Re: MOVING Mail

2011-07-31 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Johnny,

To move a message to a different mailbox, place yourself on the message and
press VO-Shift-m to get a contextual menu. Then type "mo" for "move", press
right arrow then locate the desired mailbox, and press Return. You can type the
first letter of the mailbox to save time.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: searching for mail in lion with classic layout

2011-07-31 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Kary,

If you press Cmd-Option-f you'll be in the Search box. After entering your
text, a menu will open offering you choices of where to search, such as
subject, body of message, and so on, and also showing what has already been
found. Escape will get you out of this menu.

If you stop interacting with the Toolbar, you'll find the Favourites bar to the
right. Interacting with this will show you options of where to search.

Cheers,

Anne

Hi Ann,

Perhaps I need to figure out where my fingers are, , because when I
press vo shift M I merely highlight the word in the message I currently am on.

Oh do I need help! grin

More help perhaps in setting up things with vo is needed?

 Hi all,

I am interested to know how everyone is now using Lion Mail?

At first, I was using the classic view, but now I have switched to the new
 standard 3 column layout.

I have my messages grouped by conversation (collapsed) and I used to hit
enter to open all of the conversations (previously known as threads) in
various windows. The oldest message would appear at the front, but in
Lion the newest window opens in the front. So I have stopped using this
 method.

I then listened to Mark Taylor's podcast on how he uses Mail. He simply
just uses the tab key to jump between each of the 3 columns. I tried this
method and found it ok, but I felt it did not always auto read the
message. However, it is not a bad approach if you only want to use one
key on the keyboard. Whilst Mark is in the message contents view, he then
uses the arrow keys to move back and forth (left and right) between the
messages within the thread). interesting approach, but I think I have
 found a better way.

I looked to see if Apple had uploaded the VO online help file yet, and
indeed they have. Apple suggest using VO+J to jumps between the messages
list and the content of the message. I tried this and it works great.

So now I just scroll down my messages list, if I see a thread or
conversation I like the look of, then I just expand it by pressing the
right arrow and then move to the first message in the thread/conversation
and then press VO+J, VO will then start reading the message immediately
and skips reading the mail header (who the message is from) and to jump
back to the messages list, just either hit backspace to delete the message
or press VO+J again which will take you back to the messages list to where
 you were in the list.

I find this approach works really well, and I might implement the
favourites function in lion mail to quickly jump between mail boxes and
folders by holding down the command key and a number. For more
information about the new favourites feature in mail,, then check out
 Ricardo Walker's excellent podcast.

I would be interested to know how others are now using mail, and what
about using it with the track pad? I have not done it that way yet as I
have mainly been using Lion on my iMac with a full keyboard.

However, I still really miss being able to jump to the top or bottom of my
messages list (VO+command and either up or down arrow), this no longer
 works.

Anyone having the follwing issues with safari and mail?

2011-07-31 Thread Naama Shang
Hi,
I have noticed the following issues since upgrading to lion:

1. Safari -- If I start interacting with html content, I can VO for a few
lines, and then VO would lag and restart itself, and I'd be placed at top of
page again.
Any suggestions, please?

2. Mail - I am not seeing duplicates. For instance, if I am subscribed to a
list with multiple addresses, I only see a message once instead of multiple
times.
Also, if someone sends me messages to all my addresses, I see only one. This is
very frustrating.
I am using Lion, macmail in classic view and I have an iMac from June 2011.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Naama

Are you using conversation view in Mail? If so, your messages are probably
being grouped.

Which website causes VO to crash?

Have you ran disk utility and repaired permissions since upgrading to Lion?

Setting up an automation with Automator...

2011-07-31 Thread David Hole
Hi folks.
Can someone here tell me in short how I set up an automation with
Automator using VoiceOver?
I read the help-stuff for Automator, but it only told me to drag the
actions somewhere, but with VO I can't find any logic place to drag
them...
Thanks much in advance.

Re: PDF to text converterS, anyone?

2011-07-31 Thread Rose Morales
I had the same question. Pdf to rtf service was the best I found. This app lets
you open PDF documents in text edit. You install it by copying the .service
file into a folder on your hard drive. The folder is specified in the readme.
Your document is still a PDF, so you'll have to copy and paste to a new
document and then save the new document in the format which you prefer. Here's
a download link for this app.
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/17950/pdf2rtfservice

Another option is to open preview, hit command-a, command-c, and paste your
text into text edit. This will work for most PDF's.

