Re: Installed Windows7 Alone.

2011-08-16 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland

Two questions, which key's gonna be my alt key? Command? or, option?

Secondly, you said you didn't need any sighted help, yet now you say you
did, as you had to have someone click advanced. Please don't take this
rudely, but what the heck. I'm confused, did you or did you not need
sighted help. Sorry, but I'm not doing this, until I know I can do it 100%
on my own. Your instructions are great, but when I get to the partition
manager, that's where I'm getting stuck. I'm not getting what then I gotta
do.

but don't hold me to that. then the format button I'm not sure of. After
that you can press alt + N to go to next and the install should continue.
This will take a while, and if you've got no vision, I'm not sure how
you'll

know you're at the setup screen, but at that point you may be able to use

Hi!

Using BootCamp and without sighted help and totally alone I did it and
not using the unattended way.

I made the partition using BootCamp then using a firewire cable I
accessed the empty BootCamp partition in target mode and from a Windows
XP machine I used the quick format to format the BootCamp partition.
Finally held c down while powering the normal way and pressed enter a
couple of times and then continued my way with space then enter to
accept the license, c for custom and confirmed it with enter. The
instructions I have for installing a retail version didn't work exactly
on the oem version dvd I used since I had to repeat the installation
several times before it worked, I didn't have anybody to read me the
screens but I relied on my previos knowledge, anyhow it worked. On
second restart it is totally unattended by itself and I already had usb
headset, third restart came the speech with command-u. I used BootCamp
to download the drivers and burn them to a cd and it was a MacBook
13inch white from February 2009.

top macbook air or top macbook pro 13 inch with ssd

2011-08-16 Thread anouk radix

Hello,
I am seriously thinking of rejoining the macworld again. I know I want a
13 inch laptop (11 inch would be even better but the 13 inch macbook air
seems to be able to have better specs in regards to ssd harddrive space
and processor clock speed).
In the Netherlands the top macbook air model with 256 gb internal memory
and the 1.8 ghz i7 processor or the 13 inch macbook pro with 2.7 ghz i7
processor and 128 gb ssd cost about the seem and I just cant choose
between them. I cant find any comparative reviews either. The graphics
chips are the seem and the different screens dont matter to me but size
and weight and battery life do.
The macbook pro seems to use an older ssd though but has the
significantly faster processor of the two.

Would I loose a lot of pseed going the macbook air route?

macbook air vs macbook pro optical connections and internal sound

2011-08-16 Thread anouk radix

Hi,
I was always rather fond of the macbook pro speakers, do the different
current macbook air models have the seem ones or are they inferior? Do
the different airs have the seem speakers?
I know macbook pro has optical input and output, especially output owuld
be nice for me, is this also possible with the air via a combijack or
something like this?

Thanks,

using macbook air with garageband and external keyboard?

2011-08-16 Thread anouk radix

Hi everyone,
One of the uses for my new mac would be getting to know garageband.
The macbook air isnt especially endowed with a lot of usb ports but does
it have bluetooth, that way i could save one usb port that normally
would be used with my braille display.
Also, are the internal speakers good enough to use garageband or should
I have to connect an external soundcard and speakers instead?
How wouldyou use macbook air with external music ckeyboar? Are there
ones that work with os x lion and usb out of the box?

Thanks,

11 vs 13 inch macbook air?

2011-08-16 Thread anouk radix
Hello everyone, Because I need my laptop on the go all the time I am
considering buying a macbook air over a macbook pro. I like power but I
hope the ssd in the macbook air makes up for the higher lcock speed in
the 13 inch macbook pro. I was thinking i would need firewire for an
external soundcard but apparently there are now also external ones that
use usb 2.0. I guess the macbook air has bluetooth so I oculd use my
braille display tat way. I dont use dvds or cds often so thats no
problem either. The worse sound is not nice but I do have headphones I
can use.
So for me at this time there seems nothing against choosing the macbook
air over the macbook pro.
Now I have to either choose 13 or 11 inch. I am totally blind so the
quality of the screen does not really matter for me and I dont need an
internal card reader.
In the Netherlands the 11 inch model I want costs 1300 euro, its the one
with 128 gb memory, 4gb ram and the i7 1.8 ghz i7 processor.
Alternatively I would go for the 13 inch version with 256 gb, 4gb ram
1.8 ghz i7 processor. This one though is 300 euro more expensive and I
think the only big difference is the better screen and the 128gb more
memory. I do have an 1.5tb external drive though and I hope I will be
able to get by with 128 for my system files.
I have heard though that the 13 inch versionhas a bigger internal accu
and that might matter with the 1.8 ghz processor.

