I will be in the look out for something for my self, so if I find I'll send it

You cannot get to fancy with it, but when I used it it worked ok.
I am using more and more though my google calendar and I sink my Iphone

there is a way to use solona. But you are right, often there are no operators.

Re: solving visual captchas with mac and safari

2011-09-11 Thread Rachel magario
Chris,

Have you used opera? I installed, but could not make it read pages, I can read
the bar and stuff, but not page content, do you think I might be missing some
information?
Also, I have the webkit installed, and safari keeps on crashing in several
pages I need to view when hovering over a certain type of content that I cannot
pin down exactly what it is. But if I use a sighted people's mac that does not
have any thing, safari does not seem to crash in the same pages. Do you think
it is one of those cases, of things that are broken with the webkit?

Thanks,
Rachel.

Re: accessible games and lion?

2011-09-11 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi Anouk. Have you tried the RS Games client. The RS Games client is free and
contains games like Monopoly, Uno, Blackjack, Yatzee, 1000 Miles and
Battleship. Unfortunately Monopoly and Yatzee don't work in Lion yet and I
don't know if they ever will. I sent an email to them asking when they'll be
fixed a month ago but I didn't get a response.
Also, if you have some site, you should try some video game emulators. I have a
few that I quite enjoy, Mame OS X specializes in coin operated arcade games,
SNES9X as you may have guessed already specializes in Super Nintendo games,
Mupen 64 Specializes in Nintendo 64 games, and PCSX specializes in PS1 games
but you need Bios for them in order to work. HTH.

NTFS in Lion

2011-09-11 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Hi,

since Lion I'm not able to connect my external HD to my Computer. It is
formatted in NTFS. Unfortunately I'm forced to use NTFS on this HD because on
my work we use exclusively Windows XP. So I know Express FAT works fine for Mac
and Win7. But we don't use Win 7 on my work place. So I have to stick with NTFS.

In Snow Leopard I used NTFS3G but that doesn't work for Lion. And as far as I
could tell there's no update yet that allows to use it in Lion.

I'm grateful for all ideas.

Thanks and
all the best
Jürgen

Re: NTFS in Lion

2011-09-11 Thread Anouk Radix
Hi, Yes I came across this seem situation as well when i wanted to use my
external 1.5 tb disk with lion.
The folks that have made ntfs-3g also have on their site a commercial ntfs
driver that works well with lion and has a 14 day free trial. After that it
will cost 25 euro though, about 30 dollars.
If you search for ntfs-3g through google the first page will be the one you
want and because they heavily promote this commercial driver you cant miss it
there.

adium

2011-09-11 Thread Rachel magario
Hi everyone,

I have done research online and I have heard in a podcast that adium can read
out loud the answer someone writes. But all I managed to do was to make vo
read, "attention! so and so talks to you" every time i get an answer, but I
don't care about that. I actually find it annoying.
I just want vo to actually read what the person wrote right after it arrives?
Just like in good old windows live.
Oh, and if any one knows how to make that happen in skype too, would be great!
Thanks,
Rachel.

Hi,
Well, I guess you know you have to install growl first?
Google for growl mac and you will find it.
It will install and you will be able to configure it through system
preferences. It will allow announcements by a lot of applications to be spoken
by alex.
For me i installed growl first and then adium and skype. With adium for me it
automatically write to me in messages. for skype it is not automatic but people
tell me it can be configured in growl to work.

Re: Weather / Temperature Apple Script

2011-09-11 Thread Keith Watson
Johnathan,

Tried curl. Unfortunately the dump is not plain text as in lynx. It more
resembles xml than anything else. I am not far enough into learning Apple
Script to be able to handle parsing text strings yet, so chose this method.
Attempted to use python to do it, but it wanted to open a terminal every time I
ran it. Got pissed off so went in another direction and wound up with what I
posted.

If there is anyone familiar with how to parse the curl output I would
appreciate the input.

Thanks,

Keith

one, because disk utility does not support ntfs natively. Is there something

Re: Weather / Temperature Apple Script

2011-09-11 Thread Scott Howell
What amazes me is that some missed the point of the script. Ricardo points out
that hitting f12 drops him on the weather widget  and that is just great;
however, not everyone has that particular item there at all times. iN fact I
tend to keep the calendar widget as the one with focus. The other point some
have missed here is the learning opportunity of how such scripts could be very
useful. Perhaps there are other ways to accomplish the same task, but you need
to look beyond this specific task and see it for what it is and that is a
learning opportunity. So, what more do "you people want?" Not much, but a new
experience in how something simple can be used for other tasks. Of course if
there is a way to use the applications available in the OS such as curl that
would be great since it means just one less thing to load.