Re: MOVING Mail

2011-07-31 Thread
Another way this could be accomplished is: place folders in your favorites
bar, once you have them in the order you want make sure you know the exact
order. Once you know the correct order, go to the message you want to move,
hit command control plus the corresponding mailbox where you want the message
moved, and it will move it, it will even announce what folder it has been moved
too. HTH

Itunes works much better on the mac than it does in windows. However, I use the
vlc player, which you can get from videolan.org. It plays just about
everything. The problem with itunes is that it insists on adding everything you
play to your library, vlc works great and is very accessible.

One letter Navigation?

2011-07-31 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hi All.

Just having a look at Safari, also went to Safari's preferences just in case I
missed anything. But how does one do one letter navigation? Also tried
opening a new web page and because I had played Mark's podcast on Mail, the
same started playing again even though I had quit safari and restarted the Mac.

Any help will be appreciated.

I don't have a play option that I can see. All I can do is use my

 Hi Folks,

I think there's already been some discussion about slowness in iTunes
10.4, but I'm wondering if other folks are experiencing the following
 specific behavior:
If I select "Music" in the sources list and then attempt to navigate
through my songs, it takes several seconds to VO up and down through my
songs or left and right through the fields in each song. However, I
experience no delays when navigating through my lists of Books, Movies,
TV Shows or even through the contents of my playlist folders.

My music library is 30GB, movies library is 10GB, other libraries are
smaller, but regardless of size or number of items, I don't recall having
this issue in the previous version of iTunes running under SL.

This is on a late 2010 macbook air with 4GB RAM and a speedy SSD. The
whole library is located on the SSD. I've tried changing views, columns,
and any other options I could think of.

 TIA,
 Bryan

A note about Lion, bootcamp and accessibility

2011-07-31 Thread Cody
Hi listers,

While this may be not totally related to accessibility, it does effect
voiceover. And I thought it'd be a good thing to have for the archives.

If you are thinking about installing Windows Vista or Windows 7, be sure to
allocate half the drive to OSX and the other half to Windows. The mistake I
made was to give only 20GB to Vista. The result was 22 mb free and windows
going into an endless reboot cycle.

Here is where it may save some people trouble if you already have a 20gb
partition with windows vista or 7.

The easiest way to resolve this issue is by getting a utility called Win Clone.
Win clone images your windows partition, and allows you to delete the bootcamp
partition using bootcamp utility and then you are able to recreate the bootcamp
partition with bc util and split the drive in half.

Here is the problem.

Win clone will not work under Lion, only 10.5 and 10.6. The work around is to
edit /system/library/core-services/SystemVersion.plist and edit the lines with
"10.7" with "10.6.6"

By doing this, it renders all system applications unusable, even voiceover, if
it happens to crash or if you turn it off, and you will need a backup copy of
SystemVersion.plist. The reason you need a backup copy, is not only is it a
good idea to always have the original, but you will not be able to open text
edit. As soon as you replace SystemVersion.plist again over your modified one
everything will work again.

Even though modifying this file will allow Win Clone to run, it still will not
be fully functional.

So therefore I figured i'd let the list know of this issue and why you
shouldn't do it if you are a voiceover user.

I wanted to also add, that while it's said that Lion does not support
bootcamping with Vista, it does actually work. I made my partition and rebooted
and installed Windows as normal. When the bootcamp utility starts it will tell
you that you need to download Windows support drivers for your devices. What it
doesn't mention is that these drivers are only for Windows 7, so if you are
wanting to install Vista, you can bypass this step. Note: after Vista is
installed, you will need to have your Snow Leopard disk handy because you will
need to install the appropriate drivers from the SL DVD. So in short, Vista
works just fine, even from a clean bootcamp install with Lion, although it's
not officially supported...

HTH,
Cody

It works most of the time, but I found it also carries to situations outside

Re: A question about a specific example of slowness in iTunes 10.4

2011-07-31 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

This appears to be a VO problem, not a iTunes or Lion one. I'm guessing that
it has something to do with how VO focus is managed within tables and such. If
I turn VO off, use shift and down arrow 5 or 6 times, then turn it back on, VO
will announce that I have that specific number of items selected.

As Ricardo mentioned, if you are not interacting with the specific table, press
the first letter of the item you wish to move to, it will actually go there, VO
just won't tell you. The important item here is that you can't be interacting
with the table. So, it's just another one of those "fix one thing, break
something else" sort of issues. Just wish it didn't affect something we so
often use.

This sort of thing has happened in VO before and was remedied so I suspect that
Apple will be able to fix it again. Hopefully, soon.

Later…

Re: PDF to text converterS, anyone?