I find it difficult to choose so any help/advice would be appreciated.

11 vs 13 inch macbook air keyboard size

2011-08-16 Thread anouk radix
Hi, I have not yet seen the new macbook air models, does anyone know how
they achieve the smaller size of the 11 inch model?
Do they make the keyboard smaller, smaller keys or less room between
them, i guess the 11 inch model is not as wide as the 13 inch so they
have to size down something, right?

i5 vs i7 speed and battery use

2011-08-16 Thread anouk radix

Hi everyone,
I have been delving a bit more into the apple site (the different
macbook air models) apparently the accu in the 11 inch is a lot less
powerful and that is with the normal i5 processors. The i7 upgrade is a
bit costly. I wonder if it is really worth it. If you compare with the
standard 11 inch it only has 1 mb more cach and 200 mhz more clockspeed.
I am not sure about the diffences between the i5 and i7 families htough.
I know i7 has turboboost but not sure if the i5 has it too. I assume i7
uses more energy so drains the battery earlier?
I cannot find the processor names on the apple website so cant check
reviews.
Can anyone tell me more about the i5 and i7 processors and if it is
worth going for the i7 upgrade in regards with speed (turboboost I
suppose) and if it will drain the battery significantly more?

Thanks in advance, again,

Audible Sign On Problems

2011-08-16 Thread Kevin Mattingly
I'm having issues signing into audible all of a sudden. I've changed my
password several times and can't seem to get signed in on my mac. I have no
problems with my windows machine. Anyone else having issues? It does look like
they've linked the audible site with amazon now and maybe that is contributing
to my issues.

macbook kopen in Nederland

2011-08-16 Thread anouk radix

HAllo,

Thanks, i googled some and apparently its worth it if you get the 11
inch model, also better for battery life in general. For the 13 inch
there is a 10 % performance if you go from i5 to i7 for the 11 inch
thats 25%.

Re: macbook air vs macbook pro optical connections and internal sound

2011-08-16 Thread Chris Blouch
As far as I know all Macs for many years have had the combo
optical/analog audio outputs. Great for hooking a Mac up to a
surround-sound AV receiver and the like. All Intel-based Macs have this
feature (2006 and newer) and I found some references even earlier for G5
Macs (2003) having this feature and that the underlying support for
high-quality audio was part of OSX 10.2 Jaguar (August 2002). Beyond
that Google goes silent.

Best Most Accessible AirPrint Printer?

2011-08-16 Thread Mika Pyyhkala
Greetings,

I would like to get an AirPrint enabled printer, and wonder if you
have any recommendations.

Many of the AirPrint enabled printers use a touch screen, and I'm not
sure how accessible these will be to operate?

I would also like the printer to have web print capabilities, and am
inclined to get a laser printer as I would mostly be printing text.

Finally as of earlier in the summer the Boston Apple store did not
stock many of these, so I have not been able to check the models out
in person in terms of the hardware.

Thanks,
Mika Pyyhkala

Re: Routing input from multiple sounds cards on a Mac mini

2011-08-16 Thread Chris Blouch
Depends on how high-end you want to go. Here is one place that makes an
iPad/iPhone app to control a number of digital mixers. Not sure how
accessible it is though since I've never tried it. All my mixers are the
old analog Mackie types that don't have automation. They use wifi from
the iPad to your Mac and then the Mac controls the mixer.

Wouldn't you be better off with a small mixer? You could more easily
control audio output and tonal quality if desired via hardware controls.

A brief answer to avoid being off topic. To connect to your xp pro box from the

Turn off simple file sharing and then share the windows drive with full control

Re: VMware fusion and JAWS

2011-08-16 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi Rod,
In fusion, you have 2 choices to remap keys. One is sharp keys and the other is
fusion itself. If you do it in fusion however, the keys you define will work in
all virtual machines you have. If these are all windows, there is no problem.
Regarding the fusion way of doing it: go into fusion's preferences with command
comma. Then choose the keyboard item from the toolbar and do the following in
the first tab sheet.