Re: Weather / Temperature Apple Script

2011-09-11 Thread Scott Howell
Donna, you are making the assumption that someone would always have that widget
always in focus. This may be a lot of work for you, but the ends justifies the
means. Your entitled to your opinion of course; however, aside from the
learning opportunity, you still are assuming that this widget is always going
to be in focus. FOr me I always have the calendar available. Another point here
to keep in mind is that you cannot control the sources of the weather widget;
however, this script could conceivably be used to pull weather data from nearly
any source. In fact you could even have your own weather station and use such a
script to capture the information from that weather station.

pretty much looking for? Press 1 key and get your current weather?

Thanks in advance,

2011-09-11 Thread erik burggraaf
Sure, it's command and the accent key. The accent key is located above the tab
on the north american keyboard which I suspect is one reason why they chose it.
It might be in a different location on your keyboard.

Hello Anouk,

You can use either Stanza or Adobe Digital Editions (the new preview version)
to read unprotected epub on the Mac. Adobe Digital Editions will also read some
protected files, too. I've managed to read a book from Kobo with it.

Cheers,

Re: Weather / Temperature Apple Script

2011-09-11 Thread Keith Watson
All,

Like Scott said, this was an exercise in learning Apple Script and to
facilitate the request of another list member. They did not want all the
information that the weather widget gave. All they wanted was the outside
temperature. If the weather widget works for you then by all means continue to
use it and ignore this thread. I could really give a crap if you like or
dislike the way myself or others wish to garner our information.

So with that said, I have found that there is a way to do this with curl. Open
your Apple Script editor and copy the following line into it. With this code
you do not have to install Xcode or Mac Ports. And in the interest of full
disclosure, I am also going to post the original Mac Hints snippet in case
anyone is interested in whether or not it's going to be hotter today than
yesterday. Oh and as before, make sure you substitute 33617 with your own zip
code.

*** Code starts on next line ***
do shell script "curl -s
http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=33617 | grep
-A 2 tempActual | textutil -convert txt -stdin -stdout -format html | say -r
400"
*** Code ends here ***

Original Mac Hints code, with a pipe to say added by me.

*** Code starts on next line. ***
do shell script "curl -s
http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=33617 | awk
'/Today is/ || /Tomorrow is/' | textutil -convert txt -stdin -stdout -format
html | say -r 400"
*** Code ends here. ***

If you have any problems or suggestions, please don;t hesitate to ask or
criticize. I personally find that this method is slower than the other way, but
it does not require any additional installs.

Have fun.

2011-09-11 Thread Mark BurningHawk Baxter
I have never gotten Growl to announce the contents of messages in Skype as they
come in; all I can coax from the events pane is an announcement of status
changes or message arrivals. However, Growl WILL speak the contents of
messages for Adium, and I prefer to use this app for texts and Skype for

Java Script message boxes cause VoiceOver to say "busy"

2011-09-11 Thread Ryan Mann
Hello. I've noticed that since I upgraded to Lion, VoiceOver doesn't seem to
like message boxes that are on some web sites. Java Script is used to create
these message boxes. To see what I am talking about, open
http://www.webteacher.com/javascript/ch01.html. Type something into the form.
Then activate the "show me" button. Does VoiceOver read the box or does it say
"busy?" I'm thinking about emailing accessibil...@apple.com, but I want to
make sure it's not my machine first.
Thanks.

Re: Weather / Temperature Apple Script

2011-09-11 Thread Esther
Hi Keith,

I'll just add that if you want the say command in your AppleScript to announce
the temperature in another voice, you can also set that as an argument and use
any of your installed system voices (including the InfoVox voices if you have
them). For example, if you're a French user in Snow Leopard with the InfoVox
French voice you could change the last part of that shell script to a pipe to
"say -v Alice", for example, or other valid voice on your system. It looks as
though there's an extra argument to the "say" command in Lion that is not in
Snow Leopard. Does the "r" switch allow you to specify a speech rate? (That's
not something you can do in earlier versions of Mac OS X.)