2011-07-31 Thread Esther
Hi Rafael,

This post that I sent just after you posted your question does not seem to have
made it to the list, so I'll try reposting.

A few months ago William Windels asked on list for a command line tool to do
batch pdf to text conversions, and Tim Kilburn directed him to the pdftotext
Shell tool found at:

http://www.bluem.net/en/mac/others/

Then in May, a list member asked again for an application that would work like
pdf2txt on windows, and I posted that you could just download the pdftotext
Shell tool from the above URL, and put an AppleScript wrapper around the
command to run it from the GUI instead of from the Terminal command line.
(Actually, I mentioned putting it into an Automator workflow, but that was
because I was thinking about a way to get it into the Finder contextual menu;
it's not necessary and just an AppleScript wrapper will do).

If you download the pdftotext Shell tool, it will get installed on your
computer into:

/usr/local/bin/pdftotext

Just open your AppleScript Editor (use Command+Shift+U in Finder to go to your
Utilities folder, press "a p" to go to the AppleScript Editor and use
Command+Down Arrow or Command+O to launch it) and paste in the following code
(staring below the line labeled "Cut Here", and ending with the line "end run"):
---Cut Here---
(*
Use pdftotext to create a text version of the selected PDF file
   Created 17 May 2011
*)
on run
tell application "Finder"
set chosenFile to the selection as alias
end tell
do shell script "/usr/local/bin/pdftotext " & quoted form of POSIX path
of chosenFile
end run

You can use Command+K to compile it. And to test it you can highlight one or
more PDF files in FInder, then Command+Tab back to the AppleScript Editor and
press Command+R to run the AppleScript. For each .pdf file you
highlighted, a corresponding .txt file should be created in the same
folder. You can save the AppleScript file with a name of your choosing (e.g.,
pdf2txt) as either a script or an application. If you save it as an
AppleScript and put in the "Library/Scripts" folder of your home directory, it
will show up as one of the menu options in the AppleScripts menu on your status
menu bar (navigated to with VO-M twice or Control+F8). And of course, you
could also assign this a keyboard shortcut to the AppleScript.

HTH. You can also read some more details about accessing the
web site for the pdftotext shell script
in the earlier archived list post:
• "Re: something like pdf2txt on the mac?"
http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg45375.html

A second way to handle this is to use the Services menu option of "New TextEdit
Window Containing Selection". Check the box for this option under System
Preferences on the "Keyboard Shortcuts" tab of the "Keyboard "menu after
selecting "Services" in the shortcuts category table. You can also assign it a
custom shortcut if you like. Then, when you have a PDF open in Preview, do a
Command+A to select all, and choose the "New TextEdit Window Containing
Selection" option that will now appear in the "Services" submenu of the
application on the menu bar, or apply your custom shortcut. A TextEdit window
will open containing a text version of your selection. This method can also be
used on text selected from any application. It's a great way to read
inaccessible web pages by selecting their content and using the service menu
option, because it strips off bad HTML coding that prevents VoiceOver from
reading text content. When applied to selections in iWork's "Pages" documents,
it will let VoiceOver read off embedded tables or lists. You can search the
Mail Archive site for this list for some of the previous discussion using this
option from earlier this year. This method is different from simply copying
and pasting into a TextEdit window because of the Services processing, and it
is also much lower overhead on the system. However, for what you want, I think
my first outlined solution is better, and can also be applied to multiple file
selections.

Cheers,

Esther

So I wanted a blue tooth headset for my Imac, since my plantronics wouldn't
pair with it. And I got some recommendations on what headset to pick with a
mic. I wanted to take it a step further though, I wanted to be wireless, so
I could move around while using skype, and even be on my IMac. So I got the
logitech wireless headset with behind the head design. It ran about 99
bucvks retail but I got it off amazon for about 71 bucks.
But this thing is flawless! It's literally plug and play. Only thing you
need to do is go to system preferences and tell your mac to use it, and your
done. I live inn a 1350 square foot town house, and there is no where in
the house I couldn't go without losing the connection. The sound quality
for me is great, I don't know about the mic yet, I haven't had a chance to
set up skype or vantrillow on my computer yet since I did a clean install of
lion on tuesday. And the best part for me is, since I don't need the
screen, I can work on things from the kitchen table, witch is about 25 feet
from my desk, and the keyboard or the headset never loses or breaks up the
connection. So if your looking for a wireless headset for the computer,
this is the way to go. The only thing that would make it better, is being
able to connect to the IPhone. Can't have everything though. HTH

recording international podcasts

2011-07-31 Thread William Windels
Hello everyone,

I am sending this mail to both lists: macvisionaries and viphone mailing list.

