Re: ready to throw MBA out a window, can someone help?

2011-08-29 Thread Cody
Yes, time machine will work, but I'm not certain on whether or not the
migration assistant update is included or not in 10.5.8 or not. If you've done
all software updates then I see no problem in why it wouldn't work. Actually
come to think of it, I don't think the migration assistant update would be for
leopard, but rather I think the update is to Lion for leopard, so make sure you
do all updates

Re: going from an MBP to a MacBook Air

2011-08-29 Thread Cody
For the record, I just purchased, a mac pro. When i waled into the apple store,
the guy thought I meant a macbook pro, and I corrected him. I purchased the
base quadcore xeon 2.8 model with 3gb of ram. I explained exactly what I'd be
using it for and told him that I wanted to upgrade the CPU to a 6 core westmere
w3680 on my own since apple is charging way more than what it retails for,
about $600 apple wants $1200 on the online apple store. The guy told me it was
no necessary because it would void my wuarantee, which I already knew about,
and with this expensive of a machine he strong advised against it. Like you, he
explained to me that upgrading to an ssd from the 1tb drive would make a world
of difference. Not to mention I got the guys phone number and he's a really
steller guy, since he has the same setup and does the same thing I intend to
do. I still think more ram would be a better option. I can find an upgrade kit
for way less than apple wants it, and since i can shove 32 gigs of ram into
this machine, I will be doing that. I also just want to say I told them I
wanted to loo inside the actual computer and get an orientation where all the
components were and the guy was more than happy to show me. This is why I love
apple, I can trust them and take their advice without worrying that they are
giving me false information. If one person doesn't know the answer, they either
look it up or they get someone who does know what they are talking about.

2011-08-29 Thread Cody
With time machine, you aren't restoring the actual operating system, you are
just moving over your applications, data, and user settings, just as it was on
your previous machine. It needs to be said though you need to have a deticated
drive, about 1tb in size or 500gb for the images of time machine because they
are huge, depending on what you want to backup. On your new install of lion you
can choose in time machine wehat you want to copy over, and it will do just
that. But I have not done this myself, because I really don't have a drive I
can use at the moment, thinking about the 3tb time capsal, looking pretty sexy
about now, and for $299, I think it's a go for that.

RE: reading an ntfs external hd in lion

2011-08-29 Thread Geoff Shang

Hi,

According to the following link, you can write to NTFS volumes under Mac
OS X after you install a driver:

http://www.all-about-apple.com/read-and-write-to-a-ntfs-formatted-windows-drive-in-mac-os-x.html

This article was written prior to Lion, so I don't know if Lion changed
anything. I've also not tried this personally.

Lion!

Apple sox! for their new upgrade DVD, it becomes a little difficult to install
Lion if you have damaged your system. When you start the DVD you get the
following message: There was a problem with installing OS X, try installing
again. First you had to install snow leopard and then I was able to start the
DVD and format my HD with Lion!

getting MBP ready to sell

2011-08-29 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

If I can ever get my data over to the MBA, I'm going to be selling my MBP. In
preparation for that, I'm wondering about the most efficacious way to remove my
data from the MBP. Of course I can just delete things like documents, but I
want to make sure that all my user info is also gone before I send it to
someone else. Can anyone advise on this?
Thanks,
Donna

Why don't you just throw in the snowleopard dvd and do a complete reformat and

Garageband: initial guitar results, and some questions

2011-08-29 Thread Alex Hall

Hi all,
I am still not quite sure how I did it, but I set up a track to
monitor live input from the line in jack on my mini in Garage
Band. I was then able to try out all the preset amps (I have not
yet modified any settings on any of them). My results so far
are: I am very impressed, even amazed. There is no delay at all,
at least not that I can detect, and the sound is just great. To
my relatively untrained ear, it sounds as good as any
not-too-expensive amp would, with the bonus that you can get so
many effects in one place, then record. My setup is guitar to
amp (just to relay the sound properly, no effects added on the
amp) then amp to line in via a patch cable with adapter. The
only problem so far is that any clean settings are either not
working or are so quiet that I can't tell they are working.
Distortion of any kind sounds good and is at a good volume, but
without that it is hard to hear the guitar at all.

Now the questions:
1. How would I put an mp3 in my project, then record myself
playing along to it, so, for instance, I could give an acoustic
song a bass track (with me playing the bass)?
2. When recording, which I think is just r, how do you pause or
stop recording?