Cheers,

Esther

iN fact I tend to keep the calendar widget as the one with focus. The
other point some have missed here is the learning opportunity of how such

Re: Java Script message boxes cause VoiceOver to say "busy"

2011-09-11 Thread Kevin Chao
This is not a OS X Lion or Voiceover issue, but one specific to Safari
5.1. JavaScript pop-up hangs/busies have been fixed for a while in
Webkit (engine Safari is based on and is updated constantly with new
features and bug fixes). Most of these updates end up getting rolled
into a later version of Safari.

Download/install Webkit from: http://Webkit.org
The user interface, experience and all is very similar to Safari.

Re: Question about Safari and reader

2011-09-11 Thread Kevin Chao
Safari reader has worked for me on all websites, where it should work,
without any fail at all.
If you are able to provide specific websites/URL's of where Safari
reader is failing, this would allow list members to confirm/deny if
reader is working, report it as a Safari bug, and/or suggest any
work-arounds.

Re: Weather / Temperature Apple Script

2011-09-11 Thread Traci
I am enjoying this thread. I agree that the weather widget isn't always up
front in dash board. For me, it might be the translation app.

Keith, if I use your second method with curl, is it that simple. I copy and
paste that code into script edit, and while still in script edit, I hit
command-r to see if I did it correctly?

I'm so excited if I can do this! It is a silly thing, but a feature of
window-eyes I have enjoyed!

Thank you for working on this.

I agree. The audio captcha's are so garbled that you can hardly understand

grade 2 Braille files

Ok, Teresa. I don't understand something. If the iPod also doesn't have a
computer braille option, how are you able to read grade 2 files on your braille

grade 2 files is not workable for what I'm doing.

A little confused.

Tax Program

2011-09-11 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Guys.
I am planning for next year's taxes. Maybe I am doing something wrong, but
those pdf files the IRS puts up under those accessible tax forms don't seem to
be working so well with Preview. I have several on my computer. Does anyone I'm
going to have a somewhat complicated return this year, so I thought I'd do some
preparation. know if Turbo Tax for the Mac, for instance, is accessible?

Regards,
Gigi

Re: solving visual captchas with mac and safari

2011-09-11 Thread Eric Oyen
I find that rather interesting. now why would the general public (and business
professionals) get the impression that mozilla was the most accessible web
browser for any OS? sure it works well with windoweeyes and jaws in the windows
platform. it also works mostly with orca in linux. it does not work at all in
OS X with voiceover (and I have even tried growl with it and still had a lot of
issues).

I have sent more than a few emails over the last few years and all I get back
is nothing but a load of crapola and finger pointing. now I know we can't
prevail upon a bunch of volunteer code monkeys and still have them do the work.
if they were paid and we wrote the checks, that would certainly be a different
case.

Hi,

To change the file association, do the following:

1. Select the file with the associated file extension such as mp3.
2. Press cmd-i for Get Info.
3. Navigate to the Open With section..
4. Select VLC from the Applications pop-up.
5. Press the Change All button.
6. Close the Get Info window.

You can do this for the various filetypes you wish VLC to open.

Re: creating extended journal encrypted partition on ntfs drive

2011-09-11 Thread Dan Roy
Nope, you can't resize an NTF partition. However, if you don't have anything
of value on that drive yet, you can create 2 partitions, 1 being NTFS and the
other being Journal if you wish too!

Yes, you will loose any data on that drive, but, you will only have to do it
once.

Re: Facebook Issues

2011-09-11 Thread David Eagle
Thank you, apparently this photos system has been in place since
summer 2010. Even sighted people are struggling with it because they
might have friends they added just for gaming purposes, so they don't
know what they look like. Also apparently the photos could be of
anything. There just taken from a person's profile and so some people
have been asked to identify inanimate objects as friends. Very odd.
Goodness knows why Facebook can't verify who people are by asking the
secret questions that you set up when you first sign up.

Yeah, That works. The problem with this method is, you can only select what
is in the voiceover cursor. It can get tedious jumping from spot to spot

Re: Weather / Temperature Apple Script

2011-09-11 Thread Yuma Decaux
It's just different schools of thought. Some mac users don't want to learn the
terminal nor scripting as it is quite a complicated albeit powerful tool, while
those who do have a comprehensive set of skills in unix and have delved into
appplescript can actually find their ways into making their macs pretty unique
in the way they use it. I can speak for those in IT as a lot of tasks are
repetitive, involve many terminal commands, and those scripts are a real time
saver.

I'm in the latter school, and sometimes i need to tone myself down when i have
a discussion with mates over beer and the subject of voice over, jaws etc, but
most importantly the use of the computer hits the table. I get amazed by how
some just don't google stuff they wish to know, or at least don't make it a
form of extension of themselves. But i know that they will get to it one day, i
just won't push them to.