I just want to share/ask something about recording podcastts for everyone.
I, and perhaps some others, who don't speak English as first language, find it
sometimes difficult to listen to podcasts where the computer- or other
device-voice is set fast.
IN mac terms, 40% of the speed is good but, in quiet a lot podcasts , the speed
seems to be something like 60 or higher.
I am simply guessing but, it's fast.

> So, I would simply ask/suggest to set a lower speed if you record podcasts
> for a international public.

Pls, let me or the list know about any comments about this.

Thx for yoru understanding and have a good day!

Lion and two keyboard commands

2011-07-31 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
Hi All,

two quick ones for you, I'm just doing a clean install of Lion, if I need to
bring the WiFi networks chooser or the App Store sign in screen to the Voice
Over focus / for ground, what is the keyboard stroke again please? I believe it
was something like control, options, FN, F2, noting this is on a MacBook.

when using Lion, how does one use the newer version of the Item Chooser,
previously I would bring it up by VO I, then type a few letters, and with quick
nav enabled I would press the up and down keys together to jump to the link .
item desired. but this seems to no longer work.

thanks for any pointers.

RE: PDF to text converterS, anyone?

2011-07-31 Thread Bejarano, Rafael P.
Thanks, Esther. I'll check it out.

Subject: Re: PDF to text converterS, anyone?

(Actually, I mentioned putting it into an Automator workflow, but that was
because I was thinking about a way to get it into the Finder contextual menu;
it's not necessary and just an AppleScript wrapper will do).

However, for what you want, I think
my first outlined solution is better, and can also be applied to multiple file
selections.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: recording international podcasts

2011-07-31 Thread Esther
Hi William,

Let me suggest that one way to cope with existing podcasts is to control
playback speed. On the iPhone and iOS devices you can reduce speed to half for
playback. On your Mac, you can use VLC or Quicktime Player to play back at
variable speed (faster or slower). If you want to use iTunes, you can make an
AppleScript that will playback your selected track at a speed of your choosing.

I did a quick Mail Archive search on "from:Esther playback speed" and found
several old posts. Here's a link to the first one:
• Re: Audio playback with speed control
http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg01038.html
describes speed control capability in VLC and QuickTime
• Re: speeding up media
http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg34403.html
(note that the instructions to use the QuickTime player controls now require
using Command-Shift-R and NOT Command-R to show the file in Finder under the
most recent iTunes)
• Re: speeding up podcasts
http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg09819.html
This post includes sample AppleScripts for changing the playback speed and then
changing back to normal speed while keeping the bookmark position -- although
the example uses a speed up (e.g. 1.5 times or 1.33 times) you can make this a
slower time (e.g. 0.7 times).

HTH. Thank goodness I didn't have to use the Google Groups archive searching
to find these posts. The macvisionaries Mail Archive page is:

http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com

Just type your searches in the text box. For tips on search syntax check the
FAQ:
http://www.mail-archive.com/faq.html

Cheers,

Esther

Re: PDF to text converterS, anyone?

Hi Rafael,

Make sure in your AppleScript that everything is on one line for:

> do shell script "/usr/local/bin/pdftotext " & quoted form of POSIX path of
> chosenFile

The mailer sometimes wraps these lines. I think that if you select, copy, and
paste from my post you'll be OK. If you run into problems, let me know, and
I'll send you the script as an attachment.

Cheers,

Esther

reaper for the mac *accessibility issues*

2011-07-31 Thread Justin Thornton
hi
I have recently read on a form that reaper prerelease version 4 is pretty much
accessible with voiceover
in my playing around I don't get much feedback when I press certain keys e.g I
have configured a hot key f7
to arm a track
I would love to know if some one has developed a way or knows of a way I can
make reaper give me vocal feedback from either voiceover or the system voice
could I have some help with this
or could someone point me in the write direction for the person to ask
thanks in advance

Hopeing and Wishing Apple will Fix OS X Lion VoiceOver

2011-07-31 Thread Kevin Chao
Since OS X Lion was made available, I've seen lots of blind VoiceOver
users say things such as: "I hope Apple will fix this", "I wish Apple
will fix that", and "I know Apple will fix this".

Sorry to burst people's bubbles, but Apple are not mind readers, they
don't know all these issues discussed, and are not all magical. Apple
has lots of hardware, software, and lots of things that they are
always working on, new things, fixing bugs, and they are not all
focused on accessibility.

Why not help out Apple accessibility, who are very understanding,
commited, appreciate feedback, and will do their best to address the
feedback, as long as it was provided to begin with.