3. Are there hotkeys for moving forward or backward in a track?
4. Working with multiple tracks: how do you select a subset of
tracks to play, instead of all of them, and how can you choose
which track to work with (say you are cutting part of a track out
but you have 5 tracks in the project)?

Thanks in advance!

Have a great day,

Re: ready to throw MBA out a window, can someone help?

2011-08-29 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Donna,

The reason that the Migration Assistant does not like you having the same name
is for data security purposes. The easiest thing to do here is to simply make
sure that the name on the MBA is slightly different the original one. For
example, use just Donna instead of your full name. It is the short name that
is most likely causing the issue and you're not able to change that short name
in system Prefs. If you do this, the Migration Assistant will work just fine.

Consequently, you could wipe the MBA, reinstall Lion then do the Migration
during the setup process. This will allow you to have exactly the same name
and for the MBA to be more or less exactly the same, setup-wise, as your MBP.

I've used Migration Assistant in both scenarios without any issues.

Thanks.

Re: shortcut to the desktop

2011-08-29 Thread Paul Erkens
If you do want to make an alias on the desktop, you can. Go to the applications
folder, find the program, use vo shift m to get to the context menu for the
program and choose make alias. The alias will be created in the same folder the
program is in. For example, making an alias for Skype.app, creates an alias
named Skype.app, but of the type alias. The alias is just a link to skype.app
from this example, and the alias is not the program itself. Now put the vo
cursor on it, and press command c to copy it to the clipboard.
If you run snow leopard, go to the desktop, paste it with command v, go back to
the applications folder and delete the alias there. You now have its copy on
the desktop. If you click it, the program launches.
If you have Lion, after hitting command c and going to the desktop, just move
the alias from your applications folder to your desktop by pressing command
option v. Adding the option key to the paste moves the file rather than copying
it.

Hth.
Paul.

Re: ready to throw MBA out a window, can someone help?

2011-08-29 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi Tim,

thanks for this. I contacted Apple and they confirmed Cody's statement that
you can use a time-machine backup to transfer data. I seem to be having better
luck with that, I was prompted to change the name on the MBP account, and
everything seems to be backing up. God only knows what user account I'll end
up using once this is done, but I guess I'll find out.

thanks for the info.
Cheers,
Donna

 that will work?

Hi Donna, It's actually really easy and you can drink at least one if not two
cups of coffee while the system does most of the work. Then your buyer will
have a fresh clean install to start with. It'll make him feel almost as if he
just baught his new mac from the apple store.

Re: getting MBP ready to sell

2011-08-29 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi donna,

If you are using Lion, a dvd is not even needed. Just restart your computer
and when you hear the start up chime, press command R. Wait a minute or 2 and
then press command f5 to start voiceover. You will now be in Lions recovery
partition. Here you choose your language and pick disk utility. In disk
utility, pick your hard drive from the table and then select the erase tab.
Follow the prompts. The next time your computer restarts, it will be like when
you turned it onthe first time.

Re: upgrading ram and VM fusion

2011-08-29 Thread Chris Blouch
The amount of RAM Fusion uses is based on how much RAM you assign to a
particular virtual machine. You have to shut down the virtual machine
and then play with the Processors & RAM under Settings (Command-E). Of
course you also have to judge whether more RAM on the Windows side will
really make a difference. Main bottleneck I've found for Windows
(virtual or otherwise) has been hard disk performance.

going to be easier, as far as I can tell, to broadcast on a virtual machine.

My macbook has just the base 2 gigs of RAM. I want 4, as I believe that'ss the
most it can support. So, firstly, is it worth paying to have someone install
the RAM for me? I don't want to break my mac, obviously, but if it's going to
be scary expensive I could probably find a techy friend to do it for me.

Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, how do I tell fusion to use more ram
than its default? After all, there's no sense in upgrading the ram and then
letting fusion use its default amount of memory.

Thanks in advance, guys.

Re: ready to throw MBA out a window, can someone help?

2011-08-29 Thread CJ Daniel
Donna,

If you do throw the MBA out the window, could you please let me know ahead of
time where you live, which window your planning to eject the computer through,
& what time you're planning to conduct the launch? Also, could you email me
this information privately, off list, so as to avoid crowds & congestion on
your lawn? I would appreciate 24 to 48 hours notice, depending on your
location in relation to mine in southern Arizona. But seriously, I hope you
resolve your problem soon.

on the MBA has the same name as the one on my MBP, go figure, given that
my name is still the same. Anyway, I've changed the account name and

I'd really appreciate any help or suggestions anyone can provide.