In this key definition screen you have a from section, and a to, section. In
from, choose right option, from the combo box. There are checkboxes, but ignore
them for now. In the to, section, go for insert. Now, you cannot simply tab
away from the to, combo box, because it will then replace your chosen insert
key with the tab key. V O right won't work either because the combo box is
still open and any key will be interpreted as a destination mapping. Just
command tab out of fusion and then command tab back in again. Now, the combo is
closed, and you can go to the ok button as normal. So in short, map your right
option key to insert, by defining it in the fusion preferences.

Re: Installed Windows7 Alone.

2011-08-16 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland

OK, so here's my thing, here is where I am getting stuck:

You initially said:

this next screen will be for the

partition chooser, and for me I had to have someone click advanced, then
format, on the bootcamp partition, which I think is where the fire wire
thing came into play. for me the bootcamp partition was the last in the
list, and I don't remember the command to hit advanced I think it is alt+D

So I'm kind a confused here.

Do I need to go into alt+D for advanced? And once in there do I need to tab
around to get to the list of Partitions?

If not, then how do I make absolutely sure I am not going to format my OSX
volume, thus totally blowing Lion outta the water like I've been doing every
blasted time I try in the past.

I'm sorry but there is no margin here for error. I've gotta do this
correctly first go.

Also once in the list, you said the last option was the bootcamp partition.
I will only have 2 partitions once I use the assistant to create the
partition.

I'll have the main extended journaled which is my startup partition for
Lion, then I'll have the other partition which I'll make for Windows 7.

So do I need to some how tab to the list, then down arrow to get to the
bootcamp partition? See, this is where I'm really getting myself very
confused.

Do I even need to fool with the advanced button.

further, you didn't say how to next my way past the partition screen, unless
I over-looked it, which is possible.

Thanks.

Sorry if I'm being annoying, I just really wanna do this badly, and with
your help, I'm so close, it's just this one part of your directions that is
still a bit grey to me.

Thank you ever so much for your continuing help.

Sorry, but I'm not doing this, until I know I can do it
100%

on my own. Your instructions are great, but when I get to the partition

The firewire came into play in my case because I couldn't find a way to

You can install 7 no problem without a firewire port. you just open

but don't hold me to that. then the format button I'm not sure of. After
that you can press alt + N to go to next and the install should continue.
This will take a while, and if you've got no vision, I'm not sure how
you'll
know you're at the setup screen, but at that point you may be able to use
narrator, but in my case I couldn't because I didn't have any sound
drivers
installed. Maybe if you left a USB headset plugged in windows would
detect

it and install the drivers and then you could use narrator that way.

Chris,
A brief answer to avoid being off topic. To connect to your xp pro box from
the mac, do the following in xp pro.
Turn off simple file sharing and then share the windows drive with full
control permissions. Here's how.

From the control panel and then folder options, go to the second tab sheet
called view, and there, turn simple file sharing off. Then, go into the my
computer icon, go to the drive to share, open the context menu with shift
f10, find sharing and security, hit enter to open its dialog, and fill in
the following. The share name can be whatever, as long as you know what it
is. Go to the permissions button. This opens a new dialog. Hit tab 3 times
to get to the permit column, and tick the topmost checkbox so that the
people accessing the share you are creating, will have full control in it.
Okay the permissions dialog, and okay the sharing dialog. Now you have your
share set up. On the mac, hit command k and there you go. Hope this helps.

Subject: found a solution for command k not working dialog

Hi list,

If you encounter the following problem under Lion, I may have found a
solution by pure luck.

Problem:
Under snow leopard, I could access a share point on an xp machine. I did
this by pressing command plus k on the mac. A dialog would appear, asking
the address of the server to connect to, the user name and password for
the windows user account to log in to on the windows server machine, and
which shares to mount from the windows machine on to the mac. If this
sounds familiar to you, then read on.

Under Lion however, this same procedure, i.e. trying to log in to my
windows machine from my mac, won't work any longer. I don't know why, but
I do know how to work around it.

In the command k dialog, you normally enter the protocol to use, followed
by the netbios name of the windows machine. Say that the windows machine
that I want to log in to from my mac is called paulserver, then from my
mac, I would issue a command k, and then type in:

smb://paulserver
and press enter. The connect button is the default command button in the
connect to server dialog, so just pressing enter after typing where to
connect to will do, without having to go through the rest of the dialog.
The smb:// prefix is just the way that you tell your mac how to approach
the windows pc. It will be familiar to many of us, because on the
internet, You use the http protocol to ask a page from a web server, and
therefore you normally start the address with http://. Likewise, you can
approach an ftp server using the prefix: ftp://. A windows machine uses a
microsoft protocol, and from what I remember from reading about the unix
world, these guys call the windows networking protocol samba. S a m b a.
Its prefix is therefore named smb://.