In the meantime, i prefer customizing my experience with a gesture and peter
infovox telling me what temperature it is, nothing else. Just like the time
script i wrote in my early days of scripting.

Cheers

Re: NTFS in Lion

2011-09-11 Thread Dan Roy
I am assuming your using the free version? if so, to my knowledge, there isn't
an update for Lion. However, the paid version does have an update and it seems
to be working perfectly.

You can download a 15 day trial at:
http://www.tuxera.com/products/tuxera-ntfs-for-mac/

if you have the paid version, updates are free for life.

Re: creating extended journal encrypted partition on ntfs drive

2011-09-11 Thread Dan Roy
Even if you by the commercial driver, I am fairly sure that you can resize an
NTFS partition with the built in drive utility, after all, this is a mac! You
might be able to do it with a third party program, I am not sure about that.

Usually disks have 2 or more icons in Disk Utility, and only the first one
has a tap to modify the partition table.

Re: problems macfuse +ntfs3g

2011-09-11 Thread Dan Roy
Yes, the free version worked under SL, but, not under Lion yet. I think, they
will eventually get around to upgrading it, but, you know, it's something for
nothing, it will happen when it happens. Besides, the free version caused some
weird problems when using Lion, so, now, at least, if I have weird problems, I
can get some support if needed.

Re: reading unprotected pubs on the mac?

Hello Anouk,

Here's the link to download Adobe Digital Editions. I like it much better than
Stanza and it works for Kobo books. It's not so good with Braille, however. The
upside is, you can copy each page into a TextEdit document by using the "Copy
the last spoken phrase to the clipboard" command (VO-Shift-C). Right arrow
takes you to the next page. Here's the link:

Cheers,

Re: Weather / Temperature Apple Script

2011-09-11 Thread Keith Watson
Ester,

I did not know that the rate switch was not available in earlier versions of
OSX. I actually found it by…wait for it…RTFMing. . Doing a man on say
gave me all that info. The value for the rate is in words per minute according
to the man page. Quite frankly I think they are full of it because I set it to
1000 and was able to understand every word. Maybe Alex tops out at around 600
or so.

Anyway, having fun playing around with all this myself. Now if only I could get
Tessa to cook me a nice dinner I would be in heaven.

Tracey,

Yep, all you do is copy that line into the Apple Script editor and then do a
command r to run it. Once you see it is working you then save it off to a file
and point the Voice Over keyboard commander at the file and away you go.

The only way I've seen that happen is when you start VLC for the first time,
and VLC would then ask if you want it to be your default media player. If you
could find the VLC plist file, remove it and then restart VLC so it would ask
you again.

Re: This has brought up library questions

2011-09-11 Thread Jon Cohn
OK. Information in

/System/Library is only supposed to be Apple items.
Items in /Library/ are items available to all users of the computer.
Items in /Users/myUserName/Library are generally only available to myUserName

If the computer is only being used by the owner, then there is no real
difference between items in /Library and items in those in your personal
Library. In some cases like sound files it will search the 3 Libraries in
order (I don't remember the order) and use the first file it finds. I believe
with plist files like preferences it will read in all the files and have the
later files override settings from the earlier plist files.

Best wishes,

Re: VO reading message list?

2011-09-11 Thread Jon Cohn
Some Snow Leopard folks actually deleted all the fields in the messages table
and then re-added them in order they wanted. Tables including this one have a
column header that a sighted person can see, and that VO's trackpad commander
can access if you go to the top of the column with a single finger. When you
are in the column headings you should be able to drag and drop them in the
order you want. I would try drop before / drop after commands. VO- less and VO
greater respectively.)

Best wishes,

Re: Ripping cps with Amadeus?

2011-09-11 Thread Paul Henrichsen
Thanks. Can Amadeus rip tracks from a cd and create mp3 files?
I'm concerned about doing this with iTunes as every time I open an mp3 with
iTunes, it thinks it should add it to my music library so that I then have to
go in and remove them.
Very odd since I never saw this behavior in windows.
If Amadeus can't rip mp3 files from a cd, what would I use other than iTunes?
As an example: I have the bar code reader from AT guys. There is a cd with a
tutorial.
If I rip the tracks from the cd or even open the resulting mp3 file with
iTunes, it's going to add that mp3 to my music library for some reason.
So, I want to create an mp3 file off of the cd so I can then transfer that to
my book sense for listening.
Can Amadeus rip those tracks from the cd; or do I need to look for some other
program?