Re: zipping

2011-08-29 Thread Chris Blouch
Yup. Select the file or files you want to archive then go to the File
menu and you'll find a selection that says "Compress YY files" where YY
is the number of files you have selected. It will generate a generic
Archive.zip which you can then rename to something more memorable. Of
course if you give it just one item the archive will be the item name
with .zip appended. So you can just put all the stuff you want to
compress into a folder, name that folder something useful and the
compress that which will give you a zip with a useful name.

Apple has never, to my knowledge, tracked their OS installs with serial

selecting multiple files in finder?

2011-08-29 Thread Cody
Hey guys,

How do you select non contiguous files in the finder? As in I may want to
select the first file in the finder and then select another file 5 files down
the list. In Windows i know you cna do this buy holding down control while you
use the arrow keys and then press space on all the files you want. I know there
is a way to do this in mac but I just don't know how.

Thanks,
Cody

The Mac and bookshare books

2011-08-29 Thread Shannon Dyer
Hi, all.

I'm wondering if anyone has an answer to this question. I imagine someone,
somewhere, must, which is good, as I am quite baffled.

When I used Windows, I could open an .xml file that I had downloaded from
bookshare. Internet explorer would open, and I could read the book, save it as
a .txt file, etc. However, I can't figure out how to get safari to do this.

I opened an .xml file, and safari opened, but it wouldn't show me the contents
of the book. It just kept showing me a list of things like top sites, and a
checkbox that was related to book marks. It said I could interact with the
.html content, but, when I did, it was blank.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how bookshare books can be read on the Mac? If
so, I would appreciate the help.

Shannon

Don't forget when formating the disk there is an option to safely clean out old
data. If you need me to search up specifically ow to do this, I can. I would
love to move up to a MBP< though right now my budget won't allow it.

Re: selecting files in finder and finder commands

2011-08-29 Thread Ray Foret Jr
1. arrow to the first file you wish to select.

2. Now, interact with the list.

3. Now, turn curser tracking off.

4. Now, provided your list of files is a long one, you might prefer to lock
your VO commands at this point.

5. Now, arrow to the next file you wish to select. (if VO is not locked,
press VO+up or down. IF locked, just up or down.).

6. Now, when you come to the next file to be selected, press command+space.

7. Now, repeat steps 5 and 6 till all files you wish are selected.

8. When all files have been selected, stop interacting with the list and turn
curser tracking on.

9. Now, press command+c to copy.

10. Now, navigate to the target location.

11. Now, either press command+v to paste or else Option+command+v to move.

Re: selecting multiple files in finder?

2011-08-29 Thread Esther
Hi Cody,

To select non contiguous files in Finder, or any other list (e.g. in iTunes, to
assemble a playlist), you turn cursor tracking off (VO-Shift-F3), then navigate
to any item you want, and press VO-Command-Space to add these to your
selection. At any time, you can check the items that are in your selection
with VO-F6. VO-Command-Space is a toggle select/unselect action, so if you
checked selected items with VO-F6 and discovered that you included an item you
didn't want, and want to deselect it, you can navigate with VO-Up arrow or
VO-Down arrow to the item in question and do another VO-Command-Space. Then
check with VO-F6 to make sure the item it gone. When you are done with your
selection, remember to turn cursor tracking back on with another VO-Shift-F3.
This is the most common mistake, and you will find the experience very
frustrating if you forget this step, since VoiceOver won't behave the way you
expect. Then you can perform whatever next action you want, which could be
using Command-C to copy items, creating a new playlist from selection in iTunes
with Command-Shift-N, or anything else.

So here are step by step instructions to select non-contiguous items:

1. Navigate to the first item in your list
2. Press VO-Shift-F3 to turn off Cursor Tracking
3. Navigate to the next item then press VO-Command-Space bar
4. Repeat step 3 until everything you wish to select has been selected
5. Don't forget to turn Cursor Tracking back on with VO-Shift-F3