The best way to let Apple accessibility know of these issues is their
very easy to memorize and use E-mail address:
accessibil...@apple.com
or, there's the option to use AppleCare.

In either case, the more information that is provided, the better.

Please let Apple accessibility know the following:
Application (If not default, any custom preferences/settings):
Summary:
Steps to Reproduce
Expected:
Actual:
Regression (Is this bug or new to Lion, IE: were things working as
expected in OS X 10.6.8):
Notes:

Please, with your help, Apple accessibility has the opportunity to
make OS X Lion VoiceOver 4 a lot better. Now, please go out and
provide the great, detailed, and constructive feedback.

Hotspots

2011-07-31 Thread carlene knight
Hi:

I know that the hotspots were a bit unreliable in SL but now they don't work at
all in Lion, and the hotspot chooser shows them as inactive. I had two of them
set for ITunes that actually stuck, and I miss them. How do I enable them once
again, as I have no idea how they were disabled in the first place? Thanks.

Hi Rafael,

Make sure in your AppleScript that everything is on one line for:

The mailer sometimes wraps these lines. I think that if you select, copy, and
paste from my post you'll be OK. If you run into problems, let me know, and
I'll send you the script as an attachment.

Re: great wireless headset for computer

2011-07-31 Thread
This headset uses a USB adapter to find the headset, so as long as all these
devices has a USB port on them, it would be able to sink. It's plug and play,
nothing fancy.

possible bug in lion with voiceover

2011-07-31 Thread Mike Arrigo
Hey everyone, wondering if anyone else can reproduce this, or if it's just
happening on my system. I did a clean install of lion, when you first boot up,
your mouse pointer is on the apple menu in the menu bar. I needed to access an
application in the status menus that I can't get to with the keyboard, so I
turned on mouse keys and tried to get the mouse pointer there, however, when
pressing control option F5 to read what is under the mouse, voiceover does not
read the item. The command works fine if the mouse is in a window or on the
desktop, but when the mouse pointer is on anything in the menu bar, this
command does not read. If you press it again, it reads the position of the
pointer, but the first press of the command to read the item does not work.
Does anyone notice this?

I can confirm that this is happening for me too. First press of VO+F5 just

Hi. According to someone at the apple store, you can write one track to work

Re: speech loss

2011-07-31 Thread carlene knight
I've been losing speech often since upgrading to Lion. If I leave my computer
for an hour or two, I can pretty much guarantee that VO will not work. It
takes a while to get it toggled back on as well. Were you using your computer
when speech went away?

Re: Looking for a music creator program

2011-07-31 Thread Paul Henrichsen
Hi, Karen. She used to use a program called score writer and a version of
cakewalk to create Midi music with four or more tracks depending on the choir
piece she was working on.
Someone at the Apple store also suggested a program called finale as one
possibility.

Subject: Looking for a music creator program

Hi, All. On the PC, my sighted wife used to use a version of Cakewalk a few
years ago which allowed her to enter music one note at a time. I'm not a
music reader, but i guess she could enter the staffs and create the entire
choir song as if it were played on the piano.
She would use her mouse to do this.
She could then save the mp3 so I could listen to it and learn my part. She
could even drop the volume on the other parts so I could primarily hear the
 bass line.
Is there anything like that on the Mac?
I'd like to find something for as I know she enjoyed entering music.
Since she is sighted, accessibility isn't an issue.
 Thanks.

Re: Looking for an accessible DVD ripper

Hi, Doug. Will it work with commercial DVD's as far as making a backup copy?
Also, will it allow you to create an m4v file to put onto your iPad or iPhone?
Thanks.

Mail classic view

2011-07-31 Thread Shen
Hi,
Wondering if anyone has seen this. You probably have to have your Mail setup
the same as mine to see this behavior. I have my Mail set to classic view, and
group messages by conversation.
I generally put VoiceOver on the subject line since I don't really need to know
who is sending the emails.
OK, so I arrow to a conversation. I arrow left once to hear the sender. Now
let's say I arrow up or down away from that conversation, then decided to go
back. This time, a different name is in the from field.
I have not opened the conversation ahd have not read any messages in this
conversation. Yet, the second time when I see the sender, it is different from
the first time.
I can't pinpoint any particular pattern. But it seems to be happening randomly.
Has anyone seen this behavior?

Re: Mail classic view

2011-07-31 Thread Chris Moore
Yes I have seen this too, and it happens in standard view also. I think it has
something to do with Mail sorting the items into newest first, previously the
oldest message would appear first. I have reported this to Apple, I suggest you
do the same.