Under Lion, the netbios name of the windows computer seems to be the
problem. If you simply replace that name with the ip address of that same
computer, the mac command k dialog suddenly works. I saw an interesting
message on this list, how you could mount a windows share on the mac using
terminal. However, I am not at all familiar with terminal yet. And while I
was frighing my hamburger, it occurred to me that I could just as well try
the ip address rather than the netbios pc name, and this seems to do it.

By the way if you don't know the ip address of your windows box, do the
following on windows: start your command prompt. There, type

ipconfig
and press enter. That is: i p c o n f i g.
Windows will tell you the ip addres

Re: considering installing windows Vista but would like advice what to watch for

2011-08-16 Thread M. Taylor
Hello,

I think you will encounter problems attempting to install Vista; what problems?
I cannot say but Windows 7 is the Windows OS of choice.

If your finances will not allow you to purchase Windows 7, Microsoft does offer
some discount programs for which you may qualify.

If you truly wish to install Vista instead of Windows 7, you will be virtually
on your own as no one will bother troubleshooting Vista.

Just my opinion, of course.

Using Course Smart e-books

2011-08-16 Thread Dawn Benbow
Hi everyone,

Does anyone have experience using e-books from Course Smart? I discovered last
semester at school that this is the e-book company that my University uses the
most for their text books. They say their books are accessible, but I wasn't
having much luck last semester with them, so wanted to ask for some help before
starting up again next month. I know they were scheduled to give a presentation
at one of the conventions this summer, but I wasn't able to go and sit in on
it. So I was hoping someone here might be able to help me.

Thanks very much.

Re: Using Course Smart e-books

2011-08-16 Thread Justin Ekis
Hi dawn,

I'm going through this process right now. After signing up with the web site,
the first thing you want to do is to email accessibil...@coursesmart.com and
ask them to enable the accessible reader on your account.

Once the accessible reader is enabled, when you access a book, you will be able
to see the text. However, there are additional optimizations that can be
performed to make it easier to navigate with a screen reader. This includes
descriptions of images in the book, as well as better tagging of paragraphs,
headings, lists and tables. They say that 80% of CourseSmart titles are already
tagged. My book was not. If you read a book and it just seems to be raw,
unorganized text, write to the same email address and provide the title and
author of the book so that it can be submitted for tagging. Unfortunately, this
takes a few weeks, but you can still read the book as it is until they are
finished with it. It is definitely usable even in an untagged form, it's just
much more pleasant once the work is done.

Hi everyone,

Does anyone have experience using e-books from Course Smart? I discovered last

RE: 10.7.1 is out everyone

2011-08-16 Thread Missy Hoppe
well, I just installed this lion update on my external drive, and it doesn't
seem to resolve any of the issues I was
experiencing with lion. The com.apple.doc.extra thing is still there, and if
possible, midi playback sounds even worse than
it did with the original release of lion. I'll definitely be sticking with snow
leopard for the forseeable future, but will
continue to install lion updates onto my external drive so I'll be able to test
it periodically and see if anything has been
fixed.
Thanks for letting us know the update was released, and here's to hoping that
the next update actually has noticeable
improvements.

Safari in Lion unresponsive

2011-08-16 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Dear Listers,

I have recently installed Lion and it is a clean install on a external
drive. I'v just been trying to access my bank websites and it is
completely unusable with Safari under Lion. While I can use my tab key
to move through the links, I don't seem to have any use of the vo keys
with arrow keys. I seem to be able to find the html section of the
page but I can't interact with it. I can jump to a table in which my
accounts are listed with vo+command+t command but I can't vo+arrow
through the table. It's a mess. Am I doing something wrong? Item
chooser menu is also strange: it no longer allows me to type a few
letters to jump to a particular elelemtn on the page which I know
exists. Also, as I'm typing this message in my browser, I get no
Voiceover feedback as to what I'm typing. So do forgive the typos.

Look forward to any responses, suggestions. Should I be writing to
Accessibility By the way, I've just installed the 10.7.1 update of mac
os Lion.