Some additional pointers:
1. As mentioned earlier, selection with VO-Command-Space is a toggle action:
when applied to items that are already selected, it will deselect them, and
VoiceOver will announce this.
2. You can mix item by item selection (described above) with selecting a
contiguous block of items by holding down the shift key and pressing your down
arrow key. So if you want to select the first ten items in a list, but leave
off items 5 and 7, for example, one way to do this is to hold down the shift
key as you arrow down nine times. VoiceOver will announce as each item is
added to your selection. However, because cursor tracking has been turned off
in step 2, your VoiceOver cursor will still be at item 1. So you could VO-Down
arrow to the few items you don't want selected -- items 5 and 7 in the earlier
example -- and deselect them with VO-Command-Space. This method works well
when most of your selections are in large blocks, or are in large blocks except
for a few items. The only confusing point is that while pressing Shift+Down
arrow extends the selected region, your VoiceOver cursor position doesn't move
because of turning cursor tracking off. You still need to use VO-Down Arrow or
VO-Up Arrow to move your VoiceOver cursor. But suppose you want to select
everything in a list except for two or three entries near the end of the list.
It can be a lot more efficient to select all with Command-A, then move to the
last element in a list with VO-Fn-Shift-Right Arrow (or VO-Shift-End on a full
keyboard -- I use a laptop). Then, VO-Up arrow to the few items you want to
deselect and VO-Command-Space to remove them from the list.
3. Remember that you can always check your selection with VO-F6.
4. Any time you want to deselect all entries, just press the Escape key.
5. If you're in a long list, it's helpful to lock your VoiceOver keys with
VO-semi-colon. Then, you navigate the list by pressing the up and down arrow
keys, and pressing Command-Space bar to select (or deselect). You can't use
the block selection technique described in tip 2, but you can start by doing a
select all (Command-A), then locking your VoiceOver keys, and arrowing up or
down and using Command-Space bar to deselect. You can also move to the top or
bottom of the list with Fn-Shift-Left or Right arrow (or Shift-Home and
Shift-End on a full keyboard). And you can check your selection by pressing
the F6 key. Remember to unlock your VoiceOver keys by pressing semi-colon.
6. Remember to turn on Cursor tracking with VO-Shift-F3 again when you're done.
If you still have your VoiceOver keys locked, this is Shift-F3. I feel as
though I should repeat this reminder two or three more times, because it's
really the thing that most people forget.

HTH. There are lots of posts about this in the archives, including a
description of how to do this to add to playlists in "Tips on Non-Contiguous
Selection":

Re: selecting files in finder and finder commands

2011-08-29 Thread Brianna Snyder
Hi,

if you're using Lion, interact with the list where your file is, go to that
file, hit option-control-command-space, then arrow down the list until you come
to the next file, and do option-control-command-space on that one. Do that
until all your files are selected, and then do command C to copy, like normal.

Re: Questions about mac mini

2011-08-29 Thread Jon Cohn
My memory about the new mini's is that the server version and the low-end
version do not have a GPU and that the mid-tier version does have thededicated
graphics processor.

So it might be that the only the medium tier mini has issues with no display
attached. Sounds like a fun experiment...

If folks who bought mini's after Lion came out send me an e-mail
with the version and their experience, I will write up a summary to the list.

can't give instructions based on my current system, however, using

"Move" AppleScript, and paste it into the "Run Applescript" action to make

 Look for it at:

I've only read about the new format, so the way I think this would be done
 is (somewhat sketchily) is:

 1. Open Automator and select "Service" and then press (VO-Space) the
 "choose" button
 2. Navigate with VO-Right Arrow (or use item chooser menu) to an entry
that will initially read "Service receives selected" "text" (pop up
button) "in" "any application" (pop up button). You want to use VO-Space
to set the first pop up button to "files or folder" and set the second pop
 up button to "Finder".
 3. Find "run AppleScript" in the Actions library, select it, and press
return to add it to the workflow.
 4. Navigate to the workflow, interact with the "Run AppleScript action".
You want to copy the AppleScript,
and paste it into the middle of the "Run AppleScript action" where you're
 prompted to put your AppleScript.
 5. Save the workflow and name it.

Safari help sorly needed

2011-08-29 Thread Johnny Angel!
Hi all,

I tried asking this once before, but I don't think my question got through to
the list. At any rate, here goes:

I need help understanding how to download programs from websites in Safari.

Would someone please be so kind as to offer me a detailed teaching on how to do
this? I would click on a download link, but to me nothing is happening. When
I navigate to the download button, I can see at least one of the programs I
have tried downloading, but I don't know what I am to do to get the program
onto my mbp from there.

Thanks a lot everyone,

Johnny

Awesome, thanks so much Ester, greatly appreciate it. Sorry if this has already

was just easier to post to the list, I figured someone out there would know.

