
I have no idea what happen in your case, but I updated two iPhones (4S), an
iPad 2, and two first generation iPads with no issues. I updated my iPhone and
my sighted wife's iPHone using VoiceOver and the iPad 2, and first gen iPad.
THe second first gen iPad was done without VoiceOver. In every case the entire
process went without a hitch.
So, I anticipate that most users will not have a problem.

Help with audible, please?

2011-11-12 Thread Wendy Alling

Hello all,

Can someone give me some help with the audible app? I have it installed on
my phone but can't find where to purchase a book using the app on the phone.
I have an account but don't have a plan set up. Could that be the problem?
Any tips would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Re: iPhone update

2011-11-12 Thread James Mannion
I did an update directly to the phone with an IPhone 4 and a 4s and
they both went fine with voiceover on. I suspect in your case it was
an error just like what has and will likely still happen in some cases
when doing it on ITunes. Likely what this tells us is that the over
the air update process has not eliminated the random errors that have
always occurred in updating. The only thing I noticed in both cases
was on the screen where you have to activate the I Agree button, when
that screen first came up, Voiceover did not see anything on the
screen for a few seconds during which time it acted like there was
nothing available or it couldn't read it. I think it also went silent
for a few seconds. Worried me the first time.

Re: Help with audible, please?

2011-11-12 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

on the bottom of the app there should be a more books tab. I think this will
tell you to visit the audible sit on your device and might give you a link. I
can't remember. Any which way, go to safari and go to the audible site. Sign
in and by the books you want. Then go back into your audible app and download
the purchased books from your audible library.

I had a loss of speech issue.
my 4s was plugged into the wall. I hit the sleep button and a while later my

And when I tried to turn vo on, nothing.
I restarted it and nothing.
I plugged it in and nothing.
it was recognized.
I restored it to an earlier backup and vo came on.
I'm guessing the update isn't an automatic thing?
that there's a pop up?

Re: Any accessible amateur astronomy app

2011-11-12 Thread Esther
Hi Subbu,

For some reason your original post requesting accessible amateur astronomy apps
for the iPhone still hasn't shown up in my Inbox, although I've read Anna's
reply, where she mentions both the NASA app and SkySafari Lite. I'm cc'ing a
copy of this response to the Macvisionaries list, so I can find it easily again
with their archive search facility. I'll point you to my detailed post
describing SkySafari Lite's use with VoiceOver in the Macvisionaries secondary
Mail Archive. The current version of this basic app is named SkySafari 3,
following a major version update in May. (And I'll also mention for Mac
computer users that there are also versions of SkySafari for Mac OS X available
in the Mac App Store.)

SkySafari 3 comes with a catalog of 120,000 stars, and 220 of the best known
nebulae, galaxies, and star clusters. There's also extensive background
information about these targets from space missions and Hubble Space Telescope
in the form of descriptive articles. The app is also available in the
SkySafari 3 Plus and SkySafari 3 Pro versions. Basically, most of this app is
directly accessible with VoiceOver, and the only part that you really can't use
are the map representations displaying star charts on the screen -- the catalog
information is all fine. The articles contain embedded images that expand to
enlarged views if double tapped. You'll be able to identify these by the link
image names, but if you double tap one of these by mistake, just double tap
again in the center of your screen to leave the expanded image view and return
to the article and your regular navigation. Here's the link to the earlier
post giving a more detailed exploration of the app:
iOS Astronomy Apps [was Re: Sun and Moon position?]
http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg44355.html

The Developer is Southern Stars, and their web site is:
http://www.southernstars.com/
If you are a dedicated amateur astronomer, you will probably want the SkySafari
3 Plus version, which has a more extended catalog of stars, galaxies,
asteroids, and solar system objects, and which can even performed wired or
wireless control of telescopes through an additional adapter that can be
purchased and plugged into the dock connector at the base of your iPhone, iPod
Touch, or iPad. (Check the developer's web site for details about the supported
telescope models.) This means that size of the app is also larger -- regular
version is about 52 MB, but the Plus version with a catalog of 2.5 million
stars and 31,000 deep space objects is about 180 MB, and the Pro version with
15.3 million stars, 740,000 galaxies, over 550,000 solar system objects
including every comet ever discovered, takes up nearly half a GB, which is
almost as much space as some GPS apps.