Many thanks,

Andrew

Reading messages in Skype

2011-08-16 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Dear Listers,

I have recently been having a few meetings to do with my work on
Skype, and those who have participated in the conference, kept writing
little notes to other members. I knew they were coming through to me
as Voiceover kept saying New window, but I couldn't find a way of
reading the notes, nor could I find them thereafter, once we had all
hung up. Is there a way of accessing the messages that somebody is
sending to you while you are talking on Skype?

Many thanks for your input.

Best wishes

Hello,

Thank you for your email and feedback. Mac OS X Lion 10.7.1 did not
include any bug fixes for Safari or VoiceOver that would have improved
performance from 10.7.0. Apple is currently investigating this issue,
unfortunately we cannot comment on when it may be resolved. If you
would like to see what was addressed in this update we have provided a
link to the knowledge base article below.

Mariner Software accessability with Voiceover

2011-08-16 Thread Israel
Dear Visionary group,

I have recently been looking at some of the products put out by Mariner
Software. Mainly, Montage, Contour, and others. A couple sites which I
visited highlight one of the main features which the company spotlights which
that their Montage software is accessible to blind and visually impaired users
of Voiceover. Some of Montage's competitors which I have tried are not so I am
wondering if list members who have tried Montage, Contour, or Story Mill have
had wonderful success with these products.

I am thinking of attempting to download a demo, but I am hoping those who have
used the software can share some thoughts. If it is easier, I will include my
e-mail address so one can contact me off list for as not to fill up listers' in
box with potentially long messages. thank you.

Hello Listers,

I've come to notice that a lot of you are now using Lion. Before
I decide on whether I should use Lion, I'd like to hear your
thoughts on it. What exactly does it do? What advantages would I
have using Lion? What problems should I watch out for in

I did not speak about a sighted person helping me with the advanced

In my case since I boot the mac holding c down with windows7 oem dvd in
it it boots directly into windows. Prior doing that I use bootcamp to
create the partition of course then I turn off mac. Now I power the
mac holding t down for target mode, why? Simply because I want to use
it as an external drive to format the bootcamp partition cause my oem
windows7 dvd refuses to make the formatting. I get the firewire cable
and connect to a windows machine or to a mac running windows. Once
connected and when I see the bootcamp partition from the mac I wanna
put windows7 on I format it with the other machine. Having done that I

So do I need to some how tab to the list, then down arrow to get to the

Thanks in advance for any info you can give me.

re: Questions about Skype and the Macintos Time

2011-08-16 Thread ezzie bueno

Hi Francisco,

Look for the "contacts monitor" button to the left of the
contacts list. When you press it, Skype will only show you the
contacts who are online.
To quickly check the time on your Mac, you will first need to
enable the shortcut on your keyboard. To do this, open the
VoiceOver Utility by pressing VO and F8. Select the commanders
category. When you do that, press the tab key and select the
keyboard tab with VO and the space bar. Press the tab key again
to Check the box that says "enable keyboard commander". Keep
pressing the tab key to select the
rest of the settings. Whichever option key you use will become
your commander key.
On the following table, press VO and the right arrow until you
find the T followed by the button that'll inticate the time of
day. When you close the utilitity, you will now be able to check
the time by pressing the option key you chose along with the
letter T.

HTH,
Ezzie

I don't mean to be rude guys, bud isn't it off topic for a Apple Mac list to
discuss how to install Windows 7?

You can install 7 no problem without a firewire port. you just open
 bootcamp
assistant, split your hard drive in half, because 20gb will not be enough
for windows. When the system reboots, it will automatically boot into the
windows setup so wait until you stop hearing the drive spin and the first
screen will probably be the language chooser or the installer. In any
 case,
press enter, then alt + I. the next screen is the license agreement, press
alt + A and then alt + N for next. this next screen will be for the
partition chooser, and for me I had to have someone click advanced, then
format, on the bootcamp partition, which I think is where the fire wire
thing came into play. for me the bootcamp partition was the last in the
list, and I don't remember the command to hit advanced I think it is alt+D
but don't hold me to that. then the format button I'm not sure of. After
that you can press alt + N to go to next and the install should continue.
This will take a while, and if you've got no vision, I'm not sure how
 you'll
know you're at the setup screen, but at that point you may be able to use
narrator, but in my case I couldn't because I didn't have any sound
 drivers