 Hi Anouk,

What I use to move files (not copy and paste them) is an Automator
workflow that Greg Kearney wrote some time ago that is described in this
 old archived list post:

 http://www.mail-archive.com/discuss%40macvisionaries.com/msg40248.html

The problem is that those links no longer work, and since Greg moved to a
new job in Australia his old employer's site no longer hosts those files.
In any case, under Snow Leopard, you would probably create the Automator
workflow slightly differently. I'm not upgraded to Snow Leopard, so I
can't give instructions based on my current system, however, using
Automator and the "Move Finder Items" action you should be able to create
a contextual menu option for Finder that will simply move selected files
to your designated location. Alternatively, you can get Travis Siegel's
"Move" AppleScript, and paste it into the "Run Applescript" action to make
this an Automator workflow, or you could simply select the files and then
run the AppleScript, or assign the AppleScript to a spark shortcut.

 Look for it at:

 http://www.softcon.com/mac/scripts

 HTH

 Cheers,

 Esther

Press command 3 that will display a list of online contacts. you'll have to
navigate to that contact in the contacts list and right click in order to call

Re: selecting files in finder and finder commands

2011-08-29 Thread Esther
Hi Cody,

Locking the VoiceOver keys happens when you press Control-Option-Semi-Colon.
VoiceOver will say "Control Option Lock On", and any further key presses you
execute will be interpreted as though you were also pressing the VoiceOver
Control and Option keys, too. So with these keys locked, you only press the
Down arrow key instead of VO-Down Arrow (i.e., Control-Option Down Arrow) to
move down a list. And you only press Command-Space Bar instead of
VO-Command-Space to select or deselect an additional item in the context of
non-contiguous selection. It's really only useful if you're going down a long
list, since you have to remember to unlock the VoiceOver keys again when you're
done, by pressing Semi-Colon. This gets interpreted as VO-Semi-Colon and
toggles off the VoiceOver key lock. (This is explained in the additional tips
in my post, too.)

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

If you do want to make an alias on the desktop, you can. Go to the
applications folder, find the program, use vo shift m to get to the context
menu for the program and choose make alias. The alias will be created in the
same folder the program is in. For example, making an alias for Skype.app,
creates an alias named Skype.app, but of the type alias. The alias is just a
link to skype.app from this example, and the alias is not the program itself.
Now put the vo cursor on it, and press command c to copy it to the clipboard.
If you run snow leopard, go to the desktop, paste it with command v, go back
to the applications folder and delete the alias there. You now have its copy on
the desktop. If you click it, the program launches.
If you have Lion, after hitting command c and going to the desktop, just move
the alias from your applications folder to your desktop by pressing command
option v. Adding the option key to the paste moves the file rather than copying
it.

Hi,

I have been using Tuxera NTFS (don't know if I've spelled it correctly), but it
doesn't yet appear to work under lion. I think they're working on it though.

you don't need to.
when you wipe out the computer, just stop before you put in all of your

shut it down, and then cell it
that way the person will have to input all of his/her information

Help: GarageBand constantly "busy", almost unusable!

2011-08-29 Thread Alex Hall

Hi all
After setting up a new project, selecting electric guitar from
the templates, and then adding a new electric guitar track, I
find that, quite often, GarageBand says "busy" when I try to
navigate with either the arrows or tab. This even happens in the
confirmation dialog that appears when I (finally) quit the
program. I am quite disappointed since this seems like such a
great program, but I can't use something that makes me wait
thirty seconds or more between keypresses (that is thirty seconds
of vo repeating "busy" to me). This suddenly started happening
tonight, though it had been happening some earlier when I wrote
my original (first impressions) email today. Is this some kind
of bug, is there a fix, or am I just lucky? Thanks, and I really
hope this is something I can solve so I can keep using
GarageBand.

Have a great day,

I think this was covered before, but, is there a way to get vo to report what

Looking for an accessible audio converter

2011-08-29 Thread Paul Henrichsen
Hi. I'm looking for an accessible audio converter. I need to convert ogg files
into mp3 files. I have tunesify, but I find it less than intuitive to use.
For some reason, even though I have selected the folder with its subfolders, it
doesn't seem to want to convert the ogg files. I also can't tell whether it
will convert the contents of subfolders in the original folder.
Anything better out there?
I'm use to using gold wave or the audio stripper from NCH software.
However, I don't like the heavy-handedness of NCH when it comes to reinstalling
their software or putting it on more than one machine.
Thanks.

words but i cannot do this consistently i did it once, and never
again. Also, i love the autocorrect features in word, and specially
that you can add words on the fly with the context (or application)
menu, and it seems like you should be able to do this in mac lion
(text Edit), but i do not know how, does anyone know how? Anyone have
tips on using autocorrect? any help is well appreciated.