Re: Ripping cps with Amadeus?

2011-09-11 Thread Tom Frank
Hi there again,
I'm not sure if you can rip the track directly, but it's worth a try. Amadeus
should be able to import the entire CD and then copy it to another CD. I'm sure
there is a simpler program for doing this directly, but Amadeus will give you
the option of saving individual traqcks, and saving them in a variety of
formats, including MP3. The manual gives a pretty good explanation of various
file types and the pros and cons of each.

Re: Unexpected behavior with iTunes and playing mp3 files

Hi. On further investigation, I have found that choosing other from open with
and selecting vlc still only opens that particular file. If you open another
mp3 file, it opens with iTunes. There doesn't appear to be a way on the mac to
say only open mp3 files with vlc and no other app.

Re: Ripping cps with Amadeus?

2011-09-11 Thread Paul Henrichsen
Hi. I don't want to copy tracks to a cd, but just rip them from the cd.
Once I have the resulting mp3 files, I will probably transfer them to my book
sense.
I would use iTunes to do this, but it will then put the resulting mp3 files
into my music library forcing me to search for and remove them.
Under windows, I could use gold wave or easy CDA extractor, but I'm not sure
there is anything equivalent on the mac.

specifically decided to put it there.

2011-09-11 Thread ezzie bueno

Hello List,

I hope that you're lll having a fantastic weekend.
I will be writing a paper on my Mac for the first time. I
previously used Office to accomplish assgnments.
I need you to please help me navigate through formatting my paper
on pages. Some of my future papers will require the MLA format,
in which I must have my last name on each page followed by the
corresponding page number. How exactly do I go about setting
that up, along with margins, font and spacing? Also, do I use the
header section of the document to write my name, date, title,
etc.? What exactly goes in the footer section?

Thanks,

Re: Tax Program

2011-09-11 Thread Jon Cohn
I reviewed some of our taxes in Turbo Tax last year using VoiceOver. I did
very little data entry, so I am not sure about how well that works, but
TurboTax 2010 certainly was navigatable using VoiceOver, and our family will be
using the 2011 version too, so I can report back on that in a few months.

Re: making a website on the mac?

2011-09-11 Thread Jon Cohn
Sorry for the additional post, my last one was a bit unclear.

There is a program called sandvox sandbox but the b as in bravo has been
changed to a v as in Victor. This program seems to allow some interesting HTNL
editing, but I did not spend much time on it. You can download it for free,
and I believe it is shareware.

I disagree. If you use the method I outlined in an email I sent earlier today,

Difficulty reading a pdf manual in the viewer

2011-09-11 Thread Paul Henrichsen
Hi, guys. I'm having difficulty figuring out how to read a pdf manual in the
viewer. Particularly, I am trying to read the Amadeus manual. I can't figure
out how to read it line by line like I would do in windows by pressing down
arrow. I have tried interacting with the text, but it seems that VO right arrow
is the only way to read anything. What if you wanted to quickly peruse a manual
by page without doing a search? If you find something in the table of contents,
is there a way to jump to that particular section?
I'm not even sure where the manual was stored. I would have thought it would
have been in the documents folder, but it doesn't appear to be there. The only
way I can get to it is through the help menu.
Reading documentation seems much harder on the mac than under windows.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Amazon Subscribe and Save Weirdness

2011-09-11 Thread Dan Roy
Ok, this is odd indeed.

I am using Lion 7.1.

when I go to amazon subscribe and save, I can't change or edit any of my
orders. The links are there, but, when I attempt to click on change, edit
billing and or shipping info etc. nothing happens. However, if I turn off VO,
then, they work just fine. So, I turn off VO, hit enter to click on change,
then, turn VO back on and it works fine. The other links on amazon, at least,
as far as I know work just fine.
I have tried, just enter, VO-spacebar and even vo-shift-spacebar.

Any ideas on this weird behavior. This happens on both Safari and the latest
build of Webkit.

Any ideas or suggestions would be most helpful, thanks.

Hi, is it possible to read unprotected epubs on the mac with vo? I know
there is a plugin for firefox but dont think that one is there for safari.
If you cant read them natively is it possible to convert them to html or
 text format?
I think i found a site a while back that could convert mobi to text or
html but forgot if it could do epubs as well
 Thanks in advance,
 Greetings, Anouk,