Personally, I would wait 5 days and check whether they drop the app prices for
the occasion of the Leonid meteor shower (November 17, 2011). They often
discount the three app versions for specific events, and the basic app that
lists for $2.99 may even go free at that time.

A couple of other free apps to check:
* Variable Stars (free) by Diatom Software LLC
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/variable-stars/id405791918?mt=8
• AstroClock (free) by Diatom Software LLC
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/astroclock/id408289011?mt=8

Variable Stars is a mobile catalog of over 183,000 variable star positions and
information about their properties. Embedded images for articles only have the
name descriptions, so pictures and plots won't be usable, but all the tabular
data and basic catalogs, along with most article content, are all accessible
with VoiceOver -- that's most of the app.

AstroClock is a clock tool for Amateur astronomers. It continuously updates
fields for local time, Greenwich Mean Time, Local Sidereal Time, and Julian
Date, so in order to read these entries with VoiceOver, you want to move your
finger up from the Home button and double tap the "Pause" button near the
bottom of the screen before flicking to the time entries. You can also access
this button by doing a four finger tap at the bottom of the screen to move to
the last element (this is the button for "Settings" in the bottom right corner
of the screen -- VoiceOver announces this as "Gear, button"), and then flick
left to the date, and then flick left again to the "Pause" button. I find it
easiest to just move my finger up from the "Home" button at the bottom until I
hear "Pause, button" and double tap. Then you can do a two-finger flick up to
read all the time fields. The "Pause" button turns into a "Resume" button once
double tapped, so just double tap this again if you want to start time running
again, and double tap the "Pause, button" when you want to stop things to read
off the time.

Here are the links to the SkySafari 3 apps in the regular, plus, and pro
versions, along with current prices:

Janny,

I just created a shortcut to open mail for me in the voice over utilities
under key board commanders.
I chose the right option key to be my commander and I just do option m and that
opens my mail, but you can choose whatever key you want. I thought this way it
is super fast and I do only one short cut key instead of going to doc or to
spot light search, although those are valid ways that I use for other

Preparing for clean lion install

2011-11-12 Thread Missy Hoppe
Good evening, all. I'm highly skeptical that this is going to do any good, but
just because I want to say I've made the
effort, I'm getting ready to do a clean install of lion. While I'm doing all my
prep work: cloning to external drives to make
sure I don't lose anything, I'm going to listen to Mike's podcast on Lion. I
just wanted to write to the group, though,
because I'm curious how I'll go about putting back apps. Can I restore them
from the cloned drives, or do I have to actually
reinstall things? More than anything else, I'm concerned about the Acapella
voices I purchased to use with my mac, but
wouldn't mind tips about adium, skype and things of that nature. Also, how do I
back up my Itunes purchases. Granted, I've
only made two of them, but I don't want to lose them. What about Growl and
Yorufukuru? Will I just get those from the app
store again?
I've got 2 external drives handy, so I'm backing up not only my current lion
install, but also my perfect and up-to-date SL
install. That way, if the clean install still isn't satisfactory, I can put
everything back the way it was.
Any advice will be extremely appreciated. I just keep reminding myself that
there's no way I can possibly render the mac
entirely useless, but I don't want to lose any apps, especially not ones that
cost money. So, if anyone has any instructions
to share, I would be extremely greatful. Also, once I use my CD, will lion be
able to update itself to 7.2?
OK. Sorry for the rambling, disjointed message. I just am trying this to give
Lion another chance to get into my good graces.
Thank you all very much for your time, and I hope that everyone is having a
great day!
Missy

Hi Everyone!

Wow! What a goldmine in the Macvisionaries archives! I have a question of my
own about the I Pod touch and the I Pad 2.

This may be a silly question but, can you do everything on the I pod that you
can do on the I Pad? If not, what are some major differences between ;the two?

A question about Dropbox and Flash-player

2011-11-12 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi,
I thought I had successfully installed dropbox, but when I open it, there is
nothing in it. When I installed, I did tell it I had an account, so I expected
to find all my files but they are not there. They are on the website. What do I
have to do to get them in my dropbox on the Mac?

I needed to download flash player to read a magazine I bought, but I can't get
it to work. It's installed fine. Am I to take it that flash player isn't
accessible with VO on the Mac?
Thanks.
Kirsten, the slow-to-learn-Mac-User :)

Re: rosetta stonesand voiceover?

2011-11-12 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Karen,

I am also a French language learner. I was told by several language
teachers that the Risetta Stone program was very visual. I suspect it is not
going to be a good tool for a blind language learner. I found the Pimsler
program worked well as it is all audio. Also The Michel Thomas Language
learning materials worked very well. I placed these materials on my iPhone as
audio books and they worked very well. I also used them in iTunes and on other
book readers.
If you want to discuss language resources off list feel free to contact
me. Also, if I'm wrong and Rosetta Stone works for you on the Mac I'd love to
know. I'm always looking for more resources.
If you have not done so you will also find in the iTunes store several
good podcasts for French learning. Again I can make recommendations if wanted.

Re: How do I get to mail from the doc quickly

2011-11-12 Thread Johnny Angel!
Hi Jenny,

Just quickly type the first two or three letters for the program you wish to
navigate to.

Hopstop website frustratingly inaccessible with VO

2011-11-12 Thread Eric Brinkman
I just went to hops top.com to plan a NYC trip, but found that I was
unable to adjust the transportation method preferences when entering
information. Adjusting the time of departure was also unnecessarily
difficult as I had to mouse-click randomly to get it to select the
time I wanted. I eventually ended up using the iPhone app which
worked fine, but I continue to be frustrated by sites like this,
OKCupid and Facebook on the Mac. Has anyone used Hopstop on the Mac?
I'd be very grateful for any suggestions you could offer.

Eric

Re: A question about Dropbox and Flash-player

2011-11-12 Thread Chris Blouch
I can at least answer the second question. Yes, Adobe has chosen to not
make Flash accessible on the Mac. Not much we can do about it other than
continue to pester Adobe, but success seems unlikely.

Hi,
I thought I had successfully installed dropbox, but when I open it, there is
nothing in it.

Thanks.

Re: Facebook

2011-11-12 Thread Rahul Bajaj
David,

Your suggestion about that movie was too hilarious :P
On my Windows laptop, the mobile site is working perfectly.
I have been trying to use the mobile site on my Mac for a long time, but it
always redirects me to the main site.
Will the Facebook people do something about it if I write to them?
Other mobile sites are working perfectly on my Mac.

Apple Mail

2011-11-12 Thread Rahul Bajaj
Hi all,

I have a couple of questions regarding Apple Mail.
1. If I wish to search for a mail, then what should I do?
Whenever I try searching with the toolbar, it mentions the number of messages
found, but I don't know how to read those messages.

2. How can I directly go to the last message in my inbox?
Sometimes, when I open my inbox, VO starts reading very old messages, so I have
to scroll through all the messages to get to the recently received messages.
So, these are my questions.
Please do help me if you can.

Cheers,
Rahul

A question.

2011-11-12 Thread Rahul Bajaj
Hi all,

I just downloaded a book from the Internet.
So, when I tried to open the file, I got a message saying that there is no
default application specified to open this document.
So, how can I open the document?
Is there a way of selecting the application in which I want to read the
document?

Cheers,
Rahul
